Mega-Events and Social Change - Spectacle, Legacy and Public Culture (Paperback): Maurice Roche Mega-Events and Social Change - Spectacle, Legacy and Public Culture (Paperback)
Maurice Roche
R1,037 Discovery Miles 10 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The spectacle of major cultural and sporting events can preoccupy modern societies. This book is concerned with contemporary mega-events, like the Olympics and Expos. Using a sociological perspective Roche argues that mega-events reflect the major social changes which now influence our societies, particularly in the West, and that these amount to a new 'second phase' of the modernization process. Changes are particularly visible in the media, urban and global locational aspects of mega-events. Thus he suggests that contemporary mega-events, both in their achievements and their vulnerabilities, reflect, in the media sphere, the rise of the internet; in the urban sphere, de-industrialisation and the growing ecological crisis; and in the global sphere, the relative decline of the West and the rise of China and other 'emerging' countries. -- .

Functions of Sports Clubs in European Societies - A Cross-National Comparative Study (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Siegfried... Functions of Sports Clubs in European Societies - A Cross-National Comparative Study (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Siegfried Nagel, Karsten Elmose-Osterlund, Bjarne Ibsen, Jeroen Scheerder
R4,069 Discovery Miles 40 690 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book takes a closer look at the societal functions of sports clubs by using the broad range of empirical data of a comparative study. There is a limited amount of up-to-date knowledge on the functions of sports clubs and their potential to promote public health, social cohesion and democratic participation through volunteering and thus contribute to public welfare in European societies. Most of the existing studies are country-specific and therefore do not allow for making comparisons from a cross-national perspective. In light of this, the project 'Social Inclusion and Volunteering in Sports Clubs in Europe' (SIVSCE) collected, analysed and discussed comparable data and knowledge across ten European countries and disseminated this knowledge to politicians, sports professionals and sports volunteers in Europe. The SIVSCE project contains comparative data of clubs as well as of members in selected sports clubs. In each country chapter, the comparative data from the SIVSCE project is put together in a coherent way. Particularly, the data of the member survey give in-depth information about the fulfillment of the different functions of sports clubs (e.g. extension of democratic participation, social integration). Providing in-depth data related to policy issues, structure and management of clubs and individual member surveys, this book will be useful for students particularly those in sports management programmes as well as researchers and practitioners in social science and economics.

Gym Culture, Identity and Performance-Enhancing Drugs - Tracing a Typology of Steroid Use (Paperback): Ask Vest Christiansen Gym Culture, Identity and Performance-Enhancing Drugs - Tracing a Typology of Steroid Use (Paperback)
Ask Vest Christiansen
R1,385 Discovery Miles 13 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is about gym culture, the pursuit of fit, muscular bodies and the use of drugs as a means to get there. Building on the international research literature and in-depth interviews with men who have experience of image and performance enhancing drugs (IPEDs), the book explores the fascination with muscles, motivations for using drugs to enhance them, assessments of risks, and experience of side effects. The book examines what the altered body does to the men's identity, self-image and relationships with peers and partners. Taking an evolutionary psychological approach, it also investigates the biological and psychological foundations of the fascination with the muscular body and discusses the notion of precarious manhood. Building on these analyses the book considers the political and regulatory initiatives in place to prevent the use of IPEDs and assesses those strategies' potential to reach their aims. This is essential reading for anybody with an interest in the issue of drugs in sport, the ethics of sport, sociology of sport, sociology of the body, masculinity or public health.

Swimming Communities in Victorian England (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Dave Day, Margaret Roberts Swimming Communities in Victorian England (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Dave Day, Margaret Roberts
R2,443 Discovery Miles 24 430 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book explores how different constituencies influenced the development of nineteenth-century swimming in England, and highlights the central role played by swimming professors. These professionals were influential in inspiring participation in swimming, particularly among women, well before the amateur community created the Amateur Swimming Association, and this volume outlines some key life-courses to illustrate their working practices. Female exhibitors were important to professors and chapter three discusses these natationists and their impact on women's swimming. Subsequent chapters address the employment opportunities afforded by new swimming baths and the amateur community that formed clubs and a national organization, which excluded swimming professors, many of whom subsequently worked successfully abroad. Dave Day and Margaret Roberts argue that the critical role played by professors in developing swimming has been forgotten, and suggest that their story is a reminder that individuals were just as important to the foundation of modern sport as the formation of amateur organizations.

