The last film of Polish director Andrzej Munk, who was killed in a
car crash during filming, this Holocaust drama was completed by
Munk's colleagues and went on to win awards at Venice Film Festival
and Cannes film festival. Liza (Aleksandra Slaska) is a German
woman returning to Europe by ship with her husband. While walking
on the deck, she sees the face of a woman she is sure she
recognises. It turns out that she knew the passenger, Marta (Anna
Ciepielewska) at Auschwitz, where the women's paths crossed during
World War II. Two possible versions are given for the events that
took place there: one heroic version, where Liza saved Marta's
life; and one shameful version where Liza, a Nazi officer,
manipulated events to gain promotion and imagined that Marta had
been executed years before.
Touching documentary based on a couple whose lives are enriched and
ultimately, irrevocably changed by a love of motorcycling. In 1970
Kim Newcombe, a young New Zealander, worked for the Konig outboard
motor company in Berlin and soon he'd converted one of their
engines into a super-fast motorbike. With his sweetheart, Janine,
they'd left New Zealand in 1969 on a grand adventure. Janine filmed
their exploits on a cine camera and here the results are pieced
together spliced with interview footage of her today, in her '50s.
Kim ended up competing in the chase after the World Championship
Road Racing title on his trusty Konig which achieved supersonic
speeds by the days' standards. The film documents the couple's
grand adventure as they followed the qualifying rounds through
central and eastern Europe, giving a behind the scenes look at the
sport before it became the massive sponsorship-funded monster it is
today. Ultimately their happiness is marred by sorrow in this
intensely personal, multi-award winning documentary.
