Over Researched Places - Towards a Critical and Reflexive Approach (Hardcover): Cat Button, Gerald Taylor Aiken Over Researched Places - Towards a Critical and Reflexive Approach (Hardcover)
Cat Button, Gerald Taylor Aiken
R4,136 Discovery Miles 41 360 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The book explores the implications that research-density has on the people and places researched, on the researchers, on the data collected and knowledge produced, and on the theories that are developed. It examines the effects that research-density has on the people and places researched, on the researchers, on the data collected and knowledge produced, and on the theories that are developed. By weaving together experiences from a variety of countries and across disciplinary boundaries and research methods, the volume outlines the roots of over-research, where it comes from and what can be done about it. The book will be useful for social science students and researchers working in ethnographic disciplines such as Human Geography, Anthropology, Urban Planning, and Sociology and seeking to navigate the tricky 'absent present' of already existing research on their fields of exploration.

Woman Abuse in Rural Places (Paperback): Walter S DeKeseredy Woman Abuse in Rural Places (Paperback)
Walter S DeKeseredy
R1,287 Discovery Miles 12 870 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book chronicles key contemporary developments in the social scientific study of various types of male-to-female abuse in rural places and suggests new directions in research, theory, and policy. The main objective of this book is not to simply provide a dry recitation of the extant literature on the abuse of rural women in private places. To be sure, this material is covered, but rural women's experiences of crimes of the powerful like genocidal rape and corporate violence against female employees are also examined. Written by a celebrated expert on the subject, this book considers woman abuse in a broad context, covering forms of violence such as physical and sexual assault, coercive control genocidal rape, abortion bans, forced pregnancy, and corporate forms of violence. It offers a broad research agenda, that examines the multidimensional nature of violence against rural women. Drawing on decades of work in the shelter movement, with activist organizations, and doing government research, DeKeseredy punctuates the book with stories and voices of perpetrators and survivors of abuse. Additionally, what makes this book unique is that it focuses on the plight of rural women around the world and it introduces a modified version of Liz Kelly's original continuum of sexual violence. An accessible and compelling read, this book will appeal to students and scholars of criminology, sociology, women's studies, cultural studies, policing, geography and all those interested in learning about the abuse women face in rural areas. Walter S. DeKeseredy is Anna Deane Carlson Endowed Chair of Social Sciences, Director of the Research Center on Violence, and Professor of Sociology at West Virginia University. He has published 26 books, over 100 refereed journal articles, and 90 scholarly book chapters on issues such as woman abuse, rural criminology, and criminological theory.

Site Matters - Strategies for Uncertainty Through Planning and Design (Paperback, 2nd edition): Andrea Kahn, Carol J. Burns Site Matters - Strategies for Uncertainty Through Planning and Design (Paperback, 2nd edition)
Andrea Kahn, Carol J. Burns
R1,183 Discovery Miles 11 830 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

In the era of the Anthropocene, site matters are more pressing than ever. Building on the concepts, theories, and multi-disciplinary approaches raised in the first edition, this publication strives to address the changes that have taken place over the last 15 years with new material to complement and re-position the initial volume. Reaching across design disciplines, this highly illustrated anthology assembles essays from architects, landscape architects, urban designers, planners, historians, and artists to explore ways to physically and conceptually engage site. Thoughtful discourse and empirically grounded pieces combine to provide the language and theory to contextualize the meanings of site in the built environment. The increasingly complex hybridity of constructed environments today demands new tools for thinking about and working with site. Drawing contributions from outside and within the traditional design disciplines, this edition will trace important developments in site thinking with new essays on topics such as climate change, landscape as infrastructure, shifts from global to planetary urbanization debates, and the proliferation of participatory site transformation practices. Edited by two leading practitioners and academics, Site Matters juxtaposes timeless contributions from individuals including Elizabeth Meyer, Robert Beauregard, and Robin Dripps with original new writings from Peter Marcuse, Jane Wolff, Neil Brenner, and Thaisa Way, amongst others, to recontextualize and reignite the debate around site. An ideal text for students, academics, and researchers interested in site and design theory.

