Depictions and Images of War in Edwardian Newspapers, 1899-1914 (Hardcover): G. Wilkinson Depictions and Images of War in Edwardian Newspapers, 1899-1914 (Hardcover)
G. Wilkinson
R2,864 Discovery Miles 28 640 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Through a detailed examination of newspaper coverage from 1899-1914, this book seeks to understand the vicarious experience of warfare held by Edwardians at the outset of the First World War. The attitudes towards and perceptions of war held by those who participated in it or encouraged others to do so, are crucial to our understanding of the origins of the First World War. Taking into account media history, cultural studies, and military history, the author argues that the press depicted war as distant and safe; beneficial and desirable and even as some kind of sport or game.

Telecommunications and Socio-Economic Development (Hardcover): S. MacDonald, G. Madden Telecommunications and Socio-Economic Development (Hardcover)
S. MacDonald, G. Madden
R6,011 Discovery Miles 60 110 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Telecommunications systems are central to the development of a global economy, and are fundamental to the means by which most business is conducted, organised and managed. Supported by recent sophisticated econometric analyses, the International Telecommunications Union considers the link between telecommunications and economic development to be axiomatic. This volume takes a broader view. Four themes are considered: Telecommunications and Development focuses on new technology diffusion, and the regional impact of telecommunications investment. International Dimensions provides an examination of the political, strategic and legal environment within which new communications technology evolves and is employed. Organisational Aspects is concerned with organisation-specific analyses of the role and impact of telecommunications within firms. Such an approach avoids the 'telecommunications as oil' treatment of much recent analysis. Country Studies examines telecommunications issues in the Asia-Pacific region, South America, and the former communist nations of Central and Eastern Europe. The papers tacitly stress the importance of path dependence; that is, institutional features and history, are important in determining telecommunications futures.

The Future of Journalism (Hardcover): Bob Franklin The Future of Journalism (Hardcover)
Bob Franklin
R4,949 Discovery Miles 49 490 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The future of journalism is hotly contested and highly uncertain reflecting developments in media technologies, shifting business strategies for online news, changing media organisational and regulatory structures, the fragmentation of audiences and a growing public concern about some aspects of tabloid journalism practices and reporting, as well as broader political, sociological and cultural changes. These developments have combined to impoverish the flow of existing revenues available to fund journalism, impact radically on traditional journalism professional practices, while simultaneously generating an increasingly frenzied search for sustainable and equivalent funding -- and from a wide range of sources - to nurture and deliver quality journalism in the future. This book brings together journalists and distinguished academic specialists from around the globe to present the findings from their research and to discuss the future of journalism, the shifting quality of its products, its wide ranging sources of finance, as well as the economic and democratic consequences of the significant changes confronting Journalism. The Future of Journalism details the challenges facing the press in contemporary societies and provides essential reading for everyone interested in the role of journalism in shaping and sustaining literate, civil and democratic societies. This book consists of special issues from Journalism Studies and Journalism Practice.

An Introduction to Global Media for the Twenty-First Century (Hardcover): Ole J. Mjos An Introduction to Global Media for the Twenty-First Century (Hardcover)
Ole J. Mjos
R2,603 Discovery Miles 26 030 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

An Introduction to Global Media for the Twenty-First Century provides a thorough introduction to the field of global media today. The book presents the key changes taking place as the global media landscape evolves, and the main theories of the field, that explain these developments. Tracing, first, the formative development of an international and global media landscape throughout the 20th century from the telegraph, television and film export, and transnational television to the Internet, the book then focuses on developments in the 21st century. This includes: the digitization of the global media and communications sector; the popularization of the Internet and digital infrastructure such as the smartphone and platforms; the emergence of global online media and services; the production and distribution of digital media content; and the exploitation of user data. Case studies illustrate key developments throughout the book. The book shows how the field is characterized by a continuity of critical concerns in relation to power, influence, and domination; media user empowerment and exploitation; and social and sustainable development and democratic conditions, as well as geopolitical shifts, in a global context.

The Children's Book Business - Lessons from the Long Eighteenth Century (Hardcover): Lissa Paul The Children's Book Business - Lessons from the Long Eighteenth Century (Hardcover)
Lissa Paul
R4,630 Discovery Miles 46 300 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In The Children's Book Business, Lissa Paul constructs a new kind of book biography. By focusing on Eliza Fenwick's1805 product-placement novel, Visits to the Juvenile Library, in the context of Marjorie Moon's 1990 bibliography, Benjamin Tabart's Juvenile Library, Paul explains how twenty-first century cultural sensibilities are informed by late eighteenth-century attitudes towards children, reading, knowledge, and publishing. The thinking, knowing children of the Enlightenment, she argues, are models for present day technologically-connected, socially-conscious children; the increasingly obsolete images of Romantic innocent and ignorant children are bracketed between the two periods. By drawing on recent scholarship in several fields including book history, cultural studies, and educational theory, The Children's Book Business provides a detailed historical picture of the landscape of some of the trade practices of early publishers, and explains how they developed in concert with the progressive pedagogies of several female authors, including Eliza Fenwick, Mary Wollstonecraft, Anna Barbauld, Maria Edgeworth, and Ann and Jane Taylor. Paul's revisionist reading of the history of children's literature will be of interest to scholars working in eighteenth-century studies, book history, childhood studies, cultural studies, educational history, and children's literature.

