Business & Industry - History of the Prairie West Series 4 (Hardcover): Gregory P. Marchildon Business & Industry - History of the Prairie West Series 4 (Hardcover)
Gregory P. Marchildon
R1,590 R1,438 Discovery Miles 14 380 Save R152 (10%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This fourth volume of the History of the Prairie West Series contains fifteen articles examining the rich history of business and early industry in Canada's Prairie Provinces prior to the Great Depression.
Without denying the central importance of agriculture in the development and growth of the early Prairie West, the essays in "Business and Inudstry" explore the lesser known history of some of the earliest businesses in the region. As we enter the second decade of the twenty-first century, a time when the three Prairie Provinces comprise the fastest-growing, and perhaps the most dynamic, economic regions in Canada, it may be worthwhile to cast our gaze back to an earlier and simpler era. In these essays, we can glimpse the origins of the entrepreneurial spirit and business ehtos that have come to define the business culture of the Prairie West.

Honouring Our Past, Embracing Our Future - Celebrating a Century of Excellence in Education at the University of Regina Campus... Honouring Our Past, Embracing Our Future - Celebrating a Century of Excellence in Education at the University of Regina Campus (Hardcover, New)
James Pitsula
R1,480 Discovery Miles 14 800 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In 2011, the University of Regina began celebrating an important milestone--the centennial of Regina College, the Methodist high school that was the foundation for the creation of the University itself more than 60 years later.
The University of Regina is a very different place than Regina College was 100 years ago. Where there were once only 27 students, there are now more than 12,000--approximately 1,400 of whom come from other countries. The University has 10 faculties, 25 departments, three Federated Colleges, and close to 20 research centres and institutes. In terms of both its physical size and the breadth of its programs, it is an institution that would scarcely be recognizable to those first students and faculty members who began at Regina College in 1911.
This centennial book--which contains archival and modern photographs and accompanying text by historian Dr. James Pitsula--is a striking presentation of that legacy. As the University of Regina marks 100 years of excellence in education on its campus, "Honouring Our Past, Embracing Our Future "is a tribute to the thousands of students, faculty members, and staff who have contributed to the institution's development over the past century.
Includes an introduction by current University President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Vianne Timmons and over 100 photos selected by Dr. Stephen King and Don Hall.

A Generation of Revolutionaries - Nikolai Charushin and Russian Populism from the Great Reforms to Perestroika (Paperback): Ben... A Generation of Revolutionaries - Nikolai Charushin and Russian Populism from the Great Reforms to Perestroika (Paperback)
Ben Eklof, Tatiana Saburova
R1,090 Discovery Miles 10 900 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Nikolai Charushin's memoirs of his experience as a member of the revolutionary populist movement in Russia are familiar to historians, but A Generation of Revolutionaries provides a broader and more engaging look at the lives and relationships beyond these memoirs. It shows how, after years of incarceration, Charushin and friends thrived in Siberian exile, raising children and contributing to science and culture there. While Charushin's memoirs end with his return to European Russia, this sweeping biography follows this group as they engaged in Russia's fin de siecle society, took part in the 1917 revolution, and struggled in its aftermath. A Generation of Revolutionaries provides vibrant and deeply personal insights into the turbulent history of Russia from the Great Reforms to the era of Stalinism and beyond. In doing so, it tells the story of a remarkable circle of friends whose lives balanced love, family and career with exile, imprisonment, and revolution.

C. Vann Woodward - America's Historian (Hardcover): James C. Cobb C. Vann Woodward - America's Historian (Hardcover)
James C. Cobb
R1,171 Discovery Miles 11 710 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

With an epic career that spanned two-thirds of the twentieth century, C. Vann Woodward (1908-1999) was a historian of singular importance. A brilliant writer, his work captivated both academic and public audiences. He also figured prominently in the major intellectual conflicts between left and right during the last half of the twentieth century, although his unwavering commitment to free speech and racial integration that affirmed his liberalism in the 1950s struck some as emblematic of his growing conservatism by the 1990s. Woodward's vision still permeates our understandings of the American South and of the history of race relations in the United States. Indeed, as this fresh and revealing biography shows, he displayed a rare genius and enthusiasm for crafting lessons from the past that seemed directly applicable to the concerns of the present-a practice that more than once cast doubt on his scholarship. James C. Cobb offers many original insights into Woodward's early years and private life, his long career, and his almost mythic public persona. In a time where the study and substance of American history are profoundly contested, Woodward's career is replete with lessons in how myths about the past, some created by historians themselves, come to be enshrined as historical truth.