Monsters, Catastrophes and the Anthropocene - A Postcolonial Critique (Paperback): Gaia Giuliani Monsters, Catastrophes and the Anthropocene - A Postcolonial Critique (Paperback)
Gaia Giuliani
R1,268 Discovery Miles 12 680 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Monsters, Catastrophes and the Anthropocene: A Postcolonial Critique explores European and Western imaginaries of natural disaster, mass migration and terrorism through a postcolonial inquiry into modern conceptions of monstrosity and catastrophe. This book uses established icons of popular visual culture in sci-fi, doomsday and horror films and TV series, as well as in images reproduced by the news media to help trace the genealogy of modern fears to ontologies and logics of the Anthropocene. By logics of the Anthropocene, the book refers to a set of principles based on ontologies of exploitation, extermination and natural resource exhaustion processes determining who is worthy of benefiting from value extraction and being saved from the catastrophe and who is expendable. Fears for the loss of isolation from the unworthy and the expendable are investigated here as originating anxieties against migrants' invasions, terrorist attacks and planetary catastrophes, in a thread that weaves together re-emerging 'past nightmares' and future visions. This book will be of great interest to students and academics of the Environmental Humanities, Human and Cultural Geography, Political Philosophy, Psychosocial Studies, Postcolonial Studies and Critical Race and Whiteness Studies, Gender Studies and Postcolonial Feminist Studies, Cultural Studies, Sociology, Cultural Anthropology, Cinema Studies and Visual Studies.

Innovations in the Care of the Elderly (Hardcover): Bernard Isaacs, Helen Evers Innovations in the Care of the Elderly (Hardcover)
Bernard Isaacs, Helen Evers
R3,243 Discovery Miles 32 430 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1984 and concentrating on the West Midlands area of the UK, this book describes the innovations that were made and all that was involved in bringing about changes in care provision for elderly people. Place, Diversity and Solidarity (Paperback): Stijn Oosterlynck, Nick Schuermans, Maarten Loopmans Place, Diversity and Solidarity (Paperback)
Stijn Oosterlynck, Nick Schuermans, Maarten Loopmans
R1,326 R1,145 Discovery Miles 11 450 Save R181 (14%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

In many countries, particularly in the Global North, established forms of solidarity within communities are said to be challenged by the increasing ethnic and cultural diversity of the population. Against the backdrop of renewed geopolitical tensions - which inflate and exploit ethno-cultural, rather than political-economic cleavages - concerns are raised that ethnic and cultural diversity challenge both the formal mechanisms of redistribution and informal acts of charity, reciprocity and support which underpin common notions of community. This book focuses on the innovative forms of solidarity that develop around the joint appropriation and the envisaged common future of specific places. Drawing on examples from schools, streets, community centres, workplaces, churches, housing projects and sporting projects, it provides an alternative research agenda from the 'loss of community' narrative. It reflects on the different spatiotemporal frames in which solidarities are nurtured, the connections forged between solidarity and citizenship, and the role of interventions by professionals to nurture solidarity in diversity. This timely and original work will be essential reading for those working in human geography, sociology, ethnic studies, social work, urban studies, political studies and cultural studies.

Sacred Civics - Building Seven Generation Cities (Hardcover): Jayne Engle, Julian Agyeman, Tanya Chung-Tiam-Fook Sacred Civics - Building Seven Generation Cities (Hardcover)
Jayne Engle, Julian Agyeman, Tanya Chung-Tiam-Fook
R4,150 Discovery Miles 41 500 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Sacred Civics argues that societal transformation requires that spirituality and sacred values are essential to reimagining patterns of how we live, organize and govern ourselves, determine and distribute wealth, inhabit and design cities, and construct relationships with others and with nature. The book brings together transdisciplinary and global academics, professionals, and activists from a range of backgrounds to question assumptions that are fused deep into the code of how societies operate, and to draw on extraordinary wisdom from ancient Indigenous traditions; to social and political movements like Black Lives Matter, the commons, and wellbeing economies; to technologies for participatory futures where people collaborate to reimagine and change culture. Looking at cities and human settlements as the sites of transformation, the book focuses on values, commons, and wisdom to demonstrate that how we choose to live together, to recognize interdependencies, to build, grow, create, and love-matters. Using multiple methodologies to integrate varied knowledge forms and practices, this truly ground-breaking volume includes contributions from renowned and rising voices. Sacred Civics is a must-read for anyone interested in intersectional discussions on social justice, inclusivity, participatory design, healthy communities, and future cities. Recalibrating the Quantitative Revolution in Geography - Travels, Networks, Translations (Hardcover): Ferenc Gyuris, Boris... Recalibrating the Quantitative Revolution in Geography - Travels, Networks, Translations (Hardcover)
Ferenc Gyuris, Boris Michel, Katharina Paulus
R4,146 Discovery Miles 41 460 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book brings together international research on the quantitative revolution in geography. It offers perspectives from a wide range of contexts and national traditions that decenter the Anglo-centric discussions. The mid-20th-century quantitative revolution is frequently regarded as a decisive moment in the history of geography, transforming it into a modern and applied spatial science. This book highlights the different temporalities and spatialities of local geographies laying the ground for a global history of a specific mode of geographical thought. It contributes to the contemporary discussions around the geographies and mobilities of knowledge, notions of worlding, linguistic privilege, decolonizing and internationalizing of geographic knowledge. This book will be of interest to researchers, postgraduates and advance students in geography and those interested in the spatial sciences.

