Zionism and Free Enterprise - The Story of Private Entrepreneurs in Citrus Plantations in Palestine in the 1920s and 1930s... Zionism and Free Enterprise - The Story of Private Entrepreneurs in Citrus Plantations in Palestine in the 1920s and 1930s (Hardcover)
Irit Amit-Cohen
R3,451 Discovery Miles 34 510 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Irit Amit-Cohen explores the riddle behind disappearing citrus orchards and plantations from Israel's coastal scenery. The book reveals the biographies of entrepreneurs who came to Palestine in the 1920s and 1930s. Exposing the uniqueness of the plantation companies, describing the figures involved in them and analyzing their contribution to forming Palestine's settlement landscape in the British Mandate period, this book relates the intimate narrative of settlements which were built as temporary structures, but still leave lasting imprints on the landscape.

Nature, Temporality and Environmental Management - Scandinavian and Australian perspectives on peoples and landscapes... Nature, Temporality and Environmental Management - Scandinavian and Australian perspectives on peoples and landscapes (Paperback)
Lesley Head, Katarina Saltzman, Gunhild Setten, Marie Stenseke
R1,358 Discovery Miles 13 580 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

How are different concepts of nature and time embedded into human practices of landscape and environmental management? And how can temporalities that entwine past, present and future help us deal with challenges on the ground? In a time of uncertainty and climate change, how much can we hold onto ideals of nature rooted in a pristine and stable past? The Scandinavian and Australian perspectives in this book throw fresh light on these questions and explore new possibilities and challenges in uncertain and changing landscapes of the future. This book presents examples from farmers, gardens and Indigenous communities, among others, and shows that many people and communities are already actively engaging with environmental change and uncertainty. The book is structured around four themes; environmental futures, mobile natures, indigenous and colonial legacies, heritage and management. Part I includes important contributions towards contemporary environmental management debates, yet the chapters in this section also show how the legacy of older landscapes forms part of the active production of future ones. Part II examines the challenges of living with mobile natures, as it is acknowledged that environments, natures and people do not stand still. An important dimension of the heritage and contemporary politics of Australia, Sweden and Norway is the presence of indigenous peoples. As is clear in part III, the legacies of the colonial past both haunt and energise contemporary land management decisions. Finally, part IV demonstrates how the history and heritage of landscapes, including human activities in those landscapes, are entwined with contemporary environmental management. The rich empirical content of the chapters exposes the diversity of meanings, practices, and ways of being in nature that can be derived from cultural environmental research in different disciplines. The everyday engagements between people, nature and temporalities provide important creative resources with which to meet future challenges.

The New Despotism - The Revival of an Old Monster (Hardcover): Bulent Diken The New Despotism - The Revival of an Old Monster (Hardcover)
Bulent Diken
R2,691 Discovery Miles 26 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Ours is a post-political society that cannot imagine radical change; a 'one dimensional' society in which politics is reduced to economic concerns. Paradoxically, however, everybody today is subjected to the imperative of regular radical change. Populations have grown accustomed to the idea that one constantly needs to adapt to radical transformations, modify one's life strategy in tune with the demands of the market on the one hand and the politics of security on the other. Indeed, the idea that there are unquestionable authorities, the idea of 'despotism', no longer refers to exceptional circumstances in which politics is suspended but rather seems to have become normalized as part of daily life. This book aims to articulate the genealogy of the despotism-economy-voluntary servitude nexus focusing on their different constellations in the prism of social theory and political philosophy. As it traces the genealogy of this nexus its concern is the field of formation, intervention and intelligibility that arises when and as the three concepts encounter one another.

