The book also explores interfacial systems for a wide variety of phenomena, including: absorption, flotation, osmosis, and colloidal stability.
This book offers an up-to-date coverage of the basic principles and of the tools of Bayesian inference in econometrics. Bayesian inference is a branch of statistics that integrates explicitly both data and prior (possibly subjective) information in model building , estimation and evaluation. The book then shows how to use Bayesian methods in a range of models especially suited to the analysis of macroeconomic and financial time series.
Focuses on the argument that performance modelling and simulation has become a central issue in computer science and engineering, in part due to its applications to the structures comprising the internet. Dealing primarily with theory, tools, and techniques related to communications systems, it provides tutorials and surveys and relates new important research results. Each chapter provides background information, describes and analyses important work done in the field, and provides important direction to the reader on future work and further readings. The topics covered include traffic models for ATM networks, simulation environments, analytical methods, interprocessor communications and an evaluation of process architectures.
Authors Ita G. G. Kreft and Jan de Leeuw have provided the first accessible and practical guide to using multilevel models in social research. Multilevel approaches are becoming increasingly important in social, behavioral, and educational research and it is clear from recent developments that such models are seen as more realisticùand potentially more revealingùthan ordinary regression models. While other books describe these multilevel models in considerable detail none focus on the practical issues and potential problems of doing multilevel analyses that are covered in Introducing Multilevel Modeling. The authorsÆ approach is user-oriented, keeping formal mathematics and statistics to a minimum. Other key features include the use of worked examples using real data sets, analyzed using the leading computer package for multilevel modeling.
Genetic algorithms have been used in science and engineering as adaptive algorithms for solving practical problems and as computational models of natural evolutionary systems. This brief, accessible introduction describes some of the most interesting research in the field and also enables readers to implement and experiment with genetic algorithms on their own. It focuses in depth on a small set of important and interesting topics -- particularly in machine learning, scientific modeling, and artificial life -- and reviews a broad span of research, including the work of Mitchell and her colleagues. The descriptions of applications and modeling projects stretch beyond the strict boundaries of computer science to include dynamical systems theory, game theory, molecular biology, ecology, evolutionary biology, and population genetics, underscoring the exciting "general purpose" nature of genetic algorithms as search methods that can be employed across disciplines. "An Introduction to Genetic Algorithms" is accessible to students and researchers in any scientific discipline. It includes many thought and computer exercises that build on and reinforce the reader's understanding of the text. The first chapter introduces genetic algorithms and their terminology and describes two provocative applications in detail. The second and third chapters look at the use of genetic algorithms in machine learning (computer programs, data analysis and prediction, neural networks) and in scientific models (interactions among learning, evolution, and culture; sexual selection; ecosystems; evolutionary activity). Several approaches to the theory of genetic algorithms are discussed in depth in the fourth chapter. The fifth chapter takes up implementation, and the last chapter poses some currently unanswered questions and surveys prospects for the future of evolutionary computation.