Planning and the Multi-local Urban Experience - The Power of Lifescapes (Hardcover): Kimmo Lapintie Planning and the Multi-local Urban Experience - The Power of Lifescapes (Hardcover)
Kimmo Lapintie
R4,127 Discovery Miles 41 270 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The starting point of this book is the observation that there is a discrepancy between the lived reality of human beings and the fabricated, planned, and governed 'reality' of the state apparatus at both the local and national level. The book posits multi-locality as an emerging spatial configuration. The author draws from various theoretical sources, such as Deleuze and Guattari's concepts of state or royal science, the Nietzschean critique of idealism, Hagerstrnad's time-geography, Hintikka's theory of modalities, Lefebvre's urban society, Castel's network society, Foucault's concept of heterotopia, and Bhaskar's and Sartre's theories of presence and absence. He also discusses the implications of Faludi's post-territorialist critique of planning and governance, and of the failure to operationalise the concept quantitively, basing his arguments in the lived experiences of multi-locals as well. The novelty of the book is how it analyses multi-locality from such a wide theoretical perspective: what is the nature and meaning of the different multiple and coexistent places for people, and how is this spatial transformation related to their mobility, everyday practices, and work. How does the presence and absence of places form their identity and their citizenship? He also addresses the inconsistency between multi-locality and traditional statistics and the planning and governance practices based on the assumption of unilocality and discusses the implications of this incongruity. The book will be of interest to scholars in urban studies and planning theory, as well as practitioners developing more adequate practices replacing outdated ones.

Care of the Elderly Mentally Infirm (Hardcover): Barbara Gray, Bernard Isaacs Care of the Elderly Mentally Infirm (Hardcover)
Barbara Gray, Bernard Isaacs
R3,247 Discovery Miles 32 470 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1979, this book explains why so many people suffer behavioural changes in later life; how this affects those around them; the services that exist to assist older people and those who work with them and how such services can be profitably used. A recurring theme is the interaction of the different varieties of mental illness with one another and with physical, emotional, social and personality factors. The book provides detailed guidance for social workers caring for the elderly on such topics as how an assessment of a mentally disturbed older person can be made; procedure for removal from home under a court order and compulsory admission to hospital; ways of communicating with elderly people and gauging the needs of relatives and carers.

Class and Health - Research and Longitudinal Data (Hardcover): Richard G. Wilkinson Class and Health - Research and Longitudinal Data (Hardcover)
Richard G. Wilkinson
R3,248 Discovery Miles 32 480 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1986, this book discusses issues such as social class differences in health; the effect of unemployment on health; the relationship between income and health; how much of the class differences in death rates can be explained in terms of medically recognized factors. Presenting empirical research to resolve these issues, the book takes health to the centre of the political stage and raises fundamental issues about the direction of modern economic and social development and its impact on inequality. As relevant now as when it was first published the book reviews twenty of the most important longitudinal studies in the area of health and class that had been carried out in the UK at the time.

Understanding Human Ecology - A Systems Approach to Sustainability (Hardcover, 2nd edition): Robert Dyball, Barry Newell Understanding Human Ecology - A Systems Approach to Sustainability (Hardcover, 2nd edition)
Robert Dyball, Barry Newell
R4,134 Discovery Miles 41 340 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Understanding Human Ecology offers a coherent conceptual framework for human ecology - a clear approach for understanding the many systems we are part of and for how we frame and understand the problems we face. Blending natural, social, and cognitive sciences with dynamical systems theory, this key text offers offer systems approaches that are accessible to all, from the undergraduate student to policymakers and practitioners across government, business, and community. In the first edition, road-tested and refined over a decade of teaching and workshops, the authors built a clear, inspiring and important framework for anyone approaching the management of complex problems and the transition to sustainability. Fully updated for the second edition, the book now goes further in using systems-thinking principles to explain fundamental processes of change in social-ecological systems. Climate Change Governance in Asia (Paperback): Kuei-Tien Chou, Koichi Hasegawa, Dowan Ku, Shu-Fen Kao Climate Change Governance in Asia (Paperback)
Kuei-Tien Chou, Koichi Hasegawa, Dowan Ku, Shu-Fen Kao
R1,302 Discovery Miles 13 020 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Asian countries are among the largest contributors to climate change. China, India, Japan and South Korea are among the top ten largest carbon emitters in the world, with South Korea, Japan and Taiwan also some of the largest on a per capita basis. At the same time, many Asian countries, notably India, Taiwan, Japan, the Philippines and Thailand are among those most affected by climate change, in terms of economic losses attributed to climate-related disasters. Asia is an extremely diverse region, in terms of the political regimes of its constituent countries, and of their level of development and the nature of their civil societies. As such, its countries are producing a wide range of governance approaches to climate change. Covering the diversity of climate change governance in Asia, this book presents cosmopolitan governance from the perspective of urban and rural communities, local and central governments, state-society relations and international relations. In doing so it offers both a valuable overview of individual Asian countries' approaches to climate change governance, and a series of case studies for finding solutions to climate change challenges.

