Applications of Nonlinear Dynamics To Developmental Process Modeling (Paperback): Karl M. Newell, Peter C.M. Molenaar Applications of Nonlinear Dynamics To Developmental Process Modeling (Paperback)
Karl M. Newell, Peter C.M. Molenaar
R1,235 R1,142 Discovery Miles 11 420 Save R93 (8%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

There has been an increasing interest in the application of dynamical systems to the study of development over the last decade. The explosion of the dynamical systems framework in the physical and biological sciences has opened the door to a new Zeitgeist for studying development. This appeal to dynamical systems by developmentalists is natural given the intuitive links between the established fundamental problems of development and the conceptual and operational scope of nonlinear dynamical systems. This promise of a new approach and framework within which to study development has led to some progress in recent years but also a growing appreciation of the difficulty of both fully examining the new metaphor and realizing its potential. Divided into 4 parts, this book is a result of a recent conference on dynamical systems and development held at Pennsylvania State University. The first 3 parts focus on the content domains of development that have given most theoretical and empirical attention to the potential applications of dynamical systems--physical growth and movement, cognition, and communication. These parts show that a range of nonlinear models have been applied to a host of developmental phenomena. Part 4 highlights two particular methodological issues that hold important implications for the modeling of developmental phenomena with dynamical systems techniques.

Life-span Development - Frameworks, Accounts and Strategies (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition): Leonie Sugarman Life-span Development - Frameworks, Accounts and Strategies (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition)
Leonie Sugarman
R3,442 Discovery Miles 34 420 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This thorough revision of the highly successful first edition of Life-Span Development offers the reader a wide-ranging and thought provoking account of human development throughout the lifespan. The lifespan approach emphasises that development does not stop when we cease to be adolescents but goes on throughout adulthood and into old age.

In initial chapters Leonie Sugarman outlines the issues surrounding the notion of development and how it can be studied, including reviews of the work of key theorists Erikson, Levinson and Gould. She goes on to consider the different ways in which the life course can be construed: as a series of age-related stages; as a cumulative sequence; as a series of developmental tasks; as a series of key life events and transitions or as a narrative construction which creates a sense of dynamic continuity. A final chapter looks at how people cope, the resources that are available and the theoretical and practical issues regarding interventions to assist them in the process.

New to this edition is increased coverage of the topical issue of successful ageing and a new chapter on the increasingly popular narrative approach to lifespan development. This edition is also more student-friendly with exercises in self-reflection that encourage the reader to look at the development of their own lives or those of their current or future clients. Boxed material highlighting major theories and clarifying concepts is also included. This book will be invaluable for students of developmental and occupational psychology and professionals in the fields of health management, education and social work.

Statistical Analysis of Human Growth and Development (Hardcover, New): Yin Bun Cheung Statistical Analysis of Human Growth and Development (Hardcover, New)
Yin Bun Cheung
R3,389 Discovery Miles 33 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Statistical Analysis of Human Growth and Development is an accessible and practical guide to a wide range of basic and advanced statistical methods that are useful for studying human growth and development. Designed for nonstatisticians and statisticians new to the analysis of growth and development data, the book collects methods scattered throughout the literature and explains how to use them to solve common research problems. It also discusses how well a method addresses a specific scientific question and how to interpret and present the analytic results. Stata is used to implement the analyses, with Stata codes and macros for generating example data sets, a detrended Q-Q plot, and weighted maximum likelihood estimation of binary items available on the book's CRC Press web page. After reviewing research designs and basic statistical tools, the author discusses the use of existing tools to transform raw data into analyzable variables and back-transform them to raw data. He covers regression analysis of quantitative, binary, and censored data as well as the analysis of repeated measurements and clustered data. He also describes the development of new growth references and developmental indices, the generation of key variables based on longitudinal data, and the processes to verify the validity and reliability of measurement tools. Looking at the larger picture of research practice, the book concludes with coverage of missing values, multiplicity problems, and multivariable regression. Along with two simulated data sets, numerous examples from real experimental and observational studies illustrate the concepts and methods. Although the book focuses on examples of anthropometric measurements and changes in cognitive, social-emotional, locomotor, and other abilities, the ideas are applicable to many other physical and psychosocial phenomena, such as lung function and depressive symptoms.

Typical and Atypical Development from Conception to Adolescence (Paperback): M. Herbert Typical and Atypical Development from Conception to Adolescence (Paperback)
M. Herbert
R1,235 Discovery Miles 12 350 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This text provides an interesting and informative account of the child's journey from the womb to the world outside, through childhood and into adolescence. It is based on the belief that it is vital for those training to work with children who have problems to understand what is typical or atypical in children's development. The first half of the book, discussing normal patterns of growth and development, is cross-referenced to equivalent chapters in the second half, which discuss the atypical route. These connections serve to emphasize the continuities between, and similarities of, children with typical and atypical conditions. Among the difficulties covered are: Pervasive developmental disorders Genetic disorders Physical impairments Learning difficulties Brain damage Emotional and behavioural disorders Personality disorders. Physical and mental illnessesThe text also deliberately links developmental and clinical psychology approaches in order to help readers connect their theoretical understanding of the physical and psychological problems of childhood with the practicalities of assessment, rehabilitation and treatment.

