China as the Workshop of the World - An Analysis at the National and Industrial Level of China in the International Division of... China as the Workshop of the World - An Analysis at the National and Industrial Level of China in the International Division of Labor (Hardcover)
Yuning Gao
R4,669 Discovery Miles 46 690 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Is China becoming the "workshop of the world" in the same way as Britain and the United States once were; or is China ? as some multinational companies believe ? simply a processing segment in global production networks? This book examines China's role in the international division of labor: it analyzes the scale and scope of China's manufacture; the type and relative sophistication of its exports in the world market; and its position in the global value chain. It shows that China monopolizes industrial production by being the processing center of world.

Based on extensive original research, this book examines the structure of production in global manufacturing industries, applying both qualitative and quantitative methods. It analyzes each segment of the value chain, exploring in depth several specific industrial sectors. It concludes that China has become deeply integrated into global manufacturing industry; that China's position in the value chain is still quite low, with relatively low research and development (R&D) and other similar high-value activities; but that, in some sectors, China is catching up rapidly, especially in newly emerging sectors.

Regional and Multilateral Trade in Developing Countries (Hardcover, New): Shahid Ahmed, Shahid Ashraf Regional and Multilateral Trade in Developing Countries (Hardcover, New)
Shahid Ahmed, Shahid Ashraf
R4,400 Discovery Miles 44 000 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book provides fresh insights into the theory and policy of regional and multilateral trade from the perspective of developing countries. With the collapse of talks at the WTO Doha round, regionalism has proliferated in the form of Regional Trade Agreements (RTAs). This in turn has raised a number of critical issues in global trade policy debate. Given the implication of RTAs and WTO negotiations on economic development, the book emphasises that it is essential to examine the macro and micro effects of international trade flows on welfare, revenue, poverty and environment, particularly in the light of diversities, heterogeneities and limited financial capacity of developing countries. It discusses various issues of trade, investment, poverty, gender and legal dimensions in the regional and multilateral framework and is a useful guide to formulation of trade and economic policies for the benefit of developing countries.

The book will be of primary interest to those in economics, commerce and management, and will be a useful reference for alternative research in this area.

The Diamond Ring - Business, Politics, and Precious Stones in South Africa, 1867-1947 (Hardcover, New): Colin Newbury The Diamond Ring - Business, Politics, and Precious Stones in South Africa, 1867-1947 (Hardcover, New)
Colin Newbury
R6,175 R5,796 Discovery Miles 57 960 Save R379 (6%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This is a history of the production and marketing of diamonds from the period of the `rush' to Kimberley and the rise of De Beers to the formation of the Central Selling Organization by South African producers and London and South African merchants. Based on a wide variety of original sources from public and mining company archives, it is both a business and a political study of a South African monopoly which became an international cartel. The Diamond Ring departs from previous histories by emphasizing the key role of the merchants in financing and organizing the trade in opposition to the South African state, as each struggled to gain control of production in the 1920s and 1930s. It explains the reasons for state interest in diamond production and the eventual co-operation of politicians, officials, and diamond magnates in regulating supply and sales. It includes much new material on the ways in which the British government strengthened the hand of the Diamond Syndicate and the Diamond Corporation to maintain and extend central selling beyond South Africa to other states - Zaire, Angola, Ghana, and Sierra Leone - before independence, as the `Ring' expanded into a world-wide brokerage based in London.

Trade and Contemporary Society along the Silk Road - An ethno-history of Ladakh (Paperback): Jacqueline H. Fewkes Trade and Contemporary Society along the Silk Road - An ethno-history of Ladakh (Paperback)
Jacqueline H. Fewkes
R1,442 Discovery Miles 14 420 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book provides an ethno-historical study of the trade system in Ladakh (India), a busy entrepot for Silk Route trade between Central and South Asia. Previously a part of global networks, Ladakh became an isolated border area as national boundaries were defined and enforced in the mid-20th century. As trade with Central Asia ended, social life in Ladakh was irrevocably altered. The author's research combines anthropological, historical, and archaeological methods of investigation, using data from primary documents, ethnographic interviews and participation-observation fieldwork. The result is a cultural history of South and Central Asia, detailing the social lives of historical Ladakhi traders and identifying their community as a cosmopolitan social group. The relationship between the historical narratives and the modern ethnographic context illustrates how social issues in modern communities are related to those of the past. It is demonstrated that this relationship depends on both memories, narratives about the past constructed within present social contexts, and legacies, ways in which the past continues to shape present social interactions. This book will be of particular interest to anthropologists, historians and specialists in South and Central Asian studies, as well as those interested in historical archaeology, science, sociology, political science and economics.

