This book gathers selected and expanded contributions presented at the 4th Symposium on Space Optical Instruments and Applications, which was held in Delft, the Netherlands, on October 16-18, 2017. This conference series is organized by the Sino-Holland Space Optical Instruments Laboratory, a cooperative platform between China and the Netherlands. The symposium focused on key technological problems regarding optical instruments and their applications in a space context. It covered the latest developments, experiments and results on the theory, instrumentation and applications of space optics. The book is split into five main sections: The first covers optical remote sensing system design, the second focuses on advanced optical system design, and the third addresses remote sensor calibration and measurement. Remote sensing data processing and information extraction are then presented, followed by a final section on remote sensing data applications.
The issue of aircraft air quality is attracting considerable
attention of late, as access to public air travel has expanded
exponentially. Aircrew and passengers are increasingly concerned
about operating and service decisions that could affect their
health, comfort, and safety. The editor of this volume invited a
wide range of experts to provide an in-depth treatment of virtually
all aspects of aircraft cabin air quality. The topics are covered
at a level comprehensible to all who fly as well as being of
sufficient depth to be informative to decision makers concerned
with purchase, design, operation, and servicing of passenger
aircraft.
This open access book presents established methods of structural health monitoring (SHM) and discusses their technological merit in the current aerospace environment. While the aerospace industry aims for weight reduction to improve fuel efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and to decrease maintenance time and operating costs, aircraft structures are often designed and built heavier than required in order to accommodate unpredictable failure. A way to overcome this approach is the use of SHM systems to detect the presence of defects. This book covers all major contemporary aerospace-relevant SHM methods, from the basics of each method to the various defect types that SHM is required to detect to discussion of signal processing developments alongside considerations of aerospace safety requirements. It will be of interest to professionals in industry and academic researchers alike, as well as engineering students. This book introduces the key technologies in the manufacture of double-mass line vibrating silicon micromechanical gyroscope, respectively. The design of gyrostructure, detection technology, orthogonal correction technology, the influence of temperature and the design of measurement and control system framework are introduced in detail, with illustrations for easy understanding. This thesis presents a novel ultrasonic instrument for non-invasive and in-situ characterization of journal bearing lubricant viscosity. In particular, the application to journal bearings is described by non-invasively measuring the viscosity and localized power losses throughout operation. This ultrasonic viscometer is based on the reflection of polarized shear waves from a thin resonating coating layer to increase the measurement sensitivity, in comparison to conventional ultrasonic methods. This instrument allows for a full engine oil viscoelastic characterization in-situ. The book investigates the effects of temperature, pressure and shear rate, and describes in detail the ultrasonic setup and method. Further, it demonstrates that the same technique can be applied similarly to monitor the lubrication of other engine components. As such, it offers a unique instrument that can drive the research of oil formulations to improve engine performance and fulfill the requirements of international fuel economy regulations.

Space Micropropulsion for Nanosatellites: Progress, Challenges and Future features the latest developments and progress, the challenges faced by different researchers, and insights on future micropropulsion systems. This book highlights the relationship between independent and dependent ship repairing variables of various combinations under linear and nonlinear form using actual data collected from shipyards. Independent variables refer to age, deadweight, cubic number, principal dimensions, and type of ships. Dependent variables refer to repairing time, docking time, repairing labor, docking labor, hull blasting renewal area, hull painting renewal area, pipe renewal length, structural steel renewal weight, and structural steel renewal locations. Mathematical models are developed involving appropriate variables using multiple linear regression analysis technique for different combinations of variables of ship repair. Adequacy of models is tested using statistical parameters like coefficients of multiple determination and F statistic (calculated and tabulated). Also, validation is presented to determine the deviation of model value from the observed value and their statistical parameters to justify the adequacy of the respective estimate models. The book also emphasises the importance of managing the labor force, reliable data collection and an effective management information system to manage this as well as keeping control of on-going repair contracts.
