This second edition of Supporting Boys' Writing in the Early Years
shows how you can help boys to become confident and capable writers
by supporting them to write in ways that make sense to them - on
the move, outside and inside, in dens, in bushes, in mud, or
sprawled on the floor dressed as superheroes. The book reveals that
a playful, child-centred approach can allow boys and girls to
develop a writers' voice, raise attainment in writing and enhance
all aspects of young children's development. This new edition
includes: brand new examples, case studies and photographs from
over 200 recent early writing projects; up-to-date references fully
in line with the latest Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
documentation; a response to the increased focus in schools on
handwriting, in particular on cursive handwriting; a questioning of
the place of objective-led print in the classroom and a
recommendation that environmental print should reflect learning
rather than teaching; imaginative ideas for developing oral and
written storytelling; a consideration of some of the ways in which
challenging active play, such as superhero and weapon play, can be
channelled into playful writing; a greater discussion and
challenging of the emphasis placed on outcomes, over the process of
learning and development. Supporting Boys' Writing in the Early
Years will help you to create a truly enabling environment for
writing and supports the belief that writing experiences should be
EPIC: Everywhere, Playful and Purposeful, Inspirational and
Contextualised. It is an essential read for all practitioners who
want the children in their setting to flourish as motivated and
creative writers.
Roger the Pronoun wants to do the noun's job even though he knows
that he'll always be just a pronoun. It's book five of the Meet the
Parts of Speech series, in which the eight parts of speech are
personified based on the roles they play in the sentence. Feeling
that he's destined for more than just renaming nouns, Roger opens
up his own store next to Nelson's Nouns. But when Nelson goes
missing, Roger realizes that for life to mean anything at all,
every pronoun has to have an antecedent. Clear and informative back
matter includes textbook-style definitions and usage examples of
subject and object pronouns, reflexive and intensive pronouns, and
indefinite pronouns. In Grammaropolis, adverbs don't just modify
verbs; adverbs are bossy. They tell the verbs where to go, when to
leave, and how to get there. A pronoun doesn't just replace a noun;
Roger the pronoun is a shady character who's always trying to trick
Nelson the noun into giving up his spot. The Meet the Parts of
Speech series uses the mechanics of character and story (plot,
motivation, setting, etc.) to breathe life into what has
traditionally been unengaging subject matter. Our story-based
approach combines traditional instruction with original narrative
content, which appeals to different learning styles, increases both
engagement and retention, and encourages students to make a deeper
connection with the parts of speech and punctuation marks.
Fully updated, flexible resources taking an active-learning
approach that encourages students to aim higher in the 0500, 0524
and 0990 syllabuses. With travel writing, magazine articles, blogs
and extracts from writers such as Roald Dahl and D. H. Lawrence,
this coursebook helps students develop their English Language
skills through an active, communicative approach. The first unit in
each part covers text analysis, summary writing and note-taking.
The second deals with directed writing and the third looks at
descriptive and narrative composition and includes suggestions for
coursework topics if your school follows this pathway. Suggested
answers to coursebook questions are included in the teacher's book.

The text is supported by colourful, engaging illustrations to support comprehension and practise short vowel sounds and simple consonant clusters. Tippie learns and explores alongside his friends whilst staying true to typical child development. These sequential reading books were designed with a focus on sound development, linking sounds and letters as well as continuing building success and self-confidence in reading. The Level 2 books still focus on short vowels, simple consonants, sight words and final position consonant clusters. Children will love Tippie’s latest adventures as it is full of fun and humorous incidents along the way.
Student-centered instruction is the buzzword among today's
educators, yet the teaching of writing is still very top-down.
