No Outsiders: Everyone Different, Everyone Welcome - Preparing Children for Life in Modern Britain (Paperback): Andrew Moffat No Outsiders: Everyone Different, Everyone Welcome - Preparing Children for Life in Modern Britain (Paperback)
Andrew Moffat
R791 Discovery Miles 7 910 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

The No Outsiders programme promotes an ethos of inclusion and tolerance, and aims to prepare children for life in modern Britain. Expanding the scheme published in the 2015 book, No Outsiders in Our Schools, this book is designed to further support educators as they make the No Outsiders ethos part of their school culture at a time when messages of fear and division are rife. Written by a practising teacher whose work to promote equality has been globally celebrated, this book provides lesson plans for use in classes from EYFS to Year 6. Key features of the resource include: * plans for delivering the No Outsiders message through assemblies and classes, allowing for a flexible approach * recommendations for picture books that can be used to support messages of diversity and inclusion * a scheme of work designed to meet the requirements of the Equalities Act (2010) and support teachers as they prepare to implement the new Relationships Education curriculum (2020). It is the responsibility of primary schools to promote equality and diversity. This is a vital resource for all teachers and trainee teachers as they prepare children for a life where diversity is embraced and there is no fear of difference.

The Challenges of School Reform - Implementation, Impact, and Sustainability (Hardcover): Lewis C. Solmon, Kimberly Firetag... The Challenges of School Reform - Implementation, Impact, and Sustainability (Hardcover)
Lewis C. Solmon, Kimberly Firetag Agam, Citadelle Priagula
R2,818 Discovery Miles 28 180 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book, The Challenges of School Reform: Impact, Implementation, and Sustainability, explores why reforms todate have failed to live up to expectations, and it discusses promising practices and strategies for sustaining increased student achievement. This work expands on the ideas and themes discussed in the first two volumes in this series on education policy: The first book-Talented Teachers: The Essential Force for Improving Student Achievement-examines the importance of teacher quality. Years of research have repeatedly confirmed what we inferred to be true-outside of the home environment, the quality of a student's teacher has the strongest impact on learning. After talented teachers were found to be a powerful component for bettering education, the second book-Improving Student Achievement: Reforms that Work-introduces reform ideas and programs that positively impact both teacher quality and student work. Now, The Challenges of School Reform: Implementation, Impact, and Sustainability deepens these discussions by exploring the answers to questions regarding ensuring the longevity and sustained success of effective school reform.

Those Who Can, Teach - What It Takes To Make the Next Generation (Paperback): Andria Zafirakou Those Who Can, Teach - What It Takes To Make the Next Generation (Paperback)

'An amazing book . . . Read it gang, honestly' Zoe Ball 'I haven't read a book for a long time that so often had me close to tears' Observer 'Inspirational . . . You can call this good teaching; what it looks like is love' Evening Standard The powerful, inspiring story of Andria Zafirakou, 'the best teacher in the world', and what it takes to work on the frontlines of education today Arts teacher Andria Zafirakou was always a rule-breaker. At her inner-city London school where more than eighty languages are spoken, she would sense urgent needs; mending uniforms, calling social services, shielding vulnerable teens from gangs. And she would tailor each class to its pupils, fiercely believing in the power of art to unlock trauma, or give a mute child the confidence to speak. Time and again, she would be proved right. So in 2018, when Andria won the million-dollar Global Teacher Prize, she knew exactly where the money would go: back into arts education for all. Because today, the UK government's cuts and curriculum changes are destroying the arts, while their refusal to tackle the most dangerous threats faced by children - cyber-bullying, gang violence, hunger and deprivation - puts teachers on the safeguarding frontline. Andria's story is a rallying wake-up call that shows what life is really like for schoolchildren today, and a moving insight into the extraordinary people shaping the next generation. Praise for Andria Zafirakou: 'A magic combination of belief and compassion' Financial Times 'Andria Zafirakou should be an inspiration to all' i 'Zafirakou's generosity offers a gleam of hope in a world that can seem unremittingly dark' Guardian 'An amazing person . . . What struck me was just her sheer joy' Jeremy Vine, BBC Radio 2 'Where others might have given up, Andria has made it her mission to ensure [her students] get the best possible start in life' Daily Mail

