The 1994 GWIC was held June 6th, 7th and 8th, 1994, on the Campus of the UNLV. It was sponsored by UNLV, UNR, and ACM-SIGART. The keynote speakers were Prof. Bonnie Weber of the University of Pennsylvania, Prof Stuart Shapiro, Director of the Center for Cognitive Science at SUNY at Buffalo, and Prof. Nicolas Bourbakis of SUNY at Binghamton. Dr. Bonnie Webber, the first keynote speaker, presented the first talk of the conference Monday morning June 6th, entitled "Instructing Animated Agents: Natural Language and Human Figure Animation". Her one hour lecture and the computer graphics video in which figures emulating realistically humans were able to successfully perform a number of human motions and functions, were very well received by the participants. Dr. Stuart Shapiro, presented his keynote speech, entitled "Formalizing English", Tues day morning, June 7th. His objective was to construct a natural language using an intelli gent agent. His talk was of great interest and drew a great deal of discussion and questions by the participants. "The Role of AI in Multimedia Information Systems", was the topic presented by the third keynote speaker, Dr. N. Bourbakis, Wednesday morning June 8th. He addressed the changes in computing with the introduction of Multimedia and the usage of AI to store and retrieve intelligently massive visual, audio, and other data.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the 10th International Workshop on Graphics Recognition, GREC 2013, held in Bethlehem, PA, USA, in August 2013. The 20 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 32 initial submissions. Graphics recognition is a subfield of document image analysis that deals with graphical entities in engineering drawings, sketches, maps, architectural plans, musical scores, mathematical notation, tables, and diagrams. Accordingly the conference papers are organized in 5 topical sessions on symbol spotting and retrieval, graphics recognition in context, structural and perceptual based approaches, low level processing, and performance evaluation and ground truthing.
Riding on the success of 3D cinema blockbusters and advances in stereoscopic display technology, 3D video applications have gathered momentum in recent years. 3D-TV System with Depth-Image-Based Rendering: Architectures, Techniques and Challenges surveys depth-image-based 3D-TV systems, which are expected to be put into applications in the near future. Depth-image-based rendering (DIBR) significantly enhances the 3D visual experience compared to stereoscopic systems currently in use. DIBR techniques make it possible to generate additional viewpoints using 3D warping techniques to adjust the perceived depth of stereoscopic videos and provide for auto-stereoscopic displays that do not require glasses for viewing the 3D image. The material includes a technical review and literature survey of components and complete systems, solutions for technical issues, and implementation of prototypes. Information theory has proved to be effective for solving many computer vision and pattern recognition (CVPR) problems (such as image matching, clustering and segmentation, saliency detection, feature selection, optimal classifier design and many others). Nowadays, researchers are widely bringing information theory elements to the CVPR arena. Among these elements there are measures (entropy, mutual information...), principles (maximum entropy, minimax entropy...) and theories (rate distortion theory, method of types...). This book explores and introduces the latter elements through an incremental complexity approach at the same time where CVPR problems are formulated and the most representative algorithms are presented. Interesting connections between information theory principles when applied to different problems are highlighted, seeking a comprehensive research roadmap. The result is a novel tool both for CVPR and machine learning researchers, and contributes to a cross-fertilization of both areas.
In Computer Graphics, the use of intelligent techniques started more recently than in other research areas. However, during these last two decades, the use of intelligent Computer Graphics techniques is growing up year after year and more and more interesting techniques are presented in this area. The purpose of this volume is to present current work of the Intelligent Computer Graphics community, a community growing up year after year. This volume is a kind of continuation of the previously published Springer volumes "Artificial Intelligence Techniques for Computer Graphics" (2008), "Intelligent Computer Graphics 2009" (2009), "Intelligent Computer Graphics 2010" (2010) and "Intelligent Computer Graphics 2011" (2011). Usually, this kind of volume contains, every year, selected extended papers from the corresponding 3IA Conference of the year. However, the current volume is made from directly reviewed and selected papers, submitted for publication in the volume "Intelligent Computer Graphics 2012". This year papers are particularly exciting and concern areas like plant modelling, text-to-scene systems, information visualization, computer-aided geometric design, artificial life, computer games, realistic rendering and many other very important themes.
