In this straightforward, easy-to-understand and entertaining book, dietitian and environmentalist Dr. Dana Ellis Hunnes outlines the actions we can all take. Many people feel overwhelmed by the scope of climate change and believe that only large, sweeping changes will make any difference. Yet the choices we make every day can have effects on climate change, the oceans, the land, and other species. This book outlines the problems we are facing, and then presents ideas or 'recipes' to empower us, to help us all make a difference. Recipe For Survival provides the guidance that you can use right now to improve your health, your family's health, and the health of the environment simultaneously.

Interconnections Between Human and Ecosystem Health (Hardcover, 1996 ed.): R.T. Digiulio, E. Monosson Interconnections Between Human and Ecosystem Health (Hardcover, 1996 ed.)
R.T. Digiulio, E. Monosson
R4,166 Discovery Miles 41 660 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Ecotoxicology is a relatively new scientific discipline. Indeed, it might be argued that it is only during the last 5-10 years that it has come to merit being regarded as a true science, rather than a collection of procedures for protecting the environment through management and monitoring of pollutant discharges into the environment. The term 'ecotoxicology' was first coined in the late sixties by Prof. Truhaut, a toxicologist who had the vision to recognize the importance of investigating the fate and effects of chemicals in ecosystems. At that time, ecotoxicology was considered a sub-discipline of medical toxicology. Subsequently, several attempts have been made to portray ecotoxicology in a more realistic light. Notably, both Moriarty (1988) and F. Ramade (1987) emphasized in their books the broad basis of ecotoxicology, encompassing chemical and radiation effects on all components of ecosystems. In doing so, they and others have shifted concern from direct chemical toxicity to humans, to the far more subtle effects that pollutant chemicals exert on natural biota. Such effects potentially threaten the existence of all life on earth. Although I have identified the sixties as the era when ecotoxicology was first conceived as a coherent subject area, it is important to acknowledge that studies that would now be regarded as ecotoxicological are much older.

Climate Change and Cultural Heritage - A Race against Time (Paperback): Peter F Smith Climate Change and Cultural Heritage - A Race against Time (Paperback)
Peter F Smith
R1,497 Discovery Miles 14 970 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

History reveals how civilisations can be decimated by changes in climate. More recently modern methods of warfare have exposed the vulnerability of the artefacts of civilisation. Bringing together a range of subjects - from science, energy and sustainability to aesthetics theory and civilization theory - this book uniquely deals with climate change and the ensuing catastrophes in relation to cultural factors, urbanism and architecture. It links the evolution of civilisation, with special emphasis on the dynamics of beauty as displayed in architecture and urbanism, to climate change. It then considers both the historic and predicted impacts of climate change and the threat it poses to the continued viability of human civilisation when survival is the top priority. This book gives students, researchers and professionals in architecture and sustainable design as well as anyone interested in the threat of global warming to civilisation, new insights as to what could be lost if action is not taken at a global level.

Wetlands for Water Pollution Control, Second Edition, covers the fundamental science and engineering principles relevant to the drainage and treatment of both storm and wastewater. Standard and novel design recommendations for predominantly constructed wetlands and related sustainable drainage systems are also provided to account for the interests of professional engineers and environmental scientists. This revised edition deals with the design, operation, maintenance, and water quality monitoring of traditional and novel wetland systems, but also provides information on the analysis of asset performance and modeling of treatment processes, along with performances of existing infrastructures in predominantly developed, but also developing countries, and the sustainability and economic issues involved. This new edition contains 10 new chapters, along with multidisciplinary, experimental, and modeling-orientated case study topics that include natural wetlands, constructed treatment wetlands for pollution control, sustainable drainage systems, and specific applications, such as wetlands treating hydrocarbon and ammonia, as well as ecological sanitation systems recycling treated.

Environmental Anthropology - Future Directions (Paperback): Helen Kopnina, Eleanor Shoreman-Ouimet Environmental Anthropology - Future Directions (Paperback)
Helen Kopnina, Eleanor Shoreman-Ouimet
R1,299 Discovery Miles 12 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume presents new theoretical approaches, methodologies, subject pools, and topics in the field of environmental anthropology. Environmental anthropologists are increasingly focusing on self-reflection - not just on themselves and their impacts on environmental research, but also on the reflexive qualities of their subjects, and the extent to which these individuals are questioning their own environmental behavior. Here, contributors confront the very notion of "natural resources" in granting non-human species their subjectivity and arguing for deeper understanding of "nature," and "wilderness" beyond the label of "ecosystem services." By engaging in interdisciplinary efforts, these anthropologists present new ways for their colleagues, subjects, peers and communities to understand the causes of, and alternatives to environmental destruction. This book demonstrates that environmental anthropology has moved beyond the construction of rural, small group theory, entering into a mode of solution-based methodologies and interdisciplinary theories for understanding human-environmental interactions. It is focused on post-rural existence, health and environmental risk assessment, on the realm of alternative actions, and emphasizes the necessary steps towards preventing environmental crisis.

