Polymers for Energy Storage and Delivery - Polyelectrolytes for Batteries and Fuel Cells (Hardcover): Kirt A. Page, Christopher... Polymers for Energy Storage and Delivery - Polyelectrolytes for Batteries and Fuel Cells (Hardcover)
Kirt A. Page, Christopher L. Soles, James Runt
R5,560 Discovery Miles 55 600 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Polymeric materials have been and continue to be a focus of research in the development of materials for energy conversion, storage and delivery applications (fuel cells, batteries, photovoltaics, capacitors, etc.). Significant growth in this field started in the early 1990s and has continued to grow quite substantially since that time. Polymeric materials now have a prominent place in energy research.
For polymers, particularly polyelectrolytes, being used in fuel cell and battery applications, the importance of chain microstructure, chain dynamics, and nanoscale morphology on the overall performance characteristics of these materials cannot be overstated. As further advancements are made in polymer chemistry, control of nanostructure and characterization, there is a necessity for organized forums that foster cross-fertilization of knowledge and ideas between experts in polymer chemistry, chemical engineering, and polymer physics. This volume is the result of such a forum.
Most of the chapters in this book are based on a cross-section of the oral presentations in a symposium on Polymers for Energy Storage and Delivery held in March of 2011 as part of the 241st ACS National Meeting & Exposition (Anaheim, CA). The book contains 17 chapters presented in two parts. Part one focuses on polymers for battery applications and will cover theory and modeling, novel materials, and materials characterization. Professor Janna Maranas has provided an excellent review of the current state of understanding in polyelectrolytes as ion conductors in batteries. Part two will focus on polymers for fuel cells and will cover novel materials, transport, and materials characterization with a brief introduction into the history of polyelectrolytes for fuel cells and the classes of materials being pursued. Realizing the common role that nanostructure plays in both battery and fuel cell applications, Professor Moon Jeong Park and coworkers have also contributed a chapter demonstrating the role of nanostructured polyelectrolyte systems in energy storage and delivery. In addition, the editors are pleased to have a chapter-contributed by Professor Howard Wang and staff scientists of the NIST Center for Neutron Research-on the most state-of-art, in-situ neutron methods for studying lithium ion batteries.

Montana's brewing history stretches back more than 150 years to the state's days as a territory. But the art of brewing in Montana has come a long way since the frontier era. Today, nearly forty craft breweries span the Treasure State, and the quality of their output rivals the best craft beer produced anywhere in the country. Maybe it's because there's also a little piece of Montana in every glass, as the state's brewers pride themselves on using cold mountain water and locally sourced barley harvested from Montana's ample fields. From grain to glass, " Montana Beer: A Guide to Breweries in Big Sky Country" tells the story of the brewers and breweries that make the Treasure State's brew so special.

Forest Politics - The Evolution of International Cooperation (Hardcover): David Humphreys Forest Politics - The Evolution of International Cooperation (Hardcover)
David Humphreys
R3,997 Discovery Miles 39 970 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

'An important and timely book' from the Foreword by Stanley Johnson 'A complete and absorbing history of a decade of intense international politics offers many insights for future negotiators of sustainable solutions' Stephen Bass, International Institute for Environment and Development 'Skillfully navigates the jungle of forest politics, leaving us in no doubt that the verbal commitment to save the world's forests has yet to be translated into action on the ground. The way forward must clearly lie in political commitments and international cooperation if forests are to continue to preserve life on Earth' Francis Sullivan, World Wide Fund for Nature Global deforestation and its attendant processes - including soil degradation, climate change and the loss of biological diversity - emerged as international political issues during the 1980s, prompting politicians to seek consensus on programmes and policies for the conservation and sustainable management of forests. Yet global initiatives have been bedevilled by tensions between the North and South and between governments, industry, local communities and indigenous peoples. Meanwhile, rates of deforestation in the tropics are increasing, and international political efforts are demonstrably failing. Forest Politics carefully traces the evolution of international cooperation on forests, from the inception of the controversial International Tropical Timber Organization and the failed Tropical Forestry Action Programme in the mid-1980s, to the creation of the Intergovernmental Panel on Forests in the mid-1990s. The book also provides a detailed analysis of the negotiating stances of the parties involved in the divisive negotiations that rook place prior to the 1992 'Earth Summit' in Rio de Janeiro and the equally factious negotiations for the International Tropical Timber Agreement of 1994. It provides a fascinating insight into the nature of such processes, illustrating the difficulties that arise when concepts such as 'global commons' come into conflict with national sovereignty. Complete with annexes of important political documents, and making extensive use of primary source material and interviews with participants. Forest Politics presents case studies of all the major forest negotiations over the last 13 years. It is an essential reference point for policy makers, environmental campaigners and students, and required reading for all those who care about the future of the world's forests. David Humphreys is Research Fellow in Global Environmental Change at the Open University. Originally published in 1996

Tropical Deforestation - A socio-economic approach (Hardcover): C.J. Jepma Tropical Deforestation - A socio-economic approach (Hardcover)
C.J. Jepma
R3,994 Discovery Miles 39 940 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The depletion of the tropical rain forests has attracted considerable attention in recent times, and the serious consequences for the global biosphere are widely acknowledged. Yet deforestation continues apace, and in some areas (for example, southeast Asia) the very existence of the forests is seriously threatened. Contrary to popular belief, evidence suggests that local economic and living conditions are more significant in this than timber exploitation for exports to the Northern countries."Tropical Deforestation: A Socio-Economic Approach" offers a new perspective on the economic imperatives which encourage indigenous populations to encroach upon their own forests, and shows how action against deforestation must form part of a wider movement to improve both the living conditions of the local inhabitants and the durability of their national economies.Part One offers an overview of the processes surrounding deforestation, and an assessment of the current situation. Part Two analyses the land-use issues, and explains the socioeconomic imperatives in the affected regions. In an absorbing conclusion. Part Three guides the reader through a series of hypothetical policy scenarios, using a specially adapted economic computer model, to predict which combinations of policies and trade arrangements might bring about a more beneficial state of affairs.

