This book is designed to advance both theory and practice in the psychological preparation of high-level sports performers. The authors integrate the relevant qualitative and quantitative research literatures with practical knowledge gained via their own personal experience of working with elite athletes. Seven aspects of psychological preparation are considered: basic psychological skills; self-confidence; motivation; arousal and activation; stress and anxiety; concentration; and coping with adversity. Each discussion ends with a summary of the implications for future research and best practice. Elite performers from around the world share their techniques for mentally preparing for competition. The authors then explore the links between the practices that these athletes use and theories which underlie psychological preparation for performance. This book develops a model of psychological preparation for elite sports performers incorporating two unique features: the research-to-practice orientation which is taken to preparation for high-level sports performance; and a global perspective using evidence derived from North American, European, Australian and other research literatures in both general and sport psychology. This is the first book of its kind and should be a valuable resource for sport psychologists, students and professionals with an interest in sport or high-level performance.
Sport Cyberpsychology is the first book devoted to assessing the
influence of technology on human interaction, behaviour and mental
health in a sport context, gathering research on the use of
technology and the Internet by athletes, coaches and sport science
support staff. The book identifies the potential impact of
technology on athletes' mental preparation for competition, as well
as the role of technology in improving performance. It explores the
use of technology by athletes and sport organisations for social
interaction, while also considering the 'darker' side of athletes'
Internet use. It covers topics including: the role of GPS, gaming
and virtual reality in training and injury recovery the use of
social media by athletes and sport organisations the psychology of
self-presentation and brand management, as well as issues of online
privacy the use of technology by other elite groups, such as
military and medical personnel, and non-elite sportspeople
cyberbullying and online harassment of athletes online gambling and
athletes' mental health in relation to their online activities
virtual learning environments and the educational opportunities the
online world can offer athletes Accessibly written, with a
companion website featuring lecture slides, reading lists, video
links and suggested social media accounts, Sport Cyberpsychology
offers a complete resource for students and instructors alike. It
is important reading for any students of sport psychology, sport
coaching or sport media, as well as coaches, athletes and sport
science support staff.
"When the going gets tough, stillpower--not willpower--is the best
response." In this revolutionary yet simple paradigm for
performance, you will find the zone from within, achieve excellence
with ease, and seek clarity of mind to succeed on and off the
field.
In "Stillpower," Garret Kramer reveals the innate principles
behind consistent performance and success by highlighting the
misalignment between the experiences of athletes and the strategies
of the coaches, psychologists, and performance experts who are
trying to help them.
Using real-life examples, his simple but profound writing aims
to help athletes and non-athletes alike perform with freedom and
ease by looking within themselves for the keys to success. While
other books improve an athlete's performance with quick, external
fixes and mental tricks, "Stillpower" offers a lasting
solution--the ultimate performance tools: instinct, inner wisdom,
and insight.
"Stillpower"'s message is clear: when we stop trying to will
ourselves through a problem, the solutions become intuitively
available. With "Stillpower," success is so much closer than you
think.
