Public Sector Entrepreneurship - U.S. Technology and Innovation Policy (Hardcover): Dennis Patrick Leyden, Albert N Link Public Sector Entrepreneurship - U.S. Technology and Innovation Policy (Hardcover)
Dennis Patrick Leyden, Albert N Link
R2,234 Discovery Miles 22 340 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Public sector entrepreneurship refers to innovative public policy initiatives that generate greater economic prosperity. These initiatives can transform a status quo economic environment into one that is more conducive to economic units engaging in creative and innovative activities in the face of uncertainty. Public Sector Entrepreneurship traces the historical development of the concepts of private and public sector entrepreneurship and their connection to the separate notions of risk and uncertainty. Based on a formal conceptualization of these notions, the book illustrates throughout public sector entrepreneurship in practice using examples from U.S. technology and innovation policy. Technology policy-policy to enhance the application of new knowledge, learned through science, to some known problem-and innovation policy-policy to enhance the commercialization of a technology-are quintessential examples of the public sector recognizing and exploiting opportunities to bring about change and efficiency. Using this concept of public sector entrepreneurship as the lens to view the Bayh-Dole Act of 1980, the Stevenson-Wydler Act of 1980, the R&E Tax Credit of 1981, Small Business Innovation Development Act of 1982, the National Cooperative Research Act of 1984, and the Omnibus Trade and Competitiveness Act of 1988 affords us the ability to find elements of commonality among these policies and to discuss their impact on the U.S. economy from the perspective of entrepreneurial action.

For the past number of years, academic entrepreneurship has become one of the most widely studied topics in the entrepreneurship literature. Yet, despite all the research that has been conducted to date, there has not been a systematic attempt to analyze critically the factors which lie behind successful business spin-offs from university research. In this book, a group of academic thought-leaders in the field of technology transfer examine a number of areas critical to the promotion of start-ups on campus. Through a series of case studies, they examine current policies, structures, program initiatives and practices of fourteen international universities to develop a theory of successful academic entrepreneurship, with the aim of helping other universities to enhance the quality of their university transfer programs. This book is a valuable resource for university research administrators, technology transfer office professionals, academic entrepreneurs, incubator management officials, R&D managers, venture capitalists, researchers, policymakers, and others involved in the commercialization of intellectual property.

Investing in Science - Social Cost-Benefit Analysis of Research Infrastructures (Hardcover): Massimo Florio Investing in Science - Social Cost-Benefit Analysis of Research Infrastructures (Hardcover)
Massimo Florio
R1,672 R1,543 Discovery Miles 15 430 Save R129 (8%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

A proposal for using cost-benefit analysis to evaluate the socioeconomic impact of public investment in large scientific projects. Large particle accelerators, outer space probes, genomics platforms: all are scientific enterprises managed through the new form of the research infrastructure, in which communities of scientists collaborate across nations, universities, research institutions, and disciplines. Such large projects are often publicly funded, with no accepted way to measure the benefits to society of these investments. In this book, Massimo Florio suggests the use of cost-benefit analysis (CBA) to evaluate the socioeconomic impact of public investment in large and costly scientific projects. The core concept of CBA of any infrastructure is to undertake the consistent intertemporal accounting of social welfare effects using the available information. Florio develops a simple framework for such accounting in the research infrastructure context and then offers a systematic analysis of the benefits in terms of the social agents involved. He measures the benefits to scientists, students, and postdoctoral researchers; the effect on firms of knowledge spillovers; the benefits to users of information technology and science-based innovation; the welfare effects on the general public of cultural services provided by RIs; and the willingness of taxpayers to fund scientific knowledge creation. Finally, Florio shows how these costs and benefits can be expressed in the form of stochastic net present value and other summary indicators.

