Treating Postnatal Depression - A Psychological Approach for Health Care Practitioners (Paperback): J. Milgrom Treating Postnatal Depression - A Psychological Approach for Health Care Practitioners (Paperback)
J. Milgrom
R1,652 Discovery Miles 16 520 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

When mothers feel depressed in the months after childbirth, their feelings have often been dismissed as understandable reactions to the stress of caring for a new baby, perhaps complicated by family and marital demands. Most mothers cope, with varying degrees of support and success, but for many the neglect and misunderstanding of postnatal emotional problems can lead to long-term difficulties, with implications for their families as well as for mental health services. This book provides an understanding of depression following childbirth which draws together current theories and a synthesis of key research with a framework for intervention. It provides a novel way of thinking about postnatal depression, and a treatment program which is based on this model. The clinical programs and interventions which are outlined have been found to be effective at reducing postnatal depression. These programs are aimed at developing coping skills in women which:

  • Reduce the symptoms of postnatal depression
  • Improve maternal functioning in terms of self-esteem, assertiveness and coping
  • Address marital and partner difficulties which often arise
  • Deal with parent-infant difficulties the may exist
  • Facilitate the use and development of existing social networks
The authors have reviewed current knowledge on postnatal depression, and given guidelines for best practice in a variety of approaches to treatment and prevention, Included is a detailed account of a tried-and-tested 10-week treatment program, together with materials and resources that a busy clinician might need to implement a similar program. Treating postnatal Depression will be a valuable resource for clinical psychologists, counsellors, psychiatrists, nurses, health visitors, midwives and other professionals who need to understand and deal with the emotional problems of mothers and babies. "A very readable book which presents an excellent overview of this important topic, and allows the authors to share their wealth of clinical experience in the clinical management of depressed mothers." Professor Peter Lewinsohn, University of Oregon "This book is a very timely and accessible approach for health care workers who treat women with postnatal depression Medical interventions alone are rarely adequate in the management of this disorder, an understanding of the psychological issues is essential, and this comprehensive manual, which deals with how to approach the complexities of the disorder, will aid workers significantly and, ultimately, benefit those who are suffering." Professor Anne Buist, University of Melbourne Austin & Repatriation Medical Centre
SBAs and EMQs in Obstetrics and Gynaecology for Medical Students (Paperback, 1st New edition): Neel Sharma SBAs and EMQs in Obstetrics and Gynaecology for Medical Students (Paperback, 1st New edition)
Neel Sharma
R1,088 Discovery Miles 10 880 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

'Regardless of your level of obstetrics and gynaecology knowledge and experience, this book will most definitely have something to offer you.'- Tiago Villanueva in his Foreword. Undergraduate medical students often struggle with at least some of the specialty elements of their studies. Some face a further challenge with the advent of the Medical Schools Council Assessment Alliance (MSC-AA, formerly known as UMAP), with a move away from testing specific clinical facts to an assessment focused on preparing to be a foundation doctor and the knowledge such a trainee needs on a daily basis. Neel Sharma has written three self-assessment books - on psychiatry, obstetrics and gynaecology, and paediatrics - designed to help students tackle both the new form of assessment as well as the traditional style of examination. Questions covering all common presentations are included in SBA and EMQ formats with relevant, concise explanations as answers.

Fetal Alcohol Abuse Syndrome (Hardcover, 1998 ed.): Ernest L. Abel Fetal Alcohol Abuse Syndrome (Hardcover, 1998 ed.)
Ernest L. Abel
R1,678 Discovery Miles 16 780 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

My initial purpose in writing this book was to offer readers an update of my book Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and Fetal Alcohol Effects (Plenum, 1984), which con tained a broad overview of the history (actually the absence of any history) ofthe awareness of alcohol's teratogenic potential; a review of alcohol's pharmacology, especially with respect to pregnancy; a survey of the physical and behavioral effects of prenatal alcohol exposure; and an overview of the mechanisms sus pected of being responsible for those effects. I have omitted most of the previously examined historical and pharmacologi cal information because not much of what was previously discussed needed revision. On the other hand, because much more has been learned about the consequences of prenatal alcohol exposure and its potential mechanisms of action, I have considerably expanded my discussion of these topics. In doing so, I have attempted to include as much new material as possible without (I hope) being overly pedantic and thereby losing the proverbial forest for the trees. No book is ever entirely neutral in the topics it discusses, the issues it raises, or in its conclusions. In sifting through hundreds and oftentimes thousands of articles, writers have to choose which facts to emphasize and which to ignore. Every idea cannot be chronicled and every article cannot (and should not) be cited. In going about the business of picking and choosing, however, a writer has an obligation to present the arguments for and against a particular conclusion."