The Dirty Side of the Garment Industry - Fast Fashion and Its Negative Impact on Environment and Society (Hardcover): Nikolay... The Dirty Side of the Garment Industry - Fast Fashion and Its Negative Impact on Environment and Society (Hardcover)
Nikolay Anguelov
R2,712 Discovery Miles 27 120 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

When thinking about lowering or changing consumption to lower carbon footprints, the obvious offenders come easily to mind: petroleum and petroleum products, paper and plastic, even food. But not clothes. Although the clothing industry is the second largest polluter after agriculture, most consumers do not think of clothes as a source of environmental damage. The Dirty Side of the Garment Industry: Fast Fashion and its Negative Impact on Environment and Society exposes how clever marketing tactics designed to increase demand skillfully hide this reality. An in-depth examination of the international fashion trade and related goods, this book raises visibility of the ethical aspects of promoting overconsumption through explaining the ecological damage resulting from the high rate of discarding old clothes. It focuses on the promotion, globalization, and integration of the apparel sector into our social and political landscape. It presents an expert overview of the garment industry, highlighting the harsh realities of the environmental and labor problems associated with it. It tracks the commercial and cultural factors that have led to the growth of fast fashion retail and its dominance of the entire industry. The book covers current regulatory policies, both national and international, on production and labor, and the author does not shy away from making recommendations for change. He examines marketing, business, and economic models to explain how assumptions of traditional economic theory on industrial growth and prosperity fall short in addressing the high social costs of promoting the overconsumption of cheap and readily disposable clothes. You will come away with a detailed, holistic understanding of the garment industry as well as clarity regarding the larger issue of finding balance when it comes to the ethics of consumption.

The Educational Significance of Human and Non-Human Animal Interactions - Blurring the Species Line (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2015):... The Educational Significance of Human and Non-Human Animal Interactions - Blurring the Species Line (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2015)
Suzanne Rice, Ag Rud
R3,288 Discovery Miles 32 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Educational Significance of Human and Non-Human Animal Interactions explores human animal/non-human animal interactions from different disciplinary perspectives, from education policy to philosophy of education and ecopedagogy. The authors refute the idea of anthropocentrism (the belief that human beings are the central or most significant species on the planet) through an ethical investigation into animal and human interactions, and 'real-life' examples of humans and animals living and learning together. In doing so, Rice and Rud outline the idea that interactions between animals and humans are educationally significant and vital in the classroom.

Parasitic Birds and Their Hosts - Studies in Coevolution (Hardcover): Stephen I. Rothstein, Scott K. Robinson Parasitic Birds and Their Hosts - Studies in Coevolution (Hardcover)
Stephen I. Rothstein, Scott K. Robinson
R4,966 Discovery Miles 49 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is the first to present a comprehensive overview of parasitic birds and their hosts. Although the phenomenon has attracted the interest of naturalists and evolutionists since Darwin, only recently have researchers applied modern evolutionary theory and experimental methods to study the various adaptations related to brood parasitism. The work in this field is accelerating rapidly, and this volume collects work from the individuals and research groups around the world who have been responsible for nearly every major study in the last ten years. The papers present valuable summaries along with substantial new research, and the volume concludes with a review of important unsolved questions. The book is an invaluable resource on this fascinating topic, covering the remarkable sequences of adaptations and counter-adaptations, along with the perhaps even more remarkable cases where adaptations seem to be lacking.

The Ecological Importance of Mixed-Severity Fires - Nature's Phoenix (Paperback): Dominick A. DellaSala, Chad T. Hanson The Ecological Importance of Mixed-Severity Fires - Nature's Phoenix (Paperback)
Dominick A. DellaSala, Chad T. Hanson
R1,754 Discovery Miles 17 540 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Ecological Importance of High-Severity Fires, presents information on the current paradigm shift in the way people think about wildfire and ecosystems. While much of the current forest management in fire-adapted ecosystems, especially forests, is focused on fire prevention and suppression, little has been reported on the ecological role of fire, and nothing has been presented on the importance of high-severity fire with regards to the maintenance of native biodiversity and fire-dependent ecosystems and species. This text fills that void, providing a comprehensive reference for documenting and synthesizing fire's ecological role.