Studies on the Social Construction of Identity and Authenticity (Paperback): J. Patrick Williams, Kaylan C. Schwarz Studies on the Social Construction of Identity and Authenticity (Paperback)
J. Patrick Williams, Kaylan C. Schwarz
R1,279 Discovery Miles 12 790 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

As identity and authenticity discourses increasingly saturate everyday life, so too have these concepts spread across the humanities and social sciences literatures. Many scholars may be interested in identity and authenticity but lack knowledge of paradigmatic or disciplinary approaches to these concepts. This volume offers readers insight into social constructionist approaches to identity and authenticity. It focuses on the processes of identification and authentication, rather than on subjective experiences of selfhood. There are no attempts to settle what authentic identities are. On the contrary, contributors demonstrate that neither identities nor their authenticity have a single or fixed meaning. Chapters provide exemplars of contemporary research on identity and authenticity, with significant diversity among them in terms of the identities, cultural milieu, geographic settings, disciplinary traditions, and methodological approaches considered. Contributors introduce readers to a number of established and emerging identity groups from sites around the world, from yogis and punks to fire dancers and social media influencers. Their conceptual work stretches from the micro-analytic to the ethno-national as authors employ a variety of qualitative methods including ethnographic fieldwork, interviewing, and the collection and analysis of naturally-occurring interactions. Several of the chapters look directly at identification and authentication while others focus on the social and cultural backdrops that structure these practices - what unites them is the adoption of social constructionist sensibilities. This book will appeal to anyone interested in understanding identity and authenticity.

Peace and Rural Development in Colombia - The Window for Distributive Change in Negotiated Transitions (Paperback): Andres... Peace and Rural Development in Colombia - The Window for Distributive Change in Negotiated Transitions (Paperback)
Andres Garcia Trujillo
R1,290 Discovery Miles 12 900 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In Peace and Rural Development in Colombia Andres Garcia Trujillo investigates whether peace agreements geared toward terminating internal armed conflicts trigger rural distributive changes. Combining academic rigor with an insider's perspective, Garcia Trujillo shows that the peace agreement in Colombia opened an exceptional window for addressing rural inequality. Yet, despite some progress, he argues that the agreement's leverage to stir change was severely constrained by opposing actors within and outside the government. Garcia Trujillo later applies the framework developed for the Colombian case to explain key dynamics of other post-conflict societies that have dealt with agrarian issues under a transitional context, like El Salvador or South Africa. The original theoretical framework and empirically rich analysis make Peace and Rural Development in Colombia an indispensable read for scholars and practitioners who wish to gain an understanding on the political economy of peacemaking, policy change, and rural development in Colombia and beyond.

Rural-Urban Linkages for Sustainable Development (Paperback): Armin Kratzer, Jutta Kister Rural-Urban Linkages for Sustainable Development (Paperback)
Armin Kratzer, Jutta Kister
R1,296 Discovery Miles 12 960 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book critically examines different forms of urban-rural links for sustainable development in different countries. As intertwined processes of globalization, digitalization, environmental challenges and the search for sustainable development continue, rural and urban areas around the world become increasingly interconnected and interdependent. This book contributes to understanding the role of this growing interconnectedness from an economic geographical perspective. It does so by theoretically and empirically addressing the various existing linkages, such as food networks, value chains, and regional governance at local, regional, national and international levels. In doing so, contributions extend and contrast existing approaches dealing with urban and rural areas separately by considering the interplay between these two as well as their consequences for sustainability transition pathways. This edited volume adds to the academic and policy debate by bringing together a variety of concepts and themes in order to shift the research and policy agenda away from simple dichotomy to different notions of rural-urban linkages. Offering multidisciplinary insights into rural-urban linkages, the book will be of interest to decision-makers, practitioners and researchers in the fields of economic geography, regional planning, food studies and economics.

