"Sayarer is a precise and passionate writer . . . We need writers
who will go all the way for a story, and tell it with fire. Sayarer
is a marvellous example" HORATIO CLARE On the eve of its centenary
year and elections that will shape the coming generations, Julian
Emre Sayarer sets out to cycle across Türkiye, from the Aegean
coast to the Armenian border. Meeting Turkish farmers and workers,
Syrian refugees and Russians avoiding conscription, the journey
brings to life a living, breathing, cultural tapestry of the place
where Asia, Africa and Europe converge. The result is a love letter
to a country and its neighbours - one that offers a clear-eyed view
of Türkiye and its place in a changing world. Yet the route is
also marked by tragedy, as Sayarer cycles along a major fault line
just months before one of the most devastating earthquakes in the
region's modern history. Always engaged with the big historical and
political questions that inform so much of his writing, Sayarer
uses his bicycle and the roadside encounters it allows to bring
everything back to the human level. At the end of his journey we
are left with a deeper understanding of the country, as well as the
essential and universal nature of political power, both in Türkiye
and closer to home.
**SHORTLISTED FOR THE SUNDAY TIMES SPORTS BOOK AWARDS 2023** 'Full
of delightful anecdotes and interviews and fascinating historical
tales' Mail on Sunday A panoramic portrait of the wonderous vehicle
whose passenger is also its engine. A toy, a tool, a liberator, or
complete nuisance: the bicycle has been many things to many people
over the decades, yet it endures as the most popular form of
transport in the world. How has such a simple machine achieved so
much? Combining history, travelogue and memoir, Jody Rosen reshapes
our understanding of this ubiquitous vehicle from its invention in
1817 to its present-day renaissance as a 'green machine'. Readers
meet unforgettable characters: women's suffragists who steered
bikes to the barricades in the 1890s, a Bhutanese king who races
mountain bikes in the Himalayas, astronauts who ride a floating
bicycle in zero gravity. By examining the bicycle's past and
peering into its future, Two Wheels Good forms a joyful ode to an
engineering marvel of global importance. 'Funny, precise,
surprising' Adam Gopnik 'Love for two-wheeled transport runs
through every sentence' Economist 'Wry, rich, deeply researched'

Shifting Into High Gear charts the course of Kyle Bryant's
transformation as he journeys on a recumbent tricycle across the
United States in the throes of Friedreich's ataxia, a
life-shortening and disabling disease. Full of humor and
reflection, it's a heroic journey of a man driven to reframe the
language of disease through action and service. As you travel with
Kyle during two cross-country bike rides through the American West,
Texas, the Southern States, and finally to the shores of the
Atlantic Ocean, the grueling rides become a compelling backdrop for
a series of lessons and ruminations which embrace an alternative
worldview and provide practical solutions to everyday problems. A
thrilling adventure story, yes, Shifting Into High Gear is also
ultimately about helping readers reinterpret the conditions of
their lives and learning how positive thinking, purposeful
connection, and deliberate actions can help anyone reach beyond
their limits and live a bolder and bigger life no matter what the
circumstance. Deeply passionate and compassionate, Kyle uses his
amazing story to teach readers how to replace the handicapping
language of "disability" with the agency to build a thriving and
hopeful life. He bravely exposes the shadow-side of using disabling
language and asks us to commit to a collective goal of
understanding disease and its emotional impact and embrace the
disabled population as equal individuals. In telling his story,
Kyle's desire is that instead of viewing disease as a deficit, we
would see it as another state of being—simply as a life which
strikes out on a different path.
The Brave Athlete solves the 13 most common mental conundrums
athletes face in their everyday training and in races. You don’t
have one brain—you have three; your ancient Chimp brain that
keeps you alive, your modern Professor brain that navigates the
civilized world, and your Computer brain that accesses your
memories and runs your habits (good and bad). They fight for
control all the time and that’s when bad things happen; you get
crazy nervous before a race, you choke under pressure, you quit
when the going gets tough, you make dumb mistakes, you worry about
how you look. What if you could stop the thoughts and feelings you
don’t want? What if you could feel confident, suffer like a hero,
and handle any stress? You can. The Brave Athlete from Dr. Simon
Marshall and Lesley Paterson will help you take control of your
brain so you can train harder, race faster, and better enjoy your
sport. Dr. Marshall is a sport psychology expert who trains the
brains of elite professional athletes. Paterson is a three-time
world champion triathlete and coach. Together, they offer this
innovative, brain training guide that is the first to draw from
both clinical science and real-world experience with athletes. That
means you won’t find outdated “positive self-talk” or
visualization gimmicks here. No, the set of cutting-edge mental
skills revealed in The Brave Athlete actually work because they
challenge the source of the thoughts and feelings you don’t want.
The Brave Athlete is packed with practical, evidence-based
solutions to the most common mental challenges athletes face. Which
of these sound like you? · Why do I have thoughts and feelings I
don’t want? · I wish I felt more like an athlete. · I don’t
think I can. · I don’t achieve my goals. · Other athletes seem
tougher, happier, and more badass than me. · I feel fat. · I
don’t cope well with injury. · People are worried about how much
I exercise. · I don’t like leaving my comfort zone. · When the
going gets tough, the tough leave me behind. · I need to harden
the f*ck up. · I keep screwing up. · I don’t handle pressure
well. With The Brave Athlete: Calm the F*ck Down and Rise to the
Occasion, you can solve these problems to become mentally strong
and make your brain your most powerful asset.
Italy, 1943\. Although allied with Hitler, there were those who
refused to accept the fascist policies of racial discrimination and
deportation. Among them was Gino Bartali. A champion cyclist, he
won the Giro d'Italia (Tour of Italy) three times and the Tour de
France twice. But these weren't his only achievements. Deeply
religious, Bartali never spoke about what he did during those dark
years, when he agreed to work with the Resistance and pass messages
from one end of the country to the other. Despite the dangers,
Bartali used his training as a pretext to criss-cross Italy, hiding
documents in the handlebars and saddle of his bicycle, all the
while hoping that each time he was searched they wouldn't think to
disassemble his machine. As a result of his bravery, 800 Jews
including numerous children were saved from deportation. He died in
Florence in 2000 and was recognised as one of the 'Righteous Among
the Nations' in 2013. In this book, Alberto Toscano shares the
incredible story of this great sportsman and recalls the dramatic
moments in Italy and Europe in the twentieth century.

