During his career as one of America's most sought-after
illustrators, Andrew Loomis (1889-1959) taught at the American
Academy of Art in Chicago, and in 1939 he codified his lessons in
his first manual, "Fun with a Pencil." Four years later it had
already been through six printings, and he followed up over the
next two decades with a series of even more successful how-to books
that remain the gold standard for artists to this day.
"Creative Illustration" is considered Loomis's magnum opus, which
was aimed primarily at the professional-level illustrator. Divided
into seven sections: Line, Tone, Color, Telling the Story, Creating
Ideas, Fields of Illustration, and Experimenting and Studies, this
book is filled with instructions, tips, insider experiences, and
incredible illustrations.
Each book in the 'Essential Guide to Drawing' series provides an
accessible introduction to the subject, backed up by clear
examples.
Arthur L. Guptill's classic Rendering in Pen and Ink has long been

subject of ink drawing. This is a book designed to delight and

artist to the amateur and hobbyist. It is of particular interest to
architects, interior designers, landscape architects, industrial

of materials and tools of rendering; handling the pen and building
tones; value studies; kinds of outline and their uses; drawing
objects in light and shade; handling groups of objects; basic
principles of composition; using photographs, study of the work of
well-known artists; on-the-spot sketching; representing trees and
other landscape features; drawing architectural details; methods of
architectural rendering; examination of outstanding examples of
architectural rendering; solving perspective and other rendering
problems; handling interiors and their accessories; and finally,
special methods of working with pen including its use in
combination with other media. The book is profusely illustrated
with over 300 drawings that include the work of famous illustrators
and renderers of architectural subjects such as Rockwell Kent,

Griggs, Samuel V. Chamberlain, Louis C. Rosenberg, John Floyd

From the international bestselling illustrator and Queen of
Colouring Johanna Basford comes a lavishly illustrated fable to
colour and bring to life - a girl named Ivy stumbles upon a secret
door leading to the magical world of Enchantia... 'The colourists
have a queen, and her name is Johanna Basford' -- New York Magazine
'Consider trading in your yoga mat for a set of markers and peruse
the gorgeous gardens of Basford's imagination' -- The Huffington
Post
*************************************************************************************************
A charming story that interacts playfully with beautiful,
colourable artwork in ink evangelist Johanna Basford's signature
style, Ivy and the Inky Butterfly is a one-of-a-kind adventure for
the whole family and readers of all ages to customise, colour and
cherish. For Ivy and the Inky Butterfly Johanna has picked a crisp
ivory paper that accentuates and compliments your chosen colour
palette. The smooth, untextured pages allows for beautiful blending
or gradient techniques with coloured pencils, or are perfect for
pens, allowing the nib to glide evenly over the surface without
feathering.
At first glance, contemporary popular culture, filled with bleak
images of the future, seems to have given up on the possibility of
positive collective change. Below the surface, however, alternative
culture is rife with artist-led projects, activist movements, and
subcultural communities of interest that seek to spark the
collective imagination and to encourage hunger for alternatives.
More playfully self-conscious than past utopian movements, today's
are often whimsical or ironic, but are still entirely earnest.
Artists invite us to re-author city maps, or archive individual
ideas for the future, while maker collectives urge us to rethink
our relationship to consumer goods. All seem to have grown out of a
similar do-it-yourself ethos and alternative culture. One of the
central conflicts informing these case studies is that while it
remains immensely difficult to envision anything outside of the
current system of consumer capitalism, there is nevertheless a
powerful desire to take it apart in piecemeal ways. We see the
longing for new social and political narratives, new forms of
communion and sociability, and new imaginings of the possible,
longings that are currently unmet by mainstream culture, but that
are taking expression in myriad ways at the local level. Taken as a
whole, this collection examines what our grand ideals and playful
daydreams tell us about ourselves.

This is a hands-on guide to learning to draw in perspective. It is
partly about learning to draw a set of straight lines that meet at
a point. And it's partly about learning to look at what is around
you, and spot where those invisible straight lines might be
located. It's a book for anyone who wants to draw or paint-in any
genre and in any medium. And it's not weighed down with theory -
although everything you will need to know is explained. Most of
all, it gives you exercises to play with. You can put your
observational skills to the test with the "image quiz"
features-where you take a pen and draw in all the vanishing points
onto the book itself. Or use the special "perspective chambers" to
draw objects onto an existing scene, keeping it all in the right
perspective: think of it as a kind of 3D doodling. By the time you
get to the end of the book, you will understand how perspective
works and be able to apply it intuitively without a ruler or
drafting table. The whole concept will feel like a sixth sense. And
you can get on with being creative. There is also a 30-page
workbook to put your skills to the test!

Welcome to the wonderful world of painting with gouache, with the
creative guidance of popular artist and illustrator Zoe Ingram. In
this comprehensive beginner's guide, Zoe shares everything she
possibly can about getting started with gouache painting. Why
gouache? Because this exciting paint medium creates opaque effects
making it more vibrant and graphic than traditional watercolours,
meaning you can layer it, paint on dark backgrounds and much more.
Gouache is one of the easiest of paint mediums to use. It's very
forgiving and fun to use and is also versatile. Gouache paint can
mimic watercolour and can give the opacity of oil paint if used
with less water. You can use it to paint large, smooth, flat blocks
of background colour and the finest lines and details. Gouache
paint also dries quickly too, which is a big bonus! Starting at the
very start, Zoe takes you through the basics and explains what
tools and materials you'll need, then explores a wide range of
techniques and finally, there are a host of fun and vibrant
step-by-step projects that you can follow along with or use as a
springboard for your own ideas. Zoe Ingram's distinctive art makes
this book a visual treat, as she shows you how she paints a variety
of subjects, from birds and bugs, to flowers and foliage, to
abstract collages, hand lettering and patterns. Along the way
you'll learn about colour theory, colour mixing, sketching, washes,
mark making, line work, overlaying, working on dark backgrounds,
how to get crisp edges, how to add details, different approaches to
collage and even how to digitise your work so that you can create
repeat patterns and custom prints. In the projects section you can
follow along step-by-step as Zoe paints a very handsome pheasant, a
funky beetle pattern, a trendy houseplant, colourful caterpillars,
bright butterflies, jumbled geometric patterns, a striking owl,
pretty florals, creative lettering, a curious cat and a free-flow
abstract floral piece - after which there will be no stopping you!
Beautifully illustrated, expertly explained and a riot of colour,
this book will kickstart your love affair with gouache, so all
that's left is deciding how to pronounce it...
"gooash"..."gwash"..."goo-uhsh"?!
