During the 1970s, San Francisco had a very open gay community where men and women were able to enjoy a sense of freedom denied them in most other cities in America. However, when AIDS began to spread it caused a huge increase in deaths in the city, as it did around the world. The film focuses on the impact of the disease on the people of San Francisco and how the community rallied together to support one another through the crisis.