Analysis, assessment, and data management are core tools required for operation research analysts. The April 2011 conference held at the Helenic Military Academy addressed these issues with efforts to collect valuable recommendations for improving analysts' capabilities to assess and communicate the necessary qualitative data to military leaders. Image processing is concerned with the analysis and manipulation of images by computer. Since the early 20th century, medical imaging has been dominated by monochrome imaging modalities such as x-ray, computed tomography, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging. As a result, color information has been overlooked in medical image analysis applications. Recently, various medical imaging modalities that involve color information have been introduced. These include cervicography, dermoscopy, fundus photography, gastrointestinal endoscopy, microscopy, and wound photography. However, in comparison to monochrome images, the analysis of color images is a relatively unexplored area. The multivariate nature of color image data presents new challenges for researchers and practitioners as the numerous methods developed for monochrome images are often not directly applicable to multichannel images. The goal of this volume is to summarize the state-of-the-art in the utilization of color information in medical image analysis.
Matrix-valued data sets - so-called second order tensor fields - have gained significant importance in scientific visualization and image processing due to recent developments such as diffusion tensor imaging. Image processing algorithms based on the mammalian visual cortex are powerful tools for extraction information and manipulating images. This book reviews the neural theory and translates them into digital models. Applications are given in areas of image recognition, foveation, image fusion and information extraction. The third edition reflects renewed international interest in pulse image processing with updated sections presenting several newly developed applications. This edition also introduces a suite of Python scripts that assist readers in replicating results presented in the text and to further develop their own applications.
One of the important issues of Scientific Visualization is the utilization of the broad bandwidth of the human sensory system in steering and interpreting complex processes and simulations involving voluminous data sets across diverse scientific disciplines. This book presents the state-of-the-art in visualization techniques both as an overview for the inquiring scientist, and as a solid platform from which developers may extend existing techniques or devise new ones to meet the specific needs of their problems. A secondary goal in crafting this volume has been to provide a vehicle for teaching of state-of-the-art techniques in scientific visualization. The first part of the book covers the application areas fluid flow visualization in medicine, and environmental protection. The second set of chapters explain fundamentals of scientific visualization. It comprises contributions on data structuring and data administration, data modeling, and rendering. A final section is devoted to auditory representation of scientific data.
This book constitutes the proceedings of the 16th International Workshop on Computer Algebra in Scientific Computing, CASC 2014, held in Warsaw, Poland, in September 2014. The 33 full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in this book. The papers address issues such as Studies in polynomial algebra are represented by contributions devoted to factoring sparse bivariate polynomials using the priority queue, the construction of irreducible polynomials by using the Newton index, real polynomial root finding by means of matrix and polynomial iterations, application of the eigenvalue method with symmetry for solving polynomial systems arising in the vibration analysis of mechanical structures with symmetry properties, application of Groebner systems for computing the (absolute) reduction number of polynomial ideals, the application of cylindrical algebraic decomposition for solving the quantifier elimination problems, certification of approximate roots of overdetermined and singular polynomial systems via the recovery of an exact rational univariate representation from approximate numerical data, new parallel algorithms for operations on univariate polynomials (multi-point evaluation, interpolation) based on subproduct tree techniques.
Computational intelligence based techniques have firmly established themselves as viable, alternate, mathematical tools for more than a decade. They have been extensively employed in many systems and application domains, among these signal processing, automatic control, industrial and consumer electronics, robotics, finance, manufacturing systems, electric power systems, and power electronics. Image processing is also an extremely potent area which has attracted the atten tion of many researchers who are interested in the development of new computational intelligence-based techniques and their suitable applications, in both research prob lems and in real-world problems. Part I of the book discusses several image preprocessing algorithms; Part II broadly covers image compression algorithms; Part III demonstrates how computational intelligence-based techniques can be effectively utilized for image analysis purposes; and Part IV shows how pattern recognition, classification and clustering-based techniques can be developed for the purpose of image inferencing. This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed conference proceedings of the 6th International Symposium on Biomedical Simulation (ISBMS) which was held in Strasbourg, France, in October 2014. Biomedical modeling and simulation are at the center stage of worldwide efforts to understand and replicate the behavior and function of the human organism. Large scale initiatives such as the Physiome Project, Virtual Physiological Human and Blue Brain Project aim to develop advanced computational models that will facilitate the understanding of the integrative function of cells, organs, and organisms, with the ultimate goal of delivering truly personalized medicine.