Thomas Vinciguerra
R710 Discovery Miles 7 100 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

From its birth in 1925 to the early days of the Cold War, The New Yorker slowly but surely took hold as America's most prestigious, entertaining and informative general-interest periodical. In Cast of Characters, Thomas Vinciguerra paints a portrait of the magazine's cadre of charming, driven, troubled brilliant writers and editors. Many of these characters became legends in their own right but Vinciguerra also shows how, as a group, The New Yorker's inner circle brought forth a profound transformation in how life was perceived, interpreted, written about and published in America. Cast of Characters is the most revealing and entertaining book yet about the personalities who built what Ross called not a magazine but a "movement".

Journalism Education, Training and Employment (Hardcover): Bob Franklin, Donica Mensing Journalism Education, Training and Employment (Hardcover)
Bob Franklin, Donica Mensing
R4,620 Discovery Miles 46 200 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

During this period of rapid and significant change in journalistic practices, journalism educators are re-examining their own profession and contributing to the invention of new models and practices. This edited volume of studies by respected international scholars describes the diverse issues journalism educators are grappling with and the changes they are making in purpose and practice. The book is organized into three sections -- education, training and employment - that explore common themes: How the assumptions embedded in journalism education are being examined and revised in the light of transformative changes in communication; How the definitions of journalism and journalists are broadening in scope and what this means for educators; How newsrooms and training programs around the world are being re-examined and made more effective. An introductory essay and section summaries provide context for the thirteen chapters that constitute the collection. The section on journalism education explores fundamental ways educators are seeking to make their institutions and practices stronger and more responsive. The section on training includes case studies of journalism training programs in sub-Saharan Africa, Turkey, Sweden and the U.S. The final section examines the job prospects and employment market for journalism students with data from the U.S., U.K, Australia, and Sweden. The scope of issues considered in the book makes it a valuable resource for journalism scholars from around the world, as well as doctoral students, journalism and communication administrators in universities, organizations that fund journalism training programs, and practitioners interested in understanding employment and education trends.

Why Nicaragua Vanished - A Story of Reporters and Revolutionaries (Paperback): Robert S. Leiken Why Nicaragua Vanished - A Story of Reporters and Revolutionaries (Paperback)
Robert S. Leiken
R1,344 Discovery Miles 13 440 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In 1990, Nicaragua's Sandinista government was toppled in an election that every major American news organization and pollster predicted they would win in a landslide. Why the Nicaraguan upset and why did the U.S. media get it so wrong? Through an examination of American coverage of Nicaragua since the Cuban Revolution, Why Nicaragua Vanished provides intriguing answers to these questions, and for the first time tests media coverage of a major foreign policy crisis against an independent analysis of the events covered. Robert S. Leiken offers valuable insights into how the media shapes Americans' opinions about the world, and in the process he challenges American cultural stereotypes. Beautifully written, Why Nicaragua Vanished is perfect for all interested in the media, foreign policy, Latin America, or U.S. intellectual life.

Myth And Reality In South Africa's History - A Conflicted Past (Paperback): Christopher Merrett Myth And Reality In South Africa's History - A Conflicted Past (Paperback)
Christopher Merrett
R495 R415 Discovery Miles 4 150 Save R80 (16%) Ships in 5 - 10 working days

History matters. Some wish to bury it; others to use it selectively for their own purposes. But in the case of any nation it must be confronted honestly. Just as the Freedom Charter proclaims that South Africa belongs to all who live in it, so does its history. And the country was liberated by its people, not one specific group.

Myth and Reality in South Africa’s History is a collection of eighty newspaper opinion pieces and feature articles published over a span of thirty years. Their purpose was to examine significant past lives, movements and events, and interpret their contemporary significance for a general readership. Emphasis was placed on individuals and organisations that had tended to be neglected by post-liberation discourse, which was prone to exaggerate the role of certain movements.

The intention was to challenge a monochrome version of national history by emphasising pluralism and diversity. Underlying themes are continuity of faith in universal human rights, individual empowerment and psychological liberation in the face of power, both under and after apartheid.