For well over 4 billion people - approximately 60% of all humanity - annual income is less than $1,500. The term "Base of the Pyramid" was first coined by Stuart L. Hart and C.K. Prahalad in 2002 and has become synonymous with both the method by which we can more effectively address poverty and the opportunity that exists in a multi-trillion-dollar market. A whole new lexicon has emerged to describe this phenomenon, including new buzzwords and catch phrases like "inclusive business", "opportunities for the majority", "sustainable livelihoods", "pro-poor business" and "social business", and thousands of new businesses, institutions and investment funds have been set up.In this ground-breaking new book, Stuart L. Hart and Fernando Casado Caneque have worked with members of the BoP Global Network to shake the tree, look objectively at what has happened since 2002, highlight why earlier applications of BoP haven't worked and propose new objectives and ways of working to formulate more sustainable solutions. The book challenges the reader and organizations to think about the mindset and purpose across whole organizations, open innovation rather than simply co-creation, and a complete review of the innovation ecosystem. Through this book, practitioners will gain a clearer insight into which business models can work within different communities to ensure a sustainable transition to improved local economies. Equally, the book is a must-read for researchers and students in the fields of entrepreneurship, innovation, sustainable development and environmental management.

Avi Brisman, Nigel South, Rob White
R4,513 Discovery Miles 45 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This impressive collection of original essays explores the relationship between social conflict and the environment - a topic that has received little attention within criminology. The chapters provide a systematic and comprehensive introduction and overview of conflict situations stemming from human exploitation of environments, as well as the impact of social conflicts on the wellbeing and health of specific species and ecosystems. Largely informed by green criminology perspectives, the chapters in the book are intended to stimulate new understandings of the relationships between humans and nature through critical evaluation of environmental destruction and degradation associated with social conflicts occurring around the world. With a goal of creating a typology of environment-social conflict relationships useful for green criminological research, this study is essential reading for scholars and academics in criminology, as well as those interested in crime, law and justice.

Matter and Desire - An Erotic Ecology (Paperback): Andreas Weber Matter and Desire - An Erotic Ecology (Paperback)
Andreas Weber; Foreword by John Elder
R435 R363 Discovery Miles 3 630 Save R72 (17%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Nautilus Award Gold Medal Winner, Ecology & Environment In Matter and Desire, internationally renowned biologist and philosopher Andreas Weber rewrites ecology as a tender practice of forging relationships, of yearning for connections, and of expressing these desires through our bodies. Being alive is an erotic process-constantly transforming the self through contact with others, desiring ever more life. In clever and surprising ways, Weber recognizes that love-the impulse to establish connections, to intermingle, to weave our existence poetically together with that of other beings-is a foundational principle of reality. The fact that we disregard this principle lies at the core of a global crisis of meaning that plays out in the avalanche of species loss and in our belief that the world is a dead mechanism controlled through economic efficiency. Although rooted in scientific observation, Matter and Desire becomes a tender philosophy for the Anthropocene, a "poetic materialism," that closes the gap between mind and matter. Ultimately, Weber discovers, in order to save life on Earth-and our own meaningful existence as human beings-we must learn to love.

Climate Change Adaptation and Development - Transforming Paradigms and Practices (Hardcover): Tor Hakon Inderberg, Siri... Climate Change Adaptation and Development - Transforming Paradigms and Practices (Hardcover)
Tor Hakon Inderberg, Siri Eriksen, Karen O'Brien, Linda Sygna
R4,509 Discovery Miles 45 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

While it is widely recognized that climate change will have significant impacts on the developing world, the social dimensions of vulnerability are often ignored in development projects and practices aimed at promoting adaptation to climate change. This book presents case studies that shed light on the tendency to promote policies and practices that fit conveniently into traditional development paradigms, and explores how development may need to shift focus in relation to climate change adaptation. The chapters offer critical perspectives that challenge many mainstream views on vulnerability, adaptive capacity, resilience, and the role of development projects in the context of climate change. The international case studies illustrate how responses to climate change that are embedded in traditional approaches to development may actually exacerbate vulnerability instead of reducing it. Adaptation projects often focus on dealing with the physical impacts of climate change (increased water scarcity, flooding, heat stress, etc.) through technical interventions, investments in infrastructure, and disaster preparedness, while they rarely call into question the underlying systems and structures that have contributed to the social and economic inequalities (inadequate access to resources, forced displacement, etc). This book presents adaptation as more than isolated decisions, actions, policies or practices aimed at addressing specific changes in the climate, but rather as a collection of on-going processes shaped by social, economic, political, institutional, and cultural dynamics. The book illustrates how approaching adaptation through 'development as usual' is unlikely to promote, maintain or enhance the well-being of populations faced with the complex challenges posed by climate change. Individual, household, community, sectoral and national decisions are seldom solely about climate change, and adaptation strategies may bring conflicts of interest that call for new ways of negotiating and collaborating, and recognition of the existing and emerging power relations that influence whose values and interests prevail in shaping development pathways. While many of the chapters are critical to current approaches to adaptation within the field of development, they also show how development can serve as a pathway towards sustainability. Alternatives are already emerging, and the process of adapting to climate change may itself be transforming development paradigms. This book will help researchers, practitioners and policymakers working at the interface between climate change and development to make sense of the changing dynamics and emerging opportunities, to enable efforts that work to create a better life for everyone.

