In 1967, a twenty-five-year-old refugee named Bashir Khairi
traveled from the Palestinian hill town of Ramallah to Ramla,
Israel, with a goal: to see the beloved stone house with the lemon
tree in its backyard that he and his family had been forced to
leave nineteen years earlier. When he arrived, he was greeted by
one of its new residents: Dalia Eshkenazi Landau, a
nineteen-year-old Israeli college student whose family had fled
Europe following the Holocaust. She had lived in that house since
she was eleven months old. On the stoop of this shared house, Dalia
and Bashir began a surprising friendship, forged in the aftermath
of war and later tested as political tensions ran high and Israelis
and Palestinians each asserted their own right to live on this
land. Adapted from the award-winning adult book and based on Sandy
Tolan's extensive research and reporting, The Lemon Tree is a
deeply personal story of two people seeking hope, transformation,
and home.
This children's book on the life of the Prophet Muhammad is taken
from traditional Muslim biographical literature, including
"hadith." Passages from the Qur'an are used throughout to reinforce
the stories. The material is authentic and the style lively and
attractive. Although the book has been written for children of 10
to 15 years of age, it can be usefully read by anyone as an
introduction because of its completeness and clarity. There are 32
colour illustrations although there has been no attempt to portray
either the Prophet or his Companions. The illustrations are
representative of traditional Islamic life as lived in many Arab
countries and portray scenes that have occurred in those countries
for over a thousand years.
Being Muslim is written for Muslims and non-Muslims alike. It
presents a readable explanation of the most complex and
emotion-laden issues of our troubled times. The varying branches of
Islam are analyzed and their history outlined - but the focus is on
the present. In speaking about and crossing political, cultural and
religious divisions, this book offers a unique perspective, forged
in Canada, a country where people from everywhere on earth have
found a way to live in peace. Terrorism. Wars. Jihad. Hijab.
Polygamy. Muhammad's many wives. Muslim prayer. Female
circumcision. Honor killings. Sharia. Stoning. Status of Muslim
women. All these topics and more are tackled in this fascinating
and informative book for young adult readers. "[The Groundwork
Guides] are excellent books, mandatory for school libraries and the
increasing body of young people prepared to take ownership of the
situations and problems previous generations have left them." -

This is the fourth Caliph of Islam, but he is the first to remember
from among all the Companions of the Prophet Muhammad as far as
bravery is concerned. This book brings to life the biography of
this unique hero of Islam, the gallant lion of the fields, the
standard-bearer of the heroes, and the pir, or spiritual guide, of
believers. It thoroughly analyses where and how he was raised, the
dynamics that formed his personality and what sort of a future
destiny lay in store for him. His life has a lot to offer us today,
presenting us with many examples and experiences that we can carry
into our own social lives.

In Fundamentalism and Secularization, Egyptian philosopher Mourad
Wahba traces the historical origins of fundamentalism and
secularization as ideas and practices in order to theorize their
symbiotic relationship, and how it is impacted by global capitalism
and, more recently, postmodernism. This gives voice to an argument
from within the Islamic world that is very different to that given
platform in the mainstream, showing that fundamentalism does not
arise normally and naturally from Islam but is a complex phenomenon
linked to modernization and the development of capitalism in
dependent countries, that is, tied to imperialism. Wahba's central
argument concerns the organic relationship between fundamentalism
and parasitic capitalism. Wahba is equally critical of religious
fundamentalism and global capitalism, which for him are
obstructions to secularization and democracy. While the three
Abrahamic religions are examined when it comes to fundamentalism,
Wahba deconstructs Islamic fundamentalism in particular and in the
process reconstructs an Islamic humanism. Including a new preface
by the author and translator, Fundamentalism and Secularism
provides invaluable insights into how Middle Eastern philosophies
open up new lines of thought in thinking through contemporary
crises.
Caring for Orphans introduces to children the importance of caring
for those less fortunate than themselves. When Saaliha and her
younger brother Ali go and visit the orphans, they are so happy to
meet such nice children. Now Saaliha and Ali now have new friends.
It is essential for children to develop good character, morals and
values from a young age. Reading good books, with good messages and
good role models is part of this character development. Colourful,
funny and educational, the perfect combination for young readers.