Most books covering the use of computer models in agricultural management systems target only one or two types of models. There are few texts available that cover the subject of systems modeling comprehensively and that deal with various approaches, applications, evaluations, and uses for technology transfer. Agricultural System Models in Field Research and Technology Transfer fills this need. It presents the latest advances in the use of various computer models in agricultural management systems.
This volume describes a cognitive model of student programmers, and an implementation of that model that allows student programmers to be simulated. The focus of the model is on the problem solving that students perform to generate both correct and buggy programs as well as on the individual differences that cause different students to generate different programs for the same programming task. By developing a taxonomy of student programmer knowledge; a model of student program generation; and a preliminary model of individual differences, this research contributes to a better understanding of four areas of the study of student programmers. The most important claim is that a cognitive model of student program generation fits within a properly fleshed out generate test-and-debug (GTD) problem solving architecture in which impasse/repair knowledge plays a key role. This research is important theoretically because it explores the use of a GTD impasse/repair problem solving architecture in a new domain, and important practically because of its educational implications for programming instructions.
The purpose of the UML Dictionary is to address the need for an authoritative illustrated dictionary about UML, the standard visual modeling language for specifying, constructing, visualizing, and documenting the artifacts of a software-intensive system. The book specifies a modeling language that incorporates the object-oriented community's consensus on core modeling concepts. The book, which contains a CD with the book's contents in searchable PDF format, is an authoritative, standard illustrated dictionary with liberal cross-referencing per the material on a related website. The site contains 800 distinct terms, and the dictionary contains additional diagrams and resources. The dictionary is suitable for a broad audience and anyone interested in the UML, its terms, and the notation associated with the terms. Although there are no prerequisites for reading the material, knowledge of basic object-oriented concepts would be beneficial.
Part I highlights the emerging role of power electronic apparatus in power transmission and distribution networks. It also discusses topics in modeling and simulation as pertaining to the utilization of power electronics in large power networks. Part II presents different power electronic converter assemblies for power transmission and power quality enhancement. These are presented in conjunction with suitable models which the readers using the book for self-study need to conduct parametric analyses or as a starting point for future research. The aim of the book is to provide a new approach to power-electronic systems, where modeling becomes an essential part of the study process. The book therefore could be used in a graduate-level course that discusses power electronic components in transmission and distribution. It will also be a valuable resource to the practicing engineers and researchers who want to develop models for emerging circuits.
Presenting a method for the analysis of ecological ecosystems using numerical models, this text describes the development of these models by means of relational diagrams and rate equations. The calculation of the dynamic behaviour of the models is studied through small computer programs. The approach is illustrated by treating examples ranging from simple exponential growth to the development of an insect population and transport phenomena in soils. About 100 worked examples clarify the theoretical concepts presented and give the book a tutorial nature. The examples often illustrate the process, from defining the problem to the development of a computer program. Examples include models about yeasts, prey-predator interactions, pollutant and organic matter dynamics and heat flow in soil. A simulation language is used to develop the programs, so that the need to learn technical programming details is minimized and attention can be focused on the ecological problem. Use of this language is described in the text. The book concludes with the presentation of a simulation environment in FORTRAN, assuring a high model portability. Those interested in applying systems analysis and simulation in the study of ecological processes, like biologists, agriculturalists and soil scientists, should find this book a valuable introduction. After studying the book, readers should be able to develop their own models and to critically follow the literature on more complex ecosystem models.

The authors have developed a computer program that can be of valuable assistance in surgical decision-making for strabismus surgery. The combination of diagnostic data of individual surgical cases, related diagnosis and treatments are incorporated into a well designed, clinically applicable software system. A new way of interactive, virtual eye muscle surgery and preoperative planning is proposed, based on a biomechanical model of the human eye, which enables the prediction of surgical outcomes on the basis of objective, anatomically related and measured data. Additionally, a realistic three-dimensional visualization of the human eyes and their muscles is used to support detailed evaluation and meaningful interpretation of eye motility disorders. This software system is not intended to replace common clinical diagnostics, nor surgical expertise but it should improve the accuracy of clinical decisions in an objective manner.
This book, written in two volumes, is an introductory manual for Magma, a programming language designed for the investigation of algebraic, geometric and combinatorial structures, or "magmas." It presumes no knowledge of computer programming, and its examples are chosen to illustrate language and algorithmic features as simply as possible. Magma is a sophisticated tool for experimentation, education, and computer-aided proof, useful for both students and professional mathematicians. Volume I explains the language and user environment in detail, whereas Volume II deals with the major algebraic, geometrical and combinatorial structures implemented in the system.

While the existing literature on offshore structures touch on model testing, a comprehensive text discussing the design, construction, instrumentation, testing and analysis of the physical model is lacking. This book fills that vacuum and provides, through its survey of the theoretical and practical aspects of physical modeling, an in-depth coverage of the technology of model testing. Its usefulness runs through the entire field of engineering, reaching far beyond its focus on offshore construction; and its breadth of scope should appeal not only to engineers and naval architects but to scientists interested in structural or hydraulic testing as well. |
