Attempts at General Union - A Study in British Trade Union History 1818-1834 (Hardcover): G. Cole Attempts at General Union - A Study in British Trade Union History 1818-1834 (Hardcover)
G. Cole
R4,780 Discovery Miles 47 800 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume traces the attempts made after the Napoleonic Wars to link up all the numerous local and sectional Trade Societies into a single comprehensive General Trades Union' -- attempts which culminated in the short-lived Grand National Consolidated Trades Union formed under Robert Owen's influence in 1833. Based on materials not previously used by historians, this book throws new light on the development of Trade Unionism, particularly in the North of England, during these critical years.

Maintaining Social Well-Being and Meaningful Work in a Highly Automated Job Market (Hardcover): Shalin Hai-Jew Maintaining Social Well-Being and Meaningful Work in a Highly Automated Job Market (Hardcover)
Shalin Hai-Jew
R5,969 Discovery Miles 59 690 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In mainstream media, there has been wide discussion on what the world will look like when the artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics incursions into traditional human work result in fewer jobs in manufacturing, service industries, and other domains. Turning to automation is a practical endeavor for corporations because of the efficiencies and increased performance it fosters, but these changes have a major impact on humanity. The resulting lack of work has been linked to social ills and human failure to thrive. Maintaining Social Well-Being and Meaningful Work in a Highly Automated Job Market is a pivotal reference source that explores how the world will re-shape as one with less demand for human labor and how to potentially balance how people engage as part-workers and as consumers of others' creations. Additionally, the book looks at how people will co-create meaningful lives at micro, meso, and macro levels. While highlighting topics such as mobile technology, positive psychological capital, and human capital, this book is ideally designed for technologists, AI designers, robotics designers, policymakers, social engineers, CIOs, politicians, executives, economists, researchers, and students.

The World of Labour - A Discussion of the Present and Future of Trade Unionism (Hardcover): G. Cole The World of Labour - A Discussion of the Present and Future of Trade Unionism (Hardcover)
G. Cole
R5,800 Discovery Miles 58 000 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Cole saw the trade unions as being critical to progress, but to realise their role they needed to change and the issue of trade union structure therefore became fundamental. He considered in this volume that trade union structure was a central problem of the labour movement -- he described British trade unionism as a movement bereft of ideas and policy. He discusses the evolution in the trade unions to cover not only wages and working conditions but the organisation and control of industry.

Renewing International Labour Studies (Hardcover): Marcus Taylor Renewing International Labour Studies (Hardcover)
Marcus Taylor
R4,637 Discovery Miles 46 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume seeks to re-energise the paradigm of the New International Labour Studies by detailing how struggles over the construction, reproduction, utilisation and restructuring of labour forces are the contested social foundations upon which the global economy stands. Through a combination of theoretical works and a series of case studies, the volume highlights the cutting edge of international labour studies. Its expands on three pivotal areas of study within the discipline:1) the social construction of new labour forces across an expanding international division of labour; 2) the self-organising potential of workers, particularly within non-traditional sectors; and 3) the possibilities for transborder labour movements to help address the asymmetrical power relationships between globalised capital and localised labour. In addressing these themes, the volume helps explain not only how the contemporary international division of labour is produced and reproduced, but also the strengths and limits to current attempts to overcome its unequal and divisive nature. This book was published as a special issue of Third World Quarterly.

The Brave New World of European Labor - European Trade Unions at the Millennium (Hardcover): Andrew Martin, George Ross The Brave New World of European Labor - European Trade Unions at the Millennium (Hardcover)
Andrew Martin, George Ross
R3,142 Discovery Miles 31 420 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

European union movements played a central role in promoting a "European model of society" -- a humane industrial relations system, high labor standards, generous welfare states, and collective political representation -- which reached its pinnacle in the post-World Was II era. The recent shift to lower growth, rising unemployment, renewed European integration, neo-liberalism, and globalization has challenged this "European Model" and the unions' place in it. These essays, written by some of the leading scholars in the field, examine responses of six major European union movements to the dramatic changes in economic and political conditions in the last two decades. They are the result of a group research effort and are based on a common framework which lends it quite an exceptional coherence. Its value is enhanced by the editors' conclusion that reflects upon new union positions and their implications, in particular the most important question of what will happen to the 'European model of society' in consequence.