Observing Gabby: Child Development and Learning, 0-7 Years (Paperback): Cath Arnold Observing Gabby: Child Development and Learning, 0-7 Years (Paperback)
Cath Arnold
R699 Discovery Miles 6 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is about Gabby, an inquisitive girl who leads her own learning very effectively with support from the adults in her life. The author, her grandmother, draws on seven years of data from diaries, photos and Gabby's own writing to consider her development and learning when cared for by both her parents and grandparents. Gabby builds on her experiences with her Latvian mother, English father and her elder sister as she faces and deals with transitions as she grows up. The chapters are presented in a chronological order as a 'running record' going from 0-1 year right through to 6-7 years and can be analysed through a range of theories and frameworks. With chapters considering theory and the data separately the reader can reach their own conclusions on child development before exploring the author's analyses. Each chapter also considers the relevance of Ofsted's Intent, Implementation and Impact framework and other theories and schemas. This book about one child's early development and learning is a fascinating insight into how young children learn for those studying or working in the early years field. It includes access to an online learning centre of video clips to bring the descriptions to life and provide further insight into Gabby's development. "This book is a testament to the power of quiet, attentive observation and its application to a range of disciplines beyond the therapeutic. 'Observing Gabby' will be of interest to Early Years practitioners who are keen to provide a setting conducive to holistic education, and those interested in the links between emotional well-being and learning." Sarah Fielding, Infant Observation "This carefully structured text will be helpful for anyone teaching or studying child development particularly with the addition of video materials to view alongside the book." Mary Briggs FRSA, CMathTeach, APECS, SFHEA, FCCT, Principal Lecturer and Programme Lead for Childhood and Education (ECS and Ed Studies), Oxford Brookes University, UK "This rich account of Gabby's early childhood development takes the reader on an inspiring journey." Shirley Allen, School of Health and Education, Middlesex University "I would heartily recommend this book to any early years practitioner, who wants to better understand child development, improve the quality of their child observations and to develop their skill in linking the two seamlessly." Andrea Layzell, Project Lead and Tutor, Bradford Birth to 19 Teaching School Alliance Dr Cath Arnold has worked in the field of Early Childhood for over 40 years, as a practitioner/teacher, researcher, lecturer and author. Her particular interests include child study; schemas and parental involvement. This is her fifth book focussing on close observation of the spontaneous actions of young children.

The Rise of Urban America (Hardcover, New Ed): Constantine McLaughlin Green The Rise of Urban America (Hardcover, New Ed)
Constantine McLaughlin Green
R6,749 Discovery Miles 67 490 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The rise of cities in the United States from the early seventeenth century to the 1960s is the subject of this sophisticated and witty appraisal by a Pulitzer Prize historian. Constance McLaughlin Green traces the forces - economic, political, social - that led to today's urban civilization, beginning with the growth of colonial seaports and local government, the rise of new cities that competed for wealth and power with the older cities, the spread of industrialization, transportation and communications that made complex city life possible. She discussed the influence of city life on art and architecture, the impact of depression and prosperity upon urban centres, and analyses present-day problems - race-relations, the population explosion, automation, the rise of suburbia, and the development of the 'megapolis' that links city with city in one vast urban interstate region. This book was first published in 1966.

Education and the City - Theory, History and Contemporary Practice (Hardcover, New Ed): Gerald Grace Education and the City - Theory, History and Contemporary Practice (Hardcover, New Ed)
Gerald Grace
R6,767 Discovery Miles 67 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

City schools, especially those attended by working class and ethnic minority pupils are teh catalysts of many significant issues in educational debate and policy making. They bring into sharp focus questions to do with class, gender and race relations in education; concepts of equality of opportunity and of social justice; and controversies about the wider political economic and social context of mass schooling.

America, Western Europe and Australia have all taken a keen interest in the problems of urban schooling. The contributors to this collectiona of original essays all share a concern about these problems, although they approach them from a wide range of theoretical and ideological positions.

Gerald Grace and his contributors criticis the current limitations of urban education as a field of study and they present a foundation for a more historically located and critically informed inquiry into problems, conflicts and contradictions in urban schooling. Part I presents contributions on theories of the urban. Part II focuses upon the history of urban education both in Britain and the USA. Part III discusses contemporary policy and practice with essays relating to education in inner city London and in New York City.