Mound Builders and Monument Makers of the Northern Great Lakes, 1200-1600 (Hardcover): Meghan C L Howey Mound Builders and Monument Makers of the Northern Great Lakes, 1200-1600 (Hardcover)
Meghan C L Howey
R835 Discovery Miles 8 350 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Rising above the northern Michigan landscape, prehistoric burial mounds and impressive circular earthen enclosures bear witness to the deep history of the region's ancient indigenous peoples. These mounds and earthworks have long been treated as isolated finds and have never been connected to the social dynamics of the time in which they were constructed, a period called Late Prehistory.
In "Mound Builders and Monument Makers of the Northern Great Lakes, 1200-1600, " Meghan C. L. Howey uses archaeology to make this connection. She shows how indigenous communities of the northern Great Lakes used earthen structures as gathering places for ritual and social interaction, which maintained connected egalitarian societies in the process.
Examining "every available ceramic sherd from every northern earthwork," Howey combines regional archaeological investigations with ethnohistory, analysis of spatial relationships, and collaboration with tribal communities to explore changes in the area's social setting from 1200 to 1600. During this time, cultural shifts, such as the adoption of maize horticulture, led to the creation of the earthen constructions. Burial mounds were erected, marking claims to resources and defining areas for local ritual gatherings, while massive circular enclosures were constructed as intersocietal ceremonial centers. Together, Howey shows, these structures made up part of an interconnected, purposefully designed cultural landscape. When societies incorporated the earthworks into their egalitarian social and ritual behaviors, the structures became something more: ceremonial "monuments."
The first systematic examination of earthen constructions in what is today Michigan, "Mound Builders and Monument Makers of the Northern Great Lakes, 1200-1600 "reveals complicated indigenous histories that played out in the area before European contact. Howey's richly illustrated investigation increases our understanding of the diverse cultures and dynamic histories of the pre-Columbian ancestors of today's Great Lake tribes.

Searching for the Republic of the Rio Grande - Northern Mexico and Texas, 1838-1840 (Hardcover): Paul D. Lack Searching for the Republic of the Rio Grande - Northern Mexico and Texas, 1838-1840 (Hardcover)
Paul D. Lack
R1,148 Discovery Miles 11 480 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In 1838, a rebellion began in northern Mexico. A loose collective sought to establish a "Republic of the Rio Grande": the rebellion lasted two years, failed, and was then forgotten by history. This regional effort to establish an independent republic achieved some fleeting victories, although they were flanked by triumphs of the Supreme Government. Initially fed by a desire to defend the federalist system against a consolidated and unsupportive central government, zealous leaders such as Antonio Zavala and Antonio Canales led the popular uprising. As the skirmishes continued, these norteamericanos resorted to increasingly desperate measures, including soliciting aid from the newfound Republic of Texas, which supplied covert support for the rebel cause in the form of manpower, funding, and supplies. When the chastened Anglo Texans finally fled back to their homeland with the tacit compliance of the government of the Republic of Mexico, the states of Coahuila, Nuevo Leon, and Tamaulipas became entirely free of the norteamericanos, who faced almost unanimous hatred in Mexico by the time of their departure. Leaders from both Mexican factions in the civil conflict then sought peace and partnership against the threatened aggrandizement of the Republic of Texas. In that regard, this inconclusive regional revolt had many precursive elements to the aggression of the United States that resulted in war against Mexico from 1845 to 1848, fulfilling the imperial dreams previously uttered by Anglo Texans during this federalist revolt of 1838-1840. Searching for the Republic of the Rio Grande reads the smoke that would soon fan into the flames of open war against the Mexican Republic.