The WTO - Crisis and the Governance of Global Trade (Hardcover): Rorden Wilkinson The WTO - Crisis and the Governance of Global Trade (Hardcover)
Rorden Wilkinson
R3,693 Discovery Miles 36 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores the reasons for the collapse of World Trade Organization (WTO) meetings (as in Seattle in 1999 and Cancun in 2003) and the political conflicts that arose therein. Drawing from a body of literature concerned with how and why institutions emerge and change, and an analysis of the development of multilateral trade regulation that stretches from the creation of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) in 1947 to the WTO's Hong Kong ministerial meeting in December 2005, the book argues that the political conflicts played out during ministerial meetings are the inevitable product of the way the institution was created and has since developed. It argues that the specific purposes for which multilateral trade regulation was created built into the institution an asymmetry of economic opportunity that has been extended and amplified through time. This asymmetry has come to shape the interaction of member states in such a way that contestation over the shape and direction of the trade agenda - and on occasion the collapse of a ministerial meeting - are inevitable consequences. However, the rather than significantly disrupting the development of the multilateral trade regulation, the book explains why the collapse of ministerial meetings may actually have helped take it forward.

The Interaction between World Trade Organisation (WTO) Law and External International Law - The Constrained Openness of WTO Law... The Interaction between World Trade Organisation (WTO) Law and External International Law - The Constrained Openness of WTO Law (A Prologue to a Theory) (Hardcover)
Ronnie R.F. Yearwood
R4,670 Discovery Miles 46 700 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

International legal scholarship is concerned with the fragmentation of international law into specialised legal systems such as trade, environment and human rights. Fragmentation raises questions about the inter-systemic interaction between the various specialised systems of international law. This study conceptually focuses on the interaction between World Trade Organisation (WTO) law and external international law. It introduces a legal theory of WTO law, constrained openness, as a way to understand that interaction. The idea is that WTO law, from its own internal point of view, constructs its own law. The effect is that external international law is not incorporated into WTO law wholesale, but is (re)constructed as WTO law. It follows that legal systems do not directly communicate with each other. Therefore, to influence WTO law, an indirect strategic approach is required, which recognises the functional nature of the differentiated systems of the fragmented international legal system.

U.S. Trade Issues - A Reference Handbook (Hardcover): Alfred E. Eckes Jr U.S. Trade Issues - A Reference Handbook (Hardcover)
Alfred E. Eckes Jr
R2,295 Discovery Miles 22 950 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

An expert analysis of key issues, individuals, and developments in U.S. trade policy from national, regional, and global perspectives. What is the proper balance between free trade and protecting the American economy? U.S. Trade Issues: A Reference Handbook is a timely exploration of this vital and politically sensitive question, one that emerged as a crucial issue in the 2008 presidential election. Written by a former chairman of the U.S. International Trade Commission, it provides an authoritative, accessible, and unbiased review of the defining events, principal players, and key controversies in U.S. trade policy. U.S. Trade Issues describes American trade policies from the days of the republic to the present, focusing most intently on the post-World War II era. It explores a number of current issues, including the Doha Round of Multilateral Negotiations, NAFTA, and the president's trade authority. In addition, the handbook looks at American trade policy in the context of an increasingly globalized world economy.

