Nanomagnetism, Volume 1 - Ultrathin Films, Multilayers and Nanostructures (Hardcover): D L L Mills, J.A.C. Bland Nanomagnetism, Volume 1 - Ultrathin Films, Multilayers and Nanostructures (Hardcover)
D L L Mills, J.A.C. Bland
R5,602 Discovery Miles 56 020 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Nanoscience is of central importance in the physical and biological sciences and is now pervasive in technology. However nanomagnetism has a special role to play as magnetic properties depend uniquely on both dimensionality and lengthscales. Nanomagnetism is already central to data storage, sensor and device technologies but is increasingly being used in the life sciences and medicine. This volume aims to introduce scientists, computer scientists, engineers and technologists from diverse fields to this fascinating and technologically important new branch of nanoscience. The volume should appeal to both the interested general reader but also to the researcher wishing to obtain an overview of this fast moving field.
The contributions come from acknowledged leaders in the field who each give authoritative accounts of key fundamental aspects of nanomagnetism to which they have themselves made a major contribution. After a brief introduction by the editors, Wu first surveys the fundamental properties of magnetic nanostructures. The interlayer exchange interactions within magnetic multilayer structures is next discussed by Stiles. Camley then discusses the static, dynamic and thermal properties of magnetic multilayers and nanostructures, followed by an account of the phenomenon of exchange anisotropy by Berkowitz and Kodama. This latter phenomenon is widely in current read head devices for example. The transport properties of nanostructures also are spectacular, and again underpin computer technology, as we see from the discussion of giant magnetoresistance (GMR) and tunnelling magnetoresistance (TMR) presented by Fert and his colleagues. Beyond GMR and TMR we look to the field of spintronics where new electronic devices are envisioned and for which quantum
computing may depend as discussed in the chapter by Flatte and Jonker.
The volume concludes with discussion of the recently discovered phenomenon of current induced switching of magnetization by Edwards and Mathon.
* Subject is in the forefront of nanoscience
* All Section authors are leading figures in this key field
* Presentations are accessible to non specialists, with focus on underlying fundamentals

Something Out of Nothing - Marie Curie and Radium (Paperback): Carla Killough McClafferty Something Out of Nothing - Marie Curie and Radium (Paperback)
Carla Killough McClafferty
R469 R388 Discovery Miles 3 880 Save R81 (17%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Marie Curie's story has fascinated and inspired young readers
decades. The poor Polish girl who worked eight years to be able
to afford to attend the Sorbonne in Paris became one of the
most important scientists of her day, winning not one but two
Nobel Prizes. Her life is a fascinating one, filled with hard work,
humanitarianism, and tragedy. Her work with her husband,
Pierre - the study of radioactivity and the discovery of the
elements radium and polonium - changed science forever. But
she is less well known for her selfless efforts during World War
to establish mobile X-ray units so that wounded French soldiers
could get better care faster. When she stood to profit greatly
from her scientific work, she chose not to, making her methods
and findings known and available to all of science. As a result,
this famous woman spent most of her life in need of money,
often to buy the very elements she discovered.
Marie Curie's life and work are given a fresh telling, one that
also explores the larger picture of the effects of radium in world
culture, and its exploitation and sad misuse.

Teaching Physics (Hardcover, 2003 ed.): L. Viennot Teaching Physics (Hardcover, 2003 ed.)
L. Viennot
R3,039 Discovery Miles 30 390 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book seeks to narrow the current gap between educational research and classroom practice in the teaching of physics. It makes a detailed analysis of research findings derived from experiments involving pupils, students and teachers in the field. Clear guidelines are laid down for the development and evaluation of sequences, drawing attention to "critical details" of the practice of teaching that may spell success or failure for the project. It is intended for researchers in science teaching, teacher trainers and teachers of physics.

Many problems in classical mechanics can now be readily solved using computers. This text integrates Maple, a general-purpose symbolic computation program, into the traditional sophomore- or junior-level mechanics course. Intended primarily as a supplement to a standard text, it discusses all the topics usually covered in the course and shows how to solve problems using Maple and how to display solutions graphically to gain further insight. The text is self-contained and can also be used for self-study or as the primary text in a mechanics course.

Now it's easy to locate the materials you need to implement the new NCTM math standards. Organized by such math topics as problem solving, estimation, number sense and numeration, and geometry and spatial relationships, this book shows users where to find manipulatives and materials, such as attribute blocks, pattern blocks, clocks, scales, multilink cubes and prisms, calculators, and sorting toys. It also lists specialized math books, computer software, and a host of other learning materials (e.g., activity cards, puzzles, posters, games, reproducibles). The author briefly describes each product, cites grade level when given, and explains possible applications. Products of exceptional quality and value are highlighted, and the addresses of publishers and suppliers are given. A real time-saver! Grades K-4.

R2,896 Discovery Miles 28 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Physics practical classes form an important part of many scientific and technical courses in higher education. In addition to the older standard experiments, such practicals now generally include a few computer-controlled experiments developed in association with the research groups active in the particular university or college. Since there is relatively little exchange of information between the teaching staff of different institutes, the personal computer, despite its ubiquity, is underexploited in this role as a teaching aid. The present book provides a detailed description of a number of computer-controlled experiments suitable for practical classes. Both the relevant physics and the computational techniques are presented in a form that enables the readers to construct and/or perform the experiment themselves.