Language, Identity and Cycling in the New Media Age - Exploring Interpersonal Semiotics in Multimodal Media and Online Texts... Language, Identity and Cycling in the New Media Age - Exploring Interpersonal Semiotics in Multimodal Media and Online Texts (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Patrick Kiernan
R3,967 Discovery Miles 39 670 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book examines how identities associated with cycling are evoked, narrated and negotiated in a media context dominated by digital environments. Arguing that the nature of identity is being impacted by the changing nature of the material and semiotic resources available for making meaning, the author introduces an approach to exploring such identity positioning through the interrelated frameworks of Systemic Functional Linguistics and Multimodal Analysis, and illustrates how this happens in practice. The book is divided into three parts, each of which focuses on a different aspect of identity and media environment. Part I considers celebrity identities in the conventional media of print and television. Part II investigates community and leisure / sporting identity through an online cycling forum, while Part III examines corporate identity realised through corporate websites, consumer reviews and Youtube channels. This unique volume will appeal to students and scholars of discourse analysis, applied linguistics and the world of cycling.

The Meaning of Leisure - Definitions and Practices among Migrant and Non-Migrant Women in an Urban Space (Hardcover, 1st ed.... The Meaning of Leisure - Definitions and Practices among Migrant and Non-Migrant Women in an Urban Space (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Vania L. Sandoval
R2,795 Discovery Miles 27 950 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book deals with the concept of leisure and the everyday leisure practices of a group of diverse single women in an urban setting-Mannheim, Germany. Vania Sandoval focuses on how social structure and individual choices relate to each other in the local context. Initially, the book considers the women as a relatively homogenous group, analyzing how they conceive, organize and experience their leisure in a similar manner with individual nuances. It then proceeds to highlight some of the processes that lead, in this particular case, to migration-based differences in their leisure practices.

Time, Freedom and the Self - The Cultural Construction of "Free" Time (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Michelle Shir-Wise Time, Freedom and the Self - The Cultural Construction of "Free" Time (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Michelle Shir-Wise
R2,685 Discovery Miles 26 850 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

While abundant research has investigated time use, much less attention has been given to the cultural meanings attached to free time and what these may express with regard to conceptions of freedom and the self. In an attempt to fill this gap, Michelle Shir-Wise examines not only what people do in their free time, but also how they perceive, interpret and experience it, and in what way it relates to notions of happiness, freedom and the ideal self. Time, Freedom and the Self draws on contemporary theoretical debates concerning the relation between discourse, cultural repertoires, subjective meaning and agency, as well as literature around the sociology of leisure, to inform a unique interpretation of free time ("disciplined freedom"), developed in the light of questionnaires and in-depth interviews with middle-class, middle-aged participants in suburban Israel.

Work and Retirement (Hardcover): Stanley Parker Work and Retirement (Hardcover)
Stanley Parker
R3,507 Discovery Miles 35 070 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In the early 1980s world recession and widespread unemployment had accentuated an existing trend - more people retiring from work early and living longer after doing so. Some were adequately prepared for a life of well-earned 'leisure' in retirement, but too many were not. The policies of employers, unions and governments on retirement needed to be challenged in societies where work opportunities were collapsing but where leisure activities and values were not yet strong enough to take their place. Originally published in 1982, Dr Parker, a sociologist, provides a careful and critical examination of what we knew about retirement and discusses possible alternative answers to the various problems involved at the time. The history of retirement is first considered, followed by a conceptual analysis of types of retirement. There are chapters on preparation for retirement, the capacity of older people to work, and on the varying experiences of retirement. Separate consideration is given to the question of work after retirement age and whether retirement is actually experienced as leisure. The concluding chapter examines various policy alternatives for dealing with the problems raised earlier in the book. Work and Retirement was intended for students of industrial sociology and industrial psychology, for personnel and human resource professionals, for trade unionists and for all those who had an interest in understanding the developments in the field of retirement and the older working population. Now it can be read in its historical context.

Heritage in the Home - Domestic Prehabitation and Inheritance (Paperback): Caron Lipman Heritage in the Home - Domestic Prehabitation and Inheritance (Paperback)
Caron Lipman
R1,383 Discovery Miles 13 830 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores how people encounter the pasts of their homes, offering insights into the affective, emotional and embodied geographies of domestic heritage. For many people, the intimacy of dwelling is tempered by levels of awareness that their home has been previously occupied by other people whose traces remain in the objects, decor, spaces, stories, memories and atmospheres they leave behind. This book frames home as a site of historical encounter, knowledge and imagination, exploring how different forms of domestic 'inheritance' - material, felt, imagined, known - inform or challenge people's homemaking practices and feelings of belonging, and how the meanings and experiences of domestic space and dwelling are shaped by residents' awareness of their home's history. The domestic home becomes an important site for heritage work, an intimate space of memories and histories - both our own but also not our own - a place of real and imagined encounters with a range of selves and others. This book will be of interest to academics, students and professionals in the fields of heritage studies, cultural geography, contemporary archaeology, public history, museum studies, sociology and anthropology.

