A tribute to the pioneers of oil exploration in Indonesia (1850-1898). Using authentic reports, diaries, relevant texts, personal notes and pictures, Poley brings to life the heroic efforts of Reerink (Cheribon, W. Java), Zijlker and Kessler (Deli, NE Sumatra), Stoop (Surabaya and Rembang, E Java), Menten (Kutei, E Kalimantan), Kessler and IJzerman (Palembang, SE Sumatra), and their crews. They faced almost insurmountable odds in many locations: an impenetrable, cruel jungle, an inclement climate, tropical diseases, technical mishaps, financial restrictions, and, last but not least, government and legal constraints. There was no geological science to guide them, and drilling technology was still in its infancy. Yet it was their vision and perseverance which finally put Indonesia on the world map of oil-producing nations, and which contributed materially to the development of today's life of luxury. Much of the present text and several of the pictures are here presented for the first time to the general public.

Among these tools and theories, the substance-field theory gives a structured way of representing problems, the patterns of evolution show the lifecycle of technical systems, the contradiction matrix tells you how to resolve technical contradictions, using the forty principles that describe common ways of improving technical systems. For example, if you want to increase the strength of a device, without adding too much extra weight to it, the contradiction matrix tells you that you can use "Principle 1: Segmentation," or "Principle 8: Counterweight," or "Principle 15: Dynamicity," or "Principle 40: Composite Materials. " I really like two particular ones: "Principle 1: Segmentation," and Principle 15: Dynamicity. " "Segmentation" shows how systems evolve from an initial monolithic form into a set of independent parts, then eventually increasing the number of parts until each part becomes small enough that it cannot be identified anymore.

Theory and Technology of Multiscale Dispersed Particle Gel for in-depth Profile Control systematically introduces concepts surrounding preparation principles and methods of DPG particles. The whole preparation process can be divided into two major stages: bulk gel crosslinking reaction period and DPG particle preparation period. The effects of bulk gel strength, shearing time, shearing rate and bulk gel-water ratio on PDPG particles are also systematically analyzed. Zirconium bulk gel, phenolic resin bulk gel, and organic-inorganic cross-linked bulk gel with short gelation time on the ground are introduced, along with gelation properties, gelation influencing factors, thermal stability and applicable conditions. This book systematically describes the theory and technology of multiscale dispersed particle gel which shows promise as an acceptable alternative to conventional water technologies needed for enhanced oil recovery in high water cut mature oilfields.

Magnetotellurics is finding increasing applications for imaging electrically conductive structures below the Earths surface - in both industrial and academic research projects. In Models and Methods of Magnetotellurics the authors provide a systematic approach to understanding the modern theory of ill-posed problems which is essential to making confident meaningful interpretations of magnetotelluric and magnetovariational soundings. The interpretation is conducted in an interactive way, including the hypotheses tests and successive partial inversions with priority on the tippers, magnetic tensors and impedance-phases, which keeps out the destructive static effects of near-surface inhomogeneities. The efficiency of the interpretation is exemplified by new geoelectric models of the Baikal rift zone and the Cascadian subduction zone.

Coal is the commodity that powered the technologies that made the modern world. It also brought about unique communities marked by a high degree of social solidarity and self-help. Mining was central to working class life, drawing rural populations into industrial labour, but it often took place in picturesque landscapes, so that its black spoil heaps became a central symbol of the degradation of pastoral life by the demands of an extractive industry. Throughout Europe and the USA photographers have pictured the characteristic landscapes of the industry, and continue to do so as strip mining devastates huge areas of land. Not only landscape photography but also documentary, portraiture, photojournalism and art photography have been used in order to portray mines and miners. This book presents three interlinked strands of investigation. The first is the way in which the production of coal created paradigmatic communities grounded in particular landscapes. The second concerns the role of photography in exploring, delineating and critiquing mining communities. This in turn involves an examination of the aesthetic and social characteristics of a number of genres of photography. Lastly, it considers the growth and decline of these sites, the geographic shift of the industry to other places, and the re-presentation of traditional localities through the lens of the heritage industry and industrial tourism.
