Writing and Growing - Transforming High School Students into Writers (Paperback): Timothy Horan Writing and Growing - Transforming High School Students into Writers (Paperback)
Timothy Horan
R877 Discovery Miles 8 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this book, Dr. Timothy Horan presents an original and highly effective writing program whose major goal is to transform high school students into accomplished writers and mature young adults. This writing program is innovative, rigorous, and engaging, and was designed with high school students in mind. This volume contains a total of twenty original writing projects that represent creative (and innovative) interpretations of Common Core Writing Standards. These projects focus on the worlds of contemporary secondary students, exploring such topics as technology, literature, goals for the future, and potential careers. Each assignment in this book is full and complete, and includes a reproducible outline that presents the assignment to students in a simplified graphical format. As students progress through this program, they will encounter engaging writing projects that foster growth and anticipate the changes occurring in students' lives during this time of development and transition. It will also prepare students for the rigors of writing in college, career, and the unwritten future that awaits all of them. Finally, Dr. Horan issues a call for every secondary school in the United States to create and implement courses singularly devoted to the craft of writing-and this book contains the curriculum for that course.

The Writing Program Administrator's Resource - A Guide To Reflective Institutional Practice (Hardcover): Stuart C. Brown,... The Writing Program Administrator's Resource - A Guide To Reflective Institutional Practice (Hardcover)
Stuart C. Brown, Theresa Jarnagi Enos; Contributions by Catherine (Assistant Editor) Cha
R4,693 Discovery Miles 46 930 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The role of the writing program administrator is one of diverse activities and challenges, and preparation for the position has traditionally come through performing the job itself. As a result, uninitiated WPAs often find themselves struggling to manage the various requirements and demands of the position, and even experienced WPAs often encounter situations on which they need advice. "The Writing Program Administrator's Resource" has been developed to address the needs of all WPAs, regardless of background or experience. It provides practical, applicable tools to effectively address the differing and sometimes competing roles in which WPAs find themselves.
Readers will find an invaluable collection of articles in this volume, addressing fundamental practices and issues encountered by WPAs in their workplace settings and focusing on the hows and whys of writing program administration. With formal preparation and training only now beginning to catch up to the very real needs of the WPA, this volume offers guidance and support from authoritative and experienced sources--educators who have established the definitions and standards of the position; who have run into obstacles and surmounted them; and who have not just survived but thrived in their roles as WPAs. Editors Stuart C. Brown and Theresa Enos contribute their own experience and bring together the voices of their colleagues to delineate the intellectual scope and practices of writing program administration as an emerging discipline. Established and esteemed leaders in the field offer insights, advice, and plans of action for the myriad scenarios encountered in the position, encouraging WPAs and helping them to realize that they often know more than they think they do.
This resource is required reading for the new WPA, and an essential reference for all who serve in the WPA role. As a guidebook for WPAs, it is destined to become a fixture on the desk of every educator involved with or interested in administrating writing programs, writing centers, and writing-across-the-curriculum efforts.

Gretchen S Bernabei, Laura Van Prooyen
R1,162 Discovery Miles 11 620 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Poetry is a joyful art form, but how do you teach students to joyfully read, analyze, and write poems? In Text Structures from Poetry, Grades 4-12, award-winning educator Gretchen Bernabei teams up with noted poet Laura Van Prooyen to light the path. Centered around 50 classroom-proven lesson and poem pairs, the mentor texts represent a broad range of voices in contemporary poetry and the canon. These unique and engaging lessons show educators how to "pop the hood" on a poem to discover what makes it work, using text structures to unlock the engine of a poem. This method enables educators to engage students in reading and re-reading a poem closely, to identify how the parts of the poem relate to each other to create movement, and to leverage what they have learned to write their own evocative poems. Each of the 50 lessons includes a mentor poem that serves as an excellent model for young writers, a diagram that illustrates the text structure of the poem, and several inspiring examples of student poems written to emulate the mentor poem. Easy-to-use instructional resources enhance instructor and student understanding and include: Teaching notes for unlocking the text structure of a poem and the engine that makes it work. Tips for exploring rhyme scheme, meter, and fixed forms. Instructional sequences that vary the ways students can read and write poems and other prose forms. Ideas for revising and publishing student poems. A "Meet the Contemporary Authors" section that includes fascinating messages from the contemporary poets. Teach your students to learn about poetry using the magic of poems themselves and lead the way to a rewarding love of poetry for teachers and students alike.

Yellow Workbook - A Complete Course for Young Writers, Aspiring Rhetoricians, and Anyone Else Who Needs to Understand How... Yellow Workbook - A Complete Course for Young Writers, Aspiring Rhetoricians, and Anyone Else Who Needs to Understand How English Works (Paperback)
Susan Wise Bauer, Audrey Anderson, Jessica Otto; Illustrated by Patty Rebne; Cover design or artwork by Mike Fretto
R986 Discovery Miles 9 860 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Yellow Workbook, along with the accompanying Key and the Core Instructor Text, make up a full year of Grammar for the Well-Trained Mind: a complete course that takes students from basic definitions ("A noun is the name of a person, place, thing, or idea") through advanced sentence structure and analysis, all the grammar skills needed to write and speak with eloquence and confidence. This innovative program combines the three essential elements of language learning: understanding and memorizing rules (prescriptive teaching), repeated exposure to examples of how those rules are used (descriptive instruction), and practice using those rules in exercises and in writing (practical experience). Each year, parents and teachers go through the dialogue, rules, and examples in the Core Instructor Text; students follow along in the Workbook. This repetition solidifies the concepts, definitions, and examples in the student's mind. There are four Workbooks. Each Workbook contains the same rules and examples, but four completely different sets of exercises and assignments, allowing students to develop a wide-ranging knowledge of how the rules and examples are put to use in writing. The Workbook comes with its own Key, providing not only answers, but also explanations for the parent/instructor, and guidance as to when the answers might be ambiguous (as, in English, they often are). All of the rules covered, along with the repeated examples for each, are assembled for ongoing reference in The Grammar Guidebook. Every step of the sentence diagramming process is gathered for reference, along with illustrations, in The Diagramming Dictionary. These will become the student's indispensable guide to writing through high school, into college and beyond. Step-by-step instruction takes students from the most basic concepts through advanced grammatical concepts such as modal and hortative verbs and multiple functions of noun clauses. Extensive diagramming exercises reinforce the rules and help technical and visual learners to understand and use the English language effectively. Each step of the diagramming process is illustrated and thoroughly explained to the student. Text for examples and exercises are drawn from great works of literature, as well as from well-written nonfiction texts in science, mathematics, and the social sciences. *Regular review is built into each year of work. One of four non-sequential workbooks, each containing new exercises that allow students to practice and apply the grammar principles under study.