Placenta and Trophoblast - Methods and Protocols, Volume II (Hardcover, 2006 ed.): Michael J Soares, Joan S Hunt Placenta and Trophoblast - Methods and Protocols, Volume II (Hardcover, 2006 ed.)
Michael J Soares, Joan S Hunt
R5,653 Discovery Miles 56 530 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The aim of the two-volume set of Placenta and Trophoblast: Methods and Protocols is to offer contemporary approaches for studying the biology of the placenta. The chapters contained herein also address critical features of the female organ within which the embryo is housed, the uterus, and some aspects of the embryo-fetus itself, particularly those of common experimental animal models. In keeping with the organization used effectively in other volumes in this series, each chapter has a brief introduction followed by a list of required items, protocols, and notes designed to help the reader perform the expe- ments without difficulty. In both volumes, sources of supplies are given and illustrations highlight particular techniques as well as expected outcomes. A key aspect of these volumes is that the contributors are at the forefronts of their disciplines, thus ensuring the accuracy and usefulness of the chapters. Placenta research has progressed rapidly over the past several decades by taking advantage of the technical advances made in other fields. For example, the reader will note that many techniques, such as reverse transcriptase po- merase chain reaction, northern and western blotting, microarray analyses and in situ hybridization experiments, are routinely used for dissecting a wide range of experimental questions. Protein analysis and functional experiments on tissues and cells that comprise the maternal-fetal interface benefit from studies in en- crinology, immunology, and developmental biology. These volumes also present new ideas on investigating gene imprinting and gene transfer via viral vectors.

Third-Party Reproduction - A Comprehensive Guide (Hardcover, 2014 ed.): James M. Goldfarb Third-Party Reproduction - A Comprehensive Guide (Hardcover, 2014 ed.)
James M. Goldfarb
R5,018 Discovery Miles 50 180 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The first IVF conceived birth in 1978 resulted in a significant growth of third party reproductive options which continue to raise ethical, legal, and psychological questions. Third party reproduction procedures can involve as many as five people: sperm donor, egg donor, gestational carrier, and intended parents. "Third-Party Reproduction: A Comprehensive Guide" utilizes experts in the field to address the medical, psychological, ethical and legal aspects of sperm donation, egg donation, embryo donation, and the use of gestational carriers. In addition, there are chapters on the medical and ethical aspects of posthumous reproduction, religious aspects of third party reproduction, and how to avoid pitfalls of third party reproduction. Aimed at physicians, trainees, psychologists, nurses, and social workers whose practices may include patients considering third party reproduction, the intent of this book is to provide a comprehensive and practical overview of the many aspects of third party reproduction to help all those involved to better understand them. Patients considering third party reproduction may also find value in this book.

Childbirth in the Age of Plastics (Paperback, 2nd edition): Michel Odent Childbirth in the Age of Plastics (Paperback, 2nd edition)
Michel Odent
R366 R332 Discovery Miles 3 320 Save R34 (9%) Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Since the middle of the twentieth century, the development of plastics has been one of the main factors influencing the history of medicine. For example, an anaesthesiologist was formerly an expert in delivering drugs by inhalation. Today, this expert delivers drugs through plastic catheters, in particular via intravenous and epidural routes. Traditionally, the scalpel was the symbol of surgery. Today, surgeons operate on internal organs with flexible plastic endoscopes - without cutting the skin. A typical modern woman in labour has one of her arms connected to a plastic bag through a plastic tube, while a plastic catheter is inserted in the epidural space in her spine. Focusing on obstetrics, this first book about the history of medicine in relation to the plastic revolution asks vital questions about childbirth today - and tomorrow - and demonstrates that the current turning point in the history of childbirth is also a turning point in the history of humanity. Introduced as a medical student to the surgical unit of a Paris hospital in 1949, and still involved in several fields of medicine, Michel Odent has the authority to study contemporary history from this new perspective.

Midwifery, Obstetrics and the Rise of Gynaecology - The Uses of a Sixteenth-Century Compendium (Hardcover, New Ed): Helen King Midwifery, Obstetrics and the Rise of Gynaecology - The Uses of a Sixteenth-Century Compendium (Hardcover, New Ed)
Helen King
R4,630 Discovery Miles 46 300 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Gynaeciorum libri, the 'Books on [the diseases of] women,' a compendium of ancient and contemporary texts on gynaecology, is the inspiration for this intensive exploration of the origins of a subfield of medicine. This collection was first published in 1566, with a second edition in 1586/8 and a third, running to 1097 folio pages, in 1597. While examining the origins of the compendium, Helen King here concentrates on its reception, looking at a range of different uses of the book in the history of medicine from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century. Looking at the competition and collaboration among different groups of men involved in childbirth, and between men and women, she demonstrates that arguments about history were as important as arguments about the merits of different designs of forceps. She focuses on the eighteenth century, when the 'man-midwife' William Smellie found his competence to practise challenged on the grounds of his allegedly inadequate grasp of the history of medicine. In his lectures, Smellie remade the 'father of medicine', Hippocrates, as the 'father of midwifery'. The close study of these texts results in a fresh perspective on Thomas Laqueur's model of the defeat of the one-sex body in the eighteenth century, and on the origins of gynaecology more generally. King argues that there were three occasions in the history of western medicine on which it was claimed that women's difference from men was so extensive that they required a separate branch of medicine: the fifth century BC, and the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries. By looking at all three occasions together, and by tracing the links not only between ancient Greek ideas and their Renaissance rediscovery, but also between the Renaissance compendium and its later owners, King analyzes how the claim of female 'difference' was shaped by specific social and cultural conditions. Midwifery, Obstetrics and the Rise of Gynaecology makes a genuine contribution not only to the history of medicine and its subfield of gynaecology, but also to gender and cultural studies.

