This book started as a self-serving exercise to personally organize the major details and interesting facts of each Indianapolis 500 over the 100-year history of the greatest race in the world. For many of us passionate racing fans who have attended a multitude of "500s," there is a tendency for the details of the races to (somewhat) blend together. I hope this book will help to provide clarity in this regard, as well as educate. During high school, many of us chose to use CliffsNotes to assist in the education process. This book is somewhat patterned after that concept. It falls somewhere between Donald Davidson and Rick Schaffer's Autocourse Official History of the Indianapolis 500-the best and by far the most detailed book on the history of the Indianapolis 500-and a multitude of pictorial books with limited information. I hope it will prove to be an easy read with entertaining and educational information.
In the title story, Kirk wrenches and wrecks hot rods, and goes to school. Those who recall the 1970s culture of muscle cars and motorcycles will grin at the moto-craziness and the mostly harmless hooliganism of the era. The book is also filled with stories of riding and wrenching those fun-filled hot rods of the two-wheeled variety. Kirk not only describes their mechanical challenges, but also the great rewards granted to those who ride them.
This story describes USAC sprint car racing in the early 1960s and a driver named Stan Bowman. It captures Bowman's win at the first USAC sprint car race at Eldora Speedway in 1962. Bowman also captured the attention of Clint Brawner, the legendary Indianapolis 500 mechanic of that era.The story is told through the eyes of Diane Beck Lane, who was daughter of Harold Beck, the owner of Bowman's race car at Eldora in 1962. In 2012, Eldora Speedway, now owned by Tony Stewart, honored the 50th anniversary of Bowman's victory and Diane Beck Lane now retells the legend of Stan Bowman in the golden era in USAC sprint car racing.
The best dual-sport and off-road motorcycle adventure riding reports from Team Ruptured Buzzard include the chronicles of Stovebolt and his friends as they rally across dusty tracks in the desert and mountains, caught up in the slipstreams of adventure from Baja, Nevada, Idaho and Montana. Gritty and down to earth, the pages unfold one after another, inviting readers to pause in reflection around a campfire under starry skies and then hang on for dear life while racing across a desert floor on the outskirts of Area 51 as fighter jets patrol overhead. While not a guidebook, it will entertain and perhaps inspire readers to get out there and track down dreams of their own; sucking marrow from the bones along the way. And, to Never Give Up
Following the success of his first book, Drag Racing 101, where IH Racing's Team Owner Ike Heckler Jr. explains how to build your first race car and secure sponsorship, Ike now brings you Drag Racing 201 - Racing in the New Economy. After racing at NHRA tracks in the northeast and southeast for the past 10 years in a booming economy where securing sponsorships was relatively easy, Ike takes you on an exciting journey through 2010 and explains what it is like to uproot your personal life in order to pursue the goal of semi-pro drag racing. With over 52 career round wins and national media exposure from SPEED TV's Pinks All Out, NHRA's National Dragster, and NMCA's Fastest Street Car magazine, Ike has secured corporate sponsorships from Lucas Oil, VP Racing Fuels, WIX Filters, O'Reilly Auto Parts, ReMax Realty, Holiday Inn Hotels & Resorts, CARQUEST Auto Parts, and Ken's Speed & Machine. IH Racing's primary sponsor, Premier Properties of the Space Coast, is owned by Mr. Heckler and develops residential and commercial properties in southeast Florida. In Drag Racing 201 Ike explains how to use your own company together with your other sponsors to be able to fund a full race season and be able to travel the hundreds of miles from racetrack to racetrack economically. From getting into the Final 32 at the Pinks All Out event in West Palm, FL to making the WIX All Out 16 at the Pinks All Out event at zMax Dragway in Charlotte, Ike brings you along to all the other races and other fun events he was able to attend in 2010 with the help of good friends and sponsors. You will also ride along as he moves from Florida to North Carolina, then back to Florida just so he could honor his commitment to all his sponsors and race the season. He will also show you how the degrading economy affected his racing operation in 2010 and how he had to adjust and sacrifice his personal life to be able to race and survive. Drag Racing 201 then looks into the future of the sport and projects how it may look a few years from now and gives the reader some valuable tips on how to afford racing a full season and how the racer may have to live differently in order to race and live their dream. Ike also gives the reader some valuable sponsorship tips along the way that will help with sponsor exposure and could make securing sponsorships a little easier. So get in your race car, strap in, and hold on because you are about to experience what it feels like to be "Racing in the New Economy" This 80 page full color book has over 75 pictures highlighting the West Palm FL, Charlotte NC, and the Bristol TN Pinks All Out events (and getting on SPEED TV), the Atlanta, NHRA Unleashed event, and what it feels like to work for an NHRA national event. For the past fifty years and more, Harley-Davidson has been ruling some racing roosts. Its competition iron has always been significant, often supremely victorious and never without passion. To borrow a term from another scene, this is a book about "hog power."What were H-D's competition bikes? How did they fare? And who were the heroes who rode them? Allan Girdler, noted wordsmith, historian and straight-talking H-D enthusiast, digs deep to bring fresh perspective, technical analysis, and rider anecdote to this substantial and fascinating story of America's most successful racing motorcycles. His "review" starts in the early 1930s, after the board tracks, after the overpowering success of the Wrecking Crew and its eight-valve twins, after the ear-splitting Pea Shooters, at the beginning of a new era of American racing organized by a reorganized AMA. A time ripe for a new style of Harley racer based loosely on production designs. Read of the XLR, CR, CRS, CRTT, KRTT, XR-750, XR1000, and many more. Learn about Len Andres, Bill Huber, Bart Markel, Jay Springsteen, Chris Carr, Scott Parker, Dick O'Brien, and other racing stars. This is an engaging, passionate story by acclaimed motorcycle and automobile writer, Allan Girdler. Allan is a former editor for "Car Life," "Cycle World," and "Road & Track" magazine. He has authored numerous books including "Harley-Davidson Sportster" and "Harley-Davidson XR-750."
