Phonics for Pupils with Special Educational Needs is a complete,
structured, multisensory programme for teaching reading and
spelling, making it fun and accessible for all. This fantastic
seven-part resource offers a refreshingly simple approach to the
teaching of phonics, alongside activities to develop auditory and
visual perceptual skills. Specifically designed to meet the needs
of pupils of any age with special educational needs, the books
break down phonics into manageable core elements and provide a huge
wealth of resources to support teachers in teaching reading and
spelling. Book 6: Sound by Sound Part 4 focuses on surveying
complex sounds and their relationship with letters and letter
combinations. Each chapter explores a key sound (s/ l/ b&d/ o/
i/ u-e) as well as looking at consonants in greater detail and
contains over 40 engaging activities including sound story,
flippies, sound swap, word tech and spelling challenge. Thorough
guidance is provided on how to deliver each activity, as well a
lesson planner template, a handy list of high frequency words and
posters for teachers and teaching assistants to use to support
learning. Each book in the series gradually builds on children's
understanding of sounds and letters and provides scaffolded support
for children to learn about every sound in the English language.
Offering tried and tested material which can be photocopied for
each of use, this is an invaluable resource to simplify phonics
teaching for teachers and teaching assistants and provide fun new
ways of learning phonics for all children. This book is accompanied
by a companion resource, 'Phonics for Pupils with Complex SEND ',
to be used alongside the Phonics for Pupils with Special
Educational Needs programme. The activities from Books 1-6 of the
programme are adapted to be accessible for non-verbal pupils,
including AAC users, and those with physical disabilities.
These super-sized scenes act as a wonderful focal point for
everyone. Each large page features a digraph in a beautifully
illustrated scene, with so much to look at and find containing the
focus digraph. There are also clear illustrations of some of the
key vocabulary from the scene with word labels below. Quick
reminders of each of the Letterland spelling stories are included -
these stories can play a vital role in helping children remember
sounds and spelling patterns. Talk about each digraph together,
search for vocabulary and start to recognise and read whole words.

Adder's all set to start her new job at Badger's Cleaning Company.
But when she climbs a ladder for the first time, she quickly finds
she has no head for heights. Can anything help her overcome her
fears? Find out in this charming addition to the Phonics Readers
series.
In this volume prominent scholars, experts in their respective
fields and highly skilled in the research they conduct, address
educational and reading research from varied perspectives and
address what it will take to close the achievement gap-with
specific attention to reading. The achievement gap is redefined as
a level at which all groups can compete economically in our society
and have the literacy tools and habits needed for a good life.
Bringing valuable theoretical frameworks and in-depth analytical
approaches to interpretation of data, the contributors examine
factors that contribute to student achievement inside the school
but which are also heavily influenced by out-of-school factors-such
as poverty and economics, ethnicity and culture, family and
community stratifications, and approaches to measurement of
achievement. These out-of-school factors present possibilities for
new policies and practice. The overarching theme is that
achievement gaps in reading are complex and that multiple
perspectives are necessary to address the problem. The breadth and
depth of perspectives and content in this volume and its
conceptualization of the achievement gap are a significant
contribution to the field.
