Photojournalism Disrupted addresses the unprecedented disruptions
in photojournalism over the last decade, with a particular focus on
the Australian news media context. Using a mixed methods approach,
the book assesses the situation facing press photographers and
their employers in the supply of professional imagery for news
storytelling. Detailed qualitative case studies looking at special
events and crisis reporting complement a longitudinal study of
sourcing practices around everyday events. Additionally, interviews
with industry professionals offer insights into how news
organizations are managing significant structural change.
Ultimately, the book argues that photojournalism is being reshaped
in line with wider industrial disruptions that have led to the
emergence of a highly casualized workforce. As a comprehensive
study of contemporary photojournalism practices, Photojournalism
Disrupted is ideal for scholars and students internationally, as
well as (photo)journalists and media professionals.
A well-known naturalist, forester and nature photographer, Don
MacCaskill died in May, 2000 while out for a walk in the forest he
loved, his camera as ever at the ready. Faced with a collection of
between three and four thousand transparences, his wife, Bridget
felt that so many of these were outstanding examples of both a
gifted photographer and a dedicated naturalist, that some should be
made available to others interested in similar pursuits. It quickly
became apparent that they also formed a kind of photographic
autobiography of the man himself, his concern for nature and his
need to try to demonstrate, through his photography, the
responsibility of Man to that natural world of which he is a part.
Don's 'mate' in most of his endeavours (and a keen naturalist
herself), Bridget has put together a book of stunning photography,
with text that gives the reader a delightful taste of Nature
throughout the seasons and an appreciation of the nature
photographer's tasks over the year. The whole work is complemented
by the poetry of Jim Crumley, each poem inspired by one of Don's
photographs. 'He was a professional forester and a brilliant
self-taught naturalist and wildlife photographer. Above all, from
our point of view, he could communicate his enthusiasm to
others...a huge portfolio of nature photographs of the highest
quality. Now we are able to share some of them with her [Bridget].
What I find uncanny, is that in writing the text, she has found and
reproduced Don's distinctive 'voice'. Extract from the Foreword by
Julian Pettifer.

This is a lavish pictorial record produced in collaboration with
the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG). It features 200 unique
photographs taken by Isabella Bird that transport the reader to the
China of the late 19th century. It includes supporting text by
travel photography expert Debbie Ireland. Ammonite Press is proud
to collaborate with the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) in
celebrating the achievements of Isabella Bird in this lavish
pictorial record of her last great journey through China, in the
closing years of the 19th century, with supporting text by travel
photography expert Debbie Ireland. Bird was in her mid-sixties when
she undertook her travels, to a land that was largely unknown and
largely misunderstood in the West, where a woman travelling alone
was greeted with incredulity and, occasionally, hostility. The
highlight of her visit was journeying by boat and sedan chair to
make a major tour of the valley of the Yangtze River and much
beyond, right up to the border with Tibet.
The First World War was the first truly global conflict which left
its mark on every nation of the world. Few communities or families
escaped its devastating reach with many mourning the loss of entire
generations. Those that returned often refused to speak of their
experiences and today we often see the same old images or newsreel
footage to give us an insight of the life experienced in the 'Great
War'. Stereo photography and stereo viewers had been something of a
craze for the Victorians, most of whom would never see for
themselves the magnificence of far off and exotic locations from
around the globe. Stereo photography was an amazing technology that
didn't just allow them to see a view but to immerse themselves in
that location as if they were there themselves. By the time of the
First World War many of the more affluent households would have had
a stereo viewer and some stereoscopic cards to keep themselves
amused. As the war began, a number of companies were already busy
capturing the world in stereo for the enjoyment and education of
their customers. As hostilities increased they scrambled to get the
best photographs to record the war. This book is a collection of
some of those photographs presented both as original stereo pairs
for those with a suitable viewer and as anaglyph images suitable
for viewing with the supplied glasses. They offer a unique
photographic journey through the war that documents its bloody
progression and allows us to glimpse first hand, a realistic view
only previously available to those that were there. (Please note
that it's important when viewing the images that the glasses are
worn with the Red lens over the left eye and the Blue lens over the
right eye).
From the time The Big Penis Book was published, readers anticipated
The Big Book of Pussy. Granted, perhaps not the same readers, but
the seed had been planted and the calls and letters began flowing
in. Once they had that long-awaited book, some found themselves
overwhelmed by the variety and abundance, as well as the sheer size
of the book. As one reviewer wrote, "let's give credit to Amazon
for...the strength of its packaging. Who wants a 2-ton pussy book
being 'exposed' for the mailman...?" For those who worry that there
can be too much of a good thing, we've made a pared down, "best of"
edition of The Big Book of Pussy, a petite little kitten of a book
that puts those in-your-face photos in proper perspective. Now you
can follow the evolution of genital exposure with ease, through 100
years of photos with one thing in common: the exhibitionistic
pleasure with which the models present their feminine pulchritude.
