How to Build A Southwestern House (Paperback): D.B.A. Wendell V. Fountain How to Build A Southwestern House (Paperback)
D.B.A. Wendell V. Fountain
R1,325 Discovery Miles 13 250 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is about building a house in the southwestern part of the United States; though, there are many things which are in common to building a similar structure in other parts of the country. This author conducted two years of research before embarking upon such a venture. Additionally, for the following nine months, I filmed and photographed all aspects of the task of building the structure, including performing many tasks myself. Yet, despite that, it quickly became obvious that those who plan to either be an owner-builder or have a house built by others, need a book like this, because it is truly an eye-opener. In fact, it is a practical guide which provides the reader with invaluable information about the process to be followed (contained within are many images/illustrations to help the prospective house owner). The book examines best construction practices while exposing shoddy workmanship, costly shortcuts of convenience, communication and coordination problems, and the use of inferior building materials. The work also discusses some of the nuances unique to building in such states as Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and even parts of California. It is the intention of this author this will help those who seek to build a southwestern house avoid many pitfalls which lie ahead; because, this is a book I wish I could have had before I began the journey. The book also contains an index and a list of Recommended Service and Product Providers. If you are about to build or have a house built, please see the last page of the book titled SPECIAL OFFER REGISTRATION, because as a purchaser of this book, once you have registered, you will have an opportunity to speak with the author byphone for consultations or exchange e-mails regarding the construction of your house.

The Guesthouse (Hardcover): Wayne Berry The Guesthouse (Hardcover)
Wayne Berry
R898 Discovery Miles 8 980 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A woman of Quaker background from Pennsylvania meets a man of Mormon background from Wyoming and their relationship flouishes. Both have demanding and stressful careers which ultimately lead to burnout. When that stress threathens to adversely affect their relationship and marraige, they decide to quit both their jobs, move to the Caribbean, and do something they know nothing about by owning and managing a bed and breakfast guesthouse. This "running away to join the circus" proves duanting, difficult, surprising and rewarding, but not as financially successful as they might have liked. However, the success in terms of their personal relationship, as well as a myriad of relationships formed with local people and others from around the world, more than compensate for any disappointment from their lack of business acumen. What may have been a loss on one hand, results in a win in the long run.

FREEDOM FROM CLUTTER, CHAOS, AND DISORGANIZATIONBusy lives can be messy - bills, mail, and catalogs pile up; appointments, school activities, and kids' sports events need to be scheduled and attended; the endless clutter of clothing, toys, and belongings can threaten to take over any home. To the rescue come Alicia Rockmore and Sarah Welch - with a system that will get you organized without having to make everything perfect. "Everything (almost) In Its Place" presents a new approach to organizing that is adaptable to any home. It is flexible and effective but you are not required to color-coordinate your closets or be able to eat off of the kitchen floor. You will learn to let go of perfection, keep things neat enough based on what's important for you and your family, and get other people (husbands and kids) to pitch in so everything isn't always on Mom's shoulders. Loaded with effective strategies, "Everything (almost) In Its Place" will teach you to get organized "enough" to get things done, get to where you (and the family) need to go and still have time for some rest and relaxation.