R4,629 Discovery Miles 46 290 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Equity in the City is a collection of nine studies of the way the results of public investment in urban services are shared out among city-dwellers. The essays describe the way services such as water supply, electricity, roads and parks are financed and they analyse the way certain residents receive benefits from the public purse while others don't. It examines the impact on planning and zoning and building regulation in terms of who gains the benefits from government. Equity and the city reveals scarce public resources are allocated. Reforming New Zealand Secondary Education - The Picot Report and the Road to Radical Reform (Hardcover): R. Openshaw Reforming New Zealand Secondary Education - The Picot Report and the Road to Radical Reform (Hardcover)
R. Openshaw

During the late 1980s, the report "Administering for Excellence" (the Picot Report), and the Labour Government's definitive policy response, "Tomorrow's Schools," ushered in a new era in New Zealand. In what was seen as a decisive stroke, New Zealand's 110 year old three-tiered education system was swept away to be replaced by a two-component system, consisting of a new Ministry of Education and individual learning institutions. This timely book argues that the New Zealand educational reforms were the product of longstanding unresolved educational issues that came to a head during the profound economic and cultural crisis of the 1970s and early 1980s. As such, they reflected a complex mixture of both right-wing and left-wing ideals, and local and international influences in which no single group emerged victorious. In thus viewing educational reform within the wider context of public policy making, this book aims to make a wider contribution to the global policy debate.

Vocationalisation of Secondary Education Revisited (Hardcover, 2005 ed.): Jon Lauglo, R. MacLean Vocationalisation of Secondary Education Revisited (Hardcover, 2005 ed.)
Jon Lauglo, R. MacLean
R4,223 Discovery Miles 42 230 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

ThiscasestudyreportprovidesageneraldescriptionandanalysisofGhana's efforts at diversifying its secondary school curriculum, and the lessons that might be learnedfrom this experience. The report focuses on the vocationa- sation policy of the 1987 education reforms. Not muchhas been written about the impact of vocationalised secondary education inGhana with the resultthat there is very little documentation on issues pertinent to TVE at that level. D- cussions with Ministry of Education (MOE) of?cialsrevealed that investment inthe technicalinstitute and polytechnic sector is currentlyof more immediate concern than investment in vocational secondary education-an indication of perhaps growing dissatisfaction with the vocationalised secondary education policies of the 1987 reforms. Ministry of?cials feltthat a few senior secondary schoolsneededtobespeciallydesignatedassecondarytechnicalorvocational, with the rest concentrating on providing general education. Furthermore, they argued that thiswould facilitate specialfunding of specially designated TVE secondary schoolsand thus improve theiref?ciency and effectiveness. A f- quentcriticismfromministryof?cialswasthattheseniorsecondarysectorwas still too narrowly focused on university requirements, thus undermining their ability to address the practical goalsof TVE. Some of the information sought by the terms of reference (TOR) of this study was not readily available partly because vocational secondary education had not attracted as much interest as, for example, basic education where s- eral reviews and studies have been conducted. Recent policy literature on TVE in Ghana re?ects concerns with the informal and formal vocational schools sector (Japan International Cooperation Agency/MOE, 2001). Also, docum- tation on implementation stages of vocational policies is dif?cult to ?nd.

Contemporary Perspectives On Language and Cultural Diversity in Early Childhood Education (Hardcover, New): Contemporary Perspectives On Language and Cultural Diversity in Early Childhood Education (Hardcover, New)
R2,813 Discovery Miles 28 130 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

A volume in Contemporary Perspectives in Early Childhood Education Series Editors Olivia N. Saracho and Bernard Spodek The purpose of the book series is to present reviews of current research in specific areas of early childhood education. Each volume is devoted to a particular area of the field. Within each volume scholars present reviews of research on particular aspects of the field of early childhood education. Each chapter summarizes the current research and provides an extended set of references which will facilitate readers in furthering their inquiries into research in that area. All contributions to each volume are juried, with an Editorial Board and additional scholars reviewing the draft chapters, suggesting ways that the chapters could be improved, and finally recommending them for publication. This process insures the quality of the contributions to the chapter and avoids the possibility of bias in the work, Recent findings suggest that young children's learning experiences are critical to their learning development, which has attracted the attention of researchers, scholars, and policy makers. Interest has focused on the early childhood policy and practice that can help improve the academic paths of children in poverty. Many of these children are from linguistically and culturally diverse families. The purpose of this volume is to review and summarize the current state of knowledge related to linguistically and culturally diverse children. It expanded cultural diversity to include social justice which can contribute knowledge in providing effective teacher preparation programs and high quality programs for linguistically and culturally diverse children.