And with over 150 photos-36 new to this book-of the pet we love to
pet, no bothersome text to interrupt the flow, all in a package
that won't stress the mailman's back, we just may have produced the
perfect self-gifter of the year.

Photographer Deirdre O'Callaghan has produced an unsettling but
ultimately engaging document of the residents at Arlington House,
Europe's largest men's refuge. Built in the early 20th century for
intinerant Irish workers, many of the residents have been displaced
from their home country and suffer from mental and physical
disabilities, largely alcoholism. O'Callaghan's work reveals the
humour and companionship the men derive from their shared
experience, both in the refuge and on their sponsored return trips
to Ireland. This book won the ICP Infinity Award for best
publication in 2003 and the Rencontres de la Photographie D'Arles
award for best book. It was also included in the PDN Photography
Annual 2003 in the best books category
‘I want to make a picture that could stand on its own, regardless of what it was a picture of. I’ve never been a bit interested in the fact that this was a picture of a blues musician or a street corner or something.’ – William Eggleston William Eggleston’s photographs are special for their eccentric, unexpected compositions, playfulness, implied narrative and, above all, his portrayals of people. Over the past half-‐century he has created a powerful and enduring body of work featuring friends and family, musicians, artists and others. Eggleston frequented the 1970s Memphis club scene, developing friendships and getting to know musicians, including Ike Turner, Alex Chilton and others. His fascination with the nightclub culture resulted in the experimental video Stranded in Canton (2005), which chronicles visits to bars in Memphis, Mississippi, and New Orleans. At the same time he encountered and photographed the likes of Dennis Hopper, Eudora Welty and Walter Hopps – and for a brief moment Eggleston even entered the Warhol Factory scene, dating the Warhol protg, Viva. William Eggleston: Portraits accompanies the first exhibition to explore Eggleston’s pictures of people. Works included span his career from the 1950s through to his well-‐known portraits of the 1970s to the present day. The catalogue includes an essay, chronology and beautifully reproduced exhibition plates, as well as a series of revealing interviews with Eggleston and his close family members, conducted in Memphis by exhibition curator Phillip Prodger.

In 2015 portraits by Dr John Adamson were displayed at the National
Museum of Scotland exhibition Photography: A Victorian Sensation.
The audience response to these powerful works was such that this
book has been produced, the first devoted to placing his work in
its historical context and to acquainting a new audience with his
work which, for conservation reasons, cannot be displayed all the
time. Dr Adamson (1809-70) was the older brother of the better
known Robert Adamson (1821-48), famous for his pioneering
photography work with D. O. Hill. John Adamson remained an amateur;
his photography had to be fitted in around his busy medical
practice in St Andrews. The photographs are drawn mainly from two
extremely early and significant albums, presented to the Museum in
the 1940s. An Appendix has technical information on, for example:
camera obscura, lenses, daguerreotype, calotype, the albumen
process, and the collodian negative process.
The first book by one of the most in-demand photographers of our
time, Holding Space shares one hundred stunning photographs of
queer, inter-racial couples, with first-person text about their
relationships in this current time period. After the May 2020
murder of George Floyd, and during the Covid pandemic, photographer
Ryan Pfluger set out to capture queer, inter-racial couples across
the US. It was (and is) a time of intense upheaval and reckoning
and Ryan wanted to capture that in the lives and on the bodies of
these friends and strangers. The photographs, and the people in
them, can be startling in their vulnerability, playful in their
poses, and tender to the core. The interviews produce a range of
short, revealing stories about the couples.
American Geography is the visual record of Magnum photographer Matt
Black's five-year, 100,000-mile road trip across 46 states of the
United States, plus Puerto Rico. It examines the conditions of
powerlessness, prejudice and pragmatism among America's poor. The
project originated in Matt Black's exploration of his own home town
in California's rural Central Valley - a place that has been called
'the other California' - where one third of the population lives in
poverty. Travelling out from that location in 2015, he went on to
visit designated 'poverty areas' - places with poverty rates of
above 20% as defined by the US census. He found that, rather than
being anomalies, 'poverty areas' are never more than two-hour's
drive apart. They are woven throughout the fabric of the country,
yet are cut off from the 'land of opportunity'. Matt Black's
compelling black and white photographs, from which one can trace a
line back to the FSA Photographers of the 1930s and 1940s such as
Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange, are accompanied by his own
travelogue - an eclectic combination of observations, overheard
conversations in cafes and city buses, diner menus, bus timetables,
historical facts and echoes from daily news reports - which enrich
the vivid portrait of these 'states of un-America.' With 100
illustrations in colour
From the frontlines of the war in Ukraine comes this compelling
collection of 200+ images from world-class photographers that
captures the humanity, perseverance, and determination of the
nation's fight for freedom and independence against all odds. "What
happened to Ukraine after Moscow's invasion? Look no further. The
photographs in this book are by some of the world's best
photographers, and provide an unflinching look at the hell wrought
by Russia. This is extraordinary and vital work." - Pulitzer
Prize-winning journalist David Hume Kennerly. Portfolios from some
of the most respected photojournalists of our time: Carol Guzy,
four-time Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist. Lynsey Addario,
Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist and New York Times
bestselling author. Paula Bronstein, award-winning photojournalist
and Pulitzer Prize finalist. Justyna Mielnikiewicz, award-winning
photojournalist. Svet Jacqueline, award-winning photojournalist.
