This is the first fully annotated edition of Ben Jonson's "The
Magnetic Lady," written in 1632. The introduction places the play
in the context of Jonson's later dramatic and poetic works and
discusses the political context of the Caroline court. A
performance history of the play and fresh material relating to its
17th-century reception are also provided. This new edition by Peter
Happè reappraises Jonson's much-neglected play and argues for its
recognition as a work of real distinction.
Volpone is part of the New Mermaid series of modern spelling, fully-annotated editions of English plays. Each volume includes a critical introduction, biography of the author, discussions of dates and sources, textual details, a bibliography and information about the staging of the play.
This unique volume includes eight early dramas that mirror American literary, social, and cultural history: Royall Tylers The Contrast (1789); William Dunlap's Andre (1798); James Nelson Barker's The Indian Princess (1808); Robert Montgomery Bird's The Gladiator (1831); William Henry Smith's The Drunkard (1844); Anna Cora Mowatt's Fashion (1845); George Aiken's Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852); and Dion Boucicault's The Octoroon (1859).
Given the wealth of formal debate contained in this tragedy, Troilus and Cressida was probably written in 1602 for a performance at one of the Inns of the Court. Shakespeare's treatment of the age-old tale of love and betrayal is based on many sources, from Homer and Ovid to Chaucer and Shakespeare's near contemporary Robert Greene. In the introduction the various problems connected with the play, its performance, and publication, are considered succinctly; its multiple sources are discussed in detail, together with its peculiar stage history and its renewed popularity in recent years.
Following the successful format of this series, this edition of one of the great plays of the French literary canon includes full annotation and an extended introduction aimed at the needs of students from A-level upwards. This edition is intended for A-level and undergraduate students of French
