The last two decades have seen the development of a number of

understanding of message-production processes. Now it appears that
a "second generation" of theories is emerging, one that reflects
considerable conceptual advances over earlier models. "Message

"The Vocabulary of Modern French" provides a lively and comprehensive overview of the vocabulary of contemporary French: its historical sources, formal organization and social and stylistic functions. The author examines both the relation between social and lexical change, and attempts to intervene in the development of the French language, as well as covering external influences on the language, word formation, semantic change, and style and register. Each chapter is concluded with notes for further reading and suggestions for project work, specifically designed to increase awareness of lexical phenomena, and enable the student-reader to use lexicographic databases of all kinds. A detailed index directs the reader to initial definitions of key concepts, and makes for ease of reference to recurring topics. "The Vocabulary of" "Modern French" will be a key text for all students of modern French.
The idea that there once existed a language which perfectly and
unambiguously expressed the essence of all possible things and
concepts has occupied the minds of philosophers, theologians,
mystics and others for at least two millennia. This is an
investigation into the history of that idea and of its profound
influence on European thought, culture and history. From the early Dark Ages to the Renaissance it was widely
believed that the language spoken in the Garden of Eden was just
such a language, and that all current languages were its decadent
descendants from the catastrophe of the Fall and at Babel. The
recovery of that language would, for theologians, express the
nature of divinity, for cabbalists allow access to hidden knowledge
and power, and for philosophers reveal the nature of truth.
Versions of these ideas remained current in the Enlightenment, and
have recently received fresh impetus in attempts to create a
natural language for artificial intelligence. The story that Umberto Eco tells ranges widely from the writings
of Augustine, Dante, Descartes and Rousseau, arcane treatises on
cabbalism and magic, to the history of the study of language and
its origins. He demonstrates the initimate relation between
language and identity and describes, for example, how and why the
Irish, English, Germans and Swedes - one of whom presented God
talking in Swedish to Adam, who replied in Danish, while the
serpent tempted Eve in French - have variously claimed their
language as closest to the original. He also shows how the late
eighteenth-century discovery of a proto-language (Indo-European)
for the Aryan peoples was perverted to support notions of racial
superiority.
To this subtle exposition of a history of extraordinary
complexity, Umberto Eco links the associated history of the manner
in which the sounds of language and concepts have been written and
symbolized. Lucidly and wittily written, the book is, in sum, a"
tour de force" of scholarly detection and cultural interpretation,
providing a series of original perspectives on two thousand years
of European History. The paperback edition of this book is not available through Blackwell outside of North America.