Identity, Belonging, and Community in Men's Roller Derby (Paperback): Dawn Fletcher Identity, Belonging, and Community in Men's Roller Derby (Paperback)
Dawn Fletcher
R1,373 Discovery Miles 13 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Modern roller derby has been theorised as a gendered leisure context, offering women opportunities for empowerment and growth, and enabling them to carve a space for themselves in sport. No longer a women-only sport, roller derby is now played by all genders and has been heralded as a model of inclusivity within sport. Identity, Belonging, and Community in Men's Roller Derby offers an insight into how men's roller derby culture is created and maintained, how members forge an identity for themselves and their team, and how they create feelings of belonging and inclusivity. Through in-depth ethnographic study of a specific, localised roller derby community, this book examines how practices of skills capital intersect with different configurations of masculinity in a continual struggle between traditional and inclusive models of sport. An interrogation of the ways a DIY sport can be seen to be achieved, experienced, and understood in everyday practice, this book will appeal to scholars of men, masculinities, and sport. Additionally, the methodological discussions will be of value to ethnographers and researchers who have had to deal with a disruptive presence.

Politics, Ideology and Football Fandom - The Transformation of Modern Poland (Paperback): Radoslaw Kossakowski, Przemyslaw... Politics, Ideology and Football Fandom - The Transformation of Modern Poland (Paperback)
Radoslaw Kossakowski, Przemyslaw Nosal, Wojciech Wozniak
R1,382 Discovery Miles 13 820 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Football fans and football culture represent a unique prism through which to view contemporary society and politics. Based on in-depth empirical research into football in Poland, this book examines how fans develop political identities and how those identities can influence the wider political culture. It surveys the turbulent history of Poland in recent decades and explores the dominant right-wing ideology on the terraces, characterised by nationalism, 'traditional' values and anti-immigrant sentiment. As one of the first book-length studies of fandom in Eastern Europe, this book makes an important contribution to our understanding of society and politics in post-Communist states. Politics, Ideology and Football Fandom is an important read for students and researchers studying sport, politics and identity, as well as those working in sports studies and political studies covering sociology of sport, globalisation studies, East European politics, ethnic studies, social movements studies, political history and nationalism studies.

Sport, Welfare and Social Policy in the European Union (Paperback): Stefano Martelli, Alberto Testa, Nicola Porro Sport, Welfare and Social Policy in the European Union (Paperback)
Stefano Martelli, Alberto Testa, Nicola Porro
R1,375 Discovery Miles 13 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Sport is often seen as an indicator of the civic maturity of a community, an aspect of the rights of citizens to health, education and social integration. This book examines the relationships between participation in sport and physical activity, and welfare policies across Europe. It argues that the success of campaigns for the promotion of sport depend on the existence of dedicated welfare policies promoted by the European states and explores variations in cultural models and structures of governance across Europe. Addressing the function of supranational institutions such as the EU as well as voluntary networks, the book illuminates key issues in European societies such as migration, financial austerity and Brexit as they relate to sport policy. This is important reading for scholars and students in the fields of European sport and physical activity, sociology, political science and organisational analysis, as well as operators and managers of the sport systems involved in advanced training programmes.

Embodiment, Identity and Disability Sport - An Ethnography of Elite Visually Impaired Athletes (Paperback): Ben Powis Embodiment, Identity and Disability Sport - An Ethnography of Elite Visually Impaired Athletes (Paperback)
Ben Powis
R1,377 Discovery Miles 13 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book investigates the complex relationship between embodiment, identity and disability sport, based on ethnographic research with an international-level visually impaired cricket team. Alongside issues of empowerment, classification and valorisation, it conceptualises the sensuous dimension of being in disability sport and challenges the idealised notion of the sporting body. It explores the players' lived experiences of participating and competing in an elite disabled sport culture and uses an embodied theoretical approach drawing upon sociology, phenomenology and contemporary disability theory to examine aspects of this previously unexamined research "site," both on and off the pitch. Written in a way that values and accurately represents the participants' traditionally marginalised voices, the book analyses the role that elite disability sport plays in the construction of identity and helps us to better understand the relationships between disability, sport and wider society. Embodiment, Identity and Disability Sport is essential reading for any student, researcher, practitioner or policymaker working in disability sport, and a source of useful new perspectives for anybody with an interest in the sociology of sport or disability studies.