Nature, Choice and Social Power (Hardcover): Erica Schoenberger Nature, Choice and Social Power (Hardcover)
Erica Schoenberger
R4,499 Discovery Miles 44 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

We are at an environmental impasse. Many blame our personal choices about the things we consume and the way we live. This is only part of the problem. Different forms of social power - political, economic and ideological - structure the choices we have available. This book analyses how we make social and environmental history and why we end up where we do. Using case studies from different environmental domains - earth and water, air and fire - Nature, Choice and Social Power examines the form that social power takes and how it can harm the environment and hinder our efforts to act in our own best interests. The case studies challenge conventional wisdoms about why gold is valuable, why the internal combustion engine triumphed, and when and why suburbs sprawled. The book shows how the power of individuals, the power of classes, the power of the market and the power of the state at different times and in different ways were critical to setting us on a path to environmental degradation. It also challenges conventional wisdoms about what we need to do now. Rather than reducing consumption and shrinking from outcomes we don't want, it proposes growing towards outcomes we do want. We invested massive resources in creating our problems; it will take equally large investments to fix them. Written in a clear and engaging style, the book is underpinned with a political economy framework and addresses how we should understand our responsibility to the environment and to each other as individuals within a large and impersonal system.

George Christakos, Jinfeng Wang, Jiaping Wu
R3,094 Discovery Miles 30 940 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The validity of certain critical reasoning steps carried out during or on the sidelines of the environmental science, public health survey, medical experiment, population risk assessment, or disease space-time mapping under conditions of in situ uncertainty and space-time heterogeneity, is often not given sufficient attention and may even be out of the investigator's line of thought. For example, the technical complexity of an environmental exposure experiment may overshadow the logical assumptions made when moving from one phase of the experiment to the next, or the study of population risk assessment may focus on analytical and computational matters, whereas methodological and cultural factors are neglected. This book helps health investigators structure their thinking so that they avoid logical mistakes and argument pitfalls, and also gain new insights about reality, improve their awareness of the environment and context within which one's thinking takes place.

Troubles with Turtles - Cultural Understandings of the Environment on a Greek Island (Hardcover): Dimitris Theodossopoulos Troubles with Turtles - Cultural Understandings of the Environment on a Greek Island (Hardcover)

."the book has a number of things to recommend it, particularly for undergraduate teaching, as its scale and readability would be an ethnographic asset for courses on, for example, anthropology and the environment. Its material also provides a number of teachable opportunities, both critically and historically." . Human Ecology "Though predominantly informative about Greek rural life, the book constitutes an illustrative and informative account about human relationships with the natural world more generally." . H-Environment The people of Vassilikos, farmers and tourist entrepreneurs on the Greek island of Zakynthos, are involved in a bitter environmental dispute concerning the conservation of sea turtles. Against the environmentalists' practices and ideals they set their own culture of relating to the land, cultivation, wild and domestic animals. Written from an anthropological perspective, this book puts forward the idea that a thorough study of indigenous cultures is a fundamental step to understanding conflicts over the environment. For this purpose, the book offers a detailed account of the cultural depth and richness of the human environmental relationship in Vassilikos, focusing on the engagement of its inhabitants with diverse aspects of the local environment, such as animal care, agriculture, tourism and hunting. Dimitris Theodossopoulos is a lecturer in Social Anthropology at the University of Bristol and a senior research fellow at St Peter's College, Oxford. In the early nineties he carried out fieldwork on environmental politics and the indigenous perceptions of the environment in rural Greece. He is currently teaching anthropology and writing on a variety of themes, ranging from the human-environmental relationship to the ethnography of conflict and nationalism in the Balkans. His most recent field of interest focuses on Greek attitudes towards the Turks and the Greco-Turkish politics of friendship."

The Gulf War Aftermath - An Environmental Tragedy (Hardcover): Muhammad Sadiq, John C. McCain The Gulf War Aftermath - An Environmental Tragedy (Hardcover)
Muhammad Sadiq, John C. McCain
R2,435 Discovery Miles 24 350 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The invasion and occupation of Kuwait by the Iraqi forces and the resulting Gulf War in 1991 led to unprecedented environmental contamination, the effects of which will be felt for years to come. The air was polluted by emissions from hundreds of burning oil wells, the sea fouled by the largest oil spill in history, and the land scarred by massive bombardment and troop movement. Information regarding this environmental legacy of the Gulf War has hitherto been scattered throughout the popular and scientific press. This is the first book that brings together what is currently known about the environmental aftermath of this tragic war.