During the last 10 years, more and more linguistic and
psycholinguistic research has been devoted to the study of
discourse and written texts. Much of this research deals with the
markers that underline the connections and the breaks between
clauses and sentences plus the use of these markers -- by adults
and children -- in the production and comprehension of oral and
written material. In this volume, major observations and
theoretical views from both sides of the Atlantic are brought
together to appeal to a wide range of linguists, psychologists, and
speech therapists.
Psychological research into human cognition and judgment reveals a
wide range of biases and shortcomings. Whether we form impressions
of other people, recall episodes from memory, report our attitudes
in an opinion poll, or make important decisions, we often get it
wrong. The errors made are not trivial and often seem to violate
common sense and basic logic. A closer look at the underlying
processes, however, suggests that many of the well known fallacies
do not necessarily reflect inherent shortcomings of human judgment.
Rather, they partially reflect that research participants bring the
tacit assumptions that govern the conduct of conversation in daily
life to the research situation. According to these assumptions,
communicated information comes with a guarantee of relevance and
listeners are entitled to assume that the speaker tries to be
informative, truthful, relevant, and clear. Moreover, listeners
interpret the speakers' utterances on the assumption that they are
trying to live up to these ideals.
In 1975 Harvard philosopher Hilary Putnam published a paper called "The Meaning of 'Meaning'", in which he challenged orthodox views in the philosophy of language and the philosophy of mind. The article's Twin Earth thought experiment was simple, but the philosophical conclusions deriving from it - about the nature of meaning and reference, of thoughts, of knowledge - were profound. The philosophical community responded quickly, in full force, and from every possible direction, and has kept it up ever since. Now, on the twentieth anniversary of the publication of Putnam's classic paper, the editors have collected the very best of the writing on the subject of Twin Earth by the leading contemporary philosophers. In addition to reprinting essays by such well-known contemporary philosophers as John Searle, Daniel Dennett, and others, this volume reprints Putnam's original essay and includes a completely new Introduction by Putnam, written expressly for this collection. This volume will acquaint novice philosophers with one of the most important debates in twentieth-century philosophy, and will provide seasoned readers with a useful compendium of writing on essential questions in the philosophies of language and mind.
First published in 1997, this book addresses the question: What is the interpretation of English there-existential construction? One of the principal goals is to develop an interpretation for the construction that will specifically address other properties of the postcopular DP. After outlining the problem, the author goes on to present a syntactic motivation for the claim that the postcopular DP is the sole complement to the existential predicate, as well as for the claim that the optional final phrase is a predictive adjunct. In chapter 3 the interpretation for the basic existential construction is developed and then compared to analyses that take the postcopular DP to denote an ordinary individual or a generalised quantifier of individuals. This analysis is then augmented to account for the contribution of the final XP and shows how the predicate restriction can be derived from a more general condition on depictive/circumstantial VP-adjuncts. The final chapter contain some speculative discussion of the broader implications of the proposal in the context of data such as "list" existential and "presentational-there" sentences.
Vagueness in law leads to indeterminacies in legal rights and obligations in many cases. The book defends that claim and explains its implications for legal theory. Vague language is the book's focus, but vagueness is not merely a linguistic feature of law. Law is necessarily vague. That fact seems to threaten the coherence of the ideal of the rule of law. The book defends a new, coherent articulation of that ideal.
This volume presents twenty-two uncollected philosophical essays by Sir Peter Strawson, one of the leading philosophers of the second half of the twentieth century. Such arts have become increasingly prestigious in our technocratic
society. Since Aristotle, the art of rhetoric was conceived as a
loosely structured "practical" art thought to be limited in the
extent to which it could mimic more precise subject matters. The
art of rhetoric has been controversial since classical times, but
its status has sunk even lower since the industrial revolution -- a
point when civic cultures began to cede authority and control to
the cultures of specialized experts. Many sympathizers of rhetoric
have resisted its decline by calling for a civic art of public

Inferentialism is a philosophical approach premised on the claim that an item of language (or thought) acquires meaning (or content) in virtue of being embedded in an intricate set of social practices normatively governed by inferential rules. Inferentialism found its paradigmatic formulation in Robert Brandom's landmark book Making it Explicit, and over the last two decades it has established itself as one of the leading research programs in the philosophy of language and the philosophy of logic. While Brandom's version of inferentialism has received wide attention in the philosophical literature, thinkers friendly to inferentialism have proposed and developed new lines of inquiry that merit wider recognition and critical appraisal. One of the most important philosophers of recent times, Elizabeth Anscombe wrote books and articles on a wide range of topics, including the ground-breaking monograph Intention. In the past decades, quotation theories have developed roughly along three lines-quotation types, meaning effects, and theoretical orientations toward the semantics/pragmatics distinction. Currently, whether the quoted expression is truth-conditionally relevant to the quotational sentence, and if there is a truth-conditional impact, whether it is generated via semantic or pragmatic processes, have become the central concerns of quotation studies. In this book, quotation is clearly defined for the first time as a constituent embedded within yet distinctive from the quotational sentence. Also, as the first monograph to address the semantics/pragmatics boundary dispute over quotation, it argues that the semantic content of quotation amounts to its contribution to the intuitive truth-conditional content of the quotational utterance via two modes of presentation, which are incarnated in the functioning of quotation marks and manifested as use and mention. The use/mention-based analysis in this book can shed light on the semantic theorizing of other metalinguistic phenomena, while the semantics/pragmatics perspective will provide methodological implications for other relevant studies. The new conception of quotation and thought-provoking analysis on use/mention, truth-conditional pragmatics, and the semantics/pragmatics boundary in this book will appeal to scholars and students in philosophy of language and linguistics. It will also serve as a clear guide to the current state of quotation studies and how to formulate a semantic theory of quotation.