My Home Renovation - What You Should Know Before You Hire a Home Improvement Contractor (Paperback): John J. Girschick My Home Renovation - What You Should Know Before You Hire a Home Improvement Contractor (Paperback)
John J. Girschick
R450 Discovery Miles 4 500 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The whole idea for this book was born out of frustration from my own horror stories with contractors, as well as everybody else's that I have learned about. Plenty of people have told me about a bad incident they have experienced with a contractor, which could have been avoided if the customer had been more informed. Trashing home improvement contractors is not the intention of this book. In the construction business, you have some good contractors as well as bad. The main goal of this book is to educate homeowners on some of the finer points of hiring a home improvement contractor. Ask the average homeowner what he or she knows about blueprints, building codes, or home improvement contracts, and I am sure you will not get a lot of answers. This would be similar to someone asking me-an electrician-about investment banking or bond trading. If you're not in the business, then how would you know? Whether I am buying a car or planning to travel, I always do my research prior to making a decision. There is no such thing as getting too much information. Home renovation guides are very popular and ubiquitous. What distinguishes my book from all the others is the amount of detailed information I provide on the do's and don't's as well as the strategies to use and the pitfalls to avoid when hiring a home improvement contractor. The readers of my book will become educated about the tools needed to successfully hire a contractor, while attempting to minimize the aggravation and disappointment that frequently accompanies a great number of home renovations. When a homeowner decides to renovate his or her home, he or she can always find plenty of books on home renovations. Most of these books detail a lot of information on the ideas and designs, with very few details on hiring and working with a contractor. Another popular source for hiring a contractor is through recommendations. Once again, you hire the contractor, and it is up to you to make sure that the contractor is doing everything that they are supposed to do. Working in the construction business as an electrician in New York for more than two decades, I have been involved in many facets of the business of industrial, commercial, and residential construction and renovation, ranging from private homes to office buildings, airports, hotels, and hospitals. My vast knowledge and experience in the construction industry and as a homeowner gives me this enormous opportunity to exhibit the tools necessary for homeowners to successfully hire a general contractor to renovate their home.

Taming Your New Refrigerator - The Book That Should've Come With Your Refrigerator! (Paperback): Mike Dobos Taming Your New Refrigerator - The Book That Should've Come With Your Refrigerator! (Paperback)
Mike Dobos
R277 Discovery Miles 2 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Taming Your New Refrigerator" is best read before you buy the refrigerator. It is meant to be an aid to anyone who is going to buy a new refrigerator or who has questions about one just purchased. It contains suggestions about what to look for as well as what to avoid when buying a refrigerator. People who would find this book helpful include people buying a new refrigerator, people remodeling a kitchen, landlords, home economics teachers and perhaps realtors. Chapter topics include buying a refrigerator, making sure house is suitable and handling "no-cool" situations. The book can help you avoid mistakes I see every day as a refrigerator repair technician. It is the result of years of experience repairing and seeing the same mistakes in installation, purchasing and care day-after-day. Many of these mistakes result in service calls, which cost you, the consumer, directly or indirectly. My belief is that over the life of the refrigerator you will save a lot more than the cost of this book if you use the information it contains.

R699 R618 Discovery Miles 6 180 Save R81 (12%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A freedom fighter of the 1956 Hungarian revolution, after over 40 years in the US, and his California-born wife, decide to return to his native land to live. What's more, they decide to purchase a dilapidated country house-with about 7 acres of land-perched atop a hill in the foothills of the Bakony Mountains, nestled in the middle of an ancient area the Romans called Pannonia. The house sits alone, set apart from the neighboring village of 1,200 souls. The couple is idealistic, brave and - some might say - idiotic to undertake such a task. Of course, the house needs to be renovated and made fit for habitation. Craftsmen and workers need to be found. The work needs supervision. As our hero and heroine are "absentee owners" (living mostly in California), they are people who could easily be taken advantage of by unscrupulous and greedy locals. Country folk often focus on strangers as exotic and wealthy - true or not - and this is especially the case when the "strangers" are viewed as "rich Americans."
The situation calls for caution and careful planning. Fortunately, a local "good Samaritan," in the form of a native and pillar of the community, befriends them, comes to their aid time and again, and becomes their guardian angel. Amid seeming chaos and very real trepidation, restoration and refurbishment begins. While progress is far from smooth and continuous, no major disasters occur. Local craftsmen are found who are ably kept in check by Anti, the guardian angel. The skirmishes are numerous and colorful, but the locals (who for some reason concoct the story that the house has been bought by a "famous American film producer"), gradually accept the interlopers.
As time passesand the owners spend more and more time on the property, boundaries come down and friendships are forged. There are invitations and counter-invitations issued and accepted. People offer their generous help with problems otherwise unsolvable. The house is completed. With the assistance of these new-found friends, the adventuresome newcomers plant a vineyard, and now spend over seven months a year in their new paradise. Life is good...

