The whole idea for this book was born out of frustration from my own horror stories with contractors, as well as everybody else's that I have learned about. Plenty of people have told me about a bad incident they have experienced with a contractor, which could have been avoided if the customer had been more informed. Trashing home improvement contractors is not the intention of this book. In the construction business, you have some good contractors as well as bad. The main goal of this book is to educate homeowners on some of the finer points of hiring a home improvement contractor. Ask the average homeowner what he or she knows about blueprints, building codes, or home improvement contracts, and I am sure you will not get a lot of answers. This would be similar to someone asking me-an electrician-about investment banking or bond trading. If you're not in the business, then how would you know? Whether I am buying a car or planning to travel, I always do my research prior to making a decision. There is no such thing as getting too much information. Home renovation guides are very popular and ubiquitous. What distinguishes my book from all the others is the amount of detailed information I provide on the do's and don't's as well as the strategies to use and the pitfalls to avoid when hiring a home improvement contractor. The readers of my book will become educated about the tools needed to successfully hire a contractor, while attempting to minimize the aggravation and disappointment that frequently accompanies a great number of home renovations. When a homeowner decides to renovate his or her home, he or she can always find plenty of books on home renovations. Most of these books detail a lot of information on the ideas and designs, with very few details on hiring and working with a contractor. Another popular source for hiring a contractor is through recommendations. Once again, you hire the contractor, and it is up to you to make sure that the contractor is doing everything that they are supposed to do. Working in the construction business as an electrician in New York for more than two decades, I have been involved in many facets of the business of industrial, commercial, and residential construction and renovation, ranging from private homes to office buildings, airports, hotels, and hospitals. My vast knowledge and experience in the construction industry and as a homeowner gives me this enormous opportunity to exhibit the tools necessary for homeowners to successfully hire a general contractor to renovate their home.
"Taming Your New Refrigerator" is best read before you buy the refrigerator. It is meant to be an aid to anyone who is going to buy a new refrigerator or who has questions about one just purchased. It contains suggestions about what to look for as well as what to avoid when buying a refrigerator. People who would find this book helpful include people buying a new refrigerator, people remodeling a kitchen, landlords, home economics teachers and perhaps realtors. Chapter topics include buying a refrigerator, making sure house is suitable and handling "no-cool" situations. The book can help you avoid mistakes I see every day as a refrigerator repair technician. It is the result of years of experience repairing and seeing the same mistakes in installation, purchasing and care day-after-day. Many of these mistakes result in service calls, which cost you, the consumer, directly or indirectly. My belief is that over the life of the refrigerator you will save a lot more than the cost of this book if you use the information it contains.

Are you tired of listening to the overcomplicated explanations on why the housing market collapsed? Are you wondering why our economy is struggling and what you can do to help? Are you questioning the government bailouts and wondering if they will work? Are you spending money you don't have? Are we, as a society, spending money that doesn't exist? If you answered yes to any of these questions, this book is for you The Simple Answer and Solution to our Housing and Economic Crisis is based on my personal experiences with the housing market's sharp rise and dramatic fall. I decided to write this book to discuss my views on our current economic crisis in simple, everyday terms. Several years ago, I made a few risky decisions that could have led to financial disaster. Thankfully, my decisions only taught me a hard earned lesson, but I know how easy it was, and still is to become one of the victims of the recent housing market collapse. From my personal experiences, I learned some valuable lessons. I don't have all the answers or information, but hope to share my ideas on the cause and possible solutions to our current economic crisis.
This book is about building a house in the southwestern part of the United States; though, there are many things which are in common to building a similar structure in other parts of the country. This author conducted two years of research before embarking upon such a venture. Additionally, for the following nine months, I filmed and photographed all aspects of the task of building the structure, including performing many tasks myself. Yet, despite that, it quickly became obvious that those who plan to either be an owner-builder or have a house built by others, need a book like this, because it is truly an eye-opener. In fact, it is a practical guide which provides the reader with invaluable information about the process to be followed (contained within are many images/illustrations to help the prospective house owner). The book examines best construction practices while exposing shoddy workmanship, costly shortcuts of convenience, communication and coordination problems, and the use of inferior building materials. The work also discusses some of the nuances unique to building in such states as Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and even parts of California. It is the intention of this author this will help those who seek to build a southwestern house avoid many pitfalls which lie ahead; because, this is a book I wish I could have had before I began the journey. The book also contains an index and a list of Recommended Service and Product Providers. If you are about to build or have a house built, please see the last page of the book titled SPECIAL OFFER REGISTRATION, because as a purchaser of this book, once you have registered, you will have an opportunity to speak with the author byphone for consultations or exchange e-mails regarding the construction of your house.

The author provides a meticulously detailed account of the TV station business from its virtual beginnings in the late 40's until 1976. It examines the details behind the FCC "freeze" on any new TV license grants in 1948 until the implementation of the "Sixth Order & Report," which transformed TV transmission standards in 1953, and the author's deep involvement in the solution. It tracks the history of the TV networks and their interaction. It follows the author's participation in the foundation of virtually every TV institution: The TV Code, the TV Bureau of Advertising, the TV Information Office, AMST, etc. It covers the conversion, by the author, of Taft Broadcasting Company from a troubled family group to the largest single group operator, including what was then (1963) the biggest dollar volume deal in the history of broadcasting. It treats in detail the succession of events that moved Taft from basically a CBS affiliate to an ABC affiliate, resulting in the rise of ABC to first place in prime time, and the fall of CBS for the first time from first to last, resulting in the firing of CBS president Jim Aubrey. We follow the acquisition by Taft of the Hanna-Barbera Cartoon empire, and the subsequent huge world-wide distribution income from TV animation and allied merchandising. In short, it is a compendium of everything of importance that happened in the world of TV for the thirty years before the ascendancy of cable, satellite distribution, and the other electronic marvels that have completely transformed the medium. |