In Summer, 1981, a young Neville Peat set out from Cape Reinga on
his new 10-speed bike Blue, aiming to cycle through the small towns
of New Zealand from north to south, all the way to Stewart Island.
The week before Easter, he reached his destination. He wrote a book
about it, Detours: A Journey through Small-Town New Zealand, which
sold many copies and was broadcast on the radio. Many times in the
intervening years, usually on anniversaries of the journey, he
wished to try a repeat journey, but life held other challenges.
Now, as a leading author, and in the age of the personal computer
and cell phone a very different world he has revisited many of the
towns and regions, not on a bicycle, but by car. In Detours A
Generation On, an opening essay reflects once again on how
small-town New Zealand is doing, followed up by a reprint of the
80's classic account.

New from award-winning author Matt Rendell, an examination of the
phenomenal success of Alejandro Valverde and the moral decay at the
heart of Spanish cycling. 'A study of a dominant force, a true
gentleman racer despite his shadowy past' Dan Martin Alejandro
Valverde - the 'Green Bullet' - was an international symbol of
Spanish cycling for a quarter of a century before his retirement in
2022. Hard-working and supremely talented, he won the Vuelta a
España and stood on the podium of the Giro d'Italia and the Tour
de France. World champion in 2018, he was also the world's
number-one-ranked rider four times. A man of indisputable charisma,
he was also a convicted doping cheat. When the Spanish police
investigation, Operación Puerto, uncovered a vast international
blood doping ring, Valverde denied all involvement. The revelations
unearthed by Operación Puerto threatened to force cycling off the
road. Valverde's long career was a high wire walk between the venal
interests that surround elite sport in Spain. In a nation beset by
corruption, political incompetence and social division, Valverde's
talent aided the public image of unscrupulous political and
economic institutions. Even today, Valverde maintains his
reticence. The Green Bullet breaks the silence.

ROAD.CC 'This is a truly beautiful book' CHRIS SIDWELLS, author of
Wild Cycling and Really Wild Cycling 'Impeccable design and
compulsive content . . . phenomenal . . . glorious photography,
often colourfully spread across two wide-format pages, each
numbered and graded ride is accompanied by a map, a profile that
usually resembles the teeth of a tyrannosaurus, a summary of the
key climbs, the total distance covered and the total vertical
distance achieved on completion' thewashingmachinepost In this
inspirational book, filled with amazing photographs, Simon has
showcased Britain's beautiful landscape in the same way that
Michael Blann and others have done for the mountains of continental
Europe. The aim is always to make people want to get out and ride
Britain's roads, to entice people to put themselves in the pictures
on every page and ride through the stunning scenery. The book is a
seamless blend of beautiful photographs and information on the
rides, including gradient diagrams and maps. This is Simon Warren
taking his well-deserved reputation as the King of Climbs and
displaying it in a bold new format, from pocket guide to
cinemascope. The book contains 40 inspirational rides split across
eight chapters covering the whole of mainland Britain. From
Dartmoor through Wales, the Peak District and the Pennines all the
way via the Lakes to the Highlands of Scotland. From Surrey and
Kent to Lincolnshire and Northumberland, if there are hills Simon
has found them and plotted a route to share his knowledge. Each
ride includes a profile of the route, a detailed map and breakdown
of the key climbs, also a description of what to expect along the
way, all illustrated by inspirational photography. The eight
chapters cover the South-west, the South-east, the Midlands,
Yorkshire, the North-east, Scotland, the North-west and Wales, so,
no matter where you live, there will be something close to your
doorstep. There is even a route in Norfolk!
