1) This is the only book that is written as a coursebook for
Improv, and directed to the college classroom. 2) Brings various
aspects of the jazz learning process together -- practicing scales,
chord arpeggios and melodic motives in 12 keys, along with the
assimilation of the rhythmic nature of jazz and its related forms
of (primarily African American) music -- in one systematic,
organized and easy-to-assimilate manner. 3) Chapters are organized
with: - a paragraph or two explaining a particular scale/harmonic
basis or a common form used in jazz repertoire - suggested
exercises, from basic scales to advanced melodic motives taken
directly from recordings - a repertoire list that employs the
harmonic, melodic or formal aspects being discussed in each chapter
- concludes with a transcription of an improvised solo by a jazz
master which illustrates how theory is put into practice. 4)
Includes supplementary materials such as recordings of the
transcribed solos, relevant Aebersold Play-Along recordings, and
fake books
Learning to play an instrument can be fund and, at times,
frustrating. This lively, accessible book helps young people cope
with the difficulties involved in learning a new instrument and
remaining dedicated to playing and practicing. Teens from renowned
music programs - including the Juilliard School's Pre-College
Program and Boston University's Tanglewood Institute - join pro
musicians such as Wynton Marsalis, Paula Robison, and James Galway
in offering practical answers to questions from what instrument to
play to where the musical road may lead.
In this revised and expanded edition, Amy Nathan has updated the
book to address today's more technologically-minded young musician.
Expanded sections cover the various ways students can use
technology to assist in mastering an instrument and in making
practice time more productive, from using the Internet to download
pieces to be learned and playing along with downloaded tunes to
practicing with computer-based practice programs, CDs, and
videos/DVDs of musical performances. She also addresses concerns of
young composers and conductors, two groups not mentioned in the
original edition. The book's updated Resource Guide suggests where
to get additional help, both online and off.

Francis James Child's English and Scottish Popular Ballads,
published in ten parts from 1882 to 1898, contained the texts and
variants of 305 extant themes written down between the thirteenth
and nineteenth centuries. Unsurpassed in its presentation of texts,
this exhaustive collection devoted little attention to the ballad
music, a want that was filled by Bertrand Harris Bronson in his
four volume Traditional Tunes of the Child Ballads. The present
book is an abridged, one-volume edition of that work, setting forth
music and text for proven examples of oral tradition, with a new
comprehensive introduction. Its convenient format makes readily
available to students and scholars the materials for a study of the
Child ballads as they have been preserved in the British-American
singing tradition. Originally published in 1977. The Princeton
Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again
make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished
backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the
original texts of these important books while presenting them in
durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton
Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly
heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton
University Press since its founding in 1905.
With Trumpet, Drum and Fife is described as a 'short treatise
covering the rise and fall of military musical instruments on the
battlefield'. Despite there being a plethora of books about
military music, With Trumpet, Drum and Fife stands out from the
crowd in that it explores new areas of the world of military
musical instruments. Its easy to read format and conciseness
unwraps a depth and breadth of detail contained within. The
chapters of the book guide you from the Ancient World through to
the Restoration and up to the modern day giving examples of the
origins and developments of the instruments employed. The author
gives unique and well-researched accounts of the role of drummers
within the military environment. The text explores the historical
context of land battles and the importance of signalling
instruments used in times of conflict. The status and pecking order
of musicians within the military and the unique development of
Drummers' uniforms are also detailed with the images contained
within the book, highlighting specific areas of interest. Mike
Hall's personal knowledge and experiences of being a Senior Drum
Major in the Coldstream Guards add polish and credulity to the
content. Reading through the book you will uncover a mine of
interesting information about the evolution of Drum and Fife duty
and the historical roles of the Drum Major General and the Trumpet
Major. The role of the Boy Drummer is discussed in relation to his
importance on the battlefield and in the application of military
discipline. With Trumpet Drum and Fife is unique in its approach,
is long overdue and fills a niche in military history.
In the 1930s swing music was everywhere--on radio, recordings, and in the great ballrooms, hotels, theatres, and clubs. Perhaps at no other time were drummers more central to the sound and spirit of jazz. Benny Goodman showcased Gene Krupa. Jimmy Dorsey featured Ray McKinley. Artie Shaw helped make Buddy Rich a star while Count Basie riffed with the innovative Jo Jones. Drummers were at the core of this music; as Jo Jones said, "The drummer is the key--the heartbeat of jazz." An oral history told by the drummers, other musicians, and industry figures, Drummin' Men is also Burt Korall's memoir of more than fifty years in jazz. Personal and moving, the book is a celebration of the music of the time and the men who made it. Meet Chick Webb, small, fragile-looking, a hunchback from childhood, whose explosive drumming style thrilled and amazed; Gene Krupa, the great showman and pacemaker; Ray McKinley, whose rhythmic charm, light touch, and musical approach provided a great example for countless others, and the many more that populate this story. Based on interviews with a collection of the most important jazzmen, Drummin' Men offers an inside view of the swing years that cannot be found anywhere else.