Crisis and Emergency Management in the Arctic - Navigating Complex Environments (Paperback): Natalia Andreassen, Odd Jarl Borch Crisis and Emergency Management in the Arctic - Navigating Complex Environments (Paperback)
Natalia Andreassen, Odd Jarl Borch
R1,294 Discovery Miles 12 940 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book sheds light on the management challenges of crisis and emergency response in an arctic environment. It explores how the complexity of the operational environment impacts on the risk of operations and addresses a need for tailor-made emergency response mechanisms. Through case studies of the arctic environment, the book illustrates how factors such as nature, geography, demographics and infrastructure increase the complexity of crises in the Arctic and present a significant danger to life and health, the environment and values in challenging Arctic waters. The case studies lay a special focus on contextual factors including conflicting interests and different stakeholder groups, as well as the institutional platforms influencing crisis response and emergency management. They also explore the implications for the managerial roles, the mode of operations, and the structuring of the organizations responsible for the emergency response. The necessity to facilitate cooperation across organizations and borders and a need for organizational flexibility in large scale operations are also emphasized. Written in an accessible style, this book will make for a useful resource for undergraduate and postgraduate students of disaster and emergency management, as well as for professionals involved in emergency services.

Affective Architectures - More-Than-Representational Geographies of Heritage (Paperback): Jacque Micieli-Voutsinas, Angela M.... Affective Architectures - More-Than-Representational Geographies of Heritage (Paperback)
Jacque Micieli-Voutsinas, Angela M. Person
R1,302 Discovery Miles 13 020 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

How do places manipulate our emotions? How are spaces affectious in their articulation and design? This book provides theoretical frameworks for exploring affective dimensions of architectural sites based on the notion that heritage, as an embodied experience, is embedded in places and spaces. Drawing together an interdisciplinary collection of essays spanning geographically diverse architectural sites - including Ford's Theater, the site of President Lincoln's assassination; the Estadio Nacional of Santiago, Chile, where 12,000 detainees were held following the ouster of President Salvador Allende; and Unit 731, the site of a biological and chemical warfare research unit of the Imperial Japanese army in Harbin, China, amongst others - this edited collection assembles critical dialogue amongst scholars and practitioners engaging in affective and other more-than-representational approaches to cultural memory, heritage, and identity-making. Broken into three main sections: Affective Politics; Embedded Geographies; and Affective Methodologies, this book draws together multidisciplinary perspectives from the arts, social sciences and humanities to understand the role of architecture in generating embodied experiences at places of memory. This book offers interdisciplinary perspectives on fundamental questions of memory, identity and space. It will be of interest to students and scholars in the fields of geography, architecture, cultural studies, and museum and heritage studies.

Mobility and Displacement - Nomadism, Identity and Postcolonial Narratives in Mongolia (Paperback): Orhon Myadar Mobility and Displacement - Nomadism, Identity and Postcolonial Narratives in Mongolia (Paperback)
Orhon Myadar
R1,277 Discovery Miles 12 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book explores and contests both outsiders' projections of Mongolia and the self-objectifying tropes Mongolians routinely deploy to represent their own country as a land of nomads. It speaks to the experiences of many societies and cultures that are routinely treated as exotic, romantic, primitive or otherwise different and Other in Euro-American imaginaries, and how these imaginaries are also internally produced by those societies themselves. The assumption that Mongolia is a nomadic nation is largely predicated upon Mongolia's environmental and climatic conditions, which are understood to make Mongolia suitable for little else than pastoral nomadism. But to the contrary, the majority of Mongolians have been settled in and around cities and small population centers. Even Mongolians who are herders have long been unable to move freely in a smooth space, as dictated by the needs of their herds, and as they would as free-roaming "nomads." Instead, they have been subjected to various constraints across time that have significantly limited their movement. The book weaves threads from disparate branches of Mongolian studies to expose various visible and invisible constraints on population mobility in Mongolia from the Qing period to the post-socialist era. With its in-depth analysis of the complexities of the relationship between land rights, mobility, displacement, and the state, the book makes a valuable contribution to the fields of cultural geography, political geography, heritage and culture studies, as well as Eurasian and Inner-Asian Studies. Winner of the Julian Minghi Distinguished Book Award (AAG, 2022)
