Shu pu, completed in 687, and Xu shu pu, written in 1208, are
outstanding among early treatises on calligraphy. Chang Ch'ung-ho
and Hans H. Frankel introduce and provide translations and
annotations for these important texts. The book also includes a
facsimile and a transcription of the original Shu pu and a
transcription of Xu shu pu (the original is not extant), together
with a glossary of calligraphic terms, an appendix of persons
mentioned, and a full bibliography. Because the concepts of
calligraphy developed in tandem with theories on painting and
literature, treatises on these three arts use similar ideas, terms,
and images. The treatises in this volume will therefore be of
interest to students in all these fields.
The creative design potential of calligraphy is almost
limitless: it can be a very personal pathway to explore an enormous
array of sophisticated visual concepts. In this striking and
original book, renowned calligrapher Denise Lach transforms images
from nature into a rich source of inspiration for calligraphic
compositions.
This is not a technical how-to guide, but an incitement to
reinterpret our surroundings in infinitely varied lettering. Lach
invites us to look closely at details and textures, expanding our
powers of observation and finding ideas in the world around us.
Using a range of writing tools and techniques, she takes a playful
approach to written script, encouraging readers to look beyond
legibility and use letterforms as building blocks to create
beautiful calligraphic images.
Spirited history, comprehensive instruction manual covers 13 important writing styles (ca. 4th century thru 15th). Fascinating facts about Roman Rustic, Uncial, Carolingian Minuscule, Early Gothic, eight other styles; all examples beautifully photographed. Detailed directions for duplicating medieval techniques with modern tools. 232 illustrations.
The covetable look of calligraphy is now well within reach for even
the most novice practitioner. This ready-to-gift box--a brown paper
package tied up with string--includes all the materials and
technical guidance needed to learn calligraphy in a modern style
that embraces the beauty of each person's unique penmanship.
Illustrated project ideas show that script, easy as it is, makes
everything irresistible.
The elegant pen-strokes and visual harmony of Chinese writing,
known as hanzi, have long been admired in the west. Classical
Chinese calligraphy is a popular and valuable art form, and with
the increasing economic and cultural power of China, its writing is
becoming more widely appreciated and understood. In particular, the
deep layers of history and symbolism which exist behind even the
most everyday character have a strong appeal to those seeking
understanding from an alternative philosophy. Chinese Characters:
The Art of Hanzi features the most interesting of the three to four
thousand characters are needed to write modern Chinese. Characters
expressing concepts such as love, peace, respect and happiness are
reproduced in a large format, enabling the reader to trace, scan or
photocopy them for transfer to any other medium. Alongside the
character is an accessible and inspiring explanation of how the
character developed, what the particular strokes symbolize, and its
various different meanings.

In China the tradition of a book society is longer than anywhere
else in the world. Chinese paper making, calligraphy and woodblock
printing date from very early ages, but have for a very long time
remained almost unknown to the Western world. At the IFLA satellite
meeting Chinese Written and Printed Cultural Heritage and Library
Work in Hangzhou in 2006 the richness of present day book
historical research and library activities in China has been
presented by more than sixty papers. This fine selection reflects
the width and depth of this extremely important and immense Chinese
heritage.
With 142 photos and these short, step-by-step lessons from a master
Chinese calligrapher, you can enjoy the basics of the beautiful