Place Attachment - Advances in Theory, Methods and Applications (Paperback, 2nd edition): Lynne Manzo, Patrick Devine-Wright Place Attachment - Advances in Theory, Methods and Applications (Paperback, 2nd edition)
Lynne Manzo, Patrick Devine-Wright
R1,475 Discovery Miles 14 750 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Following on from the ground-breaking first edition, which received the 2014 EDRA Achievement Award, this fully updated text includes new chapters on current issues in the built environment, such as GIS and mapping, climate change, and qualitative approaches. Place attachments are powerful emotional bonds that form between people and their physical surroundings. They inform our sense of identity, create meaning in our lives, facilitate community, and influence action. Place attachments have bearing on such diverse issues as rootedness and belonging, placemaking and displacement, mobility and migration, intergroup conflict, civic engagement, social housing and urban redevelopment, natural resource management, and global climate change. In this multidisciplinary book, Manzo and Devine-Wright draw together the latest thinking by leading scholars from around the globe, including contributions from scholars such as Daniel Williams, Mindy Fullilove, Randy Hester, and David Seamon, to capture significant advancements in three main areas: theory, methods, and applications. Over the course of fifteen chapters, using a wide range of conceptual and applied methods, the authors critically review and challenge contemporary knowledge, identify significant advances, and point to areas for future research. This important volume offers the most current understandings about place attachment, a critical concept for the environmental social sciences and placemaking professions.

Representing Place and Territorial Identities in Europe - Discourses, Images, and Practices (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Tiziana... Representing Place and Territorial Identities in Europe - Discourses, Images, and Practices (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Tiziana Banini, Oana-Ramona Ilovan; Foreword by Anssi Paasi
R3,130 Discovery Miles 31 300 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book provides insight into the topic of place and territorial identity, which involves both the dimension of collective belonging and the politics of territorial planning and enhancement. It considers the social, economic and political effects of territorial identity representations among others in terms of mystification, spatial fetishism, and the creation of place and territorial stereotypes. A mixed methodology is employed to research case studies at diverse territorial scales which are relevant to the impact of a variety of factors on place/territorial identity processes such as migration, political and economic changes, natural disasters, land use changes, etc. Visual imagery, constructing visual discourses and living within visual cultures are placed in the foreground and refer to among others the changes and challenges introduced by the Internet and social networks in place/territory representations and self-representations; identity politics and its impact on place/territorial identity representations; discourses in shaping representations and self-representations of territorial/place-based identities related to collective memory, cultural heritage, invented tradition, imagined communities and other key notions.

Neil Carrier, Tabea Scharrer
R843 Discovery Miles 8 430 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The increased presence of Somalis has brought much change to East African towns and cities in recent decades, change that has met with ambivalence and suspicion, especially within Kenya. This volume demystifies Somali residence and mobility in urban East Africa, showing its historical depth, and exploring the social, cultural and political underpinnings of Somali-led urban transformation. In so doing, it offers a vivid case study of the transformative power of (forced) migration on urban centres, and the intertwining of urbanity and mobility. The volume will be of interest for readers working in the broader field of migration, as well as anthropology and urban studies.

Contemporary Environmental Problems in Nepal - Geographic Perspectives (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Keshav Bhattarai, Dennis... Contemporary Environmental Problems in Nepal - Geographic Perspectives (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Keshav Bhattarai, Dennis Conway
R4,400 Discovery Miles 44 000 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This monograph examines contemporary environmental challenges facing Nepal, this landlocked country's representativeness in the wider South Asian context is both distinct and generalizable. In large part, this is because of its extremes of physiographical structure- plains, hill ranges, mountainous massifs - and wide range of altitudinal terrains, which represent and replicate South Asian and East Asian continental conditions differing as markedly as humid tropical lowlands, sub-tropical hill ranges and temperate to sub-arctic mountainous environments. Associated forest regimes, in which deforestation and reforestation patterns have evolved in recent times, and differing densities of settlement and cleared agricultural landscapes in each of these altitudinal zones, add to the environmental diversity of Nepal. Associated fauna and exotic species are in various states of endangerment especially Bengal tigers, one horned rhinos, wild elephants, crocodile, musk deer, and peasants, to name a few- so that their forested and mountainous habitats as 'Wild Life Reserves' also deserve our attention, and are featured in this monograph's remit.

