The bike that is most fun to ride is the bike that you have made
yourself, and the good news is that anyone can do it. This simple
guide walks you through the process, from working out what you
need, creating the specification, sourcing parts, to the enjoyable
weekend spent building your new bike from scratch. When your bike
is finished it will need looking after, and the book includes
equally clear maintenance guidelines; those expensive and
inconvenient trips to the bike shop will become a thing of the
past. Beautifully illustrated by Lee John Phillips, the book is a
useful self-purchase and equally makes a great gift for cyclists
and hobbyists.

the End, Dan uses his own story as well as wider examples and case
studies from the worlds of business, personal development and other

set out and enact the system. A revolutionary new look at a
powerful age-old wisdom, Start at the End is a fascinating
exploration of how we can achieve success and proof that no goal is
impossible. *** 'Start at the End isn't just a great story, but a
really nice reminder of how to approach performance forensically,
intelligently and purposefully – and that these lessons don't
just belong in cycling but in all areas of high performance' Dr
Josie Perry 'Phenomenal ... Absolutely fascinating ... Incredible
stuff, really clever' Stephen Dixon, Sky News
On 28 June 1914, there were two almost simultaneous shots. In
Paris, the twelfth Tour de France was about to start, while in
Sarajevo the Austrian crown prince Franz Ferdinand was
assassinated. Professional cycle racing came to a halt, but the
first cycling heroes continued to race. The Belgian cycling author
Patrick Cornillie takes us through the wartime editions of the Tour
of Flanders, which were ridden on a velodrome just north of Ghent.
With humour, the book tells the stories of a champion who was a
spy, a one-legged Italian cyclist, some famous British and German
idols, and the perilous bike adventures of a well-known Belgian
author. With sadness, we learn about the fate of a French winner of
the Tour, killed in battle, the brave Black Devils, and the many
cyclist-soldiers from Australia, New Zealand and Canada who died at
the front. Cycling in the Great War is a collection of moving
tales, beautifully told and beautifully illustrated with original
historical pictures.
For an invention that has only been around for 200 years, the
simple bicycle has changed the world in many ways. It democratised
travel for the first time, allowing ordinary people to travel at
reasonable speed without need of a horse, to commute further afield
to work and to enjoy the benefits of the countryside. It has
challenged social conventions, granting women a new-found freedom,
and it has played an important role in wartime, whether used by
British paratroopers or in Vietnamese supply lines. Today, despite
the prevalence of the car, the bicycle is as important as ever,
with more cycles appear on city streets each year. Bikes come in
all shapes and sizes and the history of cycling is on of innovation
in design: from Macmillan's first pedal-driven cycle to the
eccentric Dursley Pedersen, and from the 1960s iconic Moulton to
the free-styling BMX, the humble cycle continues to surprise and
delight in equal measure. Illustrated in full colour with a wide
range of photographs, The History of Cycling in Fifty Bikes tells
the story of the bicycle through 50 iconic machines, starting with
the first primitive wooden two-wheelers through to carbon-fibre
super bikes and the designs of the future, celebrating sporting
achievements, technological advances and world records along with
way.

•SHORTLISTED FOR THE WILLIAM HILL SPORTS BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD
2022• •A SPORTS BOOK OF THE YEAR BY THE TIMES AND THE
GUARDIAN• The remarkable untold story of the mercurial cycling
prodigy Frank Vandenbroucke, written by William Hill award-winning
author Andy McGrath. They called him God. For his grace on a
bicycle, for his divine talent, for his heavenly looks. Frank
Vandenbroucke had it all, and in the late Nineties he raced with
dazzling speed and lived even faster. The Belgian won several of
cycling's most illustrious races, including Liège-Bastogne-Liège,
Paris-Nice and Ghent-Wevelgem. He was a mix of poise and panache
who enthralled a generation of cycling fans. Off the bike, he only
had one enemy - himself. Vandenbroucke dabbled in nocturnal party
sessions mixing sleeping pills and alcohol and regularly fell out
with team managers. By 1999 his team had suspended him and this
proved to be the start of a long, eventful fall from grace.
Depression, a drug ban, addiction, car crashes, divorce and
countless court appearances subsumed his life. He threatened his
wife with a gun. He tried to commit suicide twice. And when police
found performance-enhancing drugs at his house, Vandenbroucke said
they were for his dog. It seemed he had finally learned from his
mistakes. Then, on 12 October 2009, aged just 34, Vandenbroucke was
found dead in a hotel room in Senegal. Guided by exclusive
contributions from his family, friends and team-mates, William Hill
award-winning author Andy McGrath lays bare Vandenbroucke's
chaotic, complicated life and times. God is Dead is the remarkable
biography of this mercurial cycling prodigy.

Geoff Thomas's heroic battle to overcome leukaemia, and then take
on the toughest sporting challenge: to ride the Tour de France 'A
wonderfully compelling read' INDEPENDENT 'RIDING THROUGH THE STORM
details movingly and eloquently how Thomas fought cancer and then
took on the Tour de France to prove how alive he was ... All human
life graces Thomas' outstanding book' DAILY TELEGRAPH When Geoff
Thomas struggled to play a friendly game of tennis while on holiday
in Mallorca in May 2003, he thought little of it. Recently retired
as a footballer, he believed it was a sign of ageing and perhaps a
pulled muscle. But when the pain wouldn't go away, his wife Julie
persuaded him to go to a doctor. He was diagnosed as having
leukaemia. RIDING THROUGH THE STORM focuses on his journey round
the Tour de France in the summer of 2005, riding the 2,240-mile
course in the 21 days it takes Lance Armstrong and all the top
cyclists, despite never having cycled much before. Despite the odds
against him achieving it, he rode the course and raised nearly
£200,000 for charity. As he rides, he looks back on his successful
career as a footballer, and the bone-marrow transplant that saved
his life. This is a powerful, moving and inspirational story of
extraordinary achievement.