Being and Dwelling through Tourism - An anthropological perspective (Paperback): Catherine Palmer Being and Dwelling through Tourism - An anthropological perspective (Paperback)
Catherine Palmer
R1,375 Discovery Miles 13 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Much of the existing literature seeks to make sense of tourism based on singular approaches such as visuality, identity, mobility, performance and globalised consumption. What is missing, however, is an overarching framework within which these valuable approaches can be located. This book offers one such framework using the concept of dwelling taken from Heidegger and Ingold as the starting point from which to consider the interrelatedness of being, dwelling and tourism. The anthropological focus at the core of the book is infused with multidisciplinary perspectives that draw on a variety of subjects including philosophy, material cultural studies and cultural geography. The main themes include sensuous, material, architectural and earthly dwelling and each chapter features a discussion of the unifying theoretical framework for each theme, followed by an illustrative focus on specific aspects of tourism. This theoretically substantive book will be of interest to anyone involved with tourism research from a wide range of disciplines including anthropology, sociology, geography, cultural studies, leisure studies and tourist studies.

Athlete Activism - Contemporary Perspectives (Hardcover): Rory Magrath Athlete Activism - Contemporary Perspectives (Hardcover)
Rory Magrath
R4,491 Discovery Miles 44 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines the phenomenon of athlete activism across all levels of sport, from elite and international sport, to collegiate and semi-pro, and asks what this tells us about the relationship between sport and wider society. With contributions from scholars around the world, the book presents a series of fascinating case studies, including the activism of world-famous athletes such as Serena Williams, Megan Rapinoe and Raheem Sterling. Covering a broad range of sports, from the National Football League (NFL) and Australian Rules, to fencing and the Olympic Games, the book sheds important light on some of the most important themes in the study of sport, including gender, power, racism, intersectionality and the rise of digital media. It also considers the financial impact on athletes when they take a stand and the psychological impact of activism and how that might relate to sports performance. It has never been the case that 'sport and politics don't mix', and now, more than ever, the opposite is true. This is essential reading for anybody with an interest in the politics or sociology of sport, the politics of protest, social movements or media studies.

The Politics of Leisure (Hardcover): Rudy Dunlap, Justin Harmon, Jeff N. Rose The Politics of Leisure (Hardcover)
Rudy Dunlap, Justin Harmon, Jeff N. Rose
R4,483 Discovery Miles 44 830 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores entanglements between politics and leisure, ranging from the electorate's concerns with public recreation resources, to the presence of politics in casual conversation, and to the use of leisure as a means of preserving racial hierarchies in society. In noting the contributions of past scholarship, it also points toward a trend of increasingly political leisure research, where research helps to unpack the multiple ways in which power suffuses the experience of leisure. A contrast between 'being political', on one hand, and the tribal politicization that characterizes much of contemporary social life, on the other hand, demonstrates that scholars and educators can and should be engaged in politically-oriented scholarship, while also building a more diverse and intellectually productive academy. This edited volume will be of great interest to researchers and scholars interested in race, power, polarization, and the interrelationship between politics and leisure. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the journal Leisure Sciences.

Routledge Handbook of the Tourist Experience (Hardcover): Richard Sharpley Routledge Handbook of the Tourist Experience (Hardcover)
Richard Sharpley
R6,666 Discovery Miles 66 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Routledge Handbook of the Tourist Experience offers a comprehensive synthesis of contemporary research on the tourist experience. It draws together multidisciplinary perspectives from leading tourism scholars to explore emergent tourist behaviours and motivations. This handbook provides up-to-date, critical discussions of established and emergent themes and issues related to the tourist experience from a primarily socio-cultural perspective. It opens with a detailed introduction which lays down the framework used to examine the dynamic parameters of the tourist experience. Organised into five thematic sections, chapters seek to build and enhance knowledge and understanding of the significance and meaning of diverse elements of the tourist experience. Section 1 conceptualises and understands the tourist experience through an exploration of conventional themes such as tourism as authentic and spiritual experience, as well as emerging themes such as tourism as an embodied experience. Section 2 investigates the new, developing tourist demands and motivations, and a growing interest in the travel career. Section 3 considers the significance, motives, practices and experiences of different types of tourists and their roles such as the tourist as photographer. Section 4 discusses the relevance of 'place' to the tourist experience by exploring the relationship between tourism and place. The last section, Section 5, scrutinises the role of the tourist in creating their experiences through themes such as 'transformations in the tourist role' from passive receiver of experiences to co-creator of experiences, and 'external mediators in creating tourist experiences'. This handbook is the first to fill a notable gap in the tourism literature and collate within a single volume critical insights into the diverse elements of the tourist experience today. It will be of key interest to academics and students across the fields of tourism, hospitality management, geography, marketing and consumer behaviour.