Fetal Development - A Psychobiological Perspective (Hardcover, Revised): Jean-Pierre Lecanuet, William P. Fifer, Norman A.... Fetal Development - A Psychobiological Perspective (Hardcover, Revised)
Jean-Pierre Lecanuet, William P. Fifer, Norman A. Krasnegor, William P. Smotherman
R4,255 Discovery Miles 42 550 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Based on the presentations given by well-known specialists at a recent multidisciplinary conference of developmental psychobiologists, obstetricians, and physiologists, this book is the first exhaustive attempt to synthesize the present scientific knowledge on fetal behavior. Utilizing a psychobiological analytic approach, it provides the reader with an overview of the perspectives, hypotheses, and experimental results from a group of basic scientists and clinicians who conduct research to elucidate the role of fetal behavior in development. Experimental and clinical as well as human and animal data are explored via comparative developmental analysis. The ontogeny of fetal spontaneous activity -- via the maturation of "behavioral states" -- and of fetal responsiveness to sensory stimulation is studied in detail. Results are provided from studies of embryonic/fetal and newborn behavior in chicks, rats, sheep, primates, and humans. Knowledge of fetal behavior is crucial to the obstetrician, neonatologist, developmental psychologist, and even the future parents, in order to follow and assess the gradual development of spontaneous responsive movements of the fetus. While assessing this important information, this text also examines the neuro-behavioral events taking place during the fetal period as an aid to understanding normal and pathological life span development.

Developmental Speech Disorders 2e (Paperback, 2nd Edition): P. Grunwell Developmental Speech Disorders 2e (Paperback, 2nd Edition)
P. Grunwell
R2,260 Discovery Miles 22 600 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book looks at the major changes that have occurred in the theory and practice of speech therapy for children with developmental speech disorders. It looks at current issues and their clinical implications, but the overall aim of the book is to set clinical practice firmly in a theoretical framework. While it is therefore essentially a practical book for practitioners, it also engages in the academic investigation of the nature of the different types of developmental speech disorders and their consequences for the children. This discussion provides the framework in which to consider clinical management and specific clinical techniques.

A recurrent theme throughout each chapter is the impact of linguistics upon our understanding and management of children' s problems in learning to pronounce. There is no doubt that the linguistic revolution in speech and language pathology has produced an entirely new perspective on these disorders by identifying the phonological dimension of speech development.

Of equal importance is the expansion of knowledge about children' s language development. Much more information is now available about phonological development in terms of what the developmental changes are and when they occur. This information is valuable in assessment and diagnosis. The book also includes a number of competing theories explaining how children develop their pronunciation patterns. These theories provide the premises upon which to establish a principled theory of therapy.

To reflect these issues and their clinical implications the book is divided into three sections. The first section explores the framework within which to discuss developmental speech disorders. The second section covers three specific types of pathological conditions with which developmental speech disorders are associated. The third section examines the problems of children who have no evident major disabling condition and yet they experience severe difficulties learning to pronounce and subsequently, more often than not, learning to read and write.

Live Free - Exceed Your Highest Expectations (Hardcover): Devon Franklin Live Free - Exceed Your Highest Expectations (Hardcover)
Devon Franklin
R748 Discovery Miles 7 480 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The bestselling author returns with his biggest book yet in which he teaches us the secret to living a happier life: get rid of as many expectations as possible-of ourselves, our future, our relationships, our career and our family. Expectations are the secret software, running on the hardware of our minds, controlling our emotions, decisions, and actions. How? Think about your life. How much of the sadness you feel derives from what you think should have happened-than with what actually happened? Think about your career. How much of the discontent you feel comes from your belief about where you'd be at this point-than with the progress you've actually made? Think about your relationships. How much of your dissatisfaction with friends, family, significant others, or spouses has to do with your unspoken presumptions-than with the people themselves? Having so many expectations is distorting your perspective, decreasing your happiness and disrupting your joy. You can live a life of true freedom, greater peace and less stress: release as many expectations as possible. This, DeVon Franklin argues, is the secret to a better life now. In a culture obsessed with more, Live Free is a bold counterintuitive book that can start a cultural revolution, Franklin contends. Everyone struggles with unnecessary expectations. But once you learn to let go of them, you can set the stage for the life you've always wanted.