Break the rules, embrace imperfection, and express your unique self
through lettering art! This book is for anyone who's felt the
pressure of perfection. As a schoolgirl in Vietnam and later in
online lettering classes, Huyen Dinh was always told to perfect her
penmanship. Instead, she started embracing her own imperfect
style-with squiggly lines, cheeky messages, and candy colors. In
this upbeat guidebook, Dinh walks you through the basic rules of
lettering and then teaches you how to break them in clever and
creative ways. She shares challenges and triumphs from her own
artistic journey and offers inspiration as well as technical tips.
You can use your new lettering skills to tell your personal story,
support a cause you care about, or decorate your tote bags and
sneakers! Fully illustrated in Dinh's signature pastel palette,
this book is the perfect companion for any aspiring creative.
The traditional art of Illumination - the creation of elaborate,
decorated letters and initials - is now attracting new enthusiasts.
It reached its apogee in the monasteries of medieval Europe and was
practised with great skill and artistry. Embellished with gold
leaf, the illuminated letters of those early scribes seemed to
reflect light, as though they were indeed 'illuminated'.
Illuminated Letters presents step-by-step instructions for
recreating illuminated alphabets from six historical periods,
including Celtic, Gothic and Romanesque. Diagrams for upper- and
lower-case letters are accompanied by ideas for borders and
decorations, and full instructions for gilding. Each section also
explores ways in which the illuminated letters can be adapted to
create a truly personal style, while a gallery of modern examples
will inspire further creativity.
With a photo-rich teaching method that's welcoming to everyone,
this introduction helps you use ink and a qalam-a traditional reed
pen-to create flowing, timelessly decorative lines of Arabic
script. The book begins with the history behind this art that
decorates writings and architecture worldwide. Master calligrapher
Alani next shows you how to choose the materials and prepare your
tools. After a quick introduction to how the Arabic language works,
he guides you through exercises to help you successfully write the
28 Arabic letters, join them together, and finally assemble them
into phrases. Once you have mastered the basics, explore creating
graphic compositions in each of seven major styles (Kufic, Thuluth,
Naskh, Persian, Turkish, Riqa, and Maghrebi). Sometimes it takes
years to be able to decipher a composition, but meanwhile, you can
enjoy its aesthetic beauty. This guide helps beginners, like
centuries of people before them, create graceful, meaningful art
from words.
The work of Andrzej Wajda, one of the world's most important
filmmakers, shows remarkable cohesion in spite of the wide ranging
scope of his films, as this study of his complete output of feature
films shows. Not only do his films address crucial historical,
social and political issues; the complexity of his work is
reinforced by the incorporation of the elements of major film and
art movements. It is the reworking of these different elements by
Wajda, as the author shows, which give his films their unique
visual and aural qualities.

Clear instructions and 148 photos welcome you to the subtle,
fascinating world of Japanese calligraphy. Beginning with a summary
of the art's history, this guide then helps you understand the two
systems of script that Japanese uses together: kanji, the
ideogram-like characters borrowed from the Chinese language; and
kana, the purely phonetic characters. Next, you'll learn the
correct way to use the "four treasures of study" (brush, ink,
inkstone, and paper), as well as seals and other tools. Then begin
learning to calligraph characters, words, and even poems using
either a large brush or a small writing brush. Try your hand at
joined calligraphy, which is considered the soul of Japanese
calligraphy. Finally, a gallery of works of calligraphy art by
grand masters and other renowned experts offers even more
inspiration.
This practical guide is perfect for those looking to try this
ancient art form for the first time! In this book, Japanese master
artist Shozo Koike reveals the simple secrets of Sumi-e, offering
step-by-step instructions with clear photographs and online video
tutorials showing you how to paint 19 traditional subjects. Sumi-e
is the meditative Japanese form of ink painting taught by Zen
Buddhist monks to encourage mindfulness and an awareness of our
surroundings. It uses only ink, water, a brush and paper to capture
natural objects and landscapes in a vivid, spontaneous fashion.
Koike begins with the basics--what to buy and how to prepare the
ink in a traditional inkstone. Next, he shows you how to practice
the 11 basic brushstrokes used for all Sumi-e paintings. The 19
traditional subjects taught in this book include: Flowers like
orchids, chrysanthemums, camellias, roses and peonies Plants and
fruits including bamboo, eggplants, grapes and chestnuts Animal
figures including small birds, butterflies, chicks, crabs and
goldfish Koike also explains the philosophy of Sumi-e, which
emerges from the use of negative white space to enhance the painted
forms. Readers will enter into a world not just of black and white,
but of infinite shades of gray which are capable of evoking all the
sensations of color using these techniques.
This unusual and interesting book is a fascinating account of the
world of Chinese writing. It examines Chinese space and the
political and social use of writing as propaganda, a publicity
booster and as a ladder for social climbing.
