Embodiment and the Treatment of Eating Disorders - The Body as a Resource in Recovery (Paperback): Catherine Cook-Cottone Embodiment and the Treatment of Eating Disorders - The Body as a Resource in Recovery (Paperback)
Catherine Cook-Cottone
R801 Discovery Miles 8 010 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Embodiment refers to the attunement of the inner and outer self. Cognitions are aligned with the sensing and feeling body. Further, in an attuned experience of self, positive embodiment is maintained by a set of internally focused tools, such as self-care practices that support physiological health, emotional well-being and effective cognitive functioning. For those who suffer from eating disorders, this is not the case; in fact, the opposite is true. Disordered thinking, an unattuned sense of self and negative cognitions abound. Turning this thinking around is key to client resilience and treatment successes. Catherine Cook-Cottone provides tools for clinicians working with clients to restore their healthy selves and use their bodies as a positive resource for healing and long-term health. The book goes beyond traditional treatments to talk about mindful self-care, mindful eating, yoga and other practices designed to support self-regulation.

Teaching Evidence-Based Practice - A Special Issue of Evidence-Based Communication Assessment and Intervention (Paperback,... Teaching Evidence-Based Practice - A Special Issue of Evidence-Based Communication Assessment and Intervention (Paperback, New)
Ralf Schlosser, Jeff Sigafoos
R1,049 Discovery Miles 10 490 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Many national professional organizations of speech-language pathologists have adopted evidence-based practice (EBP) as the preferred approach to clinical practice. This mandate brings with it an added responsibility for university programs because they need to prepare future generations of speech-language pathologists for these new demands.

This special issue is the first in a peer-reviewed journal in the field that focuses on the teaching of EBP at the pre-professional level! That is, four university programs from three continents (Australia, Europe, and North America) showcase how they conceptualized and implemented their innovative approach to teaching EBP.

Because many programs are in the midst of moving toward EBP, this is a must read for anyone who is teaching or learning in a university-based program in speech-language pathology.

We believe that this issue will serve as a catalyst for increased scholarly discourse on this critical need.

Dual Diagnosis - Evaluation, Treatment, Training, and Program Development (Hardcover, 1993 ed.): Joel Solomon, Sheldon Zimberg,... Dual Diagnosis - Evaluation, Treatment, Training, and Program Development (Hardcover, 1993 ed.)
Joel Solomon, Sheldon Zimberg, Edward Shollar
R2,837 Discovery Miles 28 370 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Patients who have both a psychiatric disorder and a substance abuse problem cause most clinicians to throw up their hands in despair. The clinical problems that these "dual diagnosis" patients present are enor mously complex. Diagnostically, how is one to tell if disorders of mood and thinking, for instance, are signs of a mental illness or consequences of substance abuse? How is one to obtain important historic information when the patient may be unable or unwilling to provide it and there are no readily available collateral sources of information? In any case, why bother? Treatments for dually diagnosed patients are ineffective; patients won't stay in treatment; recidivism occurs at a very high rate. To make matters even more difficult, traditional health care reim bursement mechanisms do not provide for the multimodality clinical programs and special services needed by the patient who is both mentally ill and a substance abuser. So the clinician needs an effective bureaucratic strategy as well as a treatment strategy. For the most part, clinicians have handled the problem by ignoring it."

The Appearance of Witchcraft - Print and Visual Culture in Sixteenth-Century Europe (Paperback): Charles Zika The Appearance of Witchcraft - Print and Visual Culture in Sixteenth-Century Europe (Paperback)
Charles Zika
R1,309 Discovery Miles 13 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Shortlisted for the 2008 Katharine Briggs Award.

For centuries the witch has been a powerful figure in the European imagination; but the creation of this figure has been hidden from our view. Charles Zika s groundbreaking study investigates how the visual image of the witch was created in late fifteenth- and sixteenth-century Europe. He charts the development of the witch as a new visual subject, showing how the traditional imagery of magic and sorcery of medieval Europe was transformed into the sensationalist depictions of witches in the pamphlets and prints of the sixteenth century.

This book shows how artists and printers across the period developed key visual codes for witchcraft, such as the cauldron and the riding of animals. It demonstrates how influential these were in creating a new iconography for representing witchcraft, incorporating themes such as the power of female sexuality, male fantasy, moral reform, divine providence and punishment, the superstitions of non-Christian peoples and the cannibalism of the New World.

Lavishly illustrated and encompassing in its approach, The Appearance of Witchcraft is the first systematic study of the visual representation of witchcraft in the later fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. It will give the reader a unique insight into how the image of the witch evolved in the early modern world.

Emotion Regulation for Young People with Eating Disorders - A Guide for Professionals (Hardcover): Sophie Nesbitt, Lucia... Emotion Regulation for Young People with Eating Disorders - A Guide for Professionals (Hardcover)
Sophie Nesbitt, Lucia Giombini
R4,214 Discovery Miles 42 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Emotion Regulation for Young People with Eating Disorders is a supportive guide for professionals to help them build effective therapeutic relationships with young people struggling with eating disorders. The book focuses on the role of emotion regulation in the development and maintenance of eating disorders. The psychological concepts discussed are an integration of ideas and theories that have been proposed by many psychologists over the last half-century. The tasks presented in the book use aspects of these theories and concepts in an applied way which can be helpful to enable young people to understand more about their emotional experience and how it has contributed to their difficulties. The approach proposed can be used across the spectrum of eating disorders as the dysfunctional emotional regulation difficulty is shared by all eating disorders. The workbook will be helpful for Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) professionals such as psychiatrists, psychologists, counsellors, nurses, occupational therapists, dieticians and therapeutic care workers.