African Heritage Challenges - Communities and Sustainable Development (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Britt Baillie, Marie Louise... African Heritage Challenges - Communities and Sustainable Development (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Britt Baillie, Marie Louise Stig Sorensen
R3,364 Discovery Miles 33 640 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The richness of Africa's heritage at times stands in stark contrast to the economic, health, political and societal challenges faced. Development is essential but in what forms? For whom? Following whose agendas? At what costs? This book explores how heritage can promote, secure, or undermine sustainable development with special focus on sub-Saharan Africa, and in turn, how this affects conceptions of heritage. The chapters in this volume identify shared challenges, good practices and failures, and use specific case studies to provide detailed insights into varied forms of heritage and heritage defining processes on the continent. By critically analysing the often romanticised discourses of 'heritage', 'community engagement', and 'sustainable development' the volume suggests ways of harnessing aspects of heritage to tackle some of the socio-economic and political pressures facing heritage practices on the continent, including the legacies of colonialism.

Tourism and Coastal Development in Japan (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Lesley Crowe-Delaney Tourism and Coastal Development in Japan (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Lesley Crowe-Delaney
R2,458 Discovery Miles 24 580 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book explores contemporary tourism and coastal developments in Hyogo, Japan-the nation's only non-peninsular prefecture bordering two oceans. In striking detail, Dr. Lesley Crowe-Delaney skillfully contextualizes tourism industry and policy; illustrates coastal urban and rural development dichotomies; discusses hegemonic devices of nationalism, nature, authenticity and tradition, as embedded in tourism strategies; and highlights the nuances of Japan's distinctive administrative systems and specific approaches to tourism. Crowe-Delaney reveals the strains placed on coastal communities when fisheries, tourism, sustainable development, and national policies intersect, offering readers an enlightening discourse of the potency of tourism as a rejuvenation tool.

Transit-Oriented Development - Learning from International Case Studies (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Ren Thomas, Luca Bertolini Transit-Oriented Development - Learning from International Case Studies (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Ren Thomas, Luca Bertolini
R1,634 Discovery Miles 16 340 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book uses international case studies to present insights on the policies, actors, and institutions that are critical to successful transit-oriented development (TOD). TOD has many potential benefits for cities and regions, and is considered a critical element in reshaping sprawling car-dependent urban regions into denser regions built around transit corridors. However, it is not a magic bullet solution for metropolitan transportation problems: challenges persist, such as displacement of local residents and regulatory barriers. How has TOD been successfully implemented? How can we integrate the positive aspects of TOD while minimizing its negative impacts? This book presents a study conducted at the University of Amsterdam, exploring 11 international case studies, including a meta-analysis, rough set analysis and policy transfer workshops. The authors discuss the findings and present solutions to persistent challenges to transit-oriented development. Additional literature on eTOD (equitable TOD) strategies, as a fundamental component of planning for regional transportation, shows that these approaches can result in more collaborative processes, community-led development that minimizes the negative impacts of transportation infrastructure. As our Dutch colleagues stated, TOD can be considered a policy concept that can be used as a story to unite people.

Understanding Energy Innovation - Learning from Smart Grid Experiments (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Heather Lovell Understanding Energy Innovation - Learning from Smart Grid Experiments (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Heather Lovell
R1,494 Discovery Miles 14 940 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This open access book uses smart grids to explore and better understand energy innovation, from a social science perspective. Understanding Energy Innovation has four core themes-networks, nodes, narratives and nostalgia-and each chapter tackles a theme, using case studies from Australia and Europe. Energy innovation is currently occurring at a rapid pace, in response to a host of problems including climate change, high energy prices, and unreliable supply. Understanding Energy Innovation provides ways to think about and plan for energy sector reform and innovation, drawing on core ideas from social and innovation theory, and centred on smart grids as a case study. These academic ideas are written about in an accessible way, recognising that a diversity of people have an interest in energy innovation generally, and smart grids more specifically, and would like to find out more about ways of understanding energy innovation that integrate the social and the political.