Marching with Dr. King - Ralph Helstein and the United Packinghouse Workers of America (Hardcover): Cyril Robinson Marching with Dr. King - Ralph Helstein and the United Packinghouse Workers of America (Hardcover)
Cyril Robinson
R1,479 Discovery Miles 14 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book shows how a Jewish lawyer utilized his philosophy of prophetic Judaism (a belief in social justice) and his training as a lawyer to become the head of a trade union that formulated policies embodying these social beliefs, bringing many benefits to its members. In 1946, Ralph Helstein was the general counsel for the United Packinghouse Workers Union (UPWA), which had become a predominantly black worker organization. At the time there was a divisive left-right split in the union. As the only individual both sides trusted, Helstein was elected president of the union, thus beginning an era of positive change for the UPWA and its workers. Beyond Helstein's efforts for the UPWA, Marching with Dr. King: Ralph Helstein and the United Packinghouse Workers of America also examines the involvement of Helstein in the civil rights movement, his personal association with Martin Luther King, Jr., and how his actions as union president championed the rights of African Americans, women, and even an immigrant group outside the United States-the sugar workers in Puerto Rico. This text presents a unique perspective on the life of a labor leader, revealing the connection between Helstein's religious and philosophical ideas with his leadership of the UPWA union. Presents information based largely upon original interviews conducted by the author, the research of historians, and original documents from the UPWA archives Provides a chronological history of the union movement through Helstein's lifetime from the 1920s to the 1980s Includes family photographs and photos of Helstein in various union activity settings such as strikes and meetings

Trade Unions in a Neoliberal World - British Trade Unions under New Labour (Hardcover): Gary Daniels, John McIlroy Trade Unions in a Neoliberal World - British Trade Unions under New Labour (Hardcover)
Gary Daniels, John McIlroy
R5,509 Discovery Miles 55 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Trade Unions in a Neoliberal World is the first book to provide readers with an authoritative and comprehensive assessment of the impact of New Labour governments on employment relations and trade unions. This innovative text locates changes in industrial politics since the 1990s in the development of globalization and the worldwide emergence of neoliberalism. In this rigorous but readable volume, a team of experienced and respected contributors explain in detail how the story has unfolded. This book looks at all aspects of New Labour's policies in relation to employment relations and trade unionism. The first half of Trade Unions in a Neoliberal World presents an overview of industrial politics, the evolution of New Labour and an anatomy of contemporary trade unionism. It discusses relations between the Labour Party and the unions and the response of trade unionists to political and economic change. The second part contains chapters on legislation, partnership, organizing, training, strikes and perspectives on Europe.

Trade Unions and their Members - Studies in Union Democracy and Organization (Hardcover): Edmund Heery, Patricia Fosh Trade Unions and their Members - Studies in Union Democracy and Organization (Hardcover)
Edmund Heery, Patricia Fosh; Heeryd
R2,656 Discovery Miles 26 560 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The issue of trade union democracy has been the subject of considerable controversy in recent years. The government has pursued a policy designed in part to 'give unions back to their members' and the decline in the numbers of employees joining unions raises the question of whether trade unionism is losing its relevance. This book presents research papers which deal with these issues and reveals how the unions are adopting to legislative and other changes as they enter the 1990s.

A Professional Professoriate - Unionization, Bureaucratization and the AAUP (Hardcover): Philo A. Hutcheson A Professional Professoriate - Unionization, Bureaucratization and the AAUP (Hardcover)
Philo A. Hutcheson
R2,152 Discovery Miles 21 520 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Starting with the question "How have professors and educational institutions responded to pressures to be professional yet act bureaucratically," Philo Hutcheson uses federal and AAUP records and surveys and blends historical research and sociological analysis to develop a full understanding of the problem. With the dramatic expansion of the professoriate following World War II came increasing tensions between the professor's perceived traditional status as an autonomous professional on the one hand and new role as a bureaucrat subject to institutional authority and responsible for departmental and committee assignments on the other. In this increasingly conflicted realm, the AAUP functioned as a key intermediary, dealing with such issues as tenure, salary, contracts, and even faculty strikes.
Hutcheson examines how tensions between the requirements of institutional bureaucracies and the norms of the academic profession resulted in contentiousness and conflict within the national AAUP, between administrators and faculty members on individual campuses, within the ranks of faculties themselves, and even deep in the consciences of many concerned individuals. The book analyzes the association's ability to respond effectively and to balance the values of collegial representation with the powers of collective bargaining. It thus offers a detailed and authoritative examination of the AAUP's search for ways to sustain professionalism while dealing with the fundamental changes in the nature of the professoriate in the post-World War II era.