The Driver in the Driverless Car: How Our Technology Choices Will Create the Future (Hardcover): Wadhwa The Driver in the Driverless Car: How Our Technology Choices Will Create the Future (Hardcover)
Wadhwa
R607 Discovery Miles 6 070 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Technology is advancing faster than ever-but for better or for worse? On the one hand, astonishing technology developments such as personalized genomics, self-driving cars, drones, and artificial intelligence could make our lives healthier, safer, and easier. On the other hand, these very same technologies could raise the specter of a frightening and alienating future-eugenics, a jobless economy, a complete loss of privacy, and an ever-worsening spiral of economic inequality. How can we make appropriate decisions about whether and how to adopt new technologies? Vivek Wadhwa and Alex Salkever propose that we ask three questions: Does the technology have the potential to benefit everyone equally? What are the risks and the rewards? Does the technology more strongly promote autonomy or independence? They subject a host of new and potential technologies to these questions, but ultimately it is up to the reader to make the final decision.

The Revaluation of Women's Work (Hardcover, 2nd edition): Sheila Lewenhak The Revaluation of Women's Work (Hardcover, 2nd edition)
Sheila Lewenhak
R2,595 Discovery Miles 25 950 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book provides a survey and analysis of the different ways in which women's work is valued throughout the world. It challenges the narrow definition of work as paid work, as that excludes so many of women's activities. It looks at ways in which women's worth has been consistently undervalued in industrial as well as non-industrial countries, in socialist as well as free-enterprise economies. These practices distort the national product of countries heavily dependent on women's labour, but, above all, they are among the most obvious marks of the exploitation of women. Technological changes are already altering established female/male divisions of labour. Transnational enterprises, often located in Special Economic Zones, are reducing differences between industrial and nonindustrial countries. Valuing women's work correctly, whether unpaid in the home or underpaid outside it, is part of the battle against discrimination and poverty. Men who do similar work also benefit. It is the crucial step towards the achievement of male/female equality. The book will be particularly valuable for those concerned with the issues, in trade unions, women's groups, international agencies and NGOs and for course in economics and social studies.

'MerryGold and The PeriodiCity Mysteries', the second in the 'MerryGold' series, takes place in the mythical kingdom of PeriodiCity and centers on one of the kingdom's loyal 'elementary' subjects, an inquisitive girl named MerryGold. Her curiosity in all things elemental makes her particularly suited to investigate all peculiar chemical phenomena in the kingdom. The present story begins with a gala ball thrown by King Helium and Queen Neon for all Elementarians, a suspicious phantasm of light and a quest for a special jewel to celebrate Queen Neon's birthday. MerryGold is driven to undertake a journey to understand the origins of the mysterious light; the King needs an adventurer to seek the Queen's jewel. So embarks MerryGold, at behest of the King, to the remote islands of Periodicity where a multitude of new adventures await her. One by one, she visits the Halogen Islands, enjoying many new friends and learning much about the tasks they carry out for the service of the King. When all seems lost concerning the unraveling of her own mystery, she finally discovers a vital clue that enables her to solve it. But alas, other curious phenomena are added to her list of things she must soon discover! Seeing past the superficial cloud of electrons and into the core of her atomic acquaintances, she is able ultimately to acquire not only the special jewel for the Queen, but also to unravel the mystery of the light phantasm that she encountered during the festive party of the King and Queen. The book is meant to teach the basics of chemical and physical observation, and that basic atoms and molecules interact in characteristic ways. While teaching chemical principles, the book draws in the reader into a fun adventure where atoms and molecules have personal qualities not so different from the scientists who might study them. This personification of atoms and molecules makes the topics more approachable to young readers and alerts older readers to the slight poetic license taken with regard to some details of the laws of nature. With each reading, the reader should pick up new ideas and concepts, developing an appreciation for general scientific thought processes. These basic principles, expressed by the atomic characters, foster a sense that the workings of material world are understandable to anyone interested in taking the journey. This particular adventure, in particular, has a special emphasis on the Halogen elements.

A Brief Introduction to the Rheology of Polymeric Fluids (Hardcover): Arkady I Leonov A Brief Introduction to the Rheology of Polymeric Fluids (Hardcover)
Arkady I Leonov
R1,766 Discovery Miles 17 660 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Polymer Rheology is a fundamental discipline underlying modern polymer processing. The term rheology could be generally defined as the science of deformation and flow for non-traditional materials that display a nonlinear combination of viscous, elastic and plastic effects, such as polymers, food stuffs, lubricating greases etc. The rheology of polymeric liquids is the most complicated part of general rheology. As any scientific discipline it consists of coupled theoretical and experimental parts. The most difficult part for the first studies of polymer rheology is the theory. This textbook attempts to overcome this difficulty and provide the readers with a balanced knowledge of modern types of continuum theories, experiments and some applications.