How do you come up with ideas that change the world? ________________ This bold and inspiring new book argues that everyone who made leaps of creative genius - whether to cure Ebola or circumnavigate the world in a hot air balloon - had one thing in common; they all thought like ALIENs. Distilling over a decade of research into a fascinating journey through history, science and business, Bouquet, Barsoux and Wade reveal that there are five patterns of thinking that distinguish true innovators from the rest of us; Attention, Levitation, Imagination, Experimentation and Navigation. But, crucially, they show how utilising this model will help you solve any complex problem and come up with ground-breaking ideas of your own. ________________ 'Stuck in innovation stagnation? Read this brilliant book, and you'll break free from it' Rolf Dobelli, author of the million-copy bestseller The Art of Thinking Clearly 'A sharp critique of the conventional wisdom around innovation with thought-provoking advice for how to do it better' Jake Knaap, New York Times-bestselling author of Sprint

Cluster Genesis - Technology-Based Industrial Development (Paperback): Pontus Braunerhjelm, Maryann P. Feldman Cluster Genesis - Technology-Based Industrial Development (Paperback)
Pontus Braunerhjelm, Maryann P. Feldman
R1,858 Discovery Miles 18 580 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Clusters - regional concentrations of related firms and organizations - are seen as being an important element of economic growth and innovation. But there is little understanding of how clusters come into existence, and little guidance provided on the role of policies that are conducive to the formation of clusters.
Cluster Genesis focuses on these early origins of clusters. The case histories of well-known, established clusters, as well as more recently-developed clusters are discussed, including:
DT The Hollywood motion picture cluster,
DT Silicon Valley,
DT Boston and San Francisco biotech regions,
DT The Biotech industry in China,
DT Medicon Valley in Scandinavia,
DT The Irish ITC sector.
Leading scholars contribute chapters examining cluster genesis, the divergent processes by which clusters arise, how multinationals contribute to cluster development, and how economic development policy may promote or hinder cluster genesis.
Cluster Genesis uses a variety o methodological perspectives, examines a range of policy options, and draws on a number of rich case histories, and will be key reading for academics, researchers, and students of Economics, Innovation, Sociology, Geography, and Management Studies, as well as economic development officials and policy makers.

The Economics of the European Patent System - IP Policy for Innovation and Competition (Paperback): Dominique. Guellec, Bruno... The Economics of the European Patent System - IP Policy for Innovation and Competition (Paperback)
Dominique. Guellec, Bruno Van Pottelsberghe De La Potterie
R1,665 Discovery Miles 16 650 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Why does society allow, or even encourage, private appropriation of inventions? When do patents encourage competition, when do they hamper it? How should society design the compromise between the interest of the inventor and the interest of the users of patented inventions? How should the patent system adapt to new technological areas?
These questions and many more are addressed by the authors in this groundbreaking analysis of the economics behind the European patent system. Beginning with the history and principles of the patent system, the book then examines the economic effects of patenting on innovation and the diffusion of technology and growth. Throughout the book the theory and the reality are discussed alongside real world examples and comparison between the European, USA, and Japanese patent systems.

International Competitiveness and Technological Change (Paperback): Marcela Miozzo, Vivien Walsh International Competitiveness and Technological Change (Paperback)
Marcela Miozzo, Vivien Walsh
R1,870 Discovery Miles 18 700 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Technological change is central in explaining industrial leadership, but the relationships and interactions between scientific research, industrial innovation, and competitiveness are neither clear nor straightforward. Public research funding and business strategy dictate to a significant extent the manner in, and extent to which innovation occurs within the economy. This book analyses the role of technological change in the competitiveness of firms and national economies. This includes an examination of: * the roles of R&D spending, and the organisational and technological capabilities of firms in the encouragement of innovation; * the way institutions in various nations differ in the way in which they encourage - or discourage - innovation; and the way in which different industrial sectors provide - or fail to provide - incentives to innovate; and * the ways in which trade, the operation of multinationals and international trade negotiations influence national production and innovation systems . The book combines insights of innovation scholars with those from business history, sociology and economics, in exploring the relation between organizational structures and the process of innovation. It places the analysis of innovation within an international perspective and gives historical and current examples of the interaction between organisational and technological capabilities, industrial and innovation policies and economic performance. Examples are drawn from a range of sectors (services, pharmaceuticals, construction, chemicals) and a range of countries (including the UK and other European countries, the USA, East Asia and Latin America).