The United States and the Pacific Islands (Hardcover): John C. Dorrance The United States and the Pacific Islands (Hardcover)
John C. Dorrance
R3,163 Discovery Miles 31 630 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Although the Pacific islands were front-page news during the 1941-1945 Pacific War, today they are seldom in the American consciousness--except as a perception of Micheneresque tropical paradises. But the islands--10,000 strong and scattered over nearly one-fifth of the earth's surface--still straddle or remain close to the sea and air lanes that link the United States with Australia and Asia, and carry nearly one-half of U.S. foreign trade. New political interests also exist with the recent emergence of a new panoply of independent Pacific island states, extension of U.S. sovereignty to other Pacific islands, and new defense responsibilities in several states linked to the United States by free association. John C. Dorrance offers an exceptionally authoritative and comprehensive assessment of U.S. interests in and policy toward a poorly understood region. The islands, highly aid dependent and uniquely vulnerable to external influences, have experienced insurrections, military coups, secessionist rebellion, political assassinations, Soviet in-roads, and even Libyan mischief-making. Ethnic conflict and developmental problems also threaten democratic institutions and the region's stability. Dorrance thoroughly explores the regional policy environment and the issues that face the United States. His book is of lasting value to scholars and especially to policy-makers and practitioners.

China's Private Army - Protecting the New Silk Road (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Alessandro Arduino China's Private Army - Protecting the New Silk Road (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Alessandro Arduino
R1,918 Discovery Miles 19 180 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book illustrates the role that Private Security Companies (PSC) with 'Chinese characteristics' play in protecting people and property associated with the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The revival of the ancient Silk Road economic "belt," combined with the 21st Century sea lanes of communication known as the "road," is intended to enhance global connectivity and increase commercial activity. However, the socio-political risks associated with Chinese outbound direct investments are often overlooked. Terrorism, separatism, kidnapping and other risks are mostly new to Chinese companies, some of which are operating abroad for the first time. Economic globalization and the transnational exploitation of natural resources have increased the need for Chinese-owned PSCs in spite of the disdain for the profession of "a lance for hire." Due to peculiar geo-strategic and geo-economic features, the "belt" from Central Asia to Pakistan and the "road" from the Somali coast to the Strait of Malacca are characterized by a high level of insecurity. This book's focus on how the state's monopoly of force privatization can play a significant role in protecting the New Silk Road will be of interest to policymakers, journalists, and academics.

China, Oil and Global Politics (Hardcover): Philip Andrews-Speed, Roland Dannreuther China, Oil and Global Politics (Hardcover)
Philip Andrews-Speed, Roland Dannreuther
R4,668 Discovery Miles 46 680 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

China's rapid economic growth has led to a huge increase in its domestic energy needs. This book provides a critical overview of how China's growing need for oil imports is shaping its international economic and diplomatic strategy and how this affects global political relations and behaviour.

Part One is focused on the domestic drivers of energy policy: it provides a systematic account of recent trends in China's energy sector and assesses the context and processes of energy policy making, and concludes by showing how and why China's oil industry has spread across the world in the last fifteen years. Part Two analyses the political and foreign policy implications of this energy-driven expansion and the challenges this potentially poses for China's integration into the international system. It examines a number of factors linked to this integration in the energy field, including the unpredictabilities of internal policymaking; China's determination to promote its own critical national interests, and the general ambition of the Chinese leadership to integrate with the international system on its own terms and at its own speed.

The highly topical book draws together the various dimensions of China's international energy strategy, and provides insights into the impact of this on China's growing international presence in various parts of the world.

Recognition and Regulation of Safeguard Measures Under GATT/WTO (Hardcover): Sheela Rai Recognition and Regulation of Safeguard Measures Under GATT/WTO (Hardcover)
Sheela Rai
R4,818 Discovery Miles 48 180 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book discusses the law of safeguard measures as laid down in the WTO agreements and cases decided by the Panel and the Appellate Body. It sets out a comprehensive treatment of safeguard measures covering the history and evolution of the law, as well as the procedural requirements and the application of safeguard measures. In addition to measures under Article XIX and the Safeguards Agreement, the book includes coverage of safeguard measures for agricultural products, Special Safeguard Measures for developing countries, safeguard measures for textiles and proposed safeguard measures under General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) as well as special safeguard clauses against China. Recognition and Regulation of Safeguard Measures Under GATT/WTO considers safeguards from a developing country's perspective drawing on Joseph E. Stiglitz's argument that developing countries require these trade remedy measures to protect their domestic industries and ensure their development. Sheela Rai considers this view and goes on to examine how beneficial the provisions relating to safeguard measures and their interpretation given by the Panel and Appellate Body have been for developing countries.