Student-centered should mean student-inspired, and that's where
Keys to Inspiration comes in. The path to a writer's truth always
starts with an emotion, and almost all forms of writing contain at
least a trace of emotional DNA. This book shows teachers how to
align emotion with subject matter, and it offers them lessons and
projects (from challenging writing exercises to larger projects,
such as memoir, research reports, and editorials) that resonate
with young authors. While Keys to Inspiration focuses sharply on
content, it contains an instructive mechanics section and an
Appendix of unique word lists (emotion-related words, themed
spelling lists, and alternatives to "went" and "said," to name a
few), as well as a few grammar worksheets. Once motivated, young
authors must learn to describe with detail, meddle with metaphor,
and mind their mechanics. Veteran writing instructor Steve Ford
offers many lessons and exercises that will polish students'
narrative skills, and he alerts teachers to the common spelling,
punctuation, and grammar mistakes that young writers need to learn
to avoid.
Comics are all around campuses everyday, and with students arriving
less prepared to tackle basics like reading, writing, and
analyzing, this text helps connect what students enjoy to the
classroom. Comic Connections: Analyzing Hero and Identity is
designed to help teachers from middle school through college find a
new strategy that they can use right away as part of their
curricular goals. Each chapter has three pieces: comic relevance,
classroom connections, and concluding thoughts; this format allows
a reader to pick-and-choose where to start. Some readers might want
to delve into the history of a comic to better understand
characters and their usefulness, while other readers might want to
pick up an activity, presentation, or project that they can fold
into that day's lesson. This book focuses on defining heroic traits
in popular characters such as Superman, Batman, or Daredevil, while
offering a scholarly perspective on how to analyze character and
identity in ways that would complement any literary classroom.
This book is a sequel to the author's earlier volume entitled,
"Literacy Instruction in Multicultural Settings." In addition to
extensive updating of earlier material, this book extends the
content coverage to include issues of power, attitudes, and
systemic change through the application of discourse theory and
critical theory. In doing so, however, the author has tried to
maintain the brevity, stylistic clarity, and classroom focus of the
earlier volume.
Key features of this important new book include:
*Teaching Flexibility. Although written with the classroom needs of
pre-service teachers in mind, theory and research are treated in
sufficient depth to make the book suitable for graduate courses and
for teacher study groups.
*Issues Organization. Each chapter is organized around familiar
issues that characterize schools and classrooms with diverse
student populations and explores these issues through new lenses
that most teachers have not previously encountered.
*Social Constructivist Perspective. Critical theory, discourse
theory, and historical perspective are introduced in order to
sensitize readers to the need to recognize negative, socially
sustained patterns that hamper literacy achievement and replace
them with positive patterns. To this end each chapter asks students
to maintain a running list of negative patterns along with
alternative positive patterns.
All teachers recognize how crucial the acquisition of good
reading skills is. This book will help teachers understand how
pupils learn and help them to meet those pupils' different needs
through appropriate intervention.
The book includes: clear explanations of different learning
difficulties; guidelines on types of assessment; advice on how to
select the best type of intervention and support.
The Level 7 Biff, Chip and Kipper Stories, written by Roderick Hunt
and illustrated by Alex Brychta, provide a rich story context to
help develop language comprehension and decoding skills. Stories,
More Stories A and More Stories B involve familiar situations and a
variety of fantasy settings through the magic key adventures.
Longer stories help to build reading stamina, which is important
for later reading success. Books contain inside cover notes to
support children in their reading. Help with childrens reading
development is also available at www.oxfordowl.co.uk.
This highly practical book helps K-8 teachers implement effective
reading interventions that support meaningful comprehension and
engage students with interesting, age-appropriate texts. Andrew P.
Johnson presents a range of strategies for addressing difficulties
in the core areas of word identification, fluency, and
comprehension. Packed with illustrative figures, the book provides
guidance and tools for assessing reading problems, combining and
adapting interventions for particular students, planning writing
activities to enhance reading, aligning efforts within a
response-to-intervention framework, and designing individualized
education programs. Informed by current research, Johnson candidly
targets "educational malpractice" and helps readers puzzle through
the controversies surrounding dyslexia diagnoses and special
education decision making.