Hurricane Recovery - The Peoples' Village Plan (Paperback): Gordon Swanson Hurricane Recovery - The Peoples' Village Plan (Paperback)

R624 Discovery Miles 6 240 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

TRY OUT THE PLAN Help the city build the village that is large enough to hold all the people that have signed up for the recovery program. This is a work program so the people that are too old or handicapped should be cared for by the person responsible, or the city, in a health care environment. Set up a recovery committee and appoint a chairman, and the other officers that will be required. Ask the city to provide everything in equipment and supplies for everyone to use in rebuilding. Contact all the insurance companies and similar financial agencies that have contracts with the people in the block. Each person can contact his or her agent as first contact, and see what their insurance, if any, will cover for rebuilding or replacing their houses. LOCATE THE MONEY Join with the city controller and locate where the recovery funds are. Each land owner should have his insurance so this should be accounted for and totaled. The owners without insurance should agree to pay what they can to repair or rebuild their houses. When all these costs are labeled and added up, the cost for house rebuilding should be known. The city should estimate the cost of all the block clean up, and roads, that they are responsible for and add this to the sum available. Next is the disaster funds the city has been supplied by the state and federal recovery programs that are still available, and the end result will be the estimated cost to rebuild the nine blocks, take care of the people in a low cost village, and pay a wage to the workers. RECOVERY NO LONGER A DREAM The village is then erected and the people moved in. The people put to work along with the city's skilled workers, equipment, and supplies, and the area cleaned up and people moved back in as per the plan. This is only a test of the plan.. Assuming everything works as planned, more blocks are recovered in the same manor but in larger amounts until the city is back to normal. When the other people see that blocks can be recovered at an expense the owners, insurance companies, and city can afford, it should be easy to get other areas to agree to a slight incontinence to get their places back to normal again.

History of U.S. Television - A Personal Reminscence (Paperback): Lawrence H. Rogers Ii History of U.S. Television - A Personal Reminscence (Paperback)
Lawrence H. Rogers Ii
R579 Discovery Miles 5 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The author provides a meticulously detailed account of the TV station business from its virtual beginnings in the late 40's until 1976. It examines the details behind the FCC "freeze" on any new TV license grants in 1948 until the implementation of the "Sixth Order & Report," which transformed TV transmission standards in 1953, and the author's deep involvement in the solution. It tracks the history of the TV networks and their interaction. It follows the author's participation in the foundation of virtually every TV institution: The TV Code, the TV Bureau of Advertising, the TV Information Office, AMST, etc. It covers the conversion, by the author, of Taft Broadcasting Company from a troubled family group to the largest single group operator, including what was then (1963) the biggest dollar volume deal in the history of broadcasting. It treats in detail the succession of events that moved Taft from basically a CBS affiliate to an ABC affiliate, resulting in the rise of ABC to first place in prime time, and the fall of CBS for the first time from first to last, resulting in the firing of CBS president Jim Aubrey. We follow the acquisition by Taft of the Hanna-Barbera Cartoon empire, and the subsequent huge world-wide distribution income from TV animation and allied merchandising. In short, it is a compendium of everything of importance that happened in the world of TV for the thirty years before the ascendancy of cable, satellite distribution, and the other electronic marvels that have completely transformed the medium.

You open the kitchen cabinet, reach for the jar of peanut butter, and there on its top are mice droppings. What's the safest means to be rid of the mice? In "Ask the Bugman," Board Certified Entomologist Richard Fagerlund offers advice on pest control drawn from answers to commonly asked questions in his nationally distributed newspaper column. For mice, live traps are best, using oatmeal as bait. Never use poisons or glue boards. He also encourages preventive measures to plug the holes mice use as entrances.

With thirty-years' experience in pest control, Fagerlund offers suggestions for controlling nearly fifty common (and a few not so common) pests found in and around the home. The questions are divided into categories including disruptive pests, destructive pests, biters and stingers, reptiles and rodents, and garden and household bugs. But what separates "Ask the Bugman" from other such books is its environmental ethic, which is carefully laid out in the principles of Integrated Pest Management (IPM). Typical IPM methods include habitat modification, improved sanitation, and the use of less-toxic, pest-specific baits. As alternatives to harmful chemicals, he counsels use of home remedies, provides a number of these, and includes others sent in by readers of his column. Ten original sketches of common household pests give readers an appreciation of their appearance.