Apec And The Rise Of China (Hardcover): John Wong, Lok Sang Ho Apec And The Rise Of China (Hardcover)
John Wong, Lok Sang Ho
R2,458 Discovery Miles 24 580 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Intra-regional trade has been rising rapidly, especially after China's accession to the WTO in 2001. China's economy is expanding rapidly, and has already passed Japan in 2010 to become the world's second largest economy. It is clearly producing a huge impact on the world economy, and particularly on ASEAN countries. This is the appropriate time to take stock: what has APEC achieved so far? How is China's rapid growth shaping the course of economic integration and cooperation in the region? What is the future of APEC? This book is based on papers presented by scholars with expertise in the Asia Pacific region at a conference on "APEC at 20 and the Rise of China" organized by the APEC Centre of Lingnan University on 26 27 February 2010, and includes additional invited papers.

National Solutions to Trans-Border Problems? - The Governance of Security and Risk in a Post-NAFTA North America (Hardcover,... National Solutions to Trans-Border Problems? - The Governance of Security and Risk in a Post-NAFTA North America (Hardcover, New Ed)
Isidro Morales
R1,286 Discovery Miles 12 860 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

'Triggered by the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), Canada, the United States and Mexico redefined their public policies to facilitate the regionalization of transactions. However, this volume addresses the institutional gaps that still remain focusing mainly on the cross-border governance of security aspects. It gathers interdisciplinary contributions of specialists working on continental issues within Canada, the United States and Mexico and highlights the transnational dimension of certain issues still managed under national-framed policies. Furthermore, it explores the possibilities and constraints for moving public policy into new cross-border governance strategies. Divided in three parts, the first part assesses what is at stake in cross-border governance issues and whether the integrative trend in the region will be maintained or stalled in the years to come. The second part explores the growing scope of security problems interconnected with borders, migration, energy and drug trafficking across the region. It highlights how Mexico and Canada are responding or adapting their policy choices to a continental security approach framed by the US after the terrorist attacks of September 11, and to the major concerns of the Obama administration. The third part focuses on the governance of territorial borders and bilateral affairs, i.e. Mexico-US and Canada-Mexico relations.

Europe, Canada and the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (Hardcover): Kurt Hubner Europe, Canada and the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (Hardcover)
Kurt Hubner
R4,829 Discovery Miles 48 290 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Great Recession and the turn towards all forms of protectionism stress the relevance of international trade policy. With the global economy undergoing deep structural changes, the negotiations between Canada and the EU on a Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) present a real-time experiment that sheds light on the direction that the relationships between two economic units of the G8 will take. For Canada, an agreement with the EU would end its current dependency on the US; for the EU, an agreement with Canada would be a first with a G8-economy and indicate how its new trade strategy 'Global Europe' will look like. This book is the first to simultaneously analyze the undercurrents of this project and introduce the main topics at hand. CETA is much more than a simple free trade agreement, its breadth covers regulatory aspects in goods, services, and finance; the opening of public procurement markets; attitudes and policies of Canadian provinces towards liberalization; climate policies and international leadership claims of the EU in comparison to Canadian policy attempts; the challenges of the Euro project and the reform efforts; and the challenges of the Euro as a international reserve currency. CETA is a challenging project that will kick-start enormous changes in trade policy-making as well as in market openness in Canada. It will mark the EU's efforts to re-make the Atlantic Economy. This book provides deep insights into the ambiguity of the project and addresses the implications of a rapidly changing global economy for trade policy. Offering analysis of the financial industry, banking, trade policy, climate change strategy, and the Euro exchange rate, this book should be of interest to students and policy-makers alike.

International Trade Theory - A Critical Review (Paperback): Murray Kemp International Trade Theory - A Critical Review (Paperback)
Murray Kemp
R1,742 Discovery Miles 17 420 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Murray C. Kemp is one of Australia's foremost economists. He has held positions across the world including London School of Economics, U.C. Berkeley, Columbia University, McGill University, MIT, and latterly Macquarie University. Kemp was a Member of Council for the Econometric Society and was a Distinguished Fellow of the Economics Society of Australia. He has served as President of the International Economics and Finance Society. In 1987 he was awarded the Humboldt Foundation Prize.