In the Shadow of Enoch Powell - Race, Locality and Resistance (Paperback): Shirin Hirsch In the Shadow of Enoch Powell - Race, Locality and Resistance (Paperback)
Shirin Hirsch
R579 Discovery Miles 5 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Fifty years ago Enoch Powell made national headlines with his 'Rivers of Blood' speech, warning of an immigrant invasion in the once respectable streets of Wolverhampton. This local fixation brought the Black Country town into the national spotlight, yet Powell's unstable relationship with Wolverhampton has since been overlooked. Drawing from interviews and archival material, this book offers a rich local history through which to investigate the speech, bringing to life the racialised dynamics of space during a critical moment in British history. What was going on beneath the surface in Wolverhampton and how did Powell's constituents respond to this dramatic moment? The research traces the ways in which Powell's words reinvented the town and uncovers highly contested local responses. While Powell left Wolverhampton in 1974, the book returns to the city to explore the collective memories of the speech which continue to reverberate. In a contemporary period of new crisis and national divisions, revisiting the shadow of Powell allows us to reflect on racism and resistance from 1968 to today. -- .

On the Job - An Encyclopedia of Unique Occupations around the World (Hardcover): Margo DeMello On the Job - An Encyclopedia of Unique Occupations around the World (Hardcover)
Margo DeMello
R2,854 Discovery Miles 28 540 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This one-volume encyclopedia examines jobs and occupations from around the world that are unique and out of the ordinary, from bike fishermen in the Netherlands and professional wedding guests in South Korea to elephant dressers in India. It's not surprising that the first question we are asked by strangers often has to do with what we do for a living. It's another way of asking, "Who are you, and what are you about?" But what happens when the answer to that question is "I am a gondolier" or "I am an Instagram influencer?" This book tries to answer that question, focusing on approximately 100 unusual occupations around the world. Arranged alphabetically, entries define the jobs and detail their historical, social, and cultural significance. Entries also examine where the job is located, how it came to be, how people get into the position, and what the economic and future outlook is for that job. While the entries focus on contemporary jobs, the encyclopedia also includes sidebars that highlight unique jobs from history to give the reader a sense of how unusual (and often terrible!) some jobs once were. Students will find this book useful in looking at cultures around the world. Helps readers to better understand cultural values of other countries and make cross-cultural comparisons Helps readers to identify similar and related jobs across cultures with listings of jobs by category Illuminates the text through sidebars highlighting interesting facts and anecdotal observations Illustrates hard-to-imagine jobs through photos Is written in an engaging, accessible tone for high school students, but is also useful for undergraduates and general readers

Bioregional Planning and Design: Volume I - Perspectives on a Transitional Century (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): David Fanfani,... Bioregional Planning and Design: Volume I - Perspectives on a Transitional Century (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
David Fanfani, Alberto Mataran Ruiz
R4,244 Discovery Miles 42 440 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book provides a review of the bioregionalist theory in the field of spatial planning and design as a suitable approach to cope with the growing concerns about the negative effects of metropolization processes and the need for a sustainable transition. The book starts out with a section on rethinking places for community life, and discusses the reframing of regional governance and development as well as social justice in spatial planning. It introduces the concept of the urban bioregion, a pivotal concept that underpins balanced polycentric spatial patterns and supports self-reliant and fair local development. The second part of the book focuses on planning, and particularly on the issues that arise from the 'circular' recovery of the relation between city and agro-ecosystems for integrated planning and resilience of settlements and discusses topics such as foodshed planning, biophilic urbanism and the integration of rural development and spatial planning. This volume sets out the reference framework for Volume II which deals with more specific and operational issues related to spatial policies and settlement design.