Mathematics in Middle and Secondary School - A Problem Solving Approach (Hardcover): Alexander Karp, Nicholas Wasserman Mathematics in Middle and Secondary School - A Problem Solving Approach (Hardcover)
Alexander Karp, Nicholas Wasserman
R2,976 Discovery Miles 29 760 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The experience and knowledge acquired in teacher education courses should build important fundamentals for the future teaching of mathematics. In particular, experience in mathematical problem solving, and in planning lessons devoted to problem solving, is an essential component of teacher preparation. This book develops a problem solving approach and is intended to be a text used in mathematics education courses (or professional development) for pre-service or in-service middle and secondary school teachers. It can be used both in graduate and undergraduate courses, in accordance with the focus of teacher preparation programs. The content of the book is suited especially for those students who are further along in their mathematics education preparation, as the text is more involved with mathematical ideas and problem solving, and discusses some of the intricate pedagogical considerations that arise in teaching. The text is written not as an introduction to mathematics education (a first course), but rather as a second, or probably, third course. The book deals both with general methodology issues in mathematics education incorporating a problem solving approach (Chapters 1-6) and with more concrete applications within the context of specific topics - algebra, geometry, and discrete mathematics (Chapters 7-13). The book provides opportunities for teachers to engage in authentic mathematical thinking. The mathematical ideas under consideration build on specific middle and secondary school content while simultaneously pushing the teacher to consider more advanced topics, as well as various connections across mathematical domains. The book strives to preserve the spirit of discussion, and at times even argument, typical of collaborative work on a lesson plan. Based on the accumulated experience of work with future and current teachers, the book assumes that students have some background in lesson planning, and extends their thinking further. Specifically, this book aims to provide a discussion of how a lesson plan is constructed, including the ways in which problems are selected or invented, rather than the compilation of prepared lesson plans. This approach reflects the authors' view that the process of searching for an answer is often more important than the formal result.

Max Weber's Insights and Errors (Hardcover): Stanislav Andreski Max Weber's Insights and Errors (Hardcover)
Stanislav Andreski
R5,760 Discovery Miles 57 600 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Max Weber (1864-1920) is generally recognised as one of the founding fathers of modern sociology. His ideas continue to be discussed by sociologists and historians and much homage is paid to his contribution to knowledge. However, such is the awe which the breadth of his knowledge inspires that most general books about Weber contain summaries rather than criticism. This book is the first attempt to evaluate Weber's entire work in the light of historical knowledge available today and of contemporary analytic philosophy. Professor Andreski shows where Weber's true greatness lies, which of Weber's ideas are still valid, which need either correction or modification and which merit rejection. Andreski places Weber in his social and cultural context of the intellectual preeminence of German culture in the second half of the nineteenth century. He examines Weber's most famous theses on objectivity, methodological individualism, ethical neutrality; explanation versus understanding; ideal types; rationalisation; bureaucracy, charisma, power, law and religion; as well as the explanation of the rise of capitalism and uniqueness of Western civilization. Andreski concludes by considering what contemporary scholars should learn from Weber if they want to advance further. He argues that the most important lesson is that comparative study of history (including recent history) is the only method of giving empirical support to an examination of large-scale social processes or a general proposition about them. This book was first published in 1984.

"Based on the views of teenagers across Europe and in the Far East, this book argues that we need to reconsider how we judge schools and what they are for. It shows that the treatment of pupils in schools makes more difference to teenagers views on society, and on what it means to be fair, than it does to differences in attainment"--Provided by publisher.

Early Language Learning in Context - A Critical Socioeducational Perspective (Paperback): David Hayes Early Language Learning in Context - A Critical Socioeducational Perspective (Paperback)
David Hayes
R900 Discovery Miles 9 000 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This book critically analyses early school foreign language teaching policy and practice, foregrounding the influence of the socioeducational and cultural context on how policies are implemented and assessing the factors which either promote or constrain their effectiveness. It focuses on four Asian contexts - Malaysia, South Korea, Sri Lanka and Thailand - while providing a discussion of policy and practice in Canada and Finland as a comparison. Concentrating on the state school sector, it criticises the worldwide trend for a focus on English as the principal or only foreign language taught in primary schools, founded on a rationale that widespread proficiency in English is important for future national success in a globalised economy. It maintains that the economic rationale is not only largely unfounded and irrelevant to the language learning experiences of young children but also that the focus on English exacerbates system inequalities rather than contributing to their reduction. The book argues for a broader perspective on language learning in primary schools, one that values multilingualism and knowledge of regional and indigenous languages alongside a more diverse range of foreign languages. This book will appeal to educational policymakers, researchers and students interested in early foreign language learning in state educational systems worldwide.
