Gandhi and Philosophy presents a breakthrough in philosophy by

Demands for forgiveness, even in the face of horrific crimes, were
common to the late twentieth century and remain critical
aspirations for persons and communities in the early twenty-first
century. Research on forgiveness and revenge has nevertheless
revealed that many people hold divergent moral and pragmatic
beliefs about forgiving, and most survivors express longstanding
skepticism about when forgiveness is appropriate and when it is

Looking to Augustine of Hippo for guidance, Jonathan D. Ryan argues
that the movement from private self-interest toward common love of
God and neighbor is fundamental to the church's formation and
identity amidst contemporary contexts of economic inequality. Ryan
demonstrates the centrality of this theme in Augustine's Sermons
and his monastic instruction (principally the Rule), illustrating
how it shapes his pastoral guidance on matters pertinent to
economic division, including use of material resources, and
attitudes toward rich and poor. By reading Augustine's Sermons
alongside his monastic instruction, this volume allows for a closer
understanding of how Augustine's vision of a common life is
reflected in his pastoral guidance to the wider congregation. The
book's concluding reflections consider what the church in our time
might learn from these aspects of Augustine's teaching regarding
the formation of a common life, as members are drawn together in
love of God and neighbour.
David Hume launched a historic revolution in epistemology when he
showed that our theories about the world have no probability
relative to what we think of as our evidence for them, hence that
the distinction between justified and unjustified theories does not
lie in their different probabilities relative to that evidence.
However, allies in his revolution appeared only in the 20th
century, in the persons of Sir Karl Popper, Nelson Goodman and W.
V. Quine. Hume's second great contribution to the field, which
remains unrecognized to this day, was to propose what is now known
as reflective equilibrium theory as the framework within which
justified and unjustified theories are rightly distinguished. The
core of this book comprises an account of these developments from
Hume to Quine, an extension of reflective equilibrium theory that
renders it a general theory of epistemic justification concerning
our beliefs about the world, and an argument that all four of these
thinkers would have endorsed that extension. In chapters on Sextus,
Descartes, Wittgenstein's On Certainty, and other aspects of Hume's
epistemology I defend new readings of those philosophers' writings
on skepticism and note significant relationships among their views
on matters bearing on the Humean revolution. Finally, in chapters
on Hilary Putnam's "Brains in a Vat" and Fred Dretske's
contextualism - the only promising version of that view - I show
that both fail to rule out the possible truth of radical skeptical
hypotheses. This is not surprising, since those hypotheses are in
fact possible. They are not, however, of any epistemological
significance, since the justification of our beliefs about the
world is a function of the extent to which bodies of beliefs to
which they belong are in reflective equilibrium, and no extant
conception of knowledge is of any epistemological interest.

This book comprehensively investigates the position of China's
working class between the 1980s and 2010s and considers the
consequences of economic reforms in historical perspective. It
argues the case that, far from the illusion during the Maoist
period that a new society had been established where the working
classes held greater political and economic autonomy, economic
reforms in the post-Mao era have led to the return of traditional
Marxist proletariats in China. The book demonstrates how the
reforms of Deng Xiaoping have led to increased economic efficiency
at the expense of economic equality through an extensive case study
of an SOE (state-owned enterprise) in Sichuan Province as well as
wider discussions of the emergence of state capitalism on both a
micro and macroeconomic level. The book also discusses workers'
protests during these periods of economic reform to reflect the
reformation of class consciousness in post-Mao China, drawing on
Marx's concept of a transition from a 'class-in-itself' to a
'class-for-itself'. It will be valuable reading for students and
scholars of Chinese economic and social history, as well as
political economy, sociology, and politics.
This book deals with a central aspect of Marx's critique of society
that is usually not examined further since it is taken as a matter
of course: its scientific claim of being true. But what concept of
truth underlies his way of reasoning which attempts to comprehend
the social and political circumstances in terms of the possibility
of their practical upheaval? In three studies focusing specifically
on the development of Marx's scientific critique of capitalist
society, his journalistic commentaries on European politics, and
his reflections on the organisation of revolutionary subjectivity,
the authors carve out the immanent relation between the
scientifically substantiated claim to truth and the revolutionary
perspective in Marx's writings. They argue that Marx does not grasp
the world 'as it is' but conceives it as an inverted state which
cannot remain what it is but generates the means by which it can
eventually be overcome. This is not something to be taken lightly:
Such a concept has theoretical, political and even violent
consequences-consequences that nevertheless derive neither from a
subjective error nor a contamination of an otherwise 'pure'
science. By analyzing Marx's concept of truth the authors also
attempt to shed light on a pivotal problematique of any modern
critique of society that raises a reasoned claim of being true.
By drawing on the opposing ideas of Carl Jung and Karl Marx, James
Driscoll's develops fresh perspectives on urgent contemporary
problems. Jung and Marx as thinkers, Driscoll contends, carry the

George Orwell, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, and Elias Canetti have
warned us, the influence of our ever-expanding bureaucracies is a
grave threat to the survival of civilized humanity. The primary
issues Driscoll addresses include the natures of justice and the
soul, individuation and freedom, and mankind's responsibilities
within the planetary ecology. Religion, ethics, economics, science,
class divisions, immigration, financial fraud, abortion, and
affirmative action are also explored in his analysis of the
powerful archetypes moving behind Jung and Marx.
In Pluralist Politics, Relational Worlds, Didier Zuniga examines
the possibility for dialogue and mutual understanding in human and
more-than-human worlds. The book responds to the need to find more
democratic ways of listening to, giving voice to, and caring for
the variety of beings that inhabit the earth. Drawing on ecology
and sustainability in democratic theory, Zuniga demonstrates the

Neuroscience has made considerable progress in figuring out how the
brain works. We know much about the molecular-genetic and
biochemical underpinnings of sensory and motor functions, and
recent neuroimaging work has opened the door to investigating the
neural underpinnings of higher-order cognitive functions, such as
memory, attention, and even free will. In these types of
investigations, researchers apply specific stimuli to induce neural
activity in the brain and look for the function in question.
However, there may be more to the brain and its neuronal states
than the changes in activity we induce by applying particular
external stimuli.
In Volume 1 of Unlocking the Brain, Georg Northoff presents his
argument for how the brain must code the relationship between its
resting state activity and stimulus-induced activity in order to
enable and predispose mental states and consciousness. By
presupposing such a basic sense of neural code, the author ventures
into different territories and fields of current neuroscience,
including a comprehensive exploration of the features of resting
state activity as distinguishable from and stimulus-induced
activity; sparse coding and predictive coding; and spatial and
temporal features of the resting state itself. This yields a unique
and novel picture of the brain, and will have a major and lasting
