In this collection you'll find fun and accessible piano
accompaniments for the 32 well-known Christmas carols and pieces
featured in the Fiddle Time and Viola Time Christmas melody books.
Accompaniments are labelled with the relevant instruments and the
differences between violin and viola melodies are indicated
throughout. Essential for teachers and musical parents, this book
will help motivate all young violin and viola players as they learn
to play.
Yehudi Menuhin shares with the reader his unique store of
understanding about the violin, about how to exercise and practise,
about the techniques of performance. His reflections on the nature
and scope of his instrument are profoundly illuminating and his
theories on interpretation particularly valuable. A section on the
violinist as teacher/student contains a fascinating transcript of a
lesson with Yehudi Menuhin, who also writes separately about the
violinist as orchestral player, leader, chamber music player,
recitalist and soloist. William Primrose writes the distinguished
monograph on the viola and describes the instrument as 'a violin
with a college education'. He was an acknowledged technical master
of the viola who, along with Lionel Tertis, was one of the finest
exponents of this beautiful instrument of the 20th century. Denis
Stevens, the British musicologist and specialist in early music,
provides and interesting chapter on the history of the violin and
looks in detail at the monumental challenge that is Bach's Six
Solos for Violin without Bass Accompaniment better known as the
Sonatas and Partitas for Violin.
Leading authorities explore, in direct and accessible language,
chamber-music masterpieces by twenty-one prominent composers since
1900. Modern composers as diverse as Bela Bartok, Maurice Ravel,
Benjamin Britten, and John Cage have confided some of their most
personal and intense thoughts to the medium of the string quartet.
The resulting repertoire has won the allegiance of string
players-and of listeners in the concert hall and at home. Yet,
until now, no book has addressed the language of these remarkable
works, their interactions with the masterpieces of Beethoven and
others, and theirnew approaches to musical expression. Intimate
Voices, organized in rough chronological order, offers the
observations and intuitions of leading authorities on quartets by
twenty-one composers from eleven countries. Its two
volumes-available separately or together-comprise an indispensable
guide to amateur and professional chamber musicians, scholars,
students, and anyone seeking a deeper acquaintance with the great
achievements of twentieth-century music. Edited by Evan Jones,
Associate Professor of Music Theory, Florida State University
College of Music.
Play the Viol is the first comprehensive guide to appear in modern times and covers the treble, tenor, and bass viol. Its detailed technical instruction is based on original sources and on Alison Crum's extensive experience of performing and teaching. The book assumes no knowledge beyond an ability to read music, but aims to help players to reach an advanced standard, even without regular access to a teacher.

This book explains and shows in detail the various techniques used
by fiddle players in creating a traditional style of playing. All
the information is presented in the context of the music itself,
with numerous transcribed and recorded examples. It is aimed not
only at the beginner, but also the fiddle-player (and indeed
violinist) with some knowledge and experience who wishes to learn
more. For those unable to read music, a chapter on notation is
included. Particular emphasis is given to bowing and ornamentation,
with individual chapters devoted to jigs, slides, polkas,
hornpipes, airs and reels. The book also attempts to convey
something of the excitement felt in playing music which has a large
degree of improvisation, albeit within certain bounds. The
demonstration CD, which features a large selection of the
transcribed tunes and ornaments performed by Cranitch, is an
invaluable aid to learning as it allows the listener to hear how
the music and ornamentation should sound.