Prenatal Assessment of Multiple Pregnancy (Hardcover): Isaac Blickstein, Louis G. Keith Prenatal Assessment of Multiple Pregnancy (Hardcover)
Isaac Blickstein, Louis G. Keith
R5,533 Discovery Miles 55 330 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Following on from the success of their previous standard textbook on Multiple Pregnancy, the authors have refocused their attention on prenatal assessment in multiple pregnancy and come up with condensed and revised material in a free-standing text. Multiple pregnancies are associated with higher levels of morbidity and fetal distress, and so effective and rapid diagnosis of problems is paramount. Those clinicians who would not have a practical application for all the aspects covered comprehensively in the earlier work will find this volume a clinically orientated and extremely useful addition to their working library.

MRCOG - Pt. 2, 2008 (Paperback, 1 New Ed): Marwan Habiba, Andrea Akkad, Justin Konje MRCOG - Pt. 2, 2008 (Paperback, 1 New Ed)
Marwan Habiba, Andrea Akkad, Justin Konje
R1,095 Discovery Miles 10 950 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This title includes Foreword by David Taylor, Professor and Vice Dean of Leicester Medical School. Preparing for the Part 2 MRCOG examination remains a daunting and complex task, particularly as learning and revision often need to fit around clinical commitments. Much has been written about how to prepare for and pass exams, yet it remains surprising how often well-read candidates provide unsatisfactory answers in areas which they know well. Clearly, a sound understanding of the topic area is essential, but deeper knowledge also increases uncertainty, and the vast developments in the field mean that proficiency in all areas is next to impossible. Thus a critical point for postgraduate candidates, who more often than not will prepare for the examination in isolation, is to develop a real understanding of what the examination is meant to assess...This revision aid in obstetrics and gynaecology is based on the Extended Matching Question format (EMQ). It contains forty-two questions of varying degrees of difficulty, along with detailed answers. "MRCOG Part 2 Essential EMQs" is an indispensable study and revision aid for postgraduate medical students preparing for Part 2 of the Membership of the Royal College of Gynaecologists (MRCOG) examination or equivalent. "The number of published revision aids including this question format in postgraduate Obstetrics and Gynaecology remains limited. With this book we wanted to produce a comprehensive selection of EMQ, covering broad areas relevant to the speciality, which would be useful those preparing for postgraduate examinations at Part 2 MRCOG level or equivalent." - Marwan Habiba, Andrea Akkad, Justin Konje.

Daryl Dob, Anita Holdcroft, Griselda Cooper
R1,526 Discovery Miles 15 260 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This work includes Foreword by Phillip J S Steer, Professor of Obstetrics, Faculty of Medicine, Imperial College London. It includes Introduction by Gwyneth Lewis, National Clinical Lead for Maternal Health and Maternity Services, Department of Health, England and Director of the UK Confidential Enquiries into Maternal Deaths. 'The reductions in maternal mortality over the last half century are an eloquent testimony to the value of the technical expertise in life support that anaesthetists bring to the management of labour complications. Many direct causes of maternal death have been substantially reduced as a result of anaesthetic innovations ranging from advances in regional anaesthesia to the panoply of techniques used in intensive care. This book is essential reading.' - Phillip J Steer, in his Foreword. Offering a unique insight into real cases, this book covers the physiology, pharmacology and organisational factors involved in previous maternal deaths, highlighting key lessons to be learnt. This practical guide provides an ideal introduction for new anaesthetists and up-to-date information for senior practitioners, particularly those who cover labour wards. It is also invaluable for anaesthetic nurses, obstetricians and midwives. 'For more than 50 years the Confidential Enquiries into Maternal Deaths in the UK have collected together invaluable information about why mothers die in pregnancy and childbirth. For the first time ever, this unique book collects together all the valuable lessons into one volume. Experts in their fields provide a physiological, pharmacological, and evidence based commentary on the events of each death. The overall result pays homage to the value of collecting together lessons from the past, and we hope will help people avoid repetition of these situations in the future.' - Daryl Dob, Anita Holdcroft and Griselda Cooper, in the Preface.