Nuclear India - Developing India's Nuclear Arms from Reluctance to Triad (Paperback): Sanjay Badri-Maharaj Nuclear India - Developing India's Nuclear Arms from Reluctance to Triad (Paperback)

Since the 1998 nuclear tests and the publication of India's Nuclear Doctrine, India has continued to face endemic security challenges from both China and Pakistan. The latter, through the apparent induction of tactical nuclear weapons into the equation and a rapid expansion of its fissile material production capacity has introduced an additional complication into Indian security calculations while China has become increasingly assertive and intransigent in its conduct towards its neighbours, India included. In light of an evolving challenge, India's nuclear strategy, predicated on a credible minimum deterrence threshold needs to be looked at in light of the prospect of lowered nuclear thresholds in the case of Pakistan as well as potential coercive nuclear posturing from China. In neither case can nuclear strategy be divorced from conventional military strategy as any operation - offensive or defensive - will now have to be carried out with the potential of nuclear escalation in mind. Nuclear India details the evolution of India's nuclear journey, from the 1960s to the present day, the historical events leading to the 1974 nuclear test, the reluctant nuclearization that occurred thereafter and the first phases of an operational nuclear deterrent in the late 1980s. By detailing the weapons and delivery systems developed, this book evaluates India's deterrent posture as it exists at present and its current evolutionary path. The speculated shape, size and composition of India's current deterrent is examined, including a detailed discussion of India's Ballistic missile programs, its air launched and ground based cruise missiles and its growing SSBN/SLBM capability. In addition, Nuclear India includes details of ballistic missile defences as well as the practicality of enhanced preparedness against decapitating or paralyzing EMP strikes and unconventional nuclear threats. Nuclear India examines India's nuclear doctrine and assess its credibility as India moves inexorably towards a nuclear triad.

The President and American Capitalism since 1945 (Hardcover): Mark H Rose, Roger Biles The President and American Capitalism since 1945 (Hardcover)
Mark H Rose, Roger Biles
R2,610 Discovery Miles 26 100 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Tracing the development of the U.S. presidency since Harry S. Truman took office in 1945, this volume describes the many ways the president's actions have affected the development of capitalism in the post-World War II era. Contributors show how the American "Consumer-in-Chief" has exerted a decisive hand as well as behind-the-scenes influence on the national economy and everyday American life. The essays in this volume highlight the president's impact on various areas including work, gender discrimination and affirmative action, student loans, retirement planning, the credit card economy, the federal budget, cities, poverty, energy, computers, and genetic engineering. They argue that by supporting policies that helped American businesses grow in all sectors, the president has helped domestic companies expand internationally and has added to a global image of the United States that is deeply intertwined with its leading corporations.

New York City Politics - Governing Gotham (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition): Bruce F. Berg New York City Politics - Governing Gotham (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition)
Bruce F. Berg
R1,236 Discovery Miles 12 360 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Most experts consider economic development to be the dominant factor influencing urban politics. They point to the importance of the finance and real estate industries, the need to improve the tax base, and the push to create jobs. Bruce F. Berg maintains that there are three forces which are equally important in explaining New York City politics: economic development; the city's relationships with the state and federal governments, which influence taxation, revenue and public policy responsibilities; and New York City's racial and ethnic diversity, resulting in demands for more equitable representation and greater equity in the delivery of public goods and services. New York City Politics focuses on the impact of these three forces on the governance of New York City's political system including the need to promote democratic accountability, service delivery equity, as well as the maintenance of civil harmony. This second edition updates the discussion with examples from the Bloomberg and de Blasio administrations as well as current public policy issues including infrastructure, housing and homelessness, land use regulations, and education.

During the years 1959-1966 Mississippi universities dominated the Southeastern Conference (SEC) in the big three sports-basketball, baseball, and football. Of the twenty-four championships that could be earned in those sports, University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) won six and Mississippi State University (MSU) won six. That is, the two Mississippi universities won twelve of the championships. That left the remaining twelve championships for the other members of the conference. Picking up in the late fifties, James Crockett explores the most decisive wins in each major sport, beginning at the source of these victories: the extraordinary coaches and their interesting personalities. With each year, Crockett charts the unreal rise within the SEC conference and the many hardships that faced these beloved teams as their students, faculty, and traditions changed all around them. Stars and coaches that shine in the book include John Vaught, Tom Swayze, Jake Gibbs, and Donnie Kessinger from Ole Miss; and Paul Gregory, Bailey Howell, Babe McCarthy, and the amazing SEC Champion Bulldog basketball team of 1962-1963. Rulers of the SEC: Ole Miss and Mississippi State, 1959-1966 enraptures readers with harrowing victories and multiyear, dynastic championships. It is a tale of great coaches, great athletes, and great teams as they adapt to a controversial era of college sports.