This book brings together several essays on the current state of the theory of international trade. As the book's title suggests, the essays are critical of several major components of the existing theory; thus, the Ricardian principle of comparative advantage, the ancient and widely accepted belief that international free trade is potentially beneficial for all countries, and the more recently developed normative analysis of international transfers (foreign aid, war indemnities) are shown to be seriously defective.

The Euro in the 21st Century - Economic Crisis and Financial Uproar (Hardcover, New Ed): Maria Lorca-Susino The Euro in the 21st Century - Economic Crisis and Financial Uproar (Hardcover, New Ed)
Maria Lorca-Susino
R2,743 Discovery Miles 27 430 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Euro in the 21st Century clarifies the perception of the euro and empirically demonstrates that the euro has become a true common currency and the Eurozone a true optimal currency area, presenting, in turn, a model to imitate. In order to demonstrate this, this study analyzes the economic and monetary requirements and policies required to introduce a common currency as well as the theoretical underpinnings of both the European integration process and the historical economic, monetary, political, and social circumstances that favoured the creation of the economic and monetary union. Furthermore, this book sheds light on how the current economic and monetary circumstances are affecting the euro project through and analysis of three intertwined issues. It studies how the economic chaos and financial uproar, which has plagued the Eurozone and world economy since 2008, has affected the single-currency regime as well as the current image of the euro worldwide. Moreover it summarizes the lesson to be learnt from what can be considered 'the first euro crisis'. Finally, it thoroughly analyzes the behaviour of the US Federal Reserve, the European Central Bank, and the International Monetary Fund during this crisis. This book draws on and contributes to several bodies of literature within Political Economy, Economics, and International Relations and is particularly relevant at this time given that the current unfolding economic imbalances are causing some Eurozone Member States to rethink their economic and political views concerning the euro.

Margaret Liang, Chin Leng Lim
R3,314 Discovery Miles 33 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Singapore, a small Southeast Asian country with limited resources, transformed itself from a trading post to a successful, cosmopolitan nation with one of the most impressive growth rates in the world. Less well known, however, has been its role in regional and global trade negotiations. This book is a collection of sixteen essays written by a group of diplomats, policy-makers, and professors who became involved in international economic affairs, notably in GATT/WTO, regional and bilateral free trade negotiations. Here, they reveal their thoughts about the world economy and trading system, reflect on their experiences, and explain how they promoted national interests while advancing the global trade agenda. This book will appeal not only to professional diplomats, but to anyone interested in how international economic diplomacy works and Singapore's role and perspective as an open trading nation.

The China-US Trade War and South Asian Economies (Hardcover): Rahul Nath Choudhury The China-US Trade War and South Asian Economies (Hardcover)
Rahul Nath Choudhury
R4,067 Discovery Miles 40 670 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The USA and China, the world's largest economic powers, have been engaging in trade war since January 2018. The impact of this trade war is felt not only by US and China but also by other economies who have economic ties with them. This book provides insights into damages caused by this trade war. The first section of the book looks at the impact of the trade war on the global economy. It goes deeper to examine the trade war impact on the South Asian region. It is well-known that any imposition of new tariffs or an increase in existing tariffs would make imports more costly and render the exported goods less competitive. Yet, the book posits that the trade war has provided a window of opportunity to other countries not caught in it. The South Asian region, with countries like Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka, has actually reaped benefits from the widening trade dispute between the world's two biggest economies. This book will be a useful reference to help policymakers to undertake informed decisions and initiate programs to minimise the trade war impact.

Carsten Kowalczyk
R8,032 Discovery Miles 80 320 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Trade liberalization has had a major impact on the world economy. As nations continue to engage in preferential trade and with the launching of the first World Trade Organization multilateral round, the need to understand the consequences of trade liberalization has never been greater.Economic Integration and International Trade is a collection of the most important articles on international economic integration. The volume brings an innovative approach to the literature by using a methodology from the theory of tariffs and reform, rather than the conventional trade diversion and creation taxonomy, to select, organize, and unify contributions from almost fifty years of research. Topics include: the welfare consequences from integration, customs unions versus free trade areas, using international income transfers to facilitate trade liberalization, and the effects of integration on economic growth. Economic Integration and International Trade makes an important literature accessible to policymakers and business strategists, and to students, researchers, and teachers of economics, international business, political science and international relations.
