Though his life was relatively short, Christian Ernest Dior's
seismic influence on the fashion world ensures his name lives on as
one of the most successful and celebrated designers of all time.
Using the rationing restrictions of wartime, he created designs
that extenuated the female figure and released the women of the
world from the restrictive, dull clothing that restricted rather
than enhanced femininity. It was Dior's sudden prominence on the
world stage that restored Paris' reputation as the epicentre of the
fashion world. To wear a Dior item of clothing, was to wear the
best of the best. His post-War collection was described as a
completely 'new look' by the editor-in-chief of Harper's Bazaar,
one of the world's most powerful style magazines. The description
was adopted and quickly became a fashion movement, with Dior's 'New
Look' leading the way and even stealing the limelight from
compatriot Gabrielle 'Coco' Chanel. The Little Guide to Christian
Dior shows how despite coming from a wealthy background with
powerful allies, Christian Dior may not have had to scrap his way
to the top as Coco Chanel did, but his talent is no less worthy and
his legacy as one of the world's greatest designers is no less
deserving. 'My dream? To make women happier and more beatiiful.' As
seen on Living in Fifties Fashion, 'Salute Mr Dior'
Design consists of the solution proposals put forward by the
designer for the target audience. The changing needs of the target
audience cause the designer to change the solutions. Although the
act of designing seems to take place in the triangle of
mass-object-designer, it is also affected by the period it is in,
independently of these components. The changing perception of taste
with the change of the period, the adoption of fast consumption,
the advancement of technology, the attempt to establish the real
world in the virtual with this progress, and the widespread use of
social media causes different effects on different user groups.
Some users, who feel this effect, adapt to it and try to meet their
needs in parallel, while the other part shows a conscious
resistance to this effect and prefers to maintain a perception of
"liking" from the past. It is important to share these views to
break the resistance and ensure the construction of a new agenda.
Contemporary Manifests on Design Thinking and Practice reveals the
current problems, practices, and research of the period in design
disciplines. It gives readers the opportunity to see the impact of
the ever-present change and transformation in design as a whole.
Covering topics such as alternative design models, social media
interaction, and urban social sustainability, this premier
reference source is a dynamic resource for designers, architects,
industrial designers, business leaders and executives, students and
faculty of higher education, librarians, researchers, and
academicians.
Bestselling author Victoria Finlay spins us round the globe in a vibrant exploration of cloth through the ages.
She beats the inner bark of trees into cloth in Papua New Guinea, fails to handspin cotton in Guatemala, visits tweed weavers at their homes in Harris, and has lessons in patchwork-making in Gee''s Bend, Alabama. And through it all she uncovers the hidden histories of fabric: how and why people have made it, worn it, invented it and made symbols of it.
Interlaced with Victoria''s own story of grief and recovery, Fabric is a lush patchwork of travel, history, memoir and culture - an unforgettable look into how we have made fabric, and how it has made us.

A timely celebration of British design legend Sir Paul Smith and
his one-of-a-kind creativity
This innovative book captures the unique spirit of British fashion icon
Sir Paul Smith through 50 objects chosen by Sir Paul himself for the
inspiration they have provided him over the years – from a wax plate of
spaghetti and a Dieter Rams radio to a Mario Bellini Cab chair and a
bicycle seat.
Each object has impacted his worldview, his creative process, and his
adherence to a design approach that’s always imbued with distinctly
British wit and eccentricity. The book covers subjects as varied as
breaking down the formality of wearing a suit, the importance of wit,
and the benefits of remaining independent in an increasingly
monopolized world, and includes personal contributions – handwritten
notes, a sketch, or photograph – from such fashion and design
heavyweights as Manolo Blahnik, Inès de la Fressange, Martin Parr, and
John Pawson.
Updated with a fresh new fabric cover featuring the brand’s signature
stripe and a brand-new preface written by Sir Paul especially for this
edition, Paul Smith provides the ultimate insight into one of the
fashion world’s most-loved creators.
From its founding in Florence in 1921 as luggage supplier to the
elite to its modern standing as purveyor of cult accessories and
couture, the house of Gucci is a titan of the luxury fashion world.
Over the last century, Gucci's signature leather goods and decadent
garments have elegantly combined the understated with the opulent,
united under the covetable double G logo. Little Book of Gucci
tells the story of the brand's beginnings as a luxury luggage and
equestrian outfitter, recounting how the family overcame rifts and
wartime hardship to be reborn as a giant of 1990s haute couture
and, under Alessandro Michele's current stewardship, made its mark
on streetwear and a new generation of fans. Over 100 gorgeously
curated images showcase Gucci's edgy yet sensual designs,
confirming its place as the most influential label of our times.
A unique and comprehensive resource for student and professional
furniture designers, providing in-depth answers to their questions
about aesthetics, function, materials, manufacturing and
sustainability. In this second edition Stuart Lawson emphasizes the
principles of a circular economy and what this means for furniture
design and consumption. He considers the latest technological
developments such as 3-D printing and the use of innovative materials
such as bioplastics. He also examines the capabilities and potential of
CAD-based design optimization, AI and machine learning-driven
generative design processes.
The book features case studies on pioneering, contemporary and
historical designers and includes an illustrated directory of materials
and manufacturing processes.
