One of Us Is Lying meets Lord of the Flies meets Fyre Fest in this
wickedly addictive and funny YA thriller. Rafi Francisco needs
something really special to put her true crime podcast on the map.
She sets her sights on River Stone, the hearthrob musician who rose
to stardom after the mysterious disappearance of his girlfriend.
Rafi lands herself a ticket to the exclusive Fly Fest, where River
will be the headliner. But when Rafi arrives on the Caribbean
island location of Fly Fest with hundreds of other influencers and
(very minor) celebrities, they quickly discover that the dream trip
is more of a nightmare. And it's not just confronting beauty
gurus-gone-wild and spotty WiFi. Soon, Rafi goes from fighting for
an interview to fighting for her life. And, as she gets closer to
River, she discovers that he might be hiding even darker secrets
than she suspected . . .
"The entire town is disguised," declared a French tourist of
eighteenth-century Venice. And, indeed, maskers of all
ranks--nobles, clergy, imposters, seducers, con men--could be found
mixing at every level of Venetian society. Even a pious nun donned
a mask and male attire for her liaison with the libertine Casanova.
In Venice Incognito, James H. Johnson offers a spirited analysis of
masking in this carnival-loving city. He draws on a wealth of
material to explore the world view of maskers, both during and
outside of carnival, and reconstructs their logic: covering the
face in public was a uniquely Venetian response to one of the most
rigid class hierarchies in European history. This vivid account
goes beyond common views that masking was about forgetting the past
and minding the muse of pleasure to offer fresh insight into the
historical construction of identity.
An account of Oxford-educated Nell Stroud's life in the circus. It
is also the story of the people of the circus, from the trapeze
artists and clowns to the high-wire acts and grooms, as Nell
reveals their commitment and expertise, and their hard,
marginalized lives. Following a terrible riding accident which left
her mother permanently brain-damaged, Nell ran away to the circus.
What she found there was a life which became more real to her than
the one she left behind. She found people who had sacrificed their
lives for their art, who worked in all weathers, perfecting some of
the most dramatic and beautiful acts she had ever seen. She found
third-generation show-people who travelled around forgotten parts
of Britain to bring their abstract, polished, multi-layered show to
ever-dwindling audiences. She found herself in an art form that may
soon be lost. Nell lived and worked among the circus people for
several years, but she is not one of them: she was not born in the
circus. In their words she is a "josser" a person in the circus
from the outside world.

Hemingway's passion for Spain and for the bullfight is renowned. In Death in the Afternoon he shares the sights, the sounds, the excitement and, above all, the knowledge which fuelled his passion for the 'the emotional and spiritual intensity and pure classic beauty that can be produced by a man, an animal, and a piece of scarlet serge draped on a stick.' First published in 1932, Death in the Afternoon remains a classic for its historical account of the Corrida, for the stories of the great matadors, their banderilleros and picadors - the men who live every day with death - and for the stories of the bulls whose bravery is the primal root of the bullfight. Death in the Afternoon also contains some of the finest short stories Hemingway ever wrote, inspired by the intense life as well as the inevitable death of those hot, violent afternoons.

Puppets of Nostalgia is the first major work in any Western
language to examine the ritual origins and religious dimensions of
puppetry in Japan. In a lucid and engaging style accessible to the
general reader, Jane Marie Law describes the "life, death, and
rebirth" of awaji ningyo shibai, the unique form of puppet theater
of Awaji Island that has existed since the sixteenth century.
Puppetry rites on Awaji helped to maintain rigid ritual purity
codes and to keep dangerous spiritual forces properly channeled and
appeased. Law conducted fieldwork on Awaji, located in Japan's
Inland Sea, over a ten-year period. In addition to being a detailed
history and ethnography of this ritual tradition, Law's work is, at
a theoretical level, a study of the process and meaning of
tradition formation, reformation, invention, and revitalization. It
will interest scholars in a number of fields, including the history
of religions, anthropology, cultural studies, ritual and theater
studies, Japanese studies, and social history. Focusing on the
puppetry tradition of Awaji Island, Puppets of Nostalgia describes
the activities of the island's ritual puppeteers and includes the
first English translation of their performance texts and detailed
descriptions of their rites. Because the author has lived on Awaji
during extended periods of research, the work includes fine
attention to local detail and nuanced readings of religious
currents in Japan that affect popular religious expression.
Illustrated throughout with rare photographs, the book provides an
in-depth view of a four-hundred-year-old tradition never so
thoroughly revealed to Western readers. Originally published in

The Glastonbury Festival is the largest performing arts festival
in the world, situated in the mythic Vale of Avalon, England. Now
in its thirty-ninth year, up to two hundred thousand festivalgoers
from all over the world will attend the festival over a four-day
period.
Venetia Dearden has been documenting the people of the
Glastonbury Festival since 2004. With the help of a professional
portable photographic studio, her aim was to single out individuals
and groups to capture the motives and personas that make up the
fabric of Glastonbury. The result is an intimate and unique set of
portraits that includes festivalgoers, stall holders, charity
workers, organizers, and many of the celebrity performers. The huge
volume of portraits generated over four years brilliantly captures
fleeting moments of serenity amidst the surreal, swirling insanity
that is Glastonbury.
The selection of performing artists in the book includes: Lily
Allen, Amy Winehouse, Paolo Nutini, James Morrison, Leonard Cohen,
Jay-Z, Shakin' Stevens, Jimmy Cliff, Joan Armatrading, Duffy,
Richard Ashcroft, Paul Weller, The Who, Manic Street Preachers,
Goldfrapp, Martha Wainwright, and many more.
Venetia Dearden, born 1975 in Somerset, England, has studied
anthropology at Edinburgh University and photojournalism at the
London College of Printing. She has documented social and
humanitarian issues, producing features and facilitating workshops
as a consultant for "Photovoice." Her work is published worldwide
in such publications as "Vogue," "Wallpaper," "The Sunday Times
Magazine," "W Magazine," "Harpers Bazaar," and "Stern," among many
others. In 2008, she published her first book, "Somerset Stories
Fivepenny Dreams" (Kehrer Verlag), portraying the region where she
grew up.
Living in a time when it was scandalous even to show a bit of
ankle, a small number of courageous women covered their bodies in
tattoos and traveled the country, performing nearly nude on
carnival stages. These gutsy women spun amazing stories for
captivated audiences about abductions and forced tattooing at the
hands of savages, but little has been shared of their real lives.
Though they spawned a cultural movement-almost a quarter of
Americans now have tattoos-these women have largely faded into
history. The Tattooed Lady uncovers the true stories behind these
women, bringing them out of the sideshow realm and into their
working class realities. Combining thorough research with more than
a hundred historical photos, this updated second edition explores
tattoo origins, women's history, circus lore, and includes even
more personal and professional details from modern tattooed ladies.
A fascinating read, The Tattooed Lady pays tribute to a group of
unique and amazing women whose legacy lives on.
