In the 1930s, photographer Dorothea Lange traveled the American
West documenting the experiences of those devastated by the Great
Depression. She wanted to use the power of the image to effect
political change, but even she could hardly have expected the
effect that a simple portrait of a worn-looking woman and her
children would have on history. This image, taken at a migrant
workers camp in Nipomo, California, would eventually come to be
seen as the very symbol of the Depression. The photograph helped
reveal the true cost of the disaster on human lives and shocked the
U.S. government into providing relief for the millions of other
families devastated by the Depression.
Over the past two hundred years German education policy and
practice has attracted interest in England. Policy makers have used
the 'German example' both to encourage change and development and
to warn against certain courses of action. This monograph provides
the first major analysis of the rich material from government
reports (including work by Matthew Arnold), the press, travel
accounts, memoirs, scholarly publications and the archives to
uncover the nature of the English fascination with education in
Germany, from 1800 to the end of the twentieth century. David
Phillips traces this story and uses recent work in theories of
educational policy 'borrowing' to analyze the reception of the
German experience and its impact on the development of English
education policy.

DREAMS series, discover the life of Queen Elizabeth II, the
longest-reigning monarch of modern times. Little Elizabeth loved

heiress to the throne. From that day on, she had to learn how to
one day be the queen. When she was only 13, World War Two broke out
across the globe. Elizabeth bravely served as an ambulance driver,
and after the war ended, she fell in love with and married the
charming Prince Philip. In 1952, she was crowned Queen of the
United Kingdom, and for the next 70 years she would serve as a