The chapters of this book are arranged by broad chronology regardless of date of publication to produce a historical narrative; pulled together by a short introduction to modern South African history.

M.V. Dougherty
R1,890 Discovery Miles 18 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume is the first book-length study of disguised forms of plagiarism that mar the body of published research in humanities disciplines. As a contribution to applied research ethics, this practical guide offers a typology of the principal forms of disguised plagiarism. It provides detailed analyses, in-depth case studies, and useful flow charts to assist researchers, editors, and publishers in protecting the integrity of the body of published research literature. Disguised plagiarism is more subtle than copy-and-paste plagiarism; all its varieties involve some additional concealment that creates further distance between the plagiarizing text and its source. These disguised forms are the most difficult forms of plagiarism to detect. Readers of the volume will become acquainted with the subtler forms of plagiarism that corrupt the production and dissemination of knowledge in humanities fields. The book is valuable not only to those interested in research ethics, but also to those in humanities fields including philosophy, theology, and history.

Sociological Perspectives on Media Piracy in the Philippines and Vietnam (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Vivencio O. Ballano Sociological Perspectives on Media Piracy in the Philippines and Vietnam (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Vivencio O. Ballano
R3,006 R2,042 Discovery Miles 20 420 Save R964 (32%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book addresses the persistence of the optical media piracy trade in the Philippines and Vietnam. It goes beyond arguments of defective law enforcement and copyright legal systems by applying sociological perspectives to examine the socio-economic forces behind the advent of piracy in the region. Using documentary and ethnographic data, in addition to resistance and ecological theories in sociology of law and technology as the overall theoretical framework, the book investigates factors that contribute to this phenomenon and factors that impede the full formalization of the optical media trade in the two countries. These factors include the government's attitude towards the informal sector and strong resistance to tougher IPR protection, unstable and sometimes conflicting policies on technologies, burdensome business registration process and weak enforcement of business regulations, bureaucratic corruption and loopholes in law enforcement system as well as trade ties with China. In addition to that, the book highlights the social background of the actors behind the illegal business of counterfeit CDs and DVDs, thereby explaining the reasons they continue to persist in this type of trade. It invites policymakers, law enforcers, advocates of anti-piracy groups, and the general public to use a more holistic lens in understanding the persistence of copyright piracy in developing countries, shifting the blame from the moral defect of the traders to the current problematic copyright policy and enforcement structure, and the difficulty of crafting effective anti-piracy measures in a constantly evolving and advancing technological environment.

The Technology of Cake Making (Hardcover, 6th ed. 1997): A.J. Bent, E.B. Bennion, G.S.T. Bamford The Technology of Cake Making (Hardcover, 6th ed. 1997)
A.J. Bent, E.B. Bennion, G.S.T. Bamford
R7,012 Discovery Miles 70 120 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The popularity of the 1973 fifth edition of The Technology of Cake Making has continued in many of the English-speaking countries throughout the world. This sixth edition has been comprehensively revised and brought up to date with new chapters on Cream, butter and milkfat products, Lactose, Yeast aeration, Emulsions and emulsifiers, Water activity and Reduced sugar Eggs and egg products, Baking fats, and lower fat goods. The chapters on Sugars, Chemical aeration, Nuts in confectionery, Chocolate, Pastries, Nutritional value and Packaging have been completely rewritten. The increased need for the continuous development of new products does not of necessity mean that new technology has to be constantly introduced. Many of the good old favourites may continue to be produced for many years and they form suitable 'bench marks' for new product development. The sixth edition introduces the use of relative density to replace specific volume as a measure of the amount of aeration in a cake batter (the use of relative density is in line with international agreement). Specific volume is kept as a measurement of baked product volume since the industry is comfortable with the concept that, subject to an upper limit, an increase in specific volume coincides with improvement in cake quality.

Bernardo Buarque De Hollanda, Luiz Guilherme Burlamaqui
R3,886 Discovery Miles 38 860 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book provides an historical overview of the formation of sports media in Latin America and its role in the construction of the political history of Latin American sport. The sports press was a privileged observer of the development of modern sports, but it was also a key factor in the making of professional sports in Latin America. Most of the literature on sport in Latin America treats the sports press as an historical source, rarely taking it as an object of study in itself. However, the development of sports in the region is connected to national and state-building processes and the role of media narratives is crucial to understanding how sports participate in those processes. Spanning the globalization of football in the late nineteenth century to the shift promoted by television in the 1970s, the chapters survey the historical development of sports media in Latin America. Representing ten countries, the contributors follow a framework that presents the press not as a passive narrator of the sports phenomenon, but as a social agent of the sports field. This book is of use to those interested in the history of sports and the media, and it will be a good resource for undergraduates taking courses on Sports History, Latin American History, Sports Management, and Journalism and Communication.