Where Misfits Fit - Counterculture and Influence in the Ozarks (Paperback): Thomas Michael Kersen Where Misfits Fit - Counterculture and Influence in the Ozarks (Paperback)
Thomas Michael Kersen
R1,062 Discovery Miles 10 620 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

All regions and places are unique in their own way, but the Ozarks have an enduring place in American culture. Studying the Ozarks offers the ability to explore American life through the lens of one of the last remaining cultural frontiers in American society. Perhaps because the Ozarks were relatively isolated from mainstream American society, or were at least relegated to the margins of it, their identity and culture are liminal and oftentimes counter to mainstream culture. Whatever the case, looking at the Ozarks offers insights into changing ideas about what it means to be an American and, more specifically, a special type of southerner. In Where Misfits Fit: Counterculture and Influence in the Ozarks, Thomas Michael Kersen explores the people who made a home in the Ozarks and the ways they contributed to American popular culture. Drawing on a wide variety of sources, Kersen argues the area attracts and even nurtures people and groups on the margins of the mainstream. These include UFO enthusiasts, cults, musical troupes, and back-to-the-land groups. Kersen examines how the Ozarks became a haven for creative, innovative, even nutty people to express themselves-a place where community could be reimagined in a variety of ways. It is in these communities that communitas, or a deep social connection, emerges. Each of the nine chapters focuses on a facet of the Ozarks, and Kersen often compares two or more cases to generate new insights and questions. Chapters examine real and imagined identity and highlight how the area has contributed to popular culture through analysis of the Eureka Springs energy vortex, fictional characters like Li'l Abner, cultic activity, environmentally minded communes, and the development of rockabilly music, and near communal rock bands such as Black Oak Arkansas.

The Shell Builders - Tabby Architecture of Beaufort, South Carolina, and the Sea Islands (Hardcover): Colin Brooker The Shell Builders - Tabby Architecture of Beaufort, South Carolina, and the Sea Islands (Hardcover)
Colin Brooker; Foreword by Lawrence S. Rowland
R1,098 Discovery Miles 10 980 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Beaufort, South Carolina, is well known for its historical architecture, but perhaps none is quite as remarkable as those edifices formed by tabby, sometimes called coastal concrete, comprising a mixture of lime, sand, water, and oyster shells. Tabby itself has a storied history stretching back to Iberian, Caribbean, Spanish American, and even African roots--brought to the United States by adventurers, merchants, military engineers, planters, and the enslaved. Tabby has been preserved most abundantly in the Beaufort area and its outlying islands, (and along the Sea Islands all the way to Florida as well) with Fort Frederick in 1734 having the earliest example of a diverse group of structures, which included town houses, seawalls, planters' homes, barns, agricultural buildings, and slave quarters. Tabby's insulating properties are excellent protection from long, hot, humid, and sometimes deadly summers; and on the islands, particularly, wealthy plantation owners built grand houses for themselves and improved dwellings for enslaved workers that after two hundred-plus years still stand today. An extraordinarily hardy material, tabby has a history akin to some of the world's oldest building techniques and is referred to as "rammed earth," as well as " tapia" in Spanish, "pise de terre" in French, and "hangtu" in Chinese. The form that tabby construction took along the Sea Islands, however, was born of necessity. Here stone and brick were rare and expensive, but the oyster shells that were used as the source for the tabby's lime base were plentiful. Today these bits of shell, often visible in the walls and forms constructed long ago, give tabby its unique and iconic appearance. Colin Brooker, architect and expert on historic restoration, has not only made an exhaustive foray into local tabby architecture and heritage; he also has made a multinational tour as well in search of tabby origins, evolution, and diffusion from the Bahamas to Morocco to Andalusia, which can be traced back as far as the tenth century. Brooker has spent more than thirty years investigating the origins of tabby, its chemistry, its engineering, and its limitations. The Shell Builders lays out a sweeping, in-depth, and fascinating investigative journey--at once archaeological, sociological, and historical--into the ways prior inhabitants used and shaped their environment in order to house and protect themselves, leaving behind an architectural legacy that is both mysterious and beautiful. Lawrence S. Rowland, a distinguished professor emeritus of history at the University of South Carolina Beaufort and past president of the South Carolina Historical Society, provides a foreword.

