This accessible and comprehensive book shines a light on the design history of the famous Anglepoise lamp. Starting with the beginnings of the company with George Carwardine, the designer behind the lamp, the book takes you through an illuminating journey of the development and influence of this British icon. In 1932, vehicle suspension engineer George Carwardine designed the spring, crank and lever mechanism that became the blueprint for the first Anglepoise lamp. Enchanting the world with its light-to-the-touch and anthropomorphic design, the unique and characterful form has adorned the worktables of everyone, from writers to engineers, from the Second World War through to the 21st century. Cozy as it is utilitarian, the intimately focused pool of light the Anglepoise creates around an individual's work is as poetic as it is practical. Today, the lamp is a sure sign of quality and has been hailed as a hallmark of British design. Spring Light details a fascinating history of this household item that the armchair architect, designer and engineer will enjoy. Chapters include: Foreword by Sir John Hegarty A Question of Balance: An introduction to the design Light Engineering: Designer George Carwardine's beginnings Darkness Visible: the Anglepoise in the Second World War and industry Lamps for Sale: the launch of the Anglepoise Model 1227 through advertising Lighting by Design: the development of the Anglepoise lamp from the 1970s through to the 2000s - with collaborations with Paul Smith and Margaret Howell Lights for Sore Eyes: the success of the design and imitations Anglepoise goes to the Movies: the Anglepoise in films Undimmed Light: the future of Anglepoise and new designs In the Beginning: a ruminative essay on the lamp - the pools of light it creates and its unique lightweight engineering - by Jonathan Glancey.

Intermediate Examination Paper from the year 2011 in the subject Design (Industry, Graphics, Fashion), grade: 1.3, Berlin Technical University of Art - private university for design, language: English, abstract: Magazines today face unique challenges: Readers have learned that free, high quality content is ubiquitous on the Internet, that design is more than just an appealing layout, that attention spans are dynamic and media choices are overwhelming. The start of the iPad and the tablet device market leads many magazine producers to embrace this technology, from The New Yorker and TIME Magazine to Wired and Vogue. But doubts remain: Here comes another new market of media gadgets to challenge existing print magazine brands. How does it impact the way readers consume media? Will it be a vehicle for existing brands, or will it mostly spawn new ones? Will readers follow up on their online subscriptions when a free digital magazine is just a click away? These challenges need to be addressed, and by highlighting the differences between the iPad and "old media" print magazines, it can be shown that magazine producers can certainly use this technology to their advantages. Bringing an existing magazine brand to the iPad may mean rethinking reader participation and experiences, the creative process and workflow of an editorial team may have to be reshaped, and the editorial design reinvented. Never have readers been more entitled to influence their media mix, but where can media producers draw a line? Apple's tablet device is unique in that it combines a specific set of features on a particularly restrictive platform, and in its reception by a worldwide audience. It is especially this device that may help magazine producers take the next step in the evolution of Editorial Design and reader experience, through employing rich media contents, enabling users to choose curated contents by desire, and creating an immersive experience of the brand. The first part of this paper c

Publishers Weekly Review: This basic guide to oriental rugs is organized to the advantage of the novice collector. A comprehensive section describes and illustrates the 41 most common motifs (geometric, floral and medallion styles and their variations) and the geographic areas where these motifs are produced. Once the motif of a rug is identified, readers can find a listing of the villages or tribes that characteristically employ that design, and can further discriminate according to the type of weave used in each region. Persian, Caucasian, Turkish and Turkoman rugs are covered, as well as those made in India, Pakistan and Roumania. BACKCOVER: There are numerous "Coffee table" art books available that serve as a catalogue of some Oriental rugs. Although useful, most of these books tend to leave people confused and are more akin to a museum catalogue than serving as a useful working book for one intending to purchase or identify oriental rugs. Invaluable for the prospective owner and experienced collector, the "Beginner's Guide to Oriental Rugs" presents clear illustrations of many of the most common designs found in Oriental rugs. Along with these designs are descriptions of the various rug makers that use the designs. To help refine things, the designs are followed by a detailed description of the rugs produced by each of the major rug producing tribes or towns. Complete advice is also given on evaluating a carpet, what makes one carpet more valuable than another, and how to take care of a carpet once you have it. Other useful features include a glossary, maps of all major rug producing areas, the history of Oriental rugs and how the carpets are made, etc. Here is the one book you will need to identify, evaluate and purchase oriental rugs. AUTHOR BIO: Linda Kline has been collecting Oriental rugs for almost two decades and has traveled extensively in her endeavor. She has encountered hundreds of people in this profession and offers the Beginner's Guide to Oriental Rugs as a way to reduce the amount of time, money and effort the average person faces when considering purchasing oriental rugs. Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Design (Industry, Graphics, Fashion), grade: 2,0, language: English, abstract: Digital printing is a new dimension in textile printing. Compared to conventional methods there are many strengths, but also weaknesses. As far as the design process is concerned, the digital technology has an impact, to some extent being able to produce small, highly individual patterns, at a lower price and with a lower lead time than traditionally. These facts also positively support the trend of mass customization. Currently some designers embrace the new technology but at the same time it is also criticised. Key Words: digital textile printing, textile design, ink-jet printing, design influence.