Phonology for Communication Disorders (Paperback, New): Martin J. Ball, Nicole M uller, Ben Rutter Phonology for Communication Disorders (Paperback, New)
Martin J. Ball, Nicole M uller, Ben Rutter
R1,784 Discovery Miles 17 840 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This textbook describes the approaches to phonology that are most relevant to communication disorders. It examines schools of thought in theoretical phonology, and their relevance to description, explanation and remediation in the clinical context.

A recurring theme throughout the book is the distinction between phonological theories that attempt elegant, parsimonious descriptions of phonological data, and those that attempt to provide a psycholinguistic model of speech production and perception.

This book introduces all the relevant areas of phonology to the students and practitioners of speech-language pathology and is a companion volume to the authorsa (TM) Phonetics for Communication Disorders.

When the Body Is the Target - Self-Harm, Pain, and Traumatic Attachments (Hardcover): Sharon Klayman Farber When the Body Is the Target - Self-Harm, Pain, and Traumatic Attachments (Hardcover)
Sharon Klayman Farber
R5,000 Discovery Miles 50 000 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this comprehensive and insightful work, Dr. Sharon K. Farber provides an invaluable resource for the mental health professional who is struggling to understand self-harm and its origins. Using attachment theory to explain how addictive connections to pain and suffering develop, she discusses various kinds and functions of self-harm behavior. From eating disorders to body modifications such as tattooing, Dr. Farber explores the language of self-harm, and the translation of that language and its psychic functions in the therapeutic setting. She tells us, 'When the body weeps tears of blood, we need to wonder what terrible sorrows cannot be spoken.' Brilliantly illustrated with rich clinical material, this book offers a practical approach to the diagnosis, assessment, and treatment of the increasing number of patients whose emotions are expressed through bodily harm. The challenges of working with patients who tend to view the world of relationships in terms of predator and prey are clearly explicated and the stormy countertransference responses that threaten to destroy the treatment are given a full hearing. Finally, she shows how the attachment relationship formed in treatment can repair the traumatic attachment in mind, body, psyche, and soul, and can serve as the cornerstone of therapeutic change. Janet Treasure, Ulrike Schmidt, Pam Macdonald
R1,307 Discovery Miles 13 070 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Caring for a loved one with an eating disorder is a difficult task; carers often find it hard to cope, and this can contribute to the maintenance of the disorder. The Clinician's Guide to Collaborative Caring in Eating Disorders shows how active collaboration between professional and non-professional carers can maximise the quality of life for both the sufferer and all other family members.

The book provides straightforward guidance for clinicians who work with families and carers. It suggests ways of ensuring that interpersonal elements that can maintain eating disorders are minimised and indicates skills and knowledge that can be taught to the carer for both managing their personal reaction to the illness, and for providing a practically and emotionally supportive environment that is conducive to change. The appendices of the book contain a Toolkit for Carers, a series of worksheets designed to help carers recognise their own unique caring styles.

This book is worthwhile reading for all health professionals working with people with eating disorders. It is relevant across a variety of settings and client groups including inpatients, out-patients, community and day patients.

The Body Electric - Electromagnetism and the Foundation of Life (Paperback, 1st Quill ed): Robert O. Becker, Gary Selden The Body Electric - Electromagnetism and the Foundation of Life (Paperback, 1st Quill ed)

R550 R520 Discovery Miles 5 200 Save R30 (5%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The perennial bestseller that you MUST READ in order to fully understand the interplay between electric energy and living organisms

The Body Electric tells the fascinating story of our bioelectric selves. Robert O. Becker, a pioneer in the field of regeneration and its relationship to electrical currents in living things, challenges the established mechanistic understanding of the body. He found clues to the healing process in the long-discarded theory that electricity is vital to life. But as exciting as Becker's discoveries are, pointing to the day when human limbs, spinal cords, and organs may be regenerated after they have been damaged, equally fascinating is the story of Becker's struggle to do such original work.

The Body Electric explores new pathways in our understanding of evolution, acupuncture, psychic phenomena, and healing.

Critical Feminist Approaches to Eating Dis/Orders (Paperback): Helen Malson, Maree Burns Critical Feminist Approaches to Eating Dis/Orders (Paperback)
Helen Malson, Maree Burns
R1,665 Discovery Miles 16 650 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Over the past decade there have been significant shifts both in feminist approaches to the field of eating disorders and in the ways in which gender, bodies, body weight, body management and food are understood, represented and regulated within the dominant cultural milieus of the early twenty-first century. Critical Feminist Approaches to Eating Dis/Orders addresses these developments, exploring how eating disordered subjectivities, experiences and body management practices are theorised and researched within postmodern and post-structuralist feminist frameworks. Bringing together an international range of cutting-edge, contemporary feminist research and theory on eating disorders, this book explores how anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and obesity cannot be adequately understood in terms of individual mental illness and deviation from the norm but are instead continuous with the dominant cultural ideas and values of contemporary cultures. This book will be essential reading for academic, graduate and post-graduate researchers with an interest in eating disorders and critical feminist scholarship, across a range of disciplines including psychology, sociology, cultural studies and gender studies as well as clinicians interested in exploring innovative theory and practice in this field.
