This publication contains over 6000 drink concoctions collected in
over five hundred cities, towns, little hamlets and many villages
in over fifty countries and all of the fifty states. That is almost
three times the number of recipes in any other drink book that has
been published up to this time. The drink recipes and other bits of
information and humor were collected over a period of fifty-two
years of traveling, dining, drinking and working in the Hotel and
Restaurant industry. Most of the recipes were told to me by
bartenders, wine stewards, wine producers, distillery managers,
liquor salesmen, brew masters and drinking folk that I met in my
travels, including a "white lightning" entrepreneur. Throughout
this book there are hundreds of jokes, quotes, toasts, quips,
statements, recommended name brand alcoholic delights, ways to make
your own, serious and amusing anecdotes and philosophies by famous
and infamous people that I have collected in my travels or enjoyed
over a cocktail in some distant oasis. I have tried to give proper
credit, where credit is due; but for those that I can find no
origin, I simply call them "Trixieism's" You be the judge."

The history began in 1923, when bootlegger and boxing promoter Owen
"Owney" Madden took over the Club Deluxe at 646 Lenox Avenue in
Harlem and renamed it the Cotton Club. Madden enforced a strict
color line at his club. While the Cotton Club featured many of the
greatest African American entertainers of the era, such as Fletcher
Henderson, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Bessie Smith, Cab Calloway,
The Nicholas Brothers, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Nat King
Cole, Billie Holiday, and Ethel Waters, it generally denied
admission to blacks. In 1936, the managers decided that Harlem had
become unfashionable, and moved the club downtown, to Broadway at
48th Street. In 1939, Charlie Conolly, head barman at New York's
Players Club, was hired to standardize drink formulas and create
new cocktails for the club. His recipes were privately published in
1939, one year before the demise of the club. This edition has been
reproduced from a rare copy of the original "Cotton Club: 1939 Book
of Mixed Drinks." It reflects the style, flavor and, unfortunately,
the mild imperfections of the printing processes of that era.
North Shields and Tynemouth, historically united, lie on the north
bank of the River Tyne. North Shields grew up as a fishing port
serving the Priory of Tynemouth on the headland. As other
industries moved into North Shields, particularly shipbuilding, the
town expanded from its site along the riverbank to accommodate the
workers, absorbing villages nearby. Latterly, much of the town,
including its historic quayside area, has been regenerated. Nearby
Tynemouth remained smaller and today attracts many visitors to its
beaches and historical landmarks, particularly the castle and
priory. In North Shields & Tynemouth Pubs, author Eileen
Burnett takes the reader on a fascinating journey through the
towns' watering holes. Many of the pubs have retained features and
traditions of previous ages, and she reveals the variety of North
Shields' and Tynemouth's pubs, including the characters that have
frequented or run the public houses over the years. Brimming with
quirky tales and fascinating facts, this carefully crafted guide
initiates readers into the history of North Shields' and
Tynemouth's pubs.
Clerkenwell and Islington are two of London's most historic
districts; areas where radicalism once thrived and heavy industry
flourished, and where poverty and lawlessness were commonplace.
This diverse and colourful history can be traced in the area's many
pubs. The ancient parish of Clerkenwell, located just outside the
City of London's walls, was historically the home of the Knights
Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem. Later, it became famous for
its watchmaking and printing industry. Dickens knew Clerkenwell,
and it features in Oliver Twist, while it was here that Vladimir
Lenin sowed the nascent seeds of Communism and in Little Italy
Garibaldi was welcomed as a hero. But revolution and picking
pockets is thirsty work, and the area's pubs were plentiful and
varied. Islington, further north, was once a country retreat far
away from the noise and industry of the city, but today this once
solidly working-class area, now favoured by the rich and the
famous, is boisterous and busy and boasts a mixture of traditional
hostelries, gastropubs and craft beer bars. Clerkenwell and
Islington Pubs takes an historical, and sometimes contemporary,
look at some of the area's most interesting watering holes;
drinking destinations that down the years have played host to a
varied cast of characters that includes the likes of Samuel Pepys,
Joe Orton, The Clash, U2, George Orwell and even James I.
The history of coffee is much more than the tale of one
nonessential good-it is a lens through which to consider various
strands of world history, from food and foodways to religion and
economics and sociocultural history. A Rich and Tantalizing Brew
traces the history of the coffee bean, beginning with its
cultivation and brewing as a private pleasure in the highlands of
Ethiopia and Yemen before its emergence as a common comfort, first
in the Muslim world, then across the Mediterranean to Italy, other
parts of Europe, and beyond to India and the Americas. At each of
these stops the brew gathered ardent aficionados and vocal critics,
all the while reshaping the social landscape. Taking its
conversational tone from the chats often held over a steaming cup,
A Rich and Tantalizing Brew offers a critical and entertaining look
at how this bitter beverage, with a little help from the tastes
that traveled with it-chocolate, tea, and sugar-has connected
people to each other both within and outside of their typical
circles, inspiring a new context for sharing news, conducting
business affairs, and even plotting revolution.
