"Strong" often means physical strength and a powerful presence ... but according to the Bible, being a mighty man means learning to listen, speak up, and do the right thing even when it's hard. In Devotions to Make You Stronger, ninety days of quick, short, easy-to-read and boy-friendly devotions help young guys 8 and up discover the strong person God made them to be inside and out, and how they can grow up to be powerful in the ways that count no matter their physical appearance. David was part of a group of mighty men. Samson could lift heavy doors and defeat entire armies with a jawbone. Joshua led an entire nation in battles against the giants and warriors of Canaan and won. But those impressive feats aren't what actually made them "strong." In fact, those things aren't even what made them heroes. What really made them strong and able to take on anything was the stuff happening inside their hearts. The good news? You can be just as strong and amazing by following their good habits-and avoiding their mistakes. Each of the ninety devotions in this book take a few minutes to read (some are even funny!) and explore the entire Bible to show you the secrets to building your brain muscles and making your body healthier so you are ready for any challenge. Plus, every devotion shows exactly how the Bible applies to you, so you can confidently go out and do powerful things no matter what you face. The story of Margaret and her friend the Pope continues with Book 3 in The Pope's Cat series. This adventure has Margaret experiencing the prayers, penitence, liturgy, and excitement of Holy Week in the Vatican and Rome-from the joy of Palm Sunday in St. Peter's Square, to foot-washing in a Roman prison, the solemnity of Good Friday, and the expectation of Easter. She learns about Jesus and the meaning of his Passion, visits important new places such as The Sistine Chapel, where she seems to pray beside the Pope, and the Roman Colosseum, where she learns that many early Christians were martyrs for their faith. Margaret's friends, the Swiss Guards, are watching over her, and she manages to eat (she still loves to eat!) some interesting foods, even though it's Holy Week. Oh yes, and she sleeps a lot.
The surprising ways in which a religious upbringing shapes the academic lives of teens It's widely acknowledged that American parents from different class backgrounds take different approaches to raising their children. Upper and middle-class parents invest considerable time facilitating their children's activities, while working class and poor families take a more hands-off approach. These different strategies influence how children approach school. But missing from the discussion is the fact that millions of parents on both sides of the class divide are raising their children to listen to God. What impact does a religious upbringing have on their academic trajectories? Drawing on 10 years of survey data with over 3,000 teenagers and over 200 interviews, God, Grades, and Graduation offers a revealing and at times surprising account of how teenagers' religious upbringing influences their educational pathways from high school to college. Dr. Ilana M. Horwitz estimates that approximately one out of every four students in American schools are raised with religious restraint. These students orient their life around God so deeply that it alters how they see themselves and how they behave, inside and outside of church. This book takes us inside the lives of these teenagers to discover why they achieve higher grades than their peers, why they are more likely to graduate from college, and why boys from lower middle-class families particularly benefit from religious restraint. But readers also learn how for middle-upper class kids-and for girls especially-religious restraint recalibrates their academic ambitions after graduation, leading them to question the value of attending a selective college despite their stellar grades in high school. By illuminating the far-reaching effects of the childrearing logic of religious restraint, God, Grades and Graduation offers a compelling new narrative about the role of religion in academic outcomes and educational inequality.

Today this young boy from the inner-city is one of the world s greatest pediatric neurosurgeons. Religious Education and the Public Sphere reveals, through an analysis of theory and practice, that religious education is resting on historic and persistent assumptions about both religion and education. Drawing on work from Arendt and Weil, new ideas emerge regarding religious education's constituent elements: education and religion. It offers a new and timely proposal for religious education and argues for a broader understanding of religion, bringing a fresh contribution to current discussions regarding the relationship between religion and education in the public sphere. Some practical considerations emerging from theory developing through the earlier parts of the book are presented in the final section, including the teacher's role and what should guide religious education curriculum. At a time when there is raised interest in the role of religion in the public sphere internationally, this book aims to contribute something new, both theoretically and practically, to discussions regarding the role of religion in education is and relevant to educational contexts worldwide. This book will be vital reading for academics and researchers in the fields of religion and religious studies, education, philosophy of education and religious education, and will also be of great interest to teachers and policy makers working in the field of religious education in the public sphere.