Vision Changing Charities - RNIB in Socio-Political Context, 1970-2010 (Paperback): Vision Changing Charities - RNIB in Socio-Political Context, 1970-2010 (Paperback)
R969 Discovery Miles 9 690 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

The late twentieth century saw charities grow from timid service deliverers into major providers with campaigning teeth. What caused this? How did they gain confidence and strength? In this fascinating history, examined through the eyes of RNIB from 1970 to 2010, Ian Bruce examines the internal drivers and the external socio-political environment that allowed and encouraged this explosion. Bruce's experience of leading a charity at the forefront of this change, and his participation in the wider charity sector for fifty years as both activist and academic, gives him an unsurpassed understanding of what happened and why. His first-hand knowledge will speak to charity workers as well as academics, covering themes such as the rise of beneficiary power against patronising providers; the change from welfare to rights; the shift from the medical to the social model of disability; and the adoption of social welfare and business professionalisms such as Strategic Planning and Charity Marketing. Today's charities have much to learn from the successes and mistakes of this dynamic period.

"The definitive two-volume survey of military clothing and equipment during the final years of the U.S.-Indian wars"

Building on the success of his best-selling "The U.S. Army in the West, 1870-1880: Uniforms, Arms, and Equipment," Douglas C. McChristian here presents a two-volume comprehensive account of the evolution of military arms and equipment during the years 1880-1892. The volumes are set against the backdrop of the final decade of the Indian campaigns--a key period of transition in United States military history.

In Volume 1, McChristian shows how the Quartermaster Department modified the design and manufacturing of uniforms and other clothing to meet the developing needs of troops in the American West. In Volume 2, he focuses on weapons and other accouterments, recounting in detail the army's quest to find a repeating rifle that would serve the needs of both cavalry and infantry across the plains.

Drawing on extensive research in public and private collections throughout the United States and lavishly illustrated with more than four hundred color and black-and-white illustrations, these volumes will serve as invaluable references for collectors, curators, and students of militaria and of the frontier era.

A Sojourn in Paradise - Jack Robinson in 1950s New Orleans (Hardcover): Howard Philips Smith A Sojourn in Paradise - Jack Robinson in 1950s New Orleans (Hardcover)
Howard Philips Smith; Foreword by Emily Oppenheimer
R1,621 Discovery Miles 16 210 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Jack Robinson made his name as a much-sought-after fashion and celebrity photographer during the 1960s and early 1970s, and his work is well documented in hundreds of pages of Vogue, Harper' Bazaar, and Life, as well as other publications. However, his personal life remains virtually unknown. In this study of Robinson and his photography, Howard Philips Smith takes an in-depth look at Robinson's early life in New Orleans, where he discovered his passion for painting, photography, and the Dixie Bohemian life of the French Quarter. A Sojourn in Paradise: Jack Robinson in 1950s New Orleans features more than one hundred photographs taken by the artist, accompanied by detailed commentary about Robinson's life in New Orleans and excerpts from interviews with the people who knew him when he lived there. Robinson's photographs of New Orleans reveal the genesis of two unique and fascinating facets of the city's history and culture: the creation of the first gay Carnival krewes who would make their own unique contribution to the rich cultural history of the city and the formation of the Orleans Gallery, one of the earliest centers of the contemporary art movement blossoming in 1950s America. This detailed study of Jack Robinson's early life and photography illustrates the contributions of a gifted, gay artist whose quiet spirit and constant interior struggle found refuge in New Orleans, the city where he was able to find himself, for a time, free from society's grip and open to exploring life on his own terms.

Junaluska - Oral Histories of a Black Appalachian Community (Paperback): Susan E Keefe Junaluska - Oral Histories of a Black Appalachian Community (Paperback)
Susan E Keefe
R926 Discovery Miles 9 260 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Junaluska is one of the oldest African American communities in western North Carolina and one of the few that has persisted into the modern era. After Emancipation, many former slaves in Watauga County became sharecroppers, were allowed to clear land and to keep a portion, or bought property outright, all in the segregated neighborhood on the hill overlooking the town of Boone, North Carolina. Land and home ownership have been crucial to the survival of this community, whose residents are closely interconnected as extended families and neighbors. Missionized by white Krimmer Mennonites in the early twentieth century, their church is one of a handful of African American Mennonite Brethren churches in the United States, and it provides one of the few avenues for leadership in the local black community. Susan Keefe has worked closely with members of the community in editing this book, which is based on three decades of participatory research. These life history narratives adapted from interviews with residents (born between 1885 and 1993) offer a people's history of the black experience in the southern mountains. Their stories provide a unique glimpse into the lives of African Americans in Appalachia during the 20th century--and a community determined to survive through the next.
