Andrew Edwards
R1,723 Discovery Miles 17 230 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Pacing in sport and exercise: a psychophysiological perspective is the first book which comprehensively examines the way humans pace exercise and sporting activities. This concept represents an exciting opportunity to combine the latest physiological and psychological theories with practical sport and exercise applications. The book will be an essential read for sport and exercise science academics, students, coaches, athletes and general exercise enthusiasts. Pacing is the strategy by which effort is managed across an exercise bout in relation to a specific goal and in the knowledge of the likely demands of the task. It is widely recognised that individuals distribute effort across a task and this is in evidence during all non-reflex exercise situations where individuals are able to receive and act upon neural feedback from peripheral physiologic systems. As such, pacing across a wide range of sport and exercise contexts is investigated and explained. Sporting activities as diverse as sprinting, soccer, triathlon, rowing and cycling are discussed. In addition, training methodologies to improve the ability to self-pace exercise are reviewed and a self-regulatory system to optimise training across all exercise types is proposed. Templates for consolidating training sessions, design and monitoring strategies are included. Pacing in relation to specific population groups such as children, overweight/obese individuals and those with chronic or acute illnesses is also discussed. Finally, it is hoped this new book will stimulate further research, growth and awareness of this important topic.

Science of Sport, Exercise & Physical Activity in the Tropics (Hardcover): Andrew Edwards, Anthony Leicht Science of Sport, Exercise & Physical Activity in the Tropics (Hardcover)
Andrew Edwards, Anthony Leicht
R4,794 R4,199 Discovery Miles 41 990 Save R595 (12%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Greek philosopher Aristotle first suggested the earth could be divided into types of climatic zones, based on their distance from the equator. The region nearest the equator was termed the Torrid Zone and was considered uninhabitable. However, almost half of the world's population now live, exercise and regularly compete in this Torrid Zone, which in modern times, we recognise as the tropics. This book is the first text to report the mechanisms, interventions, implications and practical considerations of sport, exercise and physical activity in the tropics. Tropical conditions impose a unique blend of challenges to human physical performance and these areas are thoroughly interrogated in this monograph. Pertinent commentaries of physiology, behaviour, sports and physical activity considerations in hot, humid, tropical conditions are provided. These are additionally supported by peer-reviewed cutting edge research articles to maximise performance in the tropics.

I welcome you to the 2014 accepted writings of Athletic Insight. The ordering of papers does not match with the sequence in which they were released. Rather, I chose to do something a little different in this, my final year as Editor and Chief of Athletic Insight. What the reader finds in this most recent compendium of Athletic Insight writings is nineteen papers, beginning with the most recently accepted as parts of the Autumn, 2014 edition of the journal. Afterward, I reordered the remaining accepted papers so that they made the whole of the book more coherent to the readership. Briefly, there were a significant number of papers submitted to Athletic Insight from India, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Sweden, Norway, the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Several of these papers were screened out even before they were sent out to editorial board members or guest reviewers for a thorough peer evaluation. Those that were deemed acceptable were then farmed out to scholars well versed in the various topics submitted to the journal. The topics submitted spanned coaching, motor learning and sport psychology intersections, youth sport, elite amateur sport, professional sport, cultural sport psychology, and various aspects relating to exercise psychology. This diversity in subject matter confirms what I have always known that Athletic Insight is inclusive and open to a breadth of topics, critical scholarship, and emerging and contentious issues pertinent today within the sphere of sport and exercise psychology.

"In my 30+ years in cycling I have had many opportunities to see extremely physically talented athletes fail to live up to their potential because they were never able to balance their physical talent with the mental side of sport. During that same time I have seen good athletes have championship winning performances due in part to their mental strength. Now more than ever, with so much information available to everyone instantaneously, many athletes tend to look everywhere except to themselves for improvement.
Carrie Cheadle's "On Top Of Your Game" is a fantastic resource for every level of athlete from weekend warrior to World Champion who is looking to strengthen their mental game and thus improve performance by looking within. With an easy to read format, "Take-Aways" & "Tools" at the end of each chapter and the ..".there is no right or wrong way" approach, Cheadle definitely has a winning book on her hands. Drawing on personal experience as well as the experiences of the many athletes she has worked with, a nice balance of real life and textbook examples is achieved to make easy understanding for everyone."

The Winning Point - How to Master the Mindset of Champions (Paperback): Loren Fogelman The Winning Point - How to Master the Mindset of Champions (Paperback)
Loren Fogelman
R420 Discovery Miles 4 200 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Winning mindset = winning outcomes

An Olympic hopeful faces the end of his worst season yet. For a year he's been in a slump, not hitting his numbers. His trainer suggests a meeting with Loren Fogelman. After a single session with Loren, he ends the season on a positive note, winning the event and setting a new season best record.

A golfer complains of erratic, inconsistent play. New equipment doesn't solve the problem the way he thinks it should. Following Loren's advice, he transforms nearly every aspect of his mental game-he slows down, focuses his mind and concentrates on one shot at a time. Distractions disappear. Dedicated focus lowers his handicap. He's voted the most improved player in his club.

A dressage equestrian takes a bad fall during competition. The injury shuts her down for a long time. When she finally does compete again, she holds back-self-blame and the fear of being hurt again claw at her confidence. Her horse senses her apprehension. But when Loren inspires her to create a powerful vision that aligns with her goals, she becomes a top performer in her category.

What these athletes have in common: They know their negativity is diverting their energy and hindering their performance. They succeed with Loren's insights and create the specific mindsets and visions necessary to attain their goals.

Focusing on what's do-able helps you win big

In The Winning Point, Loren Fogelman asserts that anyone can be a champion-high performance isn't the trademark of gifted athletes alone.

Today is the day to claim what's rightfully yours. You have a choice. Stop settling for less than what you want to offer the world. Focus on your vision. Boldly go

Your mindset colors everything you do, on and off the field. Mastering your thoughts and harnessing your energy for high performance is critical to success in every area of your life. Strategically tap into your highest potential and soar to the top.

Loren throws a spotlight on what most mental game strategies miss. Her strategy ensures high performance. Learn powerful-but-simple actions you can take to boost confidence, improve focus, and remain present at all times.

Loren pulls back the curtain on a little known practice that is quickly gaining momentum and transforming lives: Emotional Freedom Techniques. Learn why some exceptional athletes struggle, despite their best efforts, and how to escape the same trap. Discover how athletes, at all levels of play, quickly achieve significant performance gains.

In The Winning Point, you'll learn how to keep distractions from burning up the energy you need to perform at your best. Fierce focus is frequently the factor that separates winning from losing.

At its core, The Winning Point helps you transform breakdowns into breakthroughs so the path to success is straightforward and uncomplicated. Loren says, "Don't play to avoid losing. Stop struggling-enjoy your adventure again. Don't let your recurrent fears steal away your remarkable future. I can show you how to reach your highest potential by sharing the strategies champion athletes use. Focus on what's possible to reach the destiny you want."

Now is the time for the champion inside you to focus fully on mastering your mindset and achieving your breakthrough.

Loren Fogelman is the founder of Expert Sports Performance where she inspires athletes to step up and play a bigger game. Her trainings and videos show athletes how to master winning mindsets.