When Strikes Make Sense-And Why - Lessons from Third Republic French Coal Miners (Hardcover, 1993 ed.): Samuel Cohn When Strikes Make Sense-And Why - Lessons from Third Republic French Coal Miners (Hardcover, 1993 ed.)
Samuel Cohn
R2,797 Discovery Miles 27 970 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Social scientists have not helped the working class make strategic deci sions. Unionists need to know how to carry on industrial conflict so as to provide concrete economic benefits for their members. Should unions strike or not strike? Should losses be avoided at all costs, or can unions afford to take chances? Does economism gut the class power of workers or provide a pragmatic strategy for increasing workers' wage gains? We can say with great confidence that workers should join unions; there is now an exhaustive and compelling literature demonstrating that union membership provides a wide variety of economic benefits. We can say that corporatist class compromises lower income but increase job security and overall employment. Beyond that, however, we cannot say much. In particular, we can do little to advise particular unions in partic ular fixed institutional and political environments how they should han dle the microtactics of individual confrontations. The United Farm Work ers do not need a speech about the miracle of the Swedish industrial relations system. They need to know whether they should strike or not strike, and how their tactics should change if rival Teamsters come into the field. Unfortunately, medical research often has to start with rabbits be fore it proceeds to humans, and so it is with research in industrial conflict. The realistic prospects of doing a large sample analysis of con temporary American wage settlements that simultaneously estimates the effects of union tactics and economic factors are poor."

Adjudicating Employment Rights - A Cross-National Approach (Hardcover, New): S. Corby, P. Burgess Adjudicating Employment Rights - A Cross-National Approach (Hardcover, New)
S. Corby, P. Burgess
R1,859 Discovery Miles 18 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

With the decline of collective regulation and the mushrooming of statutory rights in the developed world over the past half-century, individual workplace disputes are now often resolved by the civil courts, by labour courts, by administrative bodies or by arbitration. The nature and operation of these institutions, however, have been largely ignored in the employment literature and this book, by focusing on the institutional architecture itself, fills this gap.
Adjudicating Employment Rights looks at the institutions in ten countries across its chapters: seven European countries, including France, Germany, Italy and Great Britain, as well as countries outside Europe, such as the USA, South Africa and New Zealand. In addition, this book compares these countries' employment adjudication regimes through descriptive comparisons, the analysis of different institutions using well-known theoretical frameworks, and the evaluation of these countries' institutions against a number of yardsticks.

R1,586 Discovery Miles 15 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Based on the primary analysis of the 2004 Workplace Employment Relations Survey (WERS 2004), this is the fifth book in the series which began in 1980, and which is considered to be one of the most authoritative sources of information on employment relations in Great Britain. Interviews were conducted with managers and employee representatives in over 3,000 workplaces, and over 20,000 employees returned a self-completion questionnaire. This survey links the views from these three parties, providing a truly integrated picture of employment relations. This book provides a descriptive mapping of employment relations, examining the principal features of the structures, practices and outcomes of workplace employment relations. The reader can explore differences according to the characteristics of the workplace and organization, including workplace size, industrial sector and ownership. Current debates are examined in detail, including an assessment of the impact of the Labour Government's programme of employment relations reform. A key reference from a respected and important institution, this book is a valuable 'sourcebook' for students, academics and practitioners in the fields of employee relations, human resource management, organizational behaviour and sociology. Champions of Equality - Trade unions and LGBT rights in Britain (Paperback): Peter Purton Champions of Equality - Trade unions and LGBT rights in Britain (Paperback)
Peter Purton; Foreword by Frances O'Grady, Maria Exall
R621 Discovery Miles 6 210 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

There is a big hole in the history of the LGBT movement in Britain. Each step towards equality for LGBT people, every positive move in public opinion, was the result of campaigning. But while individuals and lobby groups loudly promote their role in the victories, one major player has been written out of this history: the unions. This book fills the gap. From the first strike action organised by trade union members to save the job of a victimised gay colleague in the 1970s, through the mutual solidarity of Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners, to the Trades Union Congress taking the initiative to save London Pride in 2012, and much more, trade unions have contributed immensely to the successes achieved, all the while protecting jobs and securing equality for thousands of LGBT working people. Peter Purton was the TUC's first LGBT officer. His book, of interest to everyone interested in equality and trade union history, reveals how LGBT trade union members organised to win recognition, then support, and how trade unions supported the struggles of LGBT communities in Britain and across the world. This is an inspiring tale, and in the dangerous world of the twenty-first century, it is a warning call to the LGBT community and those supporting it, to wake up to new threats, to remember how past victories were achieved. The labour movement has much potential as an active participant in the unfinished fight for equality, but this book shows the need for mutual engagement to make change possible.

Trade Unions in Renewal - A Comparative Study (Hardcover): Peter Fairbrother, Charlotte Yates Trade Unions in Renewal - A Comparative Study (Hardcover)
Peter Fairbrother, Charlotte Yates
R5,773 Discovery Miles 57 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This comprehensive survey of continuity and change in trade unions looks at five primarily English-speaking countries: the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK. The authors consider the recent re-examination by trade union movements of the basis of union organization and activity in the face of a harsher economic and political climate. One of the impetuses for this re-examination has been the recent history of unions in the USA. American models of renewal have inspired Australia, New Zealand and the UK, while Canada has undergone a cautious examination of the US model with an attempt to develop a distinctive approach. This book aims to provide a thorough grounding for informed discussion and debate about the position and place of trade unions in modern economies.