Moving essays, published in both English and Ukrainian, by:
Foreword by the Ukrainian ambassador to the United States, Oksana
Markarova. Markarova provides an overview of how this war has
shaken her country and what democracy and freedom mean to her
people. Award-winning Ukrainian author Andrey Kurkov. Ukraine's
most famous living writer, Kurkov provides an emotional, heartfelt
reflection on what's happening to his country in relation to the
pictures displayed in the book. Pulitzer Prize winner and personal
photographer to President Gerald Ford, David Hume Kennerly.
Kennerly speaks to the emotional and physical risk photojournalists
take in covering war alongside their mission to show truth. As
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said in his address to U.S.
Congress, Russia "went on a brutal offensive against our values,
basic human values. It threw tanks and planes against our freedom,
against our right to live freely in our own country, choosing our
own future, against our desire for happiness, against our national
dreams, just like the same dreams you have, you Americans."
Relentless Courage delivers a gripping, visual portfolio of images
that remind us of our shared humanity, what is right, and what's at
stake when independence and freedom come under attack.

Janet Stone's photograph albums feature informal portraits from the
mid-twentieth century of many of the leading cultural figures and
personalities of the day. The wife of the distinguished engraver
Reynolds Stone established a kind of literary salon in the idyllic
setting of the Old Rectory at Litton Cheney in West Dorset. Here
their wide circle of friends could visit, work and flourish as
Janet photographed them. Included between these pages are portraits
of Benjamin Britten, Peter Pears, John Piper, Iris Murdoch, John
Bayley, C. Day-Lewis, Jill Balcon, Kenneth Clark, Freya Stark,
Siegfried Sassoon, Willa Muir, Sylvia Townsend Warner and Frances
Partridge as well as Janet's husband Reynolds and her family.
Although not a technical photographer, Janet instinctively knew the
best moment to click the shutter, thus often capturing her subjects
off-guard and at their most informal. In this way we see picnics by
the tennis court, John Bayley trying on a headscarf, or a young
Daniel Day-Lewis dressed up as a knight. Others are portrayed
reading or relaxing in the gardens, drink in hand. These unique
portraits give a beguiling insight into a special set of
circumstances: an idyllic place and time and a group of people
drawn together by two contrasting but complimentary personalities,
the shy genius of Reynolds and the outgoing style and glamour of
Janet Stone.
**THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER** A deeply moving and brilliantly
idiosyncratic visual book of days by the National Book
Award-winning author of Just Kids and M Train. More than 365 images
chart Smith’s singular aesthetic - inspired by her wildly popular
Instagram In 2018, without any plan or agenda for what might happen
next, Patti Smith posted her first Instagram photo: her hand with
the simple message “Hello Everybody!” Known for shooting with
her beloved Land Camera 250, Smith started posting images from her
phone including portraits of her kids, her radiator, her boots, and
her Abyssinian cat, Cairo. Followers felt an immediate affinity
with these miniature windows into Smith’s world, photographs of
her daily coffee, the books she’s reading, the graves of beloved
heroes - William Blake, Dylan Thomas, Sylvia Plath, Simone Weil,
Albert Camus. Over time, a coherent story of a life devoted to art
took shape, and more than a million followers responded to
Smith’s unique aesthetic in images that chart her passions,
devotions, obsessions, and whims. Original to this book are vintage
photographs: anniversary pearls, a mother’s keychain, and a
husband’s Mosrite guitar. Here, too, are never-before-seen photos
of life on and off the road, train stations, obscure cafés, a
notebook always nearby. In wide-ranging yet intimate daily
notations, Smith shares dispatches from her travels around the
world. With 365 photographs, taking you through a single year, A
Book of Days is a new way to experience the expansive mind of the
visionary poet, writer, and performer. Hopeful, elegiac, playful -
and complete with an introduction by Smith that explores her
documentary process - A Book of Days is a timeless offering for
deeply uncertain times, an inspirational map of an artist’s life.
