Author Sarah Graham says, ‘For me, this book is about putting goodness in, and getting goodness out. It’s about food that is conscious of refined sugars and refined carbohydrates, and that nourishes our minds and our bodies, but is still full of colour and character, and fits within the context of our busy lives. These are my favourite beautiful, simple, wholesome recipes that are made for sharing around full and merry tables.’ Following on from her previous books Bitten, Smitten and Home, Sarah has poured much love and care into writing more than just another recipe book; Wholesome is a guide to living well and eating mindfully. Contents:
Hot Water is an intimate and daring look into the life of a young African woman from the Cape Flats with a chronic illness. The book investigates how endometriosis affects the way young woman function and navigate the world, and how this becomes especially complicated for those who are underprivileged and reliant on the public sector’s healthcare system. In Hot Water Nadine Dirks reveals the unique issues of racism, sexism, classism, fatphobia and slut-shaming that African women experience within the context of healthcare facilities, and how especially jarring it is when the stigma comes from medical staff who one expects to have the patient’s care as their primary concern. All of this has enraged Dirks and catapulted her into becoming a sexual reproductive health and rights advocate. Hot Water tells the story of how people with chronic illness are treated daily, at school, university and socially for being differently abled; how people are regarded as lazy, aggressive, disappointing, lacking, among multiple other things for being unwell in comparison to their healthy counterparts. One cannot look at seeking adequate healthcare as a young, black, underprivileged woman on the Cape Flats without experiencing racism in the most blatant of ways. Even with guidelines in place, the book shows that it is next to impossible to invoke those rights even if you are aware of them for fear of being victimised and excluded from the system.
How would you cope, suddenly not being able to talk, in a world that only knows how to communicate through speech? This story explores one woman's journey through this uncharted territory and her eventual victory through tenacity and faith. Kim Ballantine’s profound and poignant description of her remarkable journey with voice loss and cancer is a humbling tribute to the resilience of the human spirit, the love of family and the faithfulness of God. Hot Tea and Apricots speaks directly to the courage center in each of us, calling us to stand in faith and trusting that God who sees what we cannot, is already lighting the path ahead even in the darkest of times. This book is for anyone of any gender, ethnicity or creed who is seeking a pathway to their own courage, through unthinkable pain, towards victory. As heartbreaking, raw and painfully honest – and at times darkly humorous – as the memoir is, Hot Tea and Apricots is a triumphant story of hope and holding onto life.

The love language of the Cape Malays is food, and author Cariema Isaacs says tramakasie (thank you) every day that she gets to express herself in this way. Modern Cape Malay Cooking, Cariema’s fourth cookbook, is a celebration of food and feasting, providing a contemporary view of Cape Malay cuisine and simple home cooking. The recipes showcase a blend of flavours that redefine the Cape Malay palate through modern ingredients and global influences. Though traditional Cape Malay cuisine and recipes have stood the test of time, adaptations have given rise to a culinary fusion. This is especially thanks to the Cape Malay millennial generation that craves popular dishes from the East and West, such as a comforting pasta or a quick stir-fry, but with a Cape Malay twist – this means it must be spicy, it must be saucy and it must be packed with flavour! In Modern Cape Malay Cooking, Cariema shares the recipes and influences that have inspired these modern dishes, with simple ingredients and vibrant aromatics for anyone who is curious and courageous enough to create flavour.

In Timeless South African, renowned cook and food writer Ilse van der
Merwe has compiled a list of the top 101 iconic South African dishes –
meals not only seen as ‘heritage food’, but dishes that are still
relevant, recognisable, loved and prepared in many South African
communities today. Well-researched and based on formal and informal
discussions with chefs, members of the public and food lovers of
different backgrounds, this book celebrates the country’s diverse
cultures and culinary traditions, highlighting the history of each
recipe as well as the modern ways in which they have been reinvented.
The dishes in this book – whether humble or celebratory – are paired
with classically styled and vibrant photos. Do you know your vetkoek
from your amagwinya? Or your koeksisters from your koesisters? And do
you know the interesting histories of bobotie, the gatsby, hertzoggies
and Durban naan? The more we share our food and our stories, the more
we’ll be able to celebrate what unites us: being South African.
It's time to fight back. Each day, more South Africans are targeted, labelled, and hounded out of society for expressing their opinions - ordinary opinions that just a few years ago were accepted as rational common sense. Have you been "cancelled" by an online mob that won't stop harassing you until you're fired from your job? Helen Zille almost was - but she survived by fighting back. In #StayWoke: Go Broke, the bestselling author and defining South African political figure explains why the woke Left constitutes a greater threat to South Africa's future than the populist Right does. Now more than ever, liberals must strengthen their spines and fight for their values - or be eviscerated in the Culture Wars raging across the English-speaking world. If you're looking for an incisive, indispensable survival guide through this tumultuous period of South African history, then #StayWoke: Go Broke is for you.
When we eat al fresco – outside, beyond the confines of four walls – everyday meals become a heady combination of fresh air and flavours, of outdoor sounds and natural views. Whether that ‘outside’ is our own backyard, garden, patio or stoep, seaside caravan park, bushveld or the middle of nowhere surrounded by mountains, it makes little difference because we come away energized, nurtured and deeply satisfied. And if preparing those meals doesn’t require conventional electricity during the dreaded loadshedding, well, that’s just the cherry on the top! In Easy Al Fresco, Ilse van der Merwe offers a simple and inspiring guide for fabulous, easy and scrumptious dishes that can all be prepared with a limited range of basic utensils, and a fire or kettle braai. As Ilse says, this should be the only book you pack for your next trail hike, fishing weekend, game reserve trip or seaside holiday. From breads, spreads, appetisers, salads and sandwiches, through to mains and desserts, Ilse has you covered. So what are you waiting for? Light the fire, grab a whisk and turn the pages of Easy Al Fresco – you’ll never look back.

The perfect match. Or so she thinks. Her warmth and empathy. His charisma and ambition. Yet, Cathy feels safer teaching battle-scarred gangsters in a prison classroom than at home with her own partner. By day she walks on eggshells. At night she sleeps on the backseat of her car. Her safe place is an all-night roadhouse; her best friend, her journal. The slow boil intensifies until, one day, Cathy finds her grandmother’s armoire smashed to pieces in her bedroom, a hammer on the floor, her life in splinters beside it. Part memoir, part inspiration, Boiling A Frog Slowly is unflinching in its confrontation of abuse and utterly courageous in its portrayal of redemption. |
