The higher education sector is being disrupted through the effect that technological innovations have on the educational market. As digital and mobile technologies are developing further, higher education institutions must embrace these developments to meet the needs of their learners and to not become irrelevant. In higher education, disruptive effects are mainly visible on a program/product level, with an increasing number of programs including some element of online education. Disruptive effects also become evident on a pedagogical level, where student engagement, collaboration and social learning, gamification and serious games, competency-based learning, teacher training, and overcoming geosocial divides are high on the agenda. This book considers the effect of online elements and their design on university business models and internationalization, course design, massive open online courses (MOOCs), and the scalability of online programs. It also explores how higher education institutions across the globe respond and react to the challenges and opportunities evolving in online education.
A free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere: this is the
goal of the Khan Academy, a passion project that grew from an
ex-engineer and hedge funder's online tutoring sessions with his
niece, who was struggling with algebra, into a worldwide
phenomenon. Today millions of students, parents, and teachers use
the Khan Academy's free videos and software, which have expanded to
encompass nearly every conceivable subject; and Academy techniques
are being employed with exciting results in a growing number of
classrooms around the globe.
It is widely recognized that online and e-learning is no longer an
exclusive approach used only in distance education and in isolation
from traditional education programmes. A real difficulty facing
educators and trainers is how to integrate these new learning
methods and embed them in established and existing forms of
learning, teaching or training.

* Investigates the origins of formalization, its types and phases, and its applications to a variety of classroom-based and online learning formats. * Accounts for the growth of learning experiences driven by artificial intelligence, algorithms, surveillance, and other technology-based enhancements. * Explores the contradictions between formalization and progress in higher education.
Digital Futures for Learning offers a methodological and pedagogical way forward for researchers and educators who want to work imaginatively with "what's next" in higher education and informal learning. Today's debates around technological transformations of social, cultural and educational spaces and practices need to be informed by a more critical understanding of how visions of the future of learning are made and used, and how they come to be seen as desirable, inevitable or impossible. Integrating innovative methods, key research findings, engaging theories and creative pedagogies across multiple disciplines, this book argues for and explores speculative approaches to researching and analysing post-compulsory and informal learning futures - where we are, where we might go and how to get there.

Offers librarians an authoritative overview of the full spectrum of significant issues and controversies related to open scholarship in a candid and fair-minded manner. There has long been a debate about openness in scholarship, and even the term itself continues to be debated. Openness is a complex and multidimensional concept, and its nature in scholarship continually evolves. One of the hindrances to the transition to greater openness in academia is this lack of clear understanding about how it fits into the practice of scholarly communication. To ensure that librarians as knowledge managers can better educate scholars about the benefits and challenges of open scholarship, Victoria Martin's The Complete Guide to Open Scholarship brings clarity to the concept of openness, tests assumptions concerning it, and strikes the right balance between breaking down complex ideas into simpler ones and honoring the reader's intelligence and previous knowledge of the subject. Readers will learn the history of openness in scholarship as well as several ways in which openness can be perceived. Drawing on specific examples, Martin discusses the most prominent scholarly models based on openness, barriers to openness, concerns about openness in scholarship, and the future of open scholarship. Uses scholarly literature, professional experience, and real-life examples to discuss openness Tackles barriers to openness and concerns about openness in scholarship Shows how openness fits into the full life cycle of scholarship, from idea creation to data collection and the distribution of final research results Interrogates the likely future of open scholarship
