It's the height of summer and the palace is full of ambassadors and
ladies from the Spanish court. When a visit to the famous St
Bartholomew's fair is planned to entertain the guests, Grace jumps
at the chance to get out for the day. Not everybody feels the same
though and there's a lot of superstision amongst the ladies about
the gypsies, fortune tellers and herbal medicine that will be at
the fair. When a mysterious fire at the fair leaves Lady Sarah
injured and a gypsy woman dead, it seems the ladies were right to
be worried. But was the fire started on purpose? And can Grace get
to the bottom of this mystery?
As simboliese “reisgenote” is enkele gedigte getoonset wat tematies aansluit by Joanita se eie verhale. Die “reisgenote” is tematies van aard, maar ook in die gesprek tussen tekste, musikale werke en die kunstenaars wat betrokke was by die projek.

A pitch-black, high-stakes international thriller that you won't be able to stop reading.
A Man, A Fire, A Corpse tells the story of Captain Amos Maneta: a man who was most often referred to as ‘The Top Cop of Soweto’; as written by his son Rofhiwa Maneta.
The book is a collection of the physical and metaphysical bruises collected by the author’s father in his 30-plus years of working in the police service.
Through his father’s story, Rofhiwa Maneta examines the relationship between police and the public. Maneta’s mix of journalism, remembered history, anecdote and autobiography further discusses the relationship between South Africa and violence; while taking a look at what it takes to be an honest policeman in a department whose groundwater is corruption and maladministration.
Both history and memoir, The Flight tells the story of Richard W.
"Dick" Bridges's heroic service in World War II. Bridges survived a
German attack on his plane, the Fascinatin' Witch, by parachuting
out of the exploding B-24. He escaped detection in Austria, became
the first American prisoner of war in Hungary, was sent to
Yugoslavia, escaped from his POW camp there, was sheltered by the
Partisans one step ahead of the Germans, and was finally airlifted
to safety in Italy by the British. Bridges's story, which seems
almost too astonishing to be true, went untold until after his
death in 2003, when his son, Tyler Bridges, pieced it together. The
younger Bridges's odyssey in search of his father's wartime
experiences connected him with the families of other crew members
aboard the Fascinatin' Witch and led him to retrace his father's
footsteps through Austria, Hungary, and the former Yugoslavia. With
his findings, Bridges has woven a story not only about World War II
and the bravery of this unique group of soldiers, but also about
fathers and sons, what can get lost in the gulf between
generations, and how patience and understanding can bridge that
gap.

Winner, 2017 CantoMundo Poetry Prize. Paraiso, the first book in
the new CantoMundo Poetry Series, which celebrates the work of
Latino/a poets writing in English, is a pilgrimage against sorrow.
Erupting from a mother's death, the poems follow the speaker as he
tries to survive his grief. Catholicism, family, good rum . . .
these help, but the real medicine happens when the speaker pushes
into the cloud forest alone. In a Costa Rica far away from touristy
beaches, we encounter bus trips over the cold mountains of the
dead, drug dealers with beautiful dogs, and witches with cell
phones. Science fuses with religion, witchcraft is joined with
technology, and eventually grief transforms into belief.
Throughout, Paraiso defies categorization, mixing its beautiful
sonnets with playful games and magic cures for the reader. In the
process, moments of pure life mingle with the aftermath of a death.
