Fredrica Harris Thompsett, a scholar of the English Reformation, introduces us to the role that history has played in creating and shaping the Episcopal Church as we know it today. The Anglican parish is uniquely embedded in English culture and society, by virtue both of its antiquity and close allegiance with secular governance. Over the two years there is a different first reading from the Scriptures whilst both years share the same Gospel readings. So the Old Testament prepared the way for the coming of the Christ that is recorded in the New Testament. It is this part of the Bible that is particularly interesting for Christians today as it gives insight as to how those first Christians came to believe in Jesus as their Saviour and were baptised into His death. It also reveals many of the problems that beset the first Christians over morality, worship, and obligations. These are still relevant today. Thus we need to heed the advice of Paul and other Christian writers of the first century in how we live out the teachings of Christ.

What motivated the men who gave us our Bible in English? Much of the answer lies in the turbulent religious history of the era, but there are clues which can be found in the prefaces published with each new edition. This collection of the prefaces to the main translations of the Bible into English between 1525 and 1611 has been prepared to coincide with the four-hundredth anniversary of the fi rst edition of the Authorised or King James Version. An introductory chapter delineates the key events, and this is followed by each of the texts, with notes indicating the sources of the various quotations and allusions. This collection therefore provides the historical and theological ancestry of a much loved translation, and readers can hardly fail to be challenged by the spiritual concerns of the translators. For many years there has been misconception and mystery surrounding the events that led up to the civil war in Rwanda and the subsequent genocide in 1994. Further ethnic conflict led to the deaths of thousands of civilians, prisoners, insurgents, soldiers and even foreign nationals. This extensive thesis not only attempts to investigate the source of the Rwandan conflict, but examines the role of the Anglican Church's in helping to reconcile the divided parties. Through personal interviews and in-depth research, the author provides a well-argued analysis of the conflict, with the focus on Christian teaching having had an impact on the socio-cultural construction of Rwandan relations. It explores in detail the historical and sociological perspectives that surround the conflict and examines the reliability, replication and validity of claims that the conflict was based on the alleged natural hatred between Hutu and Tutsi ethnic groups. The book also raises practical and theoretical questions about the Belgian era and how the conflict was by Belgian rule and has subsequently plagued the Rwandan people ever since.

Though he never attained the highest office in the Church of England, Samuel Horsley was the ablest bishop on the bench in the late eighteenth century. He was a scientist, parliamentarian, and man of letters, as well as a leading theologian and diocesan administrator. While his forthright opposition to popular politics at the time of the French Revolution earned him the label 'Grand Mufti', his social outlook found a distinct place for the benevolence of the age. 1983 marked the 150th anniversary of John Keble's Assize Sermon, a sermon which Newman recognized as the beginning of the Oxford Movement. The religious revival which it signalled, though originating in a particular political challenge to the Church of England, was far-reaching in its effect. The continuity and catholic identity of Anglicanism was powerfully affirmed; sacramental worship was restored to a central place in Anglican devotion; religious orders were revived; and both in the mission field and in the slums, devoted priests laboured with new vigour and a new sense of the Church. This study of some of the major themes and personalities of the Catholic revival in Anglicanism highlights some of these aspects, and in particular, points to the close relationship between theology and sacramental spirituality which was at the heart of the movement. To recognize this central characteristic of the revival can contribute much, the author believes, to the renewal of the Catholic tradition in Anglicanism today.

The Book of Common Prayer is one of the most influential books in history. First published in the reign of Edward VI, in 1549, it was a product of the English Reformation following the break with Rome. A great communicator, with a need for self-disclosure, he is nonetheless revealed "and" concealed in his writings.