Atmospheres and the Experiential World - Theory and Methods (Paperback): Shanti Sumartojo, Sarah Pink Atmospheres and the Experiential World - Theory and Methods (Paperback)
Shanti Sumartojo, Sarah Pink
R1,342 Discovery Miles 13 420 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

We live in atmospheres, we talk about them and we move through them. They offer us an important route into comprehending several aspects of human life and experience, what is important to people, the environments life is played out in, and the processes of change and possible futures. Atmospheres are an ephemeral yet inescapable element of our everyday experiential and conceptual environments. They are continually beyond our grasp as they undergo constant transformation. By interrogating atmospheres, this book arrives at new ways of thinking about the relationships between people, space, time and events. Atmospheres and the Experiential World explores the ways we engage with these affective modes, and the possibilities they offer for researchers, designers and policy-makers to make and intervene in the world. Chapters propose an approach to atmospheres that is not fixed to certain forms or boundaries. Instead, this book argues that atmospheres should be conceptualised as dynamic and changing configurations that allow analytical insight into a range of topics when we think in, about and through them. This book offers scholars, designers and creative practitioners, professionals and students a research-based way of understanding and intervening in atmospheres.

Living with Buildings - And Walking with Ghosts - On Health and Architecture (Paperback): Iain Sinclair Living with Buildings - And Walking with Ghosts - On Health and Architecture (Paperback)
Iain Sinclair 1
R303 Discovery Miles 3 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

'A remarkable book; surprisingly gripping and often very moving ... at once disorientating and illuminating.' - Robert Macfarlane

We shape ourselves, and are shaped in return, by the walls that contain us. Buildings affect how we sleep, work, socialise and even breathe. They can isolate and endanger us but they can also heal us. We project our hopes and fears onto buildings, while they absorb our histories.

In Living With Buildings, Iain Sinclair embarks on a series of expeditions - through London, Marseille, Mexico and the Outer Hebrides. A father and his daughter, who has a rare syndrome, visit the estate where they once lived. Developers clink champagne glasses as residents are 'decanted' from their homes. A box sculpted from whalebone, thought to contain healing properties, is returned to its origins with unexpected consequences. Part investigation, part travelogue, Living With Buildings brings the spaces we inhabit to life as never before.

Contemporary Applications of Actor Network Theory (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Idongesit Williams Contemporary Applications of Actor Network Theory (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Idongesit Williams
R3,348 Discovery Miles 33 480 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book provides empirically driven discussions and investigations in the relevance of Actor Network Theory (ANT) and its theoretical concepts. As our civilization evolves from a human to a technologically driven society, new socio-technical network of actors - in society, industry and government are emerging by the day. These networks of actors collaborate to produce contemporary goods and services; handle production processes; manage risks; develop social and commercial networks; develop policies; manage complexities; and create a new way of life. This book provides unique conceptual tools needed to analyze such processes, highlighting the effectiveness of ANT in fostering collaborations between governments, organizations and society.

Societies under Construction - Geographies, Sociologies and Histories of Building (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Daniel J. Sage,... Societies under Construction - Geographies, Sociologies and Histories of Building (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Daniel J. Sage, Chloe Vitry
R3,341 Discovery Miles 33 410 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This edited collection explores building construction as an inspiring, yet often overlooked, place to develop new knowledge about the development of human societies. Eschewing dominant engineering and management perspectives on construction, the book is purposefully broad in its scope, both empirically and theoretically, as reflecting the rich underexplored potential of studies of building construction to inform a wide span of intellectual debates across the social science and humanities. The seven chapters encompass contributions to theories of: spatiotemporal organization with wildlife on building sites; institutional change with building ruins; home with Mexican self-help housing; place with a suburban housing development; socio-materiality with the adaptation of a university library; migrant labour with the Parisian postwar construction boom; and gender with a female site manager in Sweden. This book seeks to develop a new critical sub-area for construction studies that focuses on the actual processes and practices of 'constructing'. Bringing together diverse members of construction research communities working in a variety of contexts, it develops empirical engagements with building work to challenge its marginalization, relative to architectural studies, to provoke novel understandings of human history, geography and sociology.