In motorsports there have been an endless series of performance advances where one wonders, how did they ever figure this out? Other times one asks, how did they not see this when the answer was there for all to see? These are the stories of discovery by 3 generations of racers and designers, who changed the state of the art forever. It is also the story of clever tricks and rule book interpretation to win the ever-escalating contest between rule makers and loophole seekers, told by those directly involved in Formula One, Le Mans, Indycar, IMSA, Moto GP, Trans-Am and NASCAR. Their innovations dazzled us all.
Aloha, I'm Kevin Katzenberg and I have something pretty special in store for you. I've taken a slice of what I have learned over the past twenty five years as a mechanic and car builder in the dirt track racing industry and put it inside this easy to read easy to understand book. The focus is mainly the dirt late model and dirt modified race cars, but the general principles I illustrate can be easily supplied to any type of dirt race car or any race car in general. Here is just a little hint of what is inside: Why softening the right front spring will add side bite as well as forward bite to your car. (Chapter 23, page 84) How to determine the amount of wedge you need to bring your car to life. (Chapter 21, page 77) The common misinterpretation about how the panhard bar actually works and how to properly adjust it for your driving style. (Chapter 5, page 28) Why lowering the right side four link (instead of raising them) adds side bite and traction. (Chapter 22, page ) The three core factors which make your car fast ... everything else builds off of these three. (Chapter 1) Real world examples of on track tuning and how to strategize like a winning driver. (Chapter 24) The most overlooked factor on a dirt race car which probably will make the biggest difference in the handling of your car. (Chapter 2) If your getting frustrated with poor or inconsistent results this will be one of the best investments you can make in your racing program. I will not only show you the best way to run your car, but will teach you the foundational principles so you will have the ability to sort your car out on your own. Do any of these apply to you? - Have won features in the past, but struggle to consistantly run up front. - Have come close, but just can't find that "magic" of your first feature win. - Spend all week working on your car and still go to the track with that little voice in the back of your head telling you something just isn't right. If one of these sounds like what you are going through ... this book will set you back on track.

The early career of Don Prudhomme is captured in this spine-tingling account of the 1973 Nationals at Indianapolis Raceway Park. Master writer Hal Higdon spent the race weekend shadowing Prudhomme during a race that was the turning point in The Snake's dominating Funny Car racing career. Higdon captured the weekend drama minute-by-minute as Snake fights for a chance to make history. Along the way, Higdon delves into Prudhomme's history as a racer, giving the reader insight into how Don Prudhomme became a household name in the early 1970s. The account includes Prudhomme's relationship with Tom "Mongoonse" McEwen - the infamous Snake versus Mongoose rivalry that made both men's careers. Higdon takes the readers behind the wheel, into the pits and back along the hard road where years of planning and training reach their climax for a driver within a space of seconds.

At the Ragged Edge chronicles the world's fastest boats and among the most extraordinary of sports spectacles. The focus is on the lives of two of the sport's most famous competitors: Gar Wood was a mechanical genius and a perfectionist. A self-made millionaire who once held more patents than any other living American, he devoted his considerable fortune and skills to becoming the world's greatest speedboat driver. Whether he was fighting off the challenges of racers from other nations, setting speed records, or racing a train down the Hudson River as a publicity stunt, Gar Wood always managed to create a good story for the press and, in the process, became a phenomenon. He was brash, had a vivid imagination and, through his many exploits, became the first to cast national attention on the sport of boatracing. Bill Muncey was a showman and a strategist. At once both cocky and self-effacing, he understood marketing and competed at a time when the ability to represent the sponsor was nearly as important as the ability to push one's foot to the throttle. But, he was skilled on the racecourse, too. He knew how to get the best from his equipment and, most maddening to those he raced against, had the uncanny ability to get into the heads of his fellow competitors and take appropriate advantage. Driving boats capable of traveling the length of a football field in one second, without so much as a seat belt to hold him into his open cockpit, he also knew the sport's danger, the tragedy of losing friends, and the pain of his own harrowing accidents. Along the way, you'll also meet Chris Smith and Ted Jones, two designers and boat builders who would revolutionize the sport; Henry Segrave, one of England's most decorated racers; and Bernie Little, a brash millionaire who spared no expense to have the fastest boat possible. Together, these characters, and many more, tell the fascinating story of hydroplane racing's first one hundred years.