Getting It Right - R&D Methods for Science and Engineering (Hardcover): Peter Bock Getting It Right - R&D Methods for Science and Engineering (Hardcover)
Peter Bock
R3,234 Discovery Miles 32 340 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Over the past decade, the author has met with directors of R&D departments in large industrial firms, who are frustrated by the lack of coherent and consistent methodologies in R&D projects. As a direct result the author was asked to design and present a seminar to provide R&D engineers and scientists a standard methodology for conducting coherent, rigorous, comprehensible, and consistent R&D projects. The author also realized that this training should be included in engineering and science curricula in universities and colleges. To this end, he designed and presented a pilot course for his department that was received enthusiastically by students who participated. This course has now become a required course for all doctoral students in the author's department.
This book has been designed to provide professional engineers, scientists, and students with a consistent and practical framework for the rigorous conduct and communication of complex research and development projects. Although courses and training in research methods are common and generally required of social science professionals, a vast majority of physical scientists and engineers have had no formal classroom training or on-the-job mentoring on proper procedures for research methods. Getting It Right emphasizes the comprehensive analysis of project problems, requirements, and objectives; the use of standard and consistent terminology and procedures; the design of rigorous and reproducible experiments; the appropriate reduction and interpretation of project results; and the effective communication of project design, methods, results, and conclusions.
Presents a standard methodology for conducting coherent, rigorous, comprehensible, and consistent R&D projects
Thoroughly researched to appeal to the needs of R&D engineers and scientists in industry
Will also appeal to students of engineering and science

Nanotechnology - Molecular Speculations on Global Abundance (Paperback, New): B.C. Crandall Nanotechnology - Molecular Speculations on Global Abundance (Paperback, New)
B.C. Crandall
R2,159 Discovery Miles 21 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Technology is becoming molecularly precise. Nanotechnology, otherwise known as molecular engineering, will soon create effective machines as small as DNA. This capacity to manipulate matter -- to program matter -- with atomic precision will utterly change the economic, ecological, and cultural fabric of our lives. This book, which is accessible to a broad audience while providing references to the technical literature, presents a wide range of potential applications of this new material technology.

The first chapter introduces the basic concepts of molecular engineering and demonstrates that several mutually reinforcing trends in current research are leading directly into a world of surprisingly powerful molecular machines. Nine original essays on specific applications follow the introductory chapter. The first section presents applications of nanotechnology that interact directly with the molecular systems of the human body. The second presents applications that function, for the most part, outside the body. The final section details the mechanisms of a universal human-machine interface and the operation of an extremely high resolution display system.

Designing Engineers (Paperback, New Ed): Louis L Bucciarelli Designing Engineers (Paperback, New Ed)
Louis L Bucciarelli
R1,296 Discovery Miles 12 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Designing Engineers describes the evolution of three disparate projects: an x-ray inspection system for airports, a photoprint machine, and a residential photovoltaic energy system. The products of engineering design are everywhere, but who or what determines their form and function? Their surfaces are usually cold, seemingly objective, as if they existed outside of history of the technologies that are so much a part of our lives. Written by a practicing engineer, Designing Engineers yields clues to this mystery by probing deeply into the everyday world of engineering. In doing so, it reveals significant discrepancies between our ideal image of design as an instrumental process and the reality of design as a historically situated social process that is full of uncertainty and ambiguity. Designing Engineers describes the evolution of three disparate projects: an x-ray inspection system for airports, a photoprint machine, and a residential photovoltaic energy system. In each case, we are taken through the hallways and into the meeting rooms of the company to watch over the shoulders of engineers as they engage in the manifold individual and collective work that goes into designing a new product. Louis Bucciarelli was a consultant to one project and participated in the design process for the other two. In all three projects he examines both object - the way participants understood how things work - and process - the way they go about designing. What he learns is that engineering design is a social process that involves constant negotiation among many parties, not just engineers but marketing people, research scientists, accountants, and customers as well. One of the strengths of the book is the way Bucciarelli uses the very language of engineering discourse to uncover the many levels at which negotiation takes place. Designing, it turns out, is as much about agreeing on definitions as it is about producing "hard" artifacts.
